概要
日本に川下りは数あれど 丸太を組んだ筏に乗って川下りを体験できるのは、ここ北山村だけ。
筏師が造る筏で大自然の中を人力だけで下る北山川の筏下り。
筏流しは、切り出した木材を筏に組み、川を流して下流の新宮市まで運搬する手段でした。
この筏を造る技術、筏を操る技を今に残し受け継ぐのが北山川観光筏下りです。
観光筏下りとして昭和54年にスタートして以来、大自然の神秘、スケールが生み出す予想出来ないスリルと感動が評判を呼び、年間約7000人の皆様に体験していただいております。
子どもの頃、丸太の船に憧れた方も多いはず。
そんな冒険心を満たしてくれる北山川の筏下りにチャレンジしてみませんか？

Fantastic Tour – Even Better Than Expected
This tour was truly the highlight of our first visit to Japan. Everything was well-organized, and the experience was both exciting and memorable. We do wish there were more English-speaking guides, but thankfully, some kind locals helped translate parts of the tour. Overall, a fantastic experience that we’ll never forget. Highly recommended!

Wonderful rafting

Amazing
The Kumano and Wakayama areas in general are beautiful, with so much to see and do. The landscapes are unique, and there's so much to see. It's a wonderful place. The only downside is getting there, as the roads sometimes make the trip difficult. But it's so worth it. I'd love to go back.

It rained, but it was great!
The tour was probably the most enjoyable thing we did during our 3 weeks in Japan. It is very well organised, from ticket staff, to bus drivers and especially the rafting crew. There was mist and light rain for most of the day - not a major concern as we were going to get wet anyway. The weather conditions added to the ethereal atmosphere and made the tour seem really special. Some waterfalls at various locations were a bonus. The log rafts have a quality construction and are quite stable through the rapids. It was good to see how they're dismantled and transported at the end. Upon return to base, the paid public onsen next to the tourist info centre is highly recommended - just the thing after a long day on the water if you're feeling a little cold. The only negative is some of the winding narrow roads to get there if driving yourself, especially from the terraced rice paddies, which are a tourist attraction in themselves. Overall - we absolutely loved the experience.

Amazing Experience
We had an incredible time log rafting down the river. All aspects were great—communication in advance, check in, safety, and fun. Lots of fun! We absolutely loved the experience. Our guides were great to point out local wildlife, and so we saw lots of animals while floating down the river. Couldn’t recommend more highly.

A unique experience
The log rafting was such a unique experience and really felt one of a kind. The center was easy to find and the staff members were helpful! Limited English but still easy to understand what they needed from us. The boatmen were great at their craft and made the 1 hr + journey a joy to be on. The Dorokyo gorge is truly a sight to see. Would highly recommend to others and will definitely bring my family back to experience!

Fun way to see the gorge
We caught the bus from Shingu and it was a beautiful scenic drive. The log rafting was great fun and suitable for all ages. Most of the instructions and information was in Japanese but our boatmen made every effort to explain things in English as well.The gorge is stunning and definitely worth seeing. It was very hot in September and I recommend wearing a hat. You can take your phone or camera in a dry bag and the rafts have a water bottle holder. If you get the local bus you will be there for the whole day but there is a store where we bought lunch and drinks. Great day out.

Gorgeous view and tour for the whole family

Dorokyo Gorge
Felt safe the whole time but it was exhilarating traveling down the rapids in the raft. Guides could speak a little English. Only things is I wish they could have an English speaking guide to explain the gorge. Unique experience and would highly recommend it.

Great fun and very unique experience!
Great fun riding down the river, be prepared to get wet when you hit the rapids! On the river for around 2 hours. Scenery is beautiful, with the raft going at a leisurely pace to take it all in when you’re not standing up for the rapids. Highly recommend.

Beautiful experience
This was a fun & lovely experience. Log rafting is a more family friendly version of white water rafting, where the professionals steer the raft for you and you can just relax and enjoy the ride. The scenery is breathtaking and I wish I brought along a camera to capture it (I was worried it would get wet but a plastic cover would've been enough). The rafters only speak Japanese, so unfortunately missed on the insight they were giving about rafting & the history of the area. But overall a wonderful experience, and definitely worth the trip.

Good Experience to try :)
It’s nice to have a very clear & vert strong sunshine on that day, river is very cool. Everybody feel exciting before going to the log rafting. We may have a little over expectation to the log rafting, actually the river is not that rapid, and most of the time is very calm and stable. So we no need to worry about getting wet during the trip. We truly appreciate and admire the men who is responsible to drive the direction of the log rafting. It is really a not easy job to be done.

Interesting experience
It's very interesting tour experiencing how wood transfer in the past. The "rafters" are experience and told stories/special points in the tour (it would be more better if I know Japanese ^_^;). They are also friendly that asking our kids to try rafting.

Fun and exciting
We had a great time log rafting down the river. The staff was professional and friendly. They even provided complimentary drinks for the trip. The bus ride to/from the Park was free for log rafting customers which was nice! The only downside is that we had to kill 3 hrs until the bus came to pick us up and there are no restaurants nearby.

Unforgettable experience

It was fun and one of a kind!
The gentleman at the tourist centre is friendly and courteous upon our registration. A bus took us to the river where the raft was ready and the staff were all pleasant, helpful and lively. There were about 5 turbulences to experience, other than that was scene appreciation on the raft. The rafting took maybe 1.5 hours. We were taken back by bus to the tourist centre. Great pictures were taken and we were delighted to purchase for keepsake! Little or no English was spoken but it was fun and we enjoyed the log rafting very much! Would recommend it!

The activity was fun - just a slight hiccup as the original morning session was cancelled (only found out when I reached there) and had to join the afternoon one, which has a tighter schedule since the bus back to Kumanoshi was almost right after.

Beautiful and fun journey
We have totally four persons joined the log rafting. (My parents, myself and nephew) We all felt fun and great for the experience. The river water is cool and calm mostly. And the drop is fun every time! The staff paddle it so well, it is not a easy task. Respect!

We appreciated the helpful customer service provided by Fumiko when we were trying to book the tour; she did her best to make sure that we made appropriate arrangements in order to get to the tour on time. Wonderful experience
Our family really enjoyed this rafting trip. Part of the adventure was getting up to the Kitayama village! Roads are great, but the last 5 km is single lane, super-curvy road that gave us a taste of what was there before. The rafting staff were excellent. There are about 5 or 6 rapids - nothing scary, but definitely exciting. In-between, there was wonderful scenery, and opportunity to cool off in the river. We went in mid-July (which may not matter, since the river is downstream from a dam, and its flow thus regulated). On return, there is a nice restaurant for lunch (but closes at 3 pm, so plan accordingly). Highly recommended!

Nice experience
Nice experience to tried log rafting kumano travel. But it will be more good if have english guide/speaker in tour and have many photo in tour like photo grup tour & photo when river very slowly to take view of the mountain. The tour have idea to give lunch because difficult to solo travel to find restaurant to eat around there, 2 hours wait bus without lunch or something is very waste time to traveller if not go with family.

Total disappointment
If you are looking for that bucket list adventure then save your time and money. This area is extremely difficult to get to, requiring hours upon hours of travel, overnight planning, etc. I did all this, at a considerable expense, just to check off that bucket list item and have a once in a lifetime experience. Bottom line is that you spend about an hour on the Gorge and about 5 minutes of it going through 9 (call it 4 real) rapids. If you want an interesting and scenic way to experience the gorge then this is definitely it, but don't come here expecting adventure or excitement. The actual experience of rafting the river on a log raft was cool, but its slow and boring for the most part. My 71 year old mother went and at no point did she feel the true excitement of white water rafting which i have done in several places around the world. These are class 1 rapids, maybe a couple of class 2 but the time between rapids is too long and the pace too slow.

Easy to use but a slight delay with enquiries
The process was easy and straightforward. We even contacted staff to ask for changing dates outside the deadline due to special circumstances and they were happy to help. The trip was smooth, although the staff at the Kitayama Tourist Centre do not speak much English, we managed to do the tour. One thing should be noted is that the log rafting tour guides only speak Japanese throughout the tour which was a shame because we would have liked to understand what they were saying, especially when it came to being safe on the water as well as the history of the river. But everywhere in Japan is like this, especially in the villages. We were not aware.

First time and loved it!
Staff didn't really speak English but that did not matter, they were also very nice. Just follow what everyone else is doing! Cool experience. Recommend wearing a hat and putting on sun cream as you'll be under the sun the whole time.
