Wonderful Experience!
It felt very special to stay in this temple. The room was very big, beautiful and comfortable and had a well functioning heater. There is a huge bathing area that can be used and the food was not only very good but also beautifully prepared. The monks were very friendly and helpful and there is the possibility to join and to some extent to be part of the morning ceremony. Highly recommended.

An excellent small temple to experience a temple stay.
Muryoko-in provides a very authentic temple stay experience in Koyasan. The Japanese style rooms are large and comfortable and provide a good nights stay. Like most temples in Japan the futons can be a little thin for the first timer and the pillows small and somewhat hard when first encountered. The meals here are a stand out being wonderfully prepared and plentiful. A fine example of shojin ryori . The variety of preparations with tofu was outstanding. The morning service is very interesting and well conducted. Being a smaller temple there is opportunity for those staying there to be involved in the ceremonies more than in large temples. The staff both monastic and lay were very friendly and well organised with all procedures explained well.

Shingon daily practice, with a goma ceremony taking place when called for. For a guest, an opportunity to join the rhythm of temple daily life. There's even a small reference library with some European language books. The food however was hit or miss. Over two nights, one breakfast and one dinner was decent if not stellar shojin ryori, the other two meals not so. Especially second night's dinner when a 'hamburger' was served; an unnecessary concession to guests that felt very much against not only the healthy principle of shojin ryori, but also the precepts of not killing. Having ones tofu fake meat cake and eating it too. It was that bad, might hesitate to stay again.

totally overpriced
The location was good and the meals delicious, but the temple was generally wore down and the room had a strong mould small that made it difficult to sleep; the (very little) contact with the people working at the temple was respectfull. The morning ceremony was impressive and definately worth visiting, but it is possible to visit ceremonies (and dine) also without staying at a temple. There are much better sleeping options a 1/4th (!) the price in Koyasan, so it really seemed to me like a turist trap unfortunately.

The temple was really beautiful and the morning ceremony was very moving. The food was absolutely delicous! The temple office was so helpful. Because of heavy rain, I had to skip the first hiking day and they helped me to contact Hotel Nosegawa on the phone and arranged everything the next morning so that I could reach the community bus to Nosegawa mura at the Koyasan Station in time. The abbot also showed great kindness in his conversations with the guests.

Please, stay more than only one night.
Beautiful accommodation with fantastic meals and nice people. However, the peak of my stay was definitely the morning meditation. Awesome experience and a very nice head priest, who gave a great description of the ceremony and history of Koyasan. Definitely worthwhile to stay at this accommodation, but my advice is that unlike me, stay for more than one day in this beautiful place and explore Koyasan. It offers so much and I really regretted planning only one night here.

The Temple Stay was a wonderful stay being greeted by a young Buddhist who greeted us with such warmth and immediately welcomed me and my travler partner. I enjoyed the delicious vegetarian meals and accommodations. The early morning prayer was meditative and very special because we received blessings from Buddhist monks before we began our hike on the Kohechi Route for the next 4 days from Japan's sacred site, Koyasan. I appreciate more so the ceremony and rituals experienced with our hosts.

Guest room is spacious, clean and warm with gas heater in room (November visit). My room was on the upper floor so it took about 20 stair steps to get to room Location is excellent: 3 minutes walk to closest bus stop and main street in Koyasan Baths: Sufficient capacity for guests. Hospitality a plenty
I stayed 2 nights at the Muryoko-in after a 4 day walk on the Kumano Kodo. Check-in was easy, the facilities are adequate, and the hospitality is plenty. Little English is spoke, but everyone makes an effort to help and assist when required. There are a few rules, after all, this is a working Buddhist monastery. Eating, sleeping, and even bathing is precisely scheduled and coordinated. No showers or baths before 1630. Hot water is a bit hit and miss... but the rooms are well heated in winter and I did noticed an AC above the windows. The food is exclusively vegan, no options there. It was delicious and if you are staying more than one night you get to experience a variety of things. The room is very spacious, not TV, not toilet, or running water. You are invited to participate in the morning's prayers. Overall, a great experience... the monks are a lot more forgiving than given credit for... In a town of plenty, this is a good option.

What a unique, beautiful, cultural experience! The morning prayers and fire ritual were deeply spiritual and mesmerising. We felt very privileged to be able to be part of something that is so culturally important to the Japanese people. We were so drawn to it that we attended twice. The monks were warm and welcoming. Such a beautiful temple. Our room was simple but also beautiful, with a lovely view of garden and a welcoming cup of tea with biscuit. Vegetarian meals were carefully prepared, delicious and plentiful. We felt grateful to monks for sharing part of their religious traditions with us.

Cultural experience
The temple was a cultural experience so I guess that’s what you’re really paying for (as it was the most expensive accommodation we had along the trail). The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The food was tasty but the quality was not nearly enough after walking all day (the boys especially went hungry). And don’t be late! Heads up - the only time you’re allowed to use the onsen is between 5pm - 9pm (no matter how sweaty & smelly you are!!).

Great experience
Muryoko-in Temple is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the beauty and tranquility of traditional Japanese culture. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the serene atmosphere and the stunning scenery that surrounded it. The temple itself is beautifully designed, with intricate woodwork and stunning gardens that are meticulously maintained. You will be offer to participate in a ceremony session early in the morning if you want. The warmth and hospitality of the monks who reside at Muryoko-in was wonderful. They were incredibly welcoming, making my visit truly unforgettable. Overall, I would highly recommend Muryoko-in Temple to anyone who is interested in exploring the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Japan. It is an experience before enjoying the Kohechi trail which is a must!

Lovely stay at Muryoko-in
We stayed at Muryoko-in for two nights in January. The room was spacious but spartan - only cushions to sit on, and meals were served in the room on the floor - great care was needed to avoid dropping anything on the tatami mats! Heating was fine. We attended the fire meditation ceremony both mornings and found it very moving - the chanting of the monks was quite beautiful and the concept of burning the hindrances to wishes was a novel way to think about life choices. The food is amazing, especially the dried tofu which looks and tastes for all the world like bread. The monks are kind and gracious. The shukubo is centrally located and Koyasan is quite compact so we found it easy to walk to all the temples, Daimon Gate etc. The old path through the cemetery to Okunion is one of the most atmospheric walks you will ever do.

Good experience, service was lacking.
This is a beautiful facility, and overall we enjoyed our stay. There was a large tour group that stayed the same night as us, however, and I believe for this reason we were not given the level of hospitality that we've experienced at other places we've stayed in Japan. After waiting 45 minutes beyond the time that the staff said they would come get us for dinner, we went down to find that they had forgotten to call us down. Dinner had already been served and it was cold. All of the foreign guests were segregated into a smaller room away from the rest of the guests, which felt a little uncomfortable. One staff member smoked cigarettes in the front hallway, allowing smoke to waft throughout the whole front of the building. The guest rooms have paper walls between them, so the loud snoring of the guest next door would have made it impossible to sleep if I hadn't brought earplugs. The prayer ceremony in the morning was an amazing experience, and was truly an honor to observe and participate in. Breakfast service was a little better than the previous evening, although it still felt a little awkward being segregated as we were. We had a lovely experience, but would request that the hosts be mindful not to devalue or lose sight of their independent travelers when they are attending to a larger group as well.

The only improvement I can suggest is to have a presentation on the temple on the evening of arrival. At the breakfast the following morning, we had an excellent discussion with one of the monks about the morning ceremony we had just attended and about the Shingon Buddhism. We really appreciated the effort and time spent by that particular monk.

Theplace is nice and clean, the staff is very helpful. The chance to attending to the morning fire ceremony is great and unique. Food was delicious. A little english is spoken so communication was not easy and at the first moments it was quite awkward, there is chance of improving with some written notes, for example. Also it could help for a better understanding of the place and the ceremony, Shower available only in the thermal bath, so only 4 stars. It coulf be better to get the chance of washing fore more time during the day and not only during bath hours.

Great location in Koyasan
Location is great. The reception seems less warm that what we experienced everywhere else in Japan and in the Kii Peninsula. English might have been a factor.

Amazing Temple Stay
This was our first night of our Kohechi trail hiking trip. The temple was easily accessible via a bus from the Koyasan cable car station, and we were super impressed with everything--the room was large, well-decorated, and clean; the bath, though small, was also clean and had instructions for guests who did not know how to use a Japanese bath; the meals were well-prepared and tasty; and all the monks were kind and helpful! We had a wonderful time here.

Unforgettable stay
This was definitely a grand finale to my journey along the Kumano Kodō! Everything about it was most wonderful. The monks treated us guests with exceptional hospitality, invited us to their daily morning ceremony and shared insights of their life as a monk. The food was beautiful to look at and breathtakingly delicious, my room twice the side of what I was used to and even equipped with a kotatsu! After my stay at Koyasan I went to Kyoto, but the temples there could compare to the great experience I have had in Koyasan.

Beautiful temple with mesmerizing morning ritual
Beautiful temple. The morning ritual was mesmerizing. At a time, guests were allowed to join in and pray as well! We were also told a story about the great and honorable Kobo Daishi in english at the end of the ritual. Great vegetarian meals. The temple's monks were very hospitable and nice. I had a great conversation before leaving. Shared bathroom was crowded, but overall excellent experience.

Unfortunately we arrived a little late, but the staff had kindly waited for us before closing the gates and had even served us diner, irrigardless of the time. Personally we didn’t enjoy the traditional food as much, but it was nice to try it. It was very special to participate with the morning ceremony. Silly enough, we couldn’t find the light switch, so we had to sleep with the bright light on.

A singular experience, and great food!
Elegantly simple large rooms front a long corridor that runs alongside a picturesque Japanese garden. We arrived on a wet, windy night, so the hot onsen bath was especially welcome, and the food both interesting and delicious. The early morning fire service is about an hour-and-a-half long, but it's definitely worth attending and actually joining near the end. Afterwards at breakfast, the leader, a Swiss-born monk, answered questions and gave us valuable background on the service and the traditions of Kumano Buddhism. It may have been our late afternoon arrival, but information about the schedule and procedures was not readily available when we checked in. This was the only negative in an otherwise wonderful stay.

Great experience. Would like to do it again...
Warm welcome from the monk at check-in. The young monk guided us to our rooms. Dinner was really good, but it was getting cold in the dining room (and same for breakfast). But there was a heater in the room where we slept, so overall it was ok. The morning ceremony was impressive and we were all deeply moved. Without any doubt, one of the highlight of our trip to Kansai. If we would come back to Koyasan, we could stay again in this temple, which is also nicely located in the middle of the village, but still very quiet. Thank you !

Sadly, my experience at this temple was terrible. I was put in an area of the temple that felt like a storage space. The people working in reception were cold and unfriendly. The food was terrible. This was by far my worst experience in my whole time in Japan. The people who worked at the temple did not seem to care at all. I would tell anybody to avoid this place.

The food was really good and the monks very welcoming. The building itself is a working temple and lived in, giving it a warm atmosphere. It's also located off the main tourist streets which makes for quieter surroundings. The morning ceremony with it's chanting and ritual was definitely a highlight of my visit. Afterwards the head monk took time to speak to us all and explain a little of the local history. Spent two night there and I'd happy stay again on my next visit.

Great experience, would recommend it to anyone. The rooms were quite comfortable, good size, and warm (despite the near freezing temperatures outside). One of the better baths that we stayed in and the food was fairly tasty (but cold). The reception from the monks was quite special. They were very friendly, and it was an honour to observe their morning fire ritual. Likewise, we enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions afterwards and learn more about it over tea, in a way that was quite respectful and not pushy or evangelical. Thank you.

Room was lovely, spacious and Japanese style. Shared, gender separated Onsen bath was great. Dinner was fantastic. Breakfast was simple buddhist cuisine. Located well within the town. We had an issue where we were given incorrect information about where to eat our breakfast, even though I confirmed in both Japanese and English. Also, we were not informed about the morning zazen, which unfortunately meant we missed out. The monks were very friendly and helpful, however appeared quite busy and it felt as if it would be a hindrance if you were to ask them any questions. Muryoko-in
We expected a peaceful setting but, although the room was beautiful, it overlooked a busy road. The monks should supply a list of rules in each room - if this had been done I would not have been reprimanded for naively wearing a yucata to the morning service. The food was great but the place is overpriced.

Good for one visit
This temple stay was interesting in that it offered a unique opportunity to worship with the monks as they did their goma ceremony. The meals were tasty and filling. However, having toilets that always felt grungy and had little privacy (right in the hallway for anyone walking by to hear or see, as well as being coed) was tough. In addition, the old creaky floors meant I was worried about waking up other guests by going down the hall to the toilet, since they could hear everything. The shoji doors were beautiful, but afforded little privacy and the rooms at night were light enough for me to read a book when I kept being awakened. The monks were friendly and the trainees were good with their service, but I would opt for a different place to stay if I went back to Koya-San.

A nice experience
I stayed in Muryoko-in with my parents for one night. The service provided by the monks was more than we expected. The room is big enough to have three futons prepared for the night. The vegetarian dinner and breakfast were very tasty. The morning Buddhist ceremony was probably the highlight of our stay. After the ceremony, the resident monk of a Swiss origin told us about the history of Koyasan although I expected some discussion afterwards. (I was in Muryoko-in 4 years ago and the guests could then ask questions about the ceremony, the temple or Buddhism so I was disappointed there was no discussion this time.) The breakfast is served in a common room (unlike dinner which is served in the guests' room) so it is difficult to sit Japanese style if you are not used to it. Overall, it was a pleasant stay.

For the experience
This is not a place for night-owls - wonderful and diverse dishes, monk-delievered to our room by 6PM. Only action after this is a bath in onsen then to sleep on the tatami mat ready for 6AM meditation with the monks - and this was amazing and not to be missed! We had a good night's sleep despite the paper-thin walls and creaky floors. Toilets are just OK but you can't get everything in a working ancient Buddhist temple - what you get is heaps of atmosphere and experience of Temple life in a superb Japanese mountain town.

Wonderful temple stay!
Excellent vegetarian meals, nice communal bath, beautiful guest rooms, traditional and therefore thin walls, but all guests room had one empty room between them to increase privacy and a sound barrier. Great central area and very helpful staff. The opportunity to have an English explanation of the morning meditation after the fact by the resident German monk was so helpful, as well as the Q&A tea time that followed. Only a little curious as to why we did not eat breakfast with the nice Japanese guests, perhaps they were on a different program, but I would have liked to eat all together as guests.

Excellent Monastery Stay!
We had a wonderful 3 days at Muryoko-in. The rooms was really comfortable and beautiful, the bath was very good, and food (vegetarian) was plenty and tasty. The staff was very good and helped us a lot with their good English. We had a chance to participate in the morning Goma ceremony, and afterwards were invited to tea/coffee with the head priest of the monastery. A monk served as translator, and we had a really rich conversation. We felt very welcome there, not at all as intruders in the daily life of the monastery. I highly recommend a stay at Muryokoin.

I very much enjoyed my stay at Muryoko-in, although as I visited at what was clearly a busy time, there was little opportunity for individual attention. As a single traveller, I would rather have had an opportunity to eat with others for my evening meal than having this served in my room.

Very good immersive experience.
Good simple tatami room with lovely outlook to garden. Vegetarian food well made and beautifully set out. Went both mornings to the morning ceremony which was a very good personal experience; mesmerising. Bath hours limited to afternoon/evening. Central location. Multilingual monk Kurt was very helpful with explanations of history and Shingon Buddhism.

July 2012: one night in Koyasan
Lovely, traditional temple: unfortunately summer rain prevented much time in the pleasant gardens. The highlight was the 6am fire-ceremony during which all guests were invited to go into the inner room. Afterwards an English- and German-speaking monk spent some time explaining the ceremony and teaching guests a mantra to chant. We were disappointed that meals were not taken communally with other guests, but instead each group of guests ate separately.
