Highlight during our trip - Michelin star quality food

We stayed with Naoko and Koji for one night while walking the Kumano Kodo. Directly after our booking, Naoko reached out to check our meal preferences. This was very thoughtful. And when arriving at the Tsugizakura-oji, Koji was ready to pick us up there. They gave us a very warm welcome and we loved to exchange ideas about nature, culture, art and other topics. We learned some interesting things from them and felt very much at home. The food Naoko prepared was just delicious and very much appreciated after a long hike. Koji took the time to discuss our next day's hike and had some great suggestions. They are very very special people who give their guests a very warm and comfortable stay at their lovely home. We hope to be back one day!

United States (solo traveler male)

the host Koji and his wife were nice hosts. Their house is a little off the track; I had to walk 2.2km to get their guesthouse after I walked out from Kumano trail; I did not ask them for pickup even if they offer this service. Their house has 2 guest rooms and 2 restrooms and 1 shared bathroom. It was very warm and comfortable place which like all Japanese homes, very functional and clean. They are such a lovely couple who speak a little English. Mr. Koji was very nice and friendly; he pentiendly explained to me the walking route for the next day. The couple worked together for cooking, and dined with me and the 2 other guests from china; all of us had a fantastic meal getting to know each other and learning a little of their lives. They provided delicate and delicious dinner and breakfast foods and also provided me with lunch box. My stay at their guesthouse was very happy and memorable.

We had great experience here. House hosts are warm, polite and considerate. We could find everything we need in the house: healthy and yummy hand-made meals, bath including clothes-drying system, coffee and tea, lunch box for next day's hiking.

Fantastic

Naoko and her husband Koji were wonderful hosts. Their house is a little off the track but they offer pick up service from the end of the hiking track so that was great. However, we chose to walk an extra 2 km to their house as we were early and that was an easy downhill/flat ~2km walk. Their house has 2 guest rooms and 2 WCs and 1 shared bathroom. It was very comfortable and like all Japanese bathrooms, very functional and clean. They are such a lovely couple who speak a little English and are very keen to engage with us and learn more. They dined with us and the 2 other guests and all 6 of us had a fantastic meal getting to know each other and learning a little of their lives. They are new at the hosting endeavour but I suspect they will do very well. Naoko cooked the most amazing food and provided us with 3 delicious meals. Our stay at their home was very memorable which we will cherish for a long time.

Friendly guest house with home made cooking

A wonderful host family offering home-made food (the woman appeared to have been cooking for a few hours), warm hospitality shown by making dryers available for wet shoes and clothes, cleaning up the bathrooms promptly where other guests left the floor area wet, and having coffee and hot water available at all times.

The hosts ate with us and so between us two, our three companions from Australia and our hosts we had a wonderful discussion about the hike, Japanese food and life in this part of rural Japan. Wonderful friendly hosts. Very glad we had the opportunity to stay here.

Lovely house in the mountains!

This stay was lovely. They picked me up at the last stop of the hike and drove me to their beautiful house with the best views! I had amazing plant based meals, including the lovely and fullfiling bento box. It was a very enjoyable dinner with them. My room was a big tatami room with a very comfy fouton. You can do your laundry here. I felt welcomed and comfortable here. I'm really grateful to have found this amazing house on the mountain.

Absolutely fabulos!

Amazing

We had a lovely time with Naoko-san and her husband. The guesthouse is beautifully arranged and the room is very spacious with a view to the forest. Also, there’s an elegant bench in the front, where you can sit and enjoy the view. The food was delicious and was warmly served. Moreover, her husband picked us up from a close point on the trail to the guesthouse. Highly recommended.

Lovely home stay with friendly hosts

This was probably our favourite stay along the Kumano Kodo trail as it meant we stayed in the house of our hosts and were able to chat together. The accommodation, especially the food, was excellent. We were picked up from the end of our first day’s walking and returned to the same spot the following day to resume our trek. Our hosts were very hospitable and friendly.

A wonderful stay!

I felt like Naoko and Koji had invited me into their home and treated me like a true guest. The room was lovely and comfortable, the meals were great, and they helped me with luggage transfer and bus information for the next few days. It was a highlight of my Japan trip.

Mori Nonaka is a stunning stop on the Kumano Kodo

I was a little hesitant because this guesthouse wasn't right on the trail. However, my expectations were exceeded by my amazing hosts Naoko and Koji. Both hosts were so incredibly warm, helpful, sweet. They made me the best meal I ate in Japan. And I loved sitting with them at dinner and chatting. The room I stayed in overlooked the rice fields and the misty mountains. It was very comfortable. This was my favorite spot on the Kumano Kodo and I would absolutely stay here again, and I would recommend others stay here as well. Disclaimer, they pick you up from the trail, and drop you off the next day. An amazing experience!

Amazing stay!

Fabulous stay!

Naoko and Koji were incredible hosts! They were very attentive to what I needed and made delicious dinner, breakfast and packed lunch. They were warm, friendly and easy to talk to. We had some great conversations (which I will always remember fondly) during my stay! Highly recommend!

A highlight of my Japan trip!

Staying at the Guesthouse run by Mr and Mrs Yashita was a wonderful experience. Mr Yashita picked me up promptly from Tsugizakura-oji and took me to their guesthouse, where they served me with afternoon tea and showed me around the place. My room was very spacious and clean, and had a breathtaking view of the mountains outside! Mrs Yashita prepared a delicious meal for us and we tried Japanese plum wine, and myself, another guest, Mr and Mrs Yashita stayed up for a few hours chatting about our lives. As a solo traveller interested in Japanese culture, I found it to be a really enjoyable experience. We were provided with a delicious breakfast, as well as lunch box to takeaway, the next morning, and were dropped back to Tsuigizakura to continue the hike. I'm very grateful to the Yashitas for their kind hospitality and could highly recommend staying with them 😊

Clean and comfortable room

After a long walk from Takijiri to Tsugizakura-Oji, I can totally take a rest at Mori Nanoka. The room is clean, food is yummy, Naoko-san is really a good chief. House owner is friendly, koji-san pick me up at Tsugizakura-Oji and drive to guesthouse Mori Nonaka. We have a great chat during the dinner time.

perfect stay

Kojisan and his wife were very welcoming hosts, and their good English facilitated pleasant conversation. The food served was excellent and felt very homely. The bathing facilities were great, with both shower and bath options available.

wonderful stay

Single female traveller, stayed in mid-May 2025. I had a wonderful stay with Naoko and Koji! Room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with very comfortable shower. Meals were delicious. Koji picked me up at Tsugizakura Oji, and after arrival at the guest house, walked me through different itinerary options for the next day and provided clear instructions on how to get to nearby bus stop (11 min walk from guesthouse to Nonako bus stop). Naoko and Koji were an absolute delight and I would highly recommend this guesthouse!

lovely host, great place and excellent food

It was a pleasure. The hosts are very kind and helpful. The room was neat and spacious. The food was a dream, lovingly and freshly prepared. I particularly enjoyed the vegetables with the soft tofu. The chicken was crispy and tender on the inside. Yummy... The dinner with the guests and hosts, also the conversation was very pleasant. We really enjoyed the time.

All was perfect.

Very welcoming owners, amazing people. The housewife is a fantastic cook. The tatami rooms are spacious, the futons are soft and comfortable. Thanks for discussing kimono, it's so nice to discuss culture with someone who is interested in the same things. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Excellent place to stay along the Kumano Kodo

My friend and I had such a good time at guesthouse Mori Nonaka. Naoko and Koji picked us up from the trail at Tsugizakura-oji and brought us to their home, which was super comfortable and cozy. They served us a delicious dinner (and ultimately breakfast and lunch) and ate with us and their other guests, giving us a chance to chat with them about their guesthouse and their experience with the Kumano Kodo. They were so kind and helpful! Would absolutely recommend staying here.

Guesthouse Mori Nonaka was an amazing experience! The hosts are extremely lovely people and will tend to all your needs, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food is a highlight, they serve fresh but amazing Japanese food which makes the trip even more special. I highly recommend staying - plus you get a head start leaving to Hongu.

Highlight of the Kumano trip!!!

This was one of my favorite memories of the Kumano hike. Koji and Naoko were wonderfully warm and welcoming hosts. We had our meals together and shared stories all night long. The location is beautiful and tranquil, and the rooms are all clean and very spacious. It's at the end of a long bypass road, but if you give them a call Koji will pick you up from the main road by Tsugizakura-Oji.

A Warm and Memorable Stay at Mori Nonaka

We had such a great stay at the Mori Nonaka Guesthouse. The hosts were so kind, friendly, and made us feel at home. All the meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and the beds were very comfortable too. The guesthouse is in a beautiful location—so peaceful and scenic. Nothing was too much trouble, including collecting us by car from Tzugizakura Shrine which was much appreciated after a very hard first day. The food was absolutely delicious and clearly prepared with love. An authentic Japanese experience!

Great stay on the Kumano Kodo

We stayed here for one night. The location was perfect for our needs on the trail, and it's in a beautiful location with lovely scenery. The Guesthouse itself is nice - big rooms and a nice shared bath area. The food was a definite highlight, and the packed lunch portions were generous. Overall highly recommend!!

Warm Hosts & Delicious Meals

A perfect retreat! The hosts picked us up despite the location a little far from Kumano-Kodo. Nice facilities and exclusive privacy (only one group daily). Naoko-san’s meals were very good, and chatting with Koji-san and Naoko-san added interest. Superb hospitality, total relaxation. A must-stay!
