Review: Lovely last night on the trail

We enjoyed a quiet and comfortable stay at Minshuku Momofuku in March 2025. The guesthouse has a gorgeous garden, a traditional design and feel, and is very spacious. Hide, the owner/host is an incredibly kind and active older man who provided an incredibly warm welcome and send off. Hide is an amazing cook (ex-chef?) who prepared a restaurant-quality meal for us. His beautiful photography decorates the walls in the dining room and his passion for nature and beauty is infectious. The location of this guesthouse is fantastic, right near the trailhead, river, coffee shop and a small store.

Review: Minshuku Momofuku was the highlight of our visit to the Kumano-kodo

Staying with Hide-san at Minshuku Momofuku was a delightful experience. This accommodation gave me a very warm and nostalgic feeling because it reminded me strongly of an old home I used to live in many years ago with the traditional/original tatami, shoji, fusuma, tokonoma, ranma and washing/bathing facilities. The food was lovely home-style cooking and the township of Koguchi was beautifully nestled in a valley deep in the mountains. We set off on the Ogumo-torigoe section of the Nakahechi route the following morning.

Review: Outstanding meals

The host was an EXEPTIONAL character, providing outstanding meals and a very clean well run guesthouse. I so appreciated the homey atmosphere ,comfortable bed, hot bath and the most amazing thoughtful professional meals. Experiences like these made my hike most memorable. I wish I could speak Japanese to convey my appreciation but I tried with the few words I had and google translate.

This is a small guesthouse that can accommodate up to 4 people. We arrived before the checked in time, and the host let us in nevertheless. He was very friendly and spoke a little English. The meals were fantastic.
