Super Shukubo in Koyasan
One of the best room we had, definitely the best dinner of our whole trip to Japan, and to be sure a good experience. All in all a bit too expensive though, especially given the fact that you also have other guests not here for Kumano Kodo. But it is definitely a five-star hotel and therefore a bit of a luxury accomodation.

Fabulous Fudo-in
Ths was an unforgettable 2 days in our Japan travel. The accomodation, the food and the staff at Fudo-in were exceptional. The location was ideal for the cemetry tour and another walk that we were booked onto. This was a highlight in our 30 day Japan trip.

Lovely peaceful stay in a beautiful location
We loved our stay here. It was very clean and comfortable and the monks were courteous and welcoming. The food was excellent and we would highly recommend a stay in Koyasan.

Exceptional food
Stayed here in August, having stayed here once before 2 years ago.
The hosts didn't speak much english, which is totally fine.
Beautiful location in the mountains, slightly cooler than Tokyo and Kyoto which was a welcome relief.
Fantastic location with a view of the forest from the room itself.
The dinner was probably the best food I had the whole week - very intricately prepared, a multitude of small dishes, all delicious.

Pleasant stay at Fudoin
We really enjoyed our stay at Fudoin. The monks there were very helpful and courteous. The shojin ryori meals that they had prepared for us were well-prepared and delicious. Our room was very cozy and comfortable and the staff were extremely efficient in preparing our rooms to sleep for the night. The bath at the temple was enjoyable though it was not outdoors and quite small, accommodating only three people. Overall, it was a very memorable stay.

Stay with family at Fudo-in
My family and I recently stayed at Fudo-in. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The sounds of nature was calming and exhilarating. The completely vegan food was enjoyed by us. The room with tatami mats and futons was quaint and comfortable .

family stay at Fudo-in
Gorgeous roomswith pretty garden views, fabulous bathroom which our family had exclusive use of for one hour, and the evening meal was simply stunning - so beautifully presented and delicious! No-one left hungry. The location is great - easy to walk to all major sights. Morning prayer session worthwhile too.

An extraordinary experience
We stayed for two nights in Fudo-in temple during the beautifully foliaged autumn season. Our room faces a small garden composed of a pond, a maple tree and several garden greens. We can hear the morning pryers from the room, through our room is among the furthest away from the main hall. The temple ground is well hidden away from the main street and is a comparatively small. This lends it a special charm of quietness and solidary. During the day time, the temple may have occasionally day-visitors who come to view the temple ground and the main praying hall. But all have come with respect and good manners.
What has made our stay especially unforgettable is their staff who have taken care of us with great sincerity that is rare to get in normal ryokans. We were treated not only as guests that stay with them overnight, but also as indsividuals like themselves who are interested in Buddhism and its teachings.
We felt instantly at home when we arrived, and wished we could stay much longer when we left.
It is a truely spiritual corner of Koyasan.

Felt like a fabulous luxury stay, but missed the temple feeling.
Felt like a fabulous luxury stay, with an excellent traditional vegetarian meal. But apart from the ceremony we could join in the morning, it didn't really feel like we were in a temple.

Fudo-in, a small service oriented Buddhist monastery
We were very pleased with our visit to Fudo-in in Koyasan. This monastery really cares about its visitors, which is a good thing, and based on my research, somewhat unusual. The ensuite toilet is unusual for monastery accommodations, and very convenient. The foreign visitors were offered dinner in the very beautiful main dining room equipped with tables and chairs, while the Japanese visitors ate in private rooms with beautiful views, where they sat on the floor. The food was all good and well prepared, but, as one would expect, not brilliant. The highlight of the visit was the morning prayer service at 6:00 which was conducted for the visitors with bench seating. We were all invited to participate in the service, and the prayer leader delivered a talk in Japanese and English specifically relevant to visitors to Koyasan.

Fudo-in Temple Stay
When it comes to Shukubo temple stays DO NOT sell yourself short! Spend more and you will get a better experience and Fudo-in delivers this. The temple isn't far from Rengedani bus stop and as soon as you arrive they welcome you with much joy. The rooms are simple, yet elegant (don't forget to take off your slippers/will ruin the tatami mats). When you are brought to your private dinner room the view of the garden leaves you in awe. Being a vegetarian, I couldn't ask for a better meal (bring your camera to take a picture of the food). When you head back to your room the futon is perfectly made for you and surprisingly it's just as comfortable as a mattress. The morning prayers you don't want to miss! The history will be explained to you in English afterwards and a wonderful breakfast will top off your stay. I wasn't able to hit the hot bath, but it probably is a five star too. I WILL be back Fudo-in :)

Nice stay
It has been a nice stay. I found it a bit expensive. Sleeping at the temple was a great experience, also attending the morning prays. The vegetarian meals where surprisingly tasty and beautifully presented.

Excellent stay at the Fudoin Temple in Koyasan
We stayed at the Fudoin temple in the Hanare room which was amazing. It was very large and comfortable with excellent heating as it was snowing in January 2014 when we were there which was just lovely. We were met by one of the monks who showed us to the room and explained how everything would work and what times he would pick us up for dinner, the Buddhist ceremony the following morning and then for breakfast. We felt very well cared for and had a very relaxing time. As our son is vegetarian this was an especially interesting experience for him. The food was very tasty and more than enough to fill us up. The service the following morning was very peaceful and reflective. The Head Monk explained about the region and its history. We felt very privileged to be allowed to stay at the Temple. In terms of travelling there it was not difficult at all. We used the World Heritage Pass which made things easy to get around incorporating the train trip, cable car and bus trips. We were very pleased that we went there in winter time as the snow made everything just that bit more beautiful and peaceful.

Fudo-in
A highlight of Japan. Mt Koya is a deeply spiritual place and Fudo-in is a beautiful temple inn located in the heart of Koyasan. The shojin-ryori with a view of the picturesque temple gardens and the nearby Dagan and Okunoin are all special things to take away from the trip. The morning service is a short (about 40 minutes) and not too early in the morning (app 0700). It would have been nice to have more time in the temple itself but I think a night here gives a very good feel of the monk lifestyle with enough time to see the main attractions of Koyasan.

Luxury Buddhist Temple
This is a five star ryokan maintained by the monks of the Buddhist Temple. It's new, spotless, with beautiful furnishings. Really luxury like a five star hotel. The food is strictly vegetarian but varied and tasty. The morning pray is a mystic experience. Koya-san is not only a very sacred and spiritual but also amazingly lovely place.

We missed "heart".
The reception was very functional, a bit cold even. Very professional service, friendly and correct people, but we missed "heart". Probably because "the management", I don't mean literally, but as an atmosphere, was never far away.

Pure magic
I stayed at Fudoi-in for 4 nights by myself, and had the most wonderful experience. The monks are kind, and helpful, and go beyond the call of duty. They interact and assist from their hearts and you can feel the love.
The meals are exquisite, delicious, and beautifully served. The dining hall is a presence in its own right. On the last night of my stay I was taken to one of the private dining halls that overlook one of the pebble gardens, with a rise up against the mountain. The meal was magnificent as before but it tasted even better contemplating the garden that was there, so powerful, yet not overshadowing the meal.
Morning meditations are a must do and the chanting of the heart sutra is alluring and soothing. Even though my Japanese is very limited, it did not matter. I could just listen and breathe in the vibrations of the chanting and basque in the effects that it had.
My Japanese-style room was spacious, very clean, beautifully laid out, and very comfortable. Every nigh after dinner my futon had been laid out and the room prepared for resting.
I want to return again and again to this very special place with very special people.
Thank you Fudo-in and thank you Kouyasan and thank you Kobo Daishi for bringing it into being. It is a heavenly realm.

Two night stay at Fudo-in
Fudo-in is a beautiful temple with lovely gardens, well tended. We really enjoyed our two night stay in the best of their three new Hanare rooms. It was the largest and most comfortable Japanese tatami room we have stayed in, and the only one to have its own bath (so we didn't experience the public bath facilities). The two monks in charge were welcoming and helpful, and one of them spoke some English. Meals were excellent and the location of the temple, set back from the noisy main road, made it very peaceful. Would advise anyone not to take heavy suitcases or bags as it's a long walk through corridors and up stairs to the Hanare rooms. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Not especially cheap, though - I think they are at the upper limit of 'fair'. Just some very minor points we noticed: 1) It's a pity that the 'cedar' bath tub in our room and the 'bamboo' fence outside our terrace were both fake plastic! It was out of keeping with the rest of the surroundings. 2) Internet connection wasn't perfect. Both the wi-fi and LAN connected OK, but many web sites weren't obtainable and we could only receive e-mails not send them. Server problem? 3) It would be nice to have some printed English translation of the morning prayers for foreigners. 4) No drinking water was provided in the room and we were charged when we asked for bottled water. At the price we paid that seemed rather petty.

One of a kind of experience
The location is good that is near the okunoin which we planned to visit and bus connection from Koyasan cable car station is easy and user friendly.
Checking in was easy with a cheerful monk who speaks fluent English and work out the essential timing for dinner,bath time,morning ritual and brakfast at the same time. Which is very effective and no hassle.
Meals were perfect with many varities of tofu and local vegetables. The serving was perfectly discreet and polite.
