Recommended
After a eight-hour walking in the rain, Hiyodori provided a warm, friendly and homey place for rest. Six of us from different countries were chatting in the living room while the hosts were busy preparing dinner in the kitchen. Nice stay after long hike
The accommodation is walkable (used Google maps) and was along the trail we hiked on Kumano Kodo. The location is actually pretty good in that you can either continue your hike on foot or walk (20-30 min walk) to the bus stop to take you to your next Kumano Kodo destination. It's a nice place - small but cozy and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were delicious, and host was extremely nice and accommodating. We had questions about transportations, and she personally called taxi companies and inquired for us. We really enjoyed our stay at Guest House Hiyodori and would recommend.

The Most Hospitable Family
We were guests of young, extremely polite hosts together with a young family from Singapore with their small, very small, one or two year old child. The hostess had taken care of every detail of the dinner and the breakfast. In the morning the host drove me to the bus stop and saved me time. It was expected to rain after lunch. And it did rain. But in this way I remembered the Kumano Kodo and the double pilgrim ritual. Thank you, dear family.

Clean, friendly, spacious house
Previously Hitotoki, now renamed as Hiyodori, the new owners running the place since the start of 2025 have been doing an excellent job.
Friendly, very approachable, very willing to answer any questions, very keen to learn more about their guests despite the language barrier.
Entire apartment felt very clean and well maintained. Rooms were spacious, meals were delicious. There was a water dispenser which was a rather neat piece of equipment too.
Fully recommend Hiyodori.

Great and nice location akong Nakahechi
Great location along the nakahechi route when doing the Takijiri to Hongu section in 2 days. Early check-in was no problem and welcome was warm. The hosts knew some english and were used a mixture of japanese and a portable translator for communication.
Food was great too, traditionak japanese set meal for dinner. Great place!

As it was raining we appreciated being able to enter before 3pm. Our host, Hideo, was SOOOO welcoming. On our 2nd day he very kindly took us around the local village festival - what an experience. watching him try to cook octopus balls was so much fun.

Great host. The husband even brought us to the starting point for the next day himself. Very lovely people! The only comment I could make would be about the shared bathroom. Because we had to share the bath with everyone that stayed, I think no one felt relaxed enough to take a bath, only to take a quick shower.

The hosts - a lovely couple - were super nice, sweet and welcoming! The location is perfect, it’s just in your way. The room was very tidy and clean. We had an amazing stay with Saito san. We would get there on time, and he picked up up at the bus stop. The language barrier wasn't a problem at all. Our room was ready for us, and we had an amazing traditional meal. He allowed usbto wash our clothes and helped us drying our trainers.

Hideo and Kumiko run a 2 room home stay. The bed was very comfortable and the aircon was much appreciated! We had our own toilet. Dinner, breakfast and packed lunch (onigiri) was delicious. Kumiko is a great cook.

Hitotoki felt like a “bed and breakfast” type establishment that you would encounter in the US. Mr. and Mrs. Saito were extremely gracious and accommodating hosts. After hiking 7 miles in the humidity and rain, they offered to wash our clothes, for which we were extremely appreciative. The home-cooked meals were filling and delicious. Knowing that we had a 14-mile hike the next day, they offered to provide breakfast very early at 6:30 am, for which we were also appreciative. We heard Mrs. Saito stirring in the kitchen starting around 4:30 am, and we wished we knew more Japanese to properly thank her.

The hosts Mr. and Mrs. Sato San gave excellent hospitality to us. We have stayed there for one night on our first day of our three days hiking plan of the Kumano Kudo. The house located right on the route of the kudo, easy to find and access to. It is a traditionally built of Japanese house with air- conditioner, washing machine and clothes dryer equipped.
The room is spacious, clean and tidy. We had traditional Japanese full course food for dinner with a slice of delicious melon as desert and for breakfast we had toast, fired eggs and salmon. The hosts are very kind and try to communicate with us in English.

Great and kind service from the owner of the minshuku
While we arrived at the hotel, it was raining cats and dogs. We were all got wet completely. Mr. Saito san and his wife helped us dry our shoes and washed the clothes. The food they offered is delicious. Mr. Saito san also drived us to the bus stop in next morning. We appreciated very much their service during our staying. We had good experiences of Japanese tranditional lifestyle.

Lovely friendly couple who are so welcoming into their home. Food is AMAZING. We had such a great dinner and huge breakfast. The lunchbox was such a treat - all home made as well. The trail goes past their front door so you cannot miss their place.

Lovely hosts at Hitotoki
We had a fantastic stay with Hideo and Kumiko and at Hitotoki, right on the Kumano Kodo trail.
When we arrived mid afternoon we were offered hot showers then a welcome tea while our clothes were washed, ready for the next day of hiking. We had a lovely evening meal with 2 other guests and enjoyed some conversation with our hosts with our limited Japanese and the aid of so Google translate. We decided to shorten the long day of walking ahead to increase our time in Kawaya Onsen and Hideo kindly offered to drive us to the bus stop in the morning after our delicious breakfast. We highly recommend Hitotoki as a place to stay whilst in Nonaka.

You can't beat Hitotoki for convenience on the trail. It is literally in front of one of the trail markers. It is a small inn run by the Saito couple. We were the only guests there and had exclusive use of the "shared toilet". They were also kind enough to wash and dry our clothes. The food was very tasty, and we enjoyed conversing with our host using our translator apps. The hospitality of Mr. Saito is top notch! He even drove us to a shrine and to the trailhead in case we missed the bus. Very nice stay at Hitotoki!

Right on the Kumano Kodo, Hitotoki is a wonderful place to rest after a full day trek. The owners are a delightful couple, they were very kind and Mr. Saito (I hope I have his name right) was so nice to take us to the bus station by car. Meals were delicious and prepared with local products. It was a wonderful experience.

Homely and heart-warming place with an exceptional host
The place is homely and welcoming, and the owner (though not well versed in english) creates a lively and fun atmosphere with his jokes and laughter. He encouraged guests to talk and interact with one another. We enjoyed the Japanese meals, with the many side dishes. We were very full and satisfied. The owner is helpful as he drove us to the bus stop to meet the guide.

Ran by an old Japanese couple. True Japanese hospitality, out to please the guest. Everything was well thought of. The dinner and breakfast was wonderful. Best homestay in every sense I could think of. Not too be missed.

Welcoming and entertaining hosts
Hitotoki in Nonaka was fabulous. The dinner was plentiful and delicious. Our hosts, Hideo and Kamiko, were very welcoming and entertained us all evening. We really enjoyed our stay here.

A wonderful place to stay!
My friend and I had a great time staying here. Even when we accidentally arrived more than two hours early they were very accommodating. We watched baseball (rooting for the Dodgers of course), ate amazing food, and slept well.

Amazing
Easily our best stay in Japan. We arrived early cold and wet and were immediately put in a warm room with a hot drink. The couple running the place are so nice and everything is about your comfort. The food was delicious and huge portions. This really was a highlight of our walk.

A Super Nice Place to Stay

熊野古道歩き旅で利用しました。
古道沿いに立地しており迷うことは、ありませんでした。
宿のご夫婦も大変ご親切で、親戚の家に宿泊しているようで とても気持ちよく宿泊出来ました。

Delightful and heartwarming stay
The couple running this stop were very accommodating and make you feel very welcome. They know some English and have a translator device to help communicate with you. Food was excellent and in good supply. Bath and bed aren't lavish but enough to keep you warm and relaxed anyway.

Warm couple, felt like a home stay, excellent meals.
The best experience we had staying in lodging along the trail. The couple received us with open arms and interacted with all the guests, so we got to know them and they got to know us. It felt like a real cultural exchange. The food was excellent: dinner & breakfast. Everything was home-cooked. They even agreed to offer us breakfast at 6am so we could get an early jump on our hike the next morning. Absolutely wonderful stay. After dinner, we all socialized. This is not just a business. The couple enjoy hosting.

Our Second Night stop on the Kumano - Team Ellis
Our Hosts were amazing and so welcoming. A very homely experience. The perfect location as it is set a mile at the top of a hill using a little road on the Kumano from the village Chikatsuyu. This just means you don't have to do it at the start of the next days trek. Accommodation was clean and tidy and more than adequate. The food was brilliant, including the lunch box! Everything Japanese, a true experience Hideo even wrote our names in Japanese, which was a nice touch. Good Wifi! 100% recommend!!!! Accommodation is on the Kumano

Great first stop of the kumano
We stayed at Hitotoki after the first day of walking the kumano. Which was a great location, just on top of the hill. Perfect to relax. The dinner, breakfast and bento box for lunch were great. The host was so welcoming even though he didnt spoke much english. It was overall amazing!

Amazing Hitotoki!
This was the BEST place i stayed on my trek and the hosts were wonderfully welcoming and charming! I slept so well in the very comfortable beds. The meals (supper. breakfast and packed lunch) were delicious and prepared with care and thoughtfulness. I felt very comfortable in their home and they were celery enthusiastic about being hosts. I highly recommend this lovely place to stay !

The people running this accommodation facility deserve a special mention for their friendliness, kindness and quality of service. They are doing everything possible and more in order to make their guests feel at ease. This is all the more remarkable that they do not seem to have had any experience of this type of business until very recently. This requires a lot of courage and curiosity that need to be acknowledge and rewarded.

ひととき民宿さん
接客・ごはん共にとてもよかったです。ご夫婦で営まれている民宿で田舎の祖父母の家って感じでした。
外国人のお客さんがほとんどだそうで、夕食時には皆で携帯翻訳片手にわいわいと楽しい時間をすごせました。
また、朝も早い出発にもご対応いただき朝食・お弁当もきちんとご用意くださいました。

今年の4月からご夫婦で始めた民宿でした。
おもてなしの気持ちがたっぷりな温かいご夫婦で歩いた疲れが癒やされます。
夕食、朝食ともに歩く人にはしっかり食べてもらいたいからと盛りだくさんで夜はポークソテーに天ぷら、小鉢が6個もあった上、お母さんの味付けもよくおいしくいただきました。

Perfect stop on kumano's trail
Hitotoki is perfectly located to cut the kumano trail between Takijiri and Hongu-Taisha, in a very peaceful street. The house is simple but offers everything you need for a good rest (including beds and private toilet). Everything was super clean. But the best part is definitely the warm welcome from Kumiko, Hideo and their friend Matsumi. We had a lot of fun conversing with them (mostly through a digital translator!) and the dinner was delightful. Thank you for a lovely stay!

初老のご夫婦とお手伝いさんの3人が接待してくれた。お三方ともとてもお優しい方で、こういった民宿のオーナーとしては適していると思いました。奥様のご実家を旦那様が退職後自ら改築してとてもよい雰囲気の宿に生まれ変わっており、特に海外の方は、日本家屋と欧米の方に合わせたベッド、掘り炬燵は魅力的に思えます。アルコール飲料含めて飲み物は無料で、洗濯と乾燥も無料で嬉しかった。料理は、期待以上に豪華で１つ１つ手作りで美味しかったので大満足です。熊野古道で同じ場所にはいかないですが、近所にあったら何度か足を運びたいと思わせる民宿でした。お世話になりました。

The experience was truly magical. The hosts were nice and welcomed us with open arms. The walk going there was very rough so getting a good meal to end and to strat the next day was truly worth the money. The main host (Hideo Saita) was super funny and very found of talking and communicating with us. A wonderful experience, defienetly recommend it.

The best place I've been in Japan. Enjoying with Saito Family was so special that It was the best experience in my trip.
They were very nice with us and let us feel like special guests.

Saito San and his wife were so helpful and warmhearted! The food was excellent and so much. And in the morning Saito San took us with his car to the place where we wanted to go by bus. So we had no hurry and saved time. A wonderful place to stay!

Hideo and Kumiko were incredibly welcoming hosts and even let us check in early after we finished our second stage of the Kumano Kodo earlier than expected. The meals were delicious and the beds were very comfortable, just what we needed after a hard days hiking through the mountains. Would definitely recommend to anyone doing the Kumano Kodo.

A home-like place
Hideo-san and Kumiko-san are the most wonderful hosts I've ever met.
We stayed at Hitotoki for 2 nights because of typhoon No. 7. We were at first a bit worried about the uncertainty of weather and delayed hiking schedule. But Hideo-san and Kumiko-san did everything to make us feel comfortable and reassurred. We are so taken care of during our stay and really appreciated their help.
The room was homey and quiet through the heavy rain and wind that lasted the second day. Washing machine and even shoe dryer are provided. Hideo-san showed us his current work to further refurbish the waiting room, and also his plan to renovate an old house in Chikatsuyu.
The food was amazingly good. Every meal is so thoughtfully prepared, with a variety of home-made pickles and side dishes, and shimps and vegetable tempura, pork chops, beef sukiyaki or grilled salmon as main dishes. Rice was beautifully cooked al dente. We were so pampered by Kumiko-san's cooking.
Will definitely visit again next time we plan a hike in Kumano Kodo

Very nice stay!
Mr and Mrs Seito were very welcoming and took really good care of us. Even though they are not so comfortable with english, they made lots of efforts for discussing and sharing about Japan, food, culture and sports. We had a great time with them. The cooking was really good and generous and the room comfortable.

Awesome hosts & home stay
Our first night at Hitotoki was awesome! The lovely couple were great hosts, had a lovely house, cooked us a great meal and made us really feel welcome. We enjoyed trying to converse with us not knowing much Japanese and them not much English. It was a very memorable experience.

Hitotoki Review
We loved our time at Hitotoki! The accommodation was great and the food was phenomenal (arguably the best we've had in Japan). We couldn't have asked for better hosts, they were so happy and nice! We laughed a lot with them and we look forward to hopefully staying with them again in the future!

Loved it!
We had the most wonderful stay here. The food was exceptional (a feast!) and our hosts were incredibly kind, welcoming and generous. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to stay here.

Familiar and close to the path
Very nice couple who invites hikers at their house like friends. It was really familiar, the owner helped us drying our boots (shoe dryer) and clothes, they cooked a perfekt (and big!) meal (lunch and breakfast) and made us feel like being a part of their family. So nice, thanks for all!

熊野古道の道沿いにあり、滝尻から普通に歩いて７時間半ほどの、熊野本宮大社までのほぼ中間地点にあり、非常に良い場所にあります。
古民家を改装されていて、中は非常にきれいで快適な宿です。２ベッドの部屋を１人で泊まらせていただき、広くてゆっくりと寝ることができました。
おじいさんとおばあさんのおふたりで切り盛りされていて、建物はおばあさんの生まれ育った家だそうで、子供の頃の昔話は非常に興味深くおもしろいお話でした。
日本語が話せない外国の方にカタコトの英語でなんとかコミュニケーションを図ろうとされていて、非常に好感が持てました。
雨の中を歩いて到着したら、すぐにお風呂を入れていただき、風呂上がりのビールが非常に旨かったです。
ありがとうございました。
一つだけ要望をお伝えさせていただくと、お弁当のおにぎりが多すぎて食べきれませんでした。てきましたら、パンとジュースのランチパックにして、軽量で持ち運びしやすく、途中で食べやすいものにしていただけると良いと思います。

Just perfect
Mr and Mrs Saito were extremely helpful. it really shows how a language barrier is not enough and communication can still happen. Food was great and the location of the house is perfect for those looking to stop along the trail.

Amazing people and an excellent stay
I couldn't say enough good things about the couple who run this establishment. We really enjoyed meeting them and their hospitality was fantastic. I believe we were their very first guests at this home. Our stay here was due to a last-minute change and it worked out great. The food was excellent and plentiful. The beds were very comfortable. We couldn't ask for anything more and wish these folks the best of luck. Truly excellent hosts.
