Kumano Kodo Tips & Safety

 Important Note for Kohechi Hikers

The Kohechi route (Koyasan to Hongu) runs through the central part of the Kii Peninsula from north to south, and is some of the steepest of all the Kumano pilgrimage routes, crossing three passes at altitudes of over 1,000 meters, including Obako Peak, along the way. This is more challenging than the Nakahechi route and recommended for advanced, experienced hikers only.

To ensure the safety of our guests, we require reservations in all the villages along the Kohechi route (Koyasan, Omata, Miura-guchi, and Totsukawa Onsen). Even if guests use KUMANO TRAVEL for part of the route, we will need to confirm the itinerary and accommodation for their entire Kohechi trip.

If we are unable to confirm, for your safety, partial requests will not be accepted.

※ Please note that currently only KUMANO TRAVEL is taking online bookings for the two inns in Miura-guchi. Please double-check when reviewing suggestions from other booking resources as the suggestions may be for a different village.

Thank you for your understanding.
