Gyoja Minshuku Taiyo-no-Yu

Gyoja Minshuku Taiyo-no-Yu is an older 6 story wooden building built on the side of a steep slope overlooking the emerald waters of the a dam-lake in Totsukawa Onsen.   It is located between the trailhead of the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route and the Totsukawa Onsen village.  The building is mixed use, with a day service facility for the elderly on the first floor and accommodation on the upper floors.  The entrance to the accommodation is off of the main road on the 5th floor.   The rooms are Japanese style.  The non-circulating onsen baths are both indoors and outdoors.  The outdoor bath on the upper floor has an enjoyable view.  Gyoja Minshuku Taiyo-no-Yu collaborates with local hunters to share the authetic mountain culture gastronomy, with deer and wild boar featured prominently on the menu.

Ebisuso Ryokan is a hot spring Japanese style inn located in Totsukawa Onsen in Nara Prefecture.  It is a family run establishment hosting guests for over 40 years.  The verdant garden and lantern in the entrance is a landmark in the narrow streets of this mountain settlement overlooking a man-made lake.  Totsukawa Onsen is located along the Kumano Kodo Kohechi pilgrimage route between Hatenashi-toge pass and Miura-toge pass.

Totsukawa Onsen is famous for its high-quality non-circulating mineral water baths, and Ebisuso is no exception.  Soaking in the roof-top outdoor bath is a highlight for many guests.

Supper is focused on locally produced vegetables served with many duck and chicken in a “nabe” or hot pot style dish.  Breakfast also highlights locally catch fish and homemade dishes.  Delicious!

Hotel Subaru is a hot spring retreat in Totsukawa village north of the Hongu area.  It is well known for its excellent onsen baths and quiet natural surroundings.  The Kohechi Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route runs through the grounds making it a preferred stop for hikers;  to the south is the Hatenashi-toge pass to Hongu and to the north is the Miura-toge pass. For those that wish to explore nearby sites, including the mountain-top Tamaki-jinja shrine and its giant trees, Hotel Subaru is a good base.

Hotel Subaru can only accept reservations 6 months or less in advance.

Tabanakan is a family-run Ryokan inn located in the central settlement of Totsukawa Onsen.  It was the first accommodation in the area with a history of over 100 years, the currently owners being the 4th generation.  The facility has been rebuilt and modified over time but retains the atmosphere of a welcoming, well-managed, highly-respected establishment.  Meals highlight the regional culture and ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible; dishes such as mountain vegetables, river fish, wild boar, and deer reflect this culinary ethic—source local, eat local. The baths are 100% non-circulating high quality hot spring water, including one for private use open to the sky.
