概要
小辺路沿い三浦口にある農家民宿
高野山から熊野本宮への小辺路沿い三浦口にある農家民宿政所（まんどころ）です。高野山から歩いた場合、野迫川村で1泊したあとの2日目のお宿、熊野本宮から歩いた場合、十津川温泉で1泊したあとの2日目のお宿となります。伯母子峠と三浦峠に挟まれた非常に山深い小さな集落。元気に農家を営む女将が、おおらかに迎えてくれます。細かなルールはありませんが、一農家のお宅にお世話になるつもりで、マナーを守ってお過ごしください 食事は農家の田舎料理です。元五百瀬小学校すぐ近く、県有形文化財にもなっている大きな門が目印です。

トイレにお母様の紙おむつが広げて置いてあり、洗面台も汚くて客のコップも無く、トイレに行くのにお母様がテレビを見てる茶の間と主人がいる台所を通らなければ行けず、高齢のお母様を世話（介護）してる姿も見え、大変そうで頑張って欲しいけど、特に外国人は泊めて欲しくないと思いました。

Good food and an interesting place to stay
We found this an interesting place to stay, seeing how people in farming villages live. They showed us a promotional video from probably about 20 years ago showing a lively village where people were harvesting and making food together. It looks different now, less lively, probably because the young people all left for the big cities. The host of this Minshuku worked very hard to make the stay pleasant for us. The room was comfortable and the food was excellent, including the lunch box. The bathroom and toilet were not the cleanest but who cares for one night.

True Japanese Farmhouse Experience

Warm hospitality but lacking hygiene.
Shigeru-san and his mother are the kindest people and I had such a warm reception here. But it must be said that hygiene is sorely lacking here. I have sympathy for him, as it must be such hard work to run the minshuku and care for his mother at the same time and I worry about what is going to happen to them in the future. But the bathroom is full of mould, the kitchen is a chaos and I wish I could just send some cleaners through to help him get it back to the old glory it was. They were so wonderfully kind, but they do need support to keep running this. Having said that, the food was delicious and his bento box one of the best I had on the trip.

Isolated retreat along the Kohechi

高齢の男性が母親の介護をしながらの宿経営は、さぞご苦労だと思います。夕食・朝食とも彩鮮やかで豊富な品数で、美味しくいただきました。 テレビ中継されてたビデオを観るせていただいたり、お話していただき、楽しい時間を過ごしました。 ・部屋の隅の埃など、掃除が行き届いていない。 ・浴室のシャンプー等空のものが置かれていた。 ・洗濯機を無料で使わせていただきながらではありますが、置いてある洗剤が全て「空」でした。 ・ファンヒーターを付けていただきながらですが、灯油が無いのか、奥の部屋は、途中で止まってしまいました。隣室の方は付いていたので問題なしでした。 翌朝、出発時には、シルバーカーを押しながら、林道まで出てくださり、ずーと見送っていただきました。 気になる点はありましたが、心温まる出会いでした。ありがとうございました。

古い農家の家に泊まりに行った感じです。でも精一杯のおもてなしをしてもらえ、食事も普通の家庭料理ですがボリュームがありお腹いっぱいになりました。お弁当は三軒の中で一番よかったです。

Our most memorable and favorite place of the whole trip!
This is a simple home that the mother and son have opened up for hikers to come rest. They were super friendly and so warm and welcoming to hikers who came to stay or needed help. It is located in a small farming town with not a single store, but they fed us so well that we were full. A great place to experience the hospitality of the local countryside in Japan, and we loved the hosts!

Warm reception and very cozy homestay
We had a super cozy stay at the Minshuku Mandokoro. Even though our Japanese skills are very bad our hosts made us feel at home right away. The food was really delicious and the portions so generous that we had trouble finishing our meal even after a long day of hiking. The breakfast and lunch box were also very nutritious and made with a lot of care. We were a bit sad that we had leave already the next morning!

homegrown rice

The hosts were very friendly and tried their best. The meals were good standard with plenty of food. The accommodation is not to paying guest standards anymore. Bathroom is shared with the owners and it is actually quite dirty. The airconditioning would not have reached our room if the man stations in adjoining room didn’t open the partition. I feel for this family as seems they need the money but perhaps tourists need to be very aware of the conditions and the cost to be lowered.

We walked the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route and needed an accomodation in Miuraguchi, were only two are available. The Minshuku has been taken over by the son of the previous owner and it has deteriorated significantly. The rooms were nice and clean, but the kitchen and the bathroom were very dirty and messy. The new owner has otherwise been very helpful and nice.

Rustic Place, Friendly Hosts

I wish that I could give 10 stars for the location, meals, and the kind and generous hospitality. It was a perfect spot to stay on the Kumano Kodo, and it was the only place we stayed where we were welcomed into someone's home. We were so honored to be able to stay with them and we so greatly appreciated their warm kindness. It was fun to see the TV show that highlighted their home, and it allowed us to see how many years they have been caring for pilgrims along the way. We send our love and thanks.

Minshuku Mandokoro was our favourite stay during the whole hike! We felt like honoured guests but also dear friends, as the owner and his mother took very good care of us. The family introduced us the history of the surrounding area and showed documentaries. One of the other hikers who spent the night with us had hurt their leg, and the owner offered to bring them to their next stay, which was very kind of them. Our room was very warm and the futon was very soft. We were very happy to use the washing machine to wash our clothes and the dryer in our room ensured that they were already dry by next morning. The food was delicious, and we were very surprised to have fulfilling vegetarian food in the middle of mountains. There is no cellular reception in the area, which adds to an eerie, "Spirited away" feel of the village. ありがとうございました !

Great location with room for improvement
We stayed here for one night during our hike and really appreciated the great location directly on the trail, very convenient for walkers. The host was kind and we truly respect and support him, especially knowing that he is also caring for his mother. The room was simple but fine for an overnight stay. Dinner and breakfast were of medium quality, not exceptional, but decent and filling after a day of hiking. Unfortunately, the bath area was not as clean as we had hoped, which slightly impacted our overall experience. Nonetheless, we are grateful for the hospitality and understand the challenges of running such an accommodation under personal responsibilities. With a few improvements, this place has great potential!

A traditionnal Experience
Honestly, based on my previous experiences, I truly believe this guesthouse deserves more stars. Of course, it’s not luxury accommodation, but as pilgrims—especially those used Kumano Kodo —we’re not looking for five-star hotel service. Madam Mandokoro and her son are wonderful hosts, making us feel welcome both at mealtime and in the spacious room with an extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom could use some updating, but out of all the places I’ve stayed in Japan, this one felt the most timeless—probably one of the last guesthouses still keeping alive a fading Japanese tradition. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a memorable stay that you’ll remember for a long time.

Really amazing and authentic
Really unique stay at what is essentially someone's guest room. Our host was so accommodating and you can tell her really cared about our stay and the history of his home stay on the kohechi. Food was amazing and hospitality was top notch. Very memorable stay.

The guesthouse seems to have been the „agricultural“ pride of the kohechi trail a long time ago. Now, although the owner is very kind and nice, it doesn’t fulfil international tourism standards anymore with respect to cleanliness and hygiene, unfortunately. Regrettably not to be recommended.

Interesting Farmstay
The room is very traditional tatami and separated from the neighbour by a slide across screen. Everything is dated and there is lots of junk and dusty things around the house. The bathroom is through the kitchen which was very dirty and food was lots of little plates which were mostly not to our taste and didn’t leave us feeling very full.

A unique experience; nice room and futon.
I'll be honest — this wasn't the highlight of my stays along the Iseji and Kohechi routes of the Kumano Kodo. Let's just say it had "character" but I also recognise that I was in a remote valley in the Kii Mountains and was prepared to relax my expectations accordingly. But my room was clean and large and the futon was one of the most comfortable I slept on in my 10 days of walking. There was plenty of food, not quite the same standard as my other accommodations but I also appreciate that Miura-guchi is very out of the way and the proprietor worked hard to serve his guests. Bathroom lost a couple of points for lack of cleanliness. But great location and an interesting experience. If you stay here, see it as a reminder that you are in the deep countryside and adjust expectations accordingly.

Heartfelt hospitality
May not be the most glamorous place to stay along the Kumano Kodo. What it lacks in finesse, it more than makes up for in heartfelt hospitality. The mother and son who run it continue to care for weary travelers despite their own challenges. We were welcomed with generous portions of home-cooked food, warm conversation, and comfortable amenities. I highly recommend staying here to support this family-run business and help keep the experience of exploring rural Japan along the Kumano Kodo alive.

difficult for a man to run a guesthouse by himself
clearly it was a nice guesthouse but needs a lot of repairing and cleaning right now, big hole on guest room’s door, mold in restroom, overcooked fish served in dinner, and at 7:30pm you have to go back to your room, because the living room is the sleeping place of the owner, he needs to sleep. And a lady’s voice talking to herself in the middle of the night, woke me up and never slept well ever since. The man is trying so hard to take this guesthouse from his mother’s hand but it is apparently difficult for him to manage right now.

Perfect location along the Kohechi route
The owner is very helpful and friendly and the Minshuku is perfecly located along the Kohechi route. The food was varied and lovingly prepared. The lunchbox was very tasty! The guestrooms and eating area are well maintained but the bathroom and the rest of the house are a little bit run down. Nevertheless we were very happy with our stay.

Needs to be cleaned so deeply
Location excellent if you ar doing Kohechi route. Bed room had an adequate size and was nice but full of old stuff, the beds were very clean. Just arrive to the house, first thing we met was an ashtray completely full of cigarrette butts, really disgusting, and the room crowded of unnecesary stuff full of dust. The kitchen was a completely mess, full of grease, complete disorder and again ashtrays full of cigarrette butts, completely disgusting I could not eat anything prepared there. The bath-room was the same, really really dirty. Its a pitty because the place could be a very nice stopp for the Kumano Kodo but needs to be cleaned very deeply. I'm alpinist and I'm use to sleep in all kind of huts and places and do not ask for a super comfy place while hiking but I can not accept so much dirtiness that became even unhealthy.

予定より早くついてしまいましたが、丁寧に対応して頂きました。築300年の建物に泊まれる事が無いので、建具などみているだけで、感激しました。寝具は清潔でよく眠れました。お風呂などは普通のお家の感じです。洗濯機も貸して頂きました。 ホテルの様な設備はありませんが、山歩きの合間で宿があるだけでありがたいです。 息子さんの手作りのお料理、美味しかったです。お母さんのお話も楽しかったです。ありがとうございました。

This was a difficult night. The reception was awkward and unfriendly, felt like I was intruding. The proprietor's mother seemed thoroughly over the idea of guests. The guestroom is central, with sliding doors on three sides, one of which is the old woman's bedroom; she retired very early, snored, then woke in the night, when they both rustled and talked loudly for quite a while. He slept with TV on low in living room, just on other side of one 'wall' of sliding doors. The rest of the house is chaotic and messy. The bathroom shared of course, which is fine and expected, but again felt in the way. There's no effort to clean up or provide space and no privacy whatsoever. In years of travelling across Japan, this was easily the most uncomfortable night ever spent. In the past perhaps they were more welcoming and made more of an effort, but not remotely up to standard - especially for the price. The food was largely microwaved, but good, as was the lunchbox. He tried in that area. With only only two places to stay in Miura-guchi, the location is one plus.

Awesome part of our Kumano experience. Lovely hosting and fantastic help with our situation, which was avoiding the incoming remnants of a typhoon, with a lot of fun trying to clear the language hurdles. All in all an authentic cultural experience with lovely people.

Very nice host
The host is a great cook and was very helpful. He explained to me how to catch a bus the next day to get to Hotel Subaru after the hike over Miura-toge. He even telephoned to double-check, if the bus is running regularly the next day. As it was very hot, I was so thankful to take the bus after hike over the pass. The host, his elderly mother and I spent a very lovely evening chatting together.

Don't know how to rate this one.
This one is very hard to rate. You are, in effect, in someone's house (and bedroom I think). Only 1 room. You go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. Host very friendly and food was really food. Just a weird place. Host slept on lounge room floor. But really friendly walked us nearly to the trailhead to make sure we got away ok.

Very humble accommodation just on the track. A lovely family. Rooms and specially bath and toilet aren’t very clean, but it’s the real experience of a traditional Japanese countryside house. The food was very good, completely homemade. And they were very friendly and collaborative.

We expected very little as we trudged into this farmhouse after a huge day of walking. However our host and his mother made us feel so welcome. And the food was better than most restaurants. The rice was grown by our hosts and the pickles made locally. The presentation was gorgeous and the flavour delicious. We slept better that night than any night previously or since. The beds were so comfortable. Thoroughly recommend this place.

小辺路ルート2泊目でお世話になりました。 当日夕方近くから雨予報だったので、朝早く出発したこともあり、かなり早く到着したのですが、快く受け入れてくれました。とてもアットホームな感じで、田舎の親戚宅に来たような懐かしい感じが受けました。翌日も姿か見えなくなるまで手を振り見送ってくださるなど、温もりも感じることができる満足度高いお宿でした。

Historical building and sweet hosts
Minshuku Mandokoro is among the most impressive things I had during the trip. The front gate and the house were old, but sweet and warm, just like home. The old lady and her mid-aged son were almost always smiling and ready to help with anything. There was a tall ginko tree with beautiful yellow leaves in the tiny elementary school just next to the minshuku. The village of Miuraguchi was small and calm. The facilities and meals were home-like, and that’s exactly what a Minshuku should feel like. Perhaps not everyone appreciates it, but I liked the atmosphere of the old house and people living in it very much. It’s the place I would strongly recommend in this trip.

Authenthic and lovely farm stay!

Homestay
This wasn’t the flashiest place we stayed but it certainly had the most personality! There are only 2 places to stay in this tiny village so we certainly didn’t complain. The food was plentiful. Very welcoming
We arrived here very early and soaking wet! Despite our appearance, we were welcomed in immediately and our wet clothes were attended to. We were invited to wash everything in the machine provided and they took care to ensure that things would be dry for the next day. The mother and son who run the place could not have been nicer and more helpful, whilst being fun to be with. Google translate and sign language helped us all to have an enjoyable time here. Anyone staying here will experience a true rural Japanese life - I recommend this to anyone.

玄関横の廊下的なスペースでしたが、泊めていただけて助かりました。予約が取れなかったところ、恐らく熊野トラベルさんからお願いして泊めていただけたものと思いますので、感謝します。なので、部屋の評価はしません。普通の農家をそのまま民宿にしているため、隣室との区切りが障子なのは仕方ないものと考えます。料理は普通の家庭料理で、山中の民宿であればこんなものかと諦めますが、同宿していた外国人はかなり残されており、気になるところです。宿泊費を考えると、もっといいモノが出てきても・・・と思いますが、宿が少ないという立地上、しょうがないか。清潔な浴衣やタオルがあったのはよかったと思います。

奈良のおばあちゃん家
高野山から小辺路歩きの３軒目で宿泊しました。 周りには自動販売機が１台あるのみの昔ながらの集落といった感じで、日没後の星空がとてもきれいでした。 お宿はとても歴史のあるお家で風情を感じられました。お部屋も広く、エアコンはついていませんでしたが扇風機で十分快適に過ごせました。玄関を入って正面のお部屋がリビングダイニングになっていて、お食事のあとは熊野古道の歴史や今までに立ち寄られた旅人の方々のお話など盛り上がりとても楽しかったです。隣に小学校があり、そこのWi-Fiが使えるようになっています。トイレとお風呂場はそれぞれ１つずつで共用なので順番に使わせてもらいました。 晩ご飯、朝ご飯ともボリュームたっぷりでしっかり栄養補給できました。地元で採れた野菜やお米を使っているということでした。翌日の小辺路歩きのお弁当も、こちらのリクエストに応えてめはり寿司を作っていただけました。朝は早く出発しましたが丁寧に見送っていただいて、なんだかお別れが寂しかったです。 とても心が温まるお宿でした。

Highlight of our trip!
This home stay was the highlight of our trip! Meeting Ikuko and her son was amazing. Be aware that they don't speak much English, we used Google Translate to communicate. But that was half the fun. They are so full of laughter and curiosity. Their home is rich with history and stories. We had a blast. They took incredible care of us and made sure we knew exactly where we were going the next day - checked the weather and bus schedules for us. I'll never forget them or our time on the Kumano Kodo!

A small remote village, and staying in a house with origins going back 300 years. The hosts were so willing to share their place and their knowledge. Fortunately my daughter has some japanese language skills and she was able to gain more knowledge and understanding about their place. Subarashi!
The owner was very kind to pick us up from the bus stop as we were not able to hike due to an ankle injury. To our pleasant surprise, he was waiting at the bus stop when we arrived. This gave us time to rest in the afternoon instead of waiting at the bus stop to connect to the community bus service a few hours later. Mother was very friendly and fun, even though we didn't speak Japanese, I had a great time "conversing" with her! We enjoyed staying at his old samurai house and of course, the delicious supper and breakfast that gave us an extra booster for our journey.

Quaint and friendly homestay
A unique experience, and the most remote we felt during our Kumano Kodo. The hosts (mother and son) are warm and friendly and will look after you with care; it is still their house and not that large, so be prepared to work around them a bit and adapt to their rules. The one downside for us was that the bath was much too hot to use (the only time we had that in Japan) - but that is very minor. Would recommend and not an experience we will forget!

Quiet Minshuku with Adorable Hosts
This was our third night of our Kohechi trail hiking trip. The minshuku was a bit hard to find because a car road had been blocked off since the winter, and we took a trail that had a sign saying "Minshuku Mandokoro" instead of the marked road. Once we got to the minshuku, though, we realized that it was very close to the trail head the next day. The minshuku is where Tsuji-san and her son (also Tsuji-san) live, so the bathroom was slightly crowded, but it was nevertheless a welcome facility. The meals were prepared by Tsuji-san's son and were simple and tasty. We had nothing else planned for the night, and chatted with both Tsuji-sans for hours before bed. Traditional countryside guesthouse
Very nice guesthouse and hosts. Our bedroom was large and confortable, but as japanese traditional style the walls were like paper and we heard the other guests snoring in the other rooms. The dinner and breakfast were generous and tasty! But a bit too much food for our gaijin's stomach. Indeed it was really nice to stay here !

Comfortable spot for the night
This Minshuku was just what was needed after a long day. The room was basic but comfortable and clean. Meals were balanced and plentiful. The one bathroom was shared with the family so guests must be mindful of respecting their privacy. The hosts were very welcoming and hospitable.

アットホームな農家民宿

Very friendly owners
Our stay at Minshuku Mandokoro was very pleasant. We had a large and comfortable room. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. The bathroom was clean. The neighbourhood is quiet and we had a good night's rest (only disturbed by the barking of the watchful family dog). We enjoyed the meals, particularly the bento that the owners prepared for the following day (delicious fresh fish and a little something sweet for dessert).

Minshuku Mandokoro during Kohechi trail (Day 2)
The homestay style experience in Mishuku Mandokoro was overall very positive. It was easy to find and very close to the trail. The room was perfectly fine and the service very hospitable. There are only two negative comments: 1) There is only one shared toilet and shower. This means that it is often occupied and especially in the morning it can slow down the hike as it can get busy. 2) The bento box: We had given instructions that we do not eat meat, but we had small sausages in the bento box. This was an unfortunate mishap, as otherwise the food was very nice and without meat.

Authentic Homestay
The house itself has significant historical value and you can see why. It is a cosy little place and the couple that run are friendly enough. Be prepared for dinner to be served at 5pm and be prepared for the hosts to be up at 5am preparing breakfast in a not-so-quiet fashion. Food was good though and the location is right along the trail. Definitely an authentic Kumano experience.

奈良県の文化遺産でもある母屋と高麗門がある政所。約30畳の上の間と20畳の続きの間が客室です。天井は吹き抜けで太い柱や垂木がはしり、豪快そのものの造作。隣の部屋には、ご家族の居間があり、ここがお客の食堂を兼ねます。かざらない接待が気持ちを和ませてくれました。翌朝、早立ちで、氷点下にもかかわらず、女将さんには見えなくなるまで手を振っていただきました。

感謝！
小辺路を歩くために利用させていただきました。 伯母子岳の最後の石畳で軽く転倒し腰を痛め、三浦峠以降は断念しバスで十津川へ移動し、熊野三山観光に切り替えました（笑）しかしながら、本宮のみの参拝予定でしたが、熊野奥宮の玉置神社と三山すべてお参りすることができ、心が洗われました。小辺路踏破が目的でしたが、今回はお参りのための旅だったようです。 そして、あらためて思い返せば、高野山の宿坊や素晴らしい温泉旅館と泊まりながらも、政所さんのお宿が一番思い出に残っています。お母さんに息子さんに愛犬マグちゃん、しみじみと温かく、殺伐とした環境で仕事に追われていた日常を過ごしていた自分にとって最高に安らぐ時間となりました。お母さんのお料理はとても美味しく、ビールもよく冷えており最高の夕食でした。お弁当で持たせていただいた手作りのお米でつくったおにぎり、玉置山の頂上でいただきました。あらためて、食のありがたみを感じることができました。 お母さんと一緒の写真を見るたびにいまだにほっこりとすることができます。 機会があれば是非とも訪れていただきたいと思います。

Grumpy host, uncomfortable stay
I don't know it it was the fact that we were not Japanese, but we felt very unwelcome. The lady host prepared dinner at 5pm (instead of 6:30pm) because her favourite TV show was to start at 7pm and she didn't want to miss it (the eating area is where the TV is located). So by 6pm we had had dinner and had to go to our rooms because the host (grandma-like and his son) wanted to watch the show... We went to sleep around 8pm and at 4am they woke us up doing all kind of noises and banging of door and cupboards..... Food was ok and quality of the bed sheets and futon very good. All was very clean. Also, there is only on toilet shared with both of the hosts and you have to go through the kitchen to get there. We went to brush our teeth before going to bed, so we had to go through the TV area and she asked "where are you going"? in angry Japanese...quite uncomfortable. I wouldn't stay here again if I could help it.

Hidden In A Mountain Knoll
The home has been recognized by the prefectural government as having architectural and historical value and, indeed, the home exudes those qualities and a simple beauty. The hosts are very kind. The matriarch is by turn commanding and humorous and attentive. She shows a lot of love for life, for her region and home and for her guests. The meals were generous and varied and, of course naturally and locally sourced. The mountain trail is very near the property and Shinto spirits abound in the forest, boulders, trees, river, mountains and rice paddies. Exceptional. Unique.

Day One Accomodation
We walked from Koyasan to Miuraguchi day one. I think we caught the owners by surprise when we arrived at 3pm as they expected us much later. They started cooking as soon as we arrived while we cleaned up. We had a good chat, great food and a couple of beers before bed. I really cant fault anything. Great place to stay.

Fun homestay
We had a delightful stay at Mandokoro. As advertised, this is definitely a homestay experience! There isn't much privacy as the rooms and bathroom very much in the family's space, but the host is lovely and welcoming and makes you feel right at home. The night we stayed there were three of us guests, and so with the bathroom and bath being in the same area there were times when I think some of us didn't quite feel comfortable with using the facilities. I was a bit surprised to find the host using the sink in the bathroom as I bathed (though there was a tinted glass door between us), but I took it as a sign that she felt comfortable with me. Definitely a more positive experience if you can speak some Japanese, as the host is a delight!

My husband and I had a very pleasant stay at Minshuku Mandokoro. Her home is a traditional listed building and located almost directly next to the Kumano Kodo hiking trail. It was our only "homestay" in Japan and we really enjoyed it. The service was very sweet and her home cooked food delicious. Since this is a homestay in an old listed building, the rooms have not their own bath, but this is known before. The bath is shared with the owners, it was very clean and this was no problem for us.

A homestay, welcoming, good meals but no privacy at all
You stay in an open space in a private home, don't expect any privacy at all. The couple makes a real effort to welcome you. Contrary to the website information, there is wifi (from the school opposite, i think). You can arrive at any time, even before 3 pm. There is no other choice here, and there are no shops.

+The meals were almost too copious. And it was good. +It's located not too far from the Kumano trail. And there are indications after you leave the main road. +The people in charge are nice. They don't speak english though. But they are really helpfull and understanding if you can speak a bit of japanese. -The room was biiig ! But oh so cold (it was March) ! At least the bed was heated with some kind of system... -The bathroom/toilets were a bit further in the house and also really cold.

Cosy Minshuku run by very friendly and caring people. A few days before I walked the Kohechi a landslide had destroyed part of the road between Miura Guchi and Totsukawa and my host was very helpful in providing information on how to get around the obstruction. The food was also delicious.

Hospitable Service

Staying with a family in a village
The homeliest experience on the Koheichi route. Because of the inclement weather, the owner Mr Shigeaki Tsuji and his mother were very worried about my plan to cross over Miuratoge the next day and they called up their fellow villagers to check upon the depth of the snow cover on the mountain before I set off. The house is in a cluster of small houses at the edge of a small field surrounded by mountains. At night you could hear the beautiful sound of water running through the ditch outside the house. The amazing postcard view of the small village in the morning as I continued with my journey was especially unforgettable.

Minshuku Mandokoro
Located in a very beautiful valley facing the Miura-toge, Mandokoro is a very old Japanese farmhouse run by a delightful couple and their dog 'Maku', who adds much of the comic relief. The accommodation is comfortable and homely, dinner and breakfast substantial and the the boxed lunch essential for the next day's climb.

Old house in the mountains
This place had the real feel of a rural farm house. There were rice fields recently filled with water and planted with rice. They were full of frogs, which made for a beautiful evening concert! A great stop for walkers on the Kohechi.

Insight to traditional Japan
The small and disintegrating rural settlement of Miura-guchi is an 8hr walk along the Kumano Kodo Kohechi trail which for us was from Omata and towards Totsukawa. There is nothing else in the settlement but this cosy little minshuku. It is like being invited into an old farmhouse. Although our host spoke no English, she explained the system and soon we’re soaking in her very hot bath enjoying wonderfully diverse local produce for dinner. Our room is large and very comfortable. This is a great stop for hikers on the pilgrim trail ? early dinner and early breakfast.

A true historical farmhouse
A 270 year-old farmhouse leaves you wondering about the stories the walls could tell if they could talk. Such a sweet hostess and her son, and the dog she calls her grandchild. No English signs but was still easy to find with the map provided. Bath run was too hot to get into and only room for one, but she'll throw a laundry on for you and put a heater by it so it's basically dry in the morning, that service more than makes up for the overly hot bath in my mind. Food is magnificent, lots of her own locally grown, made, gathered ingredients. Wish her well qualified son, would offer shiatsu massage services to the guest, but try as I might, he could not be persuaded, sadly taking his job change seriously. Think there could be a good business growth if they offered that service too. My recommendation: take the local specialty for lunch the next day, rather than the onigiri, which you can get everywhere. I forget what it's called, but it's delicious, rice wrapped in a pickled leaf of some kind.

Real rural Japan
This was the most "rustic" of the several guest houses we stayed in. The experience was very much like staying in someone's home, which is exactly what it is. The proprieter was extremely welcoming and helpful, and we had a good laugh together over the intractability of the language barrier (we speak zero Japanese). We arrived fairly early, after hiking from Omata, but there was no problem. We had a nice, hot bath, and the owner offered to wash our hiking clothes. Dinner and breakfast were served in a traditional-style dining area (sitting on the floor), and were very good & ample. The sleeping room was comfortable and clean. It was a little noisy at night - we went to bed early since there isn't much to do in Miura Guchi, but the owners stayed up watching TV and working in the kitchen. The walls in these traditional homes are extremely thin (literally paper). Ear plugs would help for those who aren't used to this. A good lunch box was provided for our hike, and the proprieter even slipped a nice note into the lunch - kind of like a note from Mom! (It took us some days before we were able to have it translated.) It is really wonderful to make these connections with people in a distant place - to be welcomed into their homes & to see how they live.
