Basic hotel. Everything was fine. I was a bit concerned about my luggage pickup as I had never used a luggage delivery service before. The front desk clerk just told me to leave it at the hotel. He gave me a piece of paper to write my name on and stuck it on my suitcase.

Very Helpful!
We arrived to Tanabe a little early, and we simply hoped to store our luggage at the hotel and go do some final preparations around town. Our room was ready, so they allowed us to check in early. They also allowed us to pick up lunch box early the next morning, since we wanted to catch the 6:15am bus. Unfortunately we missed breakfast, but they worked with us wherever they were able to, and we really appreciated it!

Perfectly clean and serviceable business hotel
Hotel Hanaya is a classic "business hotel". The hotel and rooms are clean but no frills. The bedroom and bathroom are quite small (as is typical for a business hotel) and not places where you'd want to spend much time. It was a fine way to start my trip.

Great Location

Convenient and accommodating
Perfect for my first night stay in Tanabe before starting Kumano Kodo Nakahechi walk, the hotel is conveniently located close to train station and Kumano Kodo information center. The room was very confortable and they were very accommodating with my breakfast time, they agreed to serve half an hour earlier thank their normal scheduled time so that I could catch an earlier bus to the start of the trail, as it was advised by the Kumano Kodo information center. Additionally, the breakfast and lunch box were absolutely delicious!

I'm just grateful to have a room
The hotel is far from the station and not very close to the beach, but the nearby food is good.When I did not understand a word of the owner's wife, she acted a little cold.The hardware condition of the room is better than expected, the bed is a little small, the mattress is a little hard.

We paid 13'200 JPY for a one-night stay at this hotel. This is much too expensive + there are hotels that are better located in town. They are not able to prepare lunch boxes before 7am, not acceptable for pilgrims.

Great just for lodging
If you simply need a place at a reasonably convenient location, Hotel Hanaya would be a good option. It has everything you need at a very basic level, however I found the rates a little bit expensive for the quality we are given. Some areas of improvement: - Food was rather disappointing, given the general standard of food in Japan. - Walls are very thin, so loud talking and door-shutting in the hallway can be heard very clearly and disrupt sleep. - It's in a good location, quite near the train station, but the walking route there is difficult; because the ground is very uneven and wears out your luggage wheels fast + there's no walking path so we were basically walking on the road and trying to be careful not to get hit by traffic all the way.

Great Tanabe Overnighter
This hotel is fine for as an overnight stop if you are say setting off for the Kumando Kodo trip the next day. Breakfast was good and the decor unusual. Staff friendly and helpful. Make sure you have a wheelable suitcase.

Good stay
The food served by Hotel Hanaya was excellent. We had a Japanese style breakfast which included a variety of items, which were both delicious and filling. The lunch box for the hike was also elegantly packed with rice balls, assorted veggies and meat.

Excellent service. Great hotel.
The location of this hotel is great - just a couple of minutes walk from Kii-Tanabe train station, with some great pubs and restaurants close by. The rooms were perfectly adequate for a late check-in and just the one night's stay and the meals were lovely. What was especially appreciated was the hotel agreeing to store our luggage (for free) until we returned to Tanabe a couple of days later.

Hotel Hanaya is just a few minutes walk from Kii-Tanabe station (make sure to spell it Kiitanabe on Hyperdia, otherwise you'll get Tanabe in Osaka). The room was quite spacious for a hotel and clean. The owner is very friendly. She speaks virtually no english, but communication by gestures works fine too (checkout works by simply placing the key on the reception counter on the 2nd floor, took us a while to figure that one out). Breakfast comes in two flavours to choose from, "japanese" and "western". Both were plentyful and very tasty.

Good food, poor sleep

Good starting point for the Nakaechi route
Very convenient location in order to reach Takijiri-oji and the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Center. The hotel is five minutes by walk from the JR and bus stations, in the middle of an area full of interesting restaurants. The room was essential, very clean and more spacious than the Japanese standard. Well-working the Wi-Fi.

Adaquate
It seemed like a luxury hotel after experiencing the mats on the floor. Private bath on suite although it was spvery small. Hostess allowed us to stay over two extra nights due to typhoon.

Pre Walk
Hotel is just down road from station. Looks a little tired when entering. Up 1 flight of stairs to reception and easy check in prior to 3pm. Limited english but easy to understand what we needed. They were able to get luggage moved to end of walk hotel easily. Hall ways need a lick of paint but rooms very clean, beds good and bathrooms clean. TV and hair dryer and aircon and windows! Breakfast down stairs in the weird USA room with Kennedy poster and a little trump om the billiard table. Breakfast good and lunch box for walk exceptional. Stay here to get organised prior to walk in good clean hotel

Overall good experience
I found that it's not always easy to find things even with a map given by tourist info at train station. Map doesn't have street names. But once we found the hotel, we had a nice clean room. Small compared to North American standards but not to what we've seen in Japan. Breakfast was quite good- both the western and traditional Japanese options. Menu to go was nice as well in a bento type box that I decided to keep as a souvenir. I didn't find many good dinner options in the town. Tourism info was helpful. It wasn't easy to get us info prior to arrival. If we did have the info we would have planned to arrive earlier and not miss the opportunity to do the half day trail the same day.

A good option if you stay a night at Tanabe before starting Kumano Kodo hiking
Hanaya was a good choice for spending this night at Tanabe which we had not really planned. Near the station and Kumano Travel office. Everything correct at a very reasonable price - and we found a very good restaurant for dinner, in the same street as the hotel.

This was a basic, inexpensive room that was clean and met our needs. The beds were firm but comfortable. It was a little further from the train station than planned. We really needed the address, it would have been helpful. The couple that runs the hotel is friendly, don't speak much English, but that is fine. The Western style breakfast for 700 yen is very good.

The only problem was that the reception did not tell us that our luggage pick up was meant to be done at the hotel (while our receipt said the Tanabe station without any time...) We ended up going and waiting 30 minutes at the station... When we came back the not so english speaking lady told us that the luggage was meant to be pick up at the hotel...

Great place for people overnighting before the walk. Easy to find from the station and plenty of restaurants nearby. The bus to the trailhead leaves from the station so good for early start the next day. Rooms are simple and clean. Beds comfortable. Bathroom small but ok Corridors outside need to be updated.

Reception & service
The lady at the reception was very helpful. She gave us recommendation for dinner where we really enjoyed the meal. It was pouring raining in the morning when we had to leave. She took us to the station by her car with all our luggage. Thank you.

Nice one night stay
I arrived late and the lady was still very welcoming, she understood some English so be simple about it. The breakfast was really good. My only issue was I found a cockroach lurking in my room, I killed it. My room besides that was spotless so I was very surprised!!

Very good location
The hotel is in a very good location, close to the train and bus station. The room was comfortable to stay, we had everything we needed. The people at the reception were very nice and helpful. The only thing that we did not like was that we had to keep the air conditioner turned on all the time and we could not open the window to let some fresh air in. Apart from that, everything else was ok.

Simple but good hotel
Breakfast was very good and perfect to start a long day of hike. The employees at the reception were very nice. The room was a just a little bit small and we would have preferred to have one double bed instead of twin beds, but still, the room and bathroom were clean and beds were comfortable. The hotel was well situated.

Very kind receptionist
I arrived late the evening before my walk started and had to leave the next morning at 6.30am to start the Kumano Kodo walk. The kind lady at reeption told me breakfast and lunch boxes only started at 7am so I would miss both. However she, incredibly kindly, said she would pen the kitchen early and have my lunch box ready for me when I left at 6.30am. So Kind!

First night in Kumano Area
I travelled in a group (four Japanese, one Australian, one New Zealander) to Wakayama. It was everyone's first time to visit Tanabe-Kumano Area. The hotel was close to the station (five minute walk). I can read Japanese, so I found the hotel from the distance (with the Japanese sign) but the English signage was not so clear. The "pub/cafe" sign was easy to see. The owner did not seem so friendly at first, but after talking with her for some time, she gave us a lot of good information and was kind to us. The hotel is a little old, but the rooms are very clean. There is also separate shampoo, conditioner and body soap, which is something you do not find in a business hotel always. The breakfast was very good - I enjoyed the Western-style meal, while others enjoyed the Japanese meal. The restaurant (first floor) has many unique items on display from America. The highlight of our stay was when she gave us a bag of MIKAN (Wakayama oranges). I would recommend this hotel to other travellers.

Handy location
Easy level walk from station and the bus stop for Takijiri. Family run hotel with a comfortable clean room. Reception on 3rd floor. Excellent breakfast in an entertaining cafe on 1st floor. This cafe is full of original memorabilia from the United States.

Convenient hotel for beginning Kumano Kodo trek
I stayed here the night before beginning the trek. The hotel was easy to find on foot from the train station and although the corridor smelt a little, the room itself did not smell of smoke and it was large, clean and comfortable. The breakfast and packed lunch provided were both decent and it was helpful that it was arranged in advance that I could leave my case here during the trek and collect it on my return.

Great Bento
The hotel was near Tanabe station making it an easy stop before heading out on the Kumano Kodo. Ate dinner at Ichiyoshi a few minutes away. Very good Japanese restaurant. The hotel was a bit dated, but the rooms were clean. Best of all was the bento lunch! I was pleasantly surprised!
