Kamenoi Hotel
This was the most expensive accommodation for one night that we had in our entire Japan holiday. I found this hotel to be very underwhelming and not good value for money. However, the room was very spacious and clean and the location was good.

Avoid if possible
One of the worth places we ever stayed. On the website they said the hotel is renovated but it was not.. at least our room was not! Outdated, old and wornout everything! And to make it complete, dirty, dust and stains. Just... no! I cannot imagine how a place like this is called renovated and a 4 star hotel. A very disappointing experience, we felt cheated.

Its the Ojisan who sealed the deal
The food here is on another level.
I initially struggled to choose a hotel in Kii Katsuura because there were many options but I am glad I chose Kamenoi.
It is a 9-10 minute walk from the station, and was thankful for the luggage service so I didn't need to carry my bag.
The hotel is large but still peaceful. They offer free drinks at certain hours and free food at night though I didnt get to try it due to my digestion issues. I booked a room with a private outdoor onsen which is amazing except of course when I tried to bathe at 0600hrs. I still didnt have the courage to try the public bath though they were kind enough to provide me a tattoo cover sticker just in case.
Meals were delicious, abundant even, and full of fresh seafood. Dining while overlooking the coastal town was lovely. They also have a built in arcade which was a fun surprise.
But the best part of Kamenoi were not the above but the ojisan, i regret not getting the name, at the restaurant front desk on both days I was there. He was incredibly warm, accommodating, and always smiling. Staying there for 2 days, he remembered me and made me feel so welcomed. Before anyone would say that its their job, not everyone can make you feel welcomed in a foreign country. He is very precious. Truly the heart of Kamenoi Hotel.

Beatiful Location
Our family of three including our 16 month old daughter loved our stay at Kamenoi Hotel. The views from our hotel room were incredible. The private onsen in the room was a special treat. We watched the sunrise in the bath in the morning. The food was incredible and the service was even better. Everyone was so welcoming and kind. It was a beautiful place to stay and experience Katsuura.

Amazing end of the trip!
Our traditional room with private onsen on the balcony was the best possible end of the trip. (We stayed an extra day in another room that we booked ourselves). The central onsen was fantastic, so was the views, the tuna, the dinner and breakfast. Together with great personnel it is one of the best stays we have had (not least after a long treck)

Wonderful meals
Room is spacious and facing the sea, just that some part of the room is a bit age. but it won affect our stay.
Meal wise, is superb, we have a very good dinner with the melt in your mouth beef.
Dining area staff are friendly and helpful, however front desk staff, some of them may need to improve their english, a bit difficult to communicate
Onwen is good, we like the outdoor onwen, water is hot enough
overall, we are happy with our stay, value for money.

Very nice staff, hotel a bit tired
I feel bad about reviewing this place poorly because the staff were lovely and a lot of things about our stay here were really nice. We booked a room with a private onsen and sea view. The onsen element of the room was amazing, and the view was fantastic. The room itself was a bit tired tbh, there were some stains on the walls and a couple of tatami, and one of the screens was damaged. When you're paying like £500 a night for the room, I expected it to be a bit cleaner & tidier to be honest. I slept terribly also. The onsen made up for it big time though.
The food was pretty good and the staff made a big effort to look after me (I have some allergies, including sesame which is obviously a bit of a dangerous one in Japan). I am very grateful to them for taking care of us in this way and giving us an opportunity to eat such a variety of Japanese food safely.
It feels like a place that was amazing maybe 10 years ago or something, and the kind of austere classical music playing all of the time didn't help the vibe. I don't regret staying here though, we still had a great time.

Fine
A little disappointed by the room as I booked a western room. But in fact a western room is 2 beds + 2 Japanese style beds... Maybe it was written when I booked; don't remember. Fortunately it went fine
The bathroom, although it was clean, need to be renewed. You can see that the hotel is quite old (or seems to be)

Worn-out room
Worn-out room with peeling wallpaper, dusty decoration and a boiling hot onsen that was unusable. The whole wing to our room would have needed a renovation years ago and looked more like a creepy hospital. The restaurant on the other hand was lovely & the food excellent. Nevertheless, we would not stay here again & would not recommend it overall.

I had my own private onsen, which was very good (except from the very noisy Chinese guests next door who behaved more like in a fun resort than in an onsen). The room was very nice, the view over the sea excellent. Dinner was also excellent and elegant with very friendly staff serving the courses. Of course it was expensive but I really enjoyed it (apart from my noisy neighbors, of course).

Best Way to End your Kumano Pilgrimage
Kamenoi hotel had the best view of the accomodations we stayed at - there is a beautiful view of the bay and inland sandy beach where you can catch the sunset. The food here is also superb. Onsen is available at this location, but we decided to sleep early. There is also a family mart down the street if you need any last minute snacks, and the location is very close to the train station and bus routes. The only criticism I would have of this accommodation would be the black mold in the bathroom & covering the shower curtain.

Onsen hotel with superb meal
The decor in some parts of the hotel is a little dated but the Onsen facilities make up for that. Large public Onsen with outdoor bath and we also had a small private Onsen with our room. Stunning view over the bay. Amazing dinner and breakfast. There are lots of extras like free tea and coffee, noodle bar and games room. About a ten minute walk from the train and bus station. We enjoyed our stay very much.

A Nice Way To End The Hike

Last night
We splurged and got the room with the outside onsen and ocean view. It was nice to have the private onsen because I was not allowed in the main one due to tattoos. The room was nothing special but the onsen was great. You could adjust the heat to fit you needs. I only give it a 4 star for location due to there where a couple of trucks that drove by outside our patio. We were not using the patio at the time but if we would have been out taking a shower they probably could see us. For sure could not see down into the onsen. Dinner and breakfast were great and great presentation and so delicious. Not sure I would splurge for this room if again but did enjoy it while we where there.

Good place to stay when visiting Nachisan
Conveniently located in Kii Katsura, only a ten minute walk from the station. The kaiseki dinner was good, but we skipped the Japanese breakfast in the morning. We stayed in room with an outdoor onsen bath, which was fantastic. The only drawback was that there was no indoor shower, and the outdoor shower was a bit chilly in the evening. Even though there were recent renovations, the hotel is still showing signs of its age.

What a way to end our hike!
This place was pricier than we would usually pay but really worth the money. We had the most beautiful room with incredible sea views. We had our own bathroom in addition to the fantastic public onsen within the hotel (also overlooking the sea). The food felt really premium (great veggie options) and the staff were brilliant. There are plenty of facilities within the hotel, including a place to get free drinks throughout the day, and night time noodles included in the price! We loved our stay, it felt really special.

This hotel is old and not loved by the management. This is a shame as the onsen is good and the rooms with seaview have great views. The restaurant is outstanding. The chef takes great pride in what they make. It is a shame that the rest of the management do not take the same pride in the place.

Great refurbished hotel
We stayed here on our last night and the onsen and food were amazing. There was a strange smell in the room we were supplied, and after informing the staff they moved us to another room, which didn't have a smell and was gorgeous. We were very grateful for this kind hospitality. We loved the entertainment area and the dinner and breakfast were delicious. We also were able to explore the Katsuura area which was fun.
The room had the best view of our experience, looking out onto Katsuura Bay with Nachi in the distance.

Amazing food and great location right on the bay.
Kasuura Gyoen is an older hotel that maintains its beauty and amenities.
Our room was a very nice Japanese style room and included a private always-on onsen, right on the bay, so it felt very luxurious. It was a great treat after completing the Nakahechi.
The dinner and breakfast were among the best we had on our trip. The staff were super friendly and helpful.

Great baths!
We really enjoyed the large bathing area, especially the outdoor area with its nice garden and view. The dinner in our room was excellent although I did feel like a glutton ... there was so much food! The woman serving our dinner was great. The breakfast buffet was very good. I wished I was more hungry for the breakfast, but I still felt full from the big meal the night before! I booked this hotel as a special treat even though it was higher in price than I normally would pay. In hindsight, I probably would skip this next time around. For example, I preferred the value of the simpler minshuku we stayed at in Kawayu Onsen.

Excellent stay
Our Japanese larger room with private onsen was amazing. We loved every second of staying here. The staff were lovely and looked after us well.

A rude receptionist who made us feel unwelcome and refused to give us a second towel even though the 2 (very small) towels we had been given were wet from the Onsen and she had a stock of dry towels behind the desk.

Wow! An unbelievable meal
This Ryokan was located 10 minutes from the train station...so its a walk to both the bus and the train. Truth is that its a bit old and in need of a refresh, but the rooms were very clean and it had the best Onsen with extraordinary views. We were one of the few Western couples staying there, they did not speak very much English so it was a bit challenging. They made us feel really welcomed with a tea ceremony upon arrival and helped us with Kimonos. They even doubled up our mattresses without our asking. The real reason to stay here is the dinner. It was a truly exceptional experience, one that we will never forget. A massive feast was brought to our room, with an endless spread of exquisitely presented food. While it may not have been the single best bite of food we had on our trip, it was a meal that we will never forget. Highly recommend.

Fantastic Dinner
Room, view and bath really great. The dinner was maybe the best I ever had. If you walked the Kumano Kodo, try the Kumano Kodo Sanzan sake! Really tasty and great way to celebrate the walk. Breakfast was a huge buffet, but full of tour groups so a total scrum.

One night at Katsuura Gyoen
The facilities are beautiful, if a little dated. My Japanese style room was extremely beautiful, but I didn't realize that it would be a smoking room and it smelt terrible and I wasn't able to change it, which was disappointing! I don't know how I could have indicated my preference about this during booking or if it was my mistake but it certainly would have been a better experience in a non-smoking room. However, the view was amazing! The food was good although the dining room feels a lot like a cafeteria. The baths were lovely although 1/3 was under renovation.

Nice Onsen resort with beautiful rooms overlooking the ocean
This resort seemed a bit older, however it has very nice rooms, with lots of space and a beautiful view over the ocean. Food was served in our room which was a very special experience. The multi-course menus were very nice and creative and some dishes were extremely tasty. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

high end hot bath resort
This hotel is located 10-15 minutes' walk away from train station. This is a very nice hot bath hotel. We enjoyed the private hot bath in our hotel room. Dinner is served in a private room, a 14 dishes course. Everything is nicely prepared.

Beautiful!
I booked this place at the very last minute as a place to stay at the end of two days of hiking on the Kumano Kodo trail. The hotel was quite large and very well run. It seems that a lot of Japanese visit this hotel. The room had a beautiful view, the meal was extravagant and the baths were very large and well maintained.

Great experience especially the first night; LOVE the private bath and seaview room.
The first night we stayed in a beautiful room with a private dinner service which was the BEST vegetarian meal I had while in Japan. We LOVED our private bath as well. We liked our first night so much we booked an additional night but had to change rooms which was fine but we didn't get the private meal so we had to eat at the buffet. As a vegetarian there wasn't much for me to eat. My choices were white rice, a limited amount of vegetables for salad, fried vegetable tempura, fried onion rings, and desserts. If you eat tuna, there is an unlimited supply of the freshest fish you could ask for. I was sad to see whale and shark fin soup on the buffet. This area of Japan (the Kii Peninsula) unfortunately still participates in whaling and in mass killings of dolphins (Taijai) plus capturing whales and dolphins for the entertainment industry. After 1 day, I felt uneasy and sad being so close to Taijai's bloody cove.

A relaxing spa that's could use some updating
I really enjoyed Gyoen. It's a relaxing atmosphere. The staff is friendly and tries so hard to make you feel comfortable - even with a bit of a language barrier. Their kindness spoke to me loud and clear. The whole town of Katsuura is outdated. Mostly older folks roam the quiet streets. It was interesting to see the sights and meet the people. Wouldn't recommend staying for more than one night.

Personal Service and a beautiful location
Nothing is too difficult for the hotel staff and they are extremely attentive. Outdoor private baths are spectacular as is the view of the bay from them. Rooms are spaceous and impeccibly clean. Best kaiseki meal we have expereinced in Japan over 5 trips and 5 years.

We booked a "Yunagi-tei" room which was very spacious and nice. The dinners were delicious and served in the room by a pleasant waitress in kimono. Nice onsen bath with both indoor and outdoor bath. All service at the hotel was very attentive. Oddly, however, the breakfast buffet was subpar.
