Minpaku Kodo is a family home that was re-purposed into a guesthouse. This home is in a residential development around 5 minutes south of the entrance to the Daimon-zaka section of the UNESCO World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. It is a two story building with Japanese style guestrooms on the second floor and a western style guestroom with bunk bed on the first floor. Also on the first floor is a kitchen, toilet, bath and communal sitting area. There are no meals, but instant food and snacks are for sale. The owner is very interested in visitors and what they think of the area, so much that she is studying English at a local conversation school! She often offers to drive guests to nearby spots such as the closest supermarket.

Guests arriving on Saturday, Sunday and national holidays will be checked in by the owner. But guests arriving most weekdays will be required to do self-check-in.

Mitaki Sanso has the privilege of being the only accommodation on Nachisan, located just below the Kumano Nachi Taisha and Seiganto-ji Temple.

"Mitaki 美滝" means "beautiful waterfall", and "Sanso 山荘" can be translated as "mountain villa, mountain retreat, or mountain cottage", is an appropriate name for this lodging in the mountains with beautiful views of the Nachi waterfall, at 133 meters, the tallest in Japan and worshipped as a deity.

Meals feature local produce in dishes, highlighting the seafood from the nearby Pacific coast.

It is a convenient base for walkers on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route who are starting or finishing the Ogumotori-goe section.

Being located on Nachisan has lent a sort of austere feeling to this accommodation in regards to simplicity and rules, as it often hosts pilgrims to the area. Please familiarize yourself with Japanese etiquette before you arrive. Also, be sure to check in by 18:00 at the latest.

Description

Daimon-zaka Washoan Homestay is the expansive, traditional Japanese home of the lovely Ms. Tawara, situated beside terraced rice paddies lined with rocks covered in moss and lichen, the forested mountains rising above; a typical rural “Satoyama” landscape.

The first part of the name derives from its location near the base of the Daimon-zaka slope, a short but scenic section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, an ancient staircase lined with old-growth trees.

Washoan is composed of three characters which mean 和 Peace/Harmony, 笑 Laugh/Smile, 庵 Retreat.

A free pass to a nearby onsen hot spring bath is included, and meals are homecooked.

Private rental: only one group per day.

Daimon-zaka Washoan Homestay can only accept reservations 6 months or less in advance.

The Kumano Gobo Nankai Bus sightseeing bus is a convenient way to visit the main sites of Kumano.

There are two routes available. One makes a circuit of the three Kumano Sanzan shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and the Kumano Nachi Taisha.

The other is a shorter route that focuses on Nachisan: Kumano Nachi Taisha, the Daimon-zaka section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, and Nachi falls.
