Hana-no-Iwaya & Matsumoto-toge Pass

花の巌神社 松本峠 七里御浜

This tour visits Hana-no-Iwaya before climbing the Matsumoto-toge pass.

Hana-no-Iwaya is considered one of Japan’s oldest shrines.  The 45-meter high rock is an object of worship as the legendary grave of Izanami, one of the creator deities in Japanese mythology.

Matsumoto-toge pass is an easy walk through the forest and part of the World Heritage designated Kumano Kodo Iseji route. There are sections of ancient cobblestone stairs and at the summit is a Buddhist statue standing peacefully in a bamboo grove.

The Tori-toge has sections of large stone lined trails.  But the highlight of this walk is seeing the unique landscape of the Maruyama Senmaida Paddy Fields from the distance.

The Maruyama Senmaida Paddy Fields are one Japan’s 100 famous terraced rice-fields with an amazing 1,340 rice paddies set into a slope approximately 100 meters in elevation. Stunning!
