館内から直接川湯温泉をお楽しみただける宿

川湯温泉を流れる清流大塔川はとても美しい川です。
河原を掘れば温泉が湧き出す珍しい温泉地で、冬場は河原に作った仙人風呂が大変賑わいます。

目前を流れる大塔川には、当館専用の川原の露天風呂を造成しております。内湯から「湯あみ」という浴衣を着て、川原に降りれば、自然の風感じ、空に輝く星を眺め、川のせせらぎを聞きながらの露天風呂は、当館だけの楽しみです。

ほのかに木の香がただよう客室で、のんびりとお過ごしください。

Kawayu Midoriya

Our rooms were Japanese style rooms that overlooked the river. Very nice. The buffet was very good and had a good choice of western and local dishes. The drink choices were excellent and staff was great. Treated us very well. The free shuttle service was an added bonus.

Enjoyable stay

The hotel was kind enough to offer us lift from /to Hongutaisha, which saved us a lot of waiting time. The room was spacious and clean. Both the dinner and breakfast were fine with a good selection of food items. The public bath, however, was less satisfactory, with only 2 hot baths and no cold one avaiable. Needless to say, there was no sauna. Overall, a nice hotel near the river which offers an ideal place for rest.

We enjoyed our stay at the Kawayu Midoriya. The private onsen was a welcome addition after days of hiking. The location is remote and very little else there.

Excellent experience at Kawayu Midoriya

This review is based on Kawayu Midoriya very kindly upgrading us to a large, deluxe Japanese room. We'd originally been in the most basic room, which was on the first floor. However, when someone moved in above us the lighting fixture in the ceiling kept rattling. They moved us upstairs, to a huge gorgeous room overlooking the main street. I'm not sure if we would have had as wonderful an experience had we stayed in the room on the lower floor. The service itself was impeccable. We had a young college grad with excellent English skills bring us our meals. He was very kind and open to communicating with us. The baths/onsen themselves were among the best I've ever experienced...very authentic, mineral rich, quiet. Truly an exquisite experience.

Great location and onsen experience

Reception was friendly and spoke excellent English, which made check-in easy and welcoming. While the room was a little dated, it was clean and comfortable, and the location couldn’t have been better. We especially loved the riverside onsen, provided by the hotel, it was awesome! My teens had me join them in digging out our own little onsen on the riverbank a little way downriver as well, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our stay. We had a lot of laughs adjusting the temperature to get it just right in our DIY hot spring. The buffet meals offered plenty of variety and were very generous. We tried the hot pot option—just make sure to cook the meat thoroughly. A great stay overall with fun memories we’ll definitely treasure!

Our favourite stay

This was our favourite place we stayed along the Kumano Kodo. The baths were excellent, great service at the front desk, and the rooms were beautiful with a great view of the river flowing behind the hotel. We would love to stay here again sometime!

Beautiful onsen, mass market process

We stayed here while on Kumano Kodo because of the gorgeous outdoor onsen, right in the river. And this was truly an unforgettable experience. Also the 'Japanese room' we booked turned out to be a huge top floor corner suite with stunning views to the river. The only thing that was missing from accommodation of this quality was a coffee machine. You could buy coffee at the reception, but the quality was not great and it wasn't always available. Too bad that the food was a buffet format where we as vegetarians found very little to eat. Also breakfast buffet was mostly dinner food, very limited actual breakfast options. During hiking days you would want to head out properly and healthily fueled, but this is not the place to cater for western appetites. And coffee from the machine left a lot to hope for. The reception staff was wonderful. They organized a shuttle to pick us up and whisk us back to the trail head as well as for a visit to Yonomine.

Very nice hotel

Amazing onsen next to the river - that's what we were here for. The buffet was a little chaotic, but the food choices and quality were great. The room was clean, had a fantastic view, and we slept well.

Three nights stay

They gave us a corner room which was huge. Good housekeeping daily and they have both indoor and outdoor onsen. Loved the outdoor onsen, please spend some time in it as it has a good view of nature. As we stayed 3 nights, we had3 breakfast and 3 supper. They were served in buffets and menu on each day were similar. It would be good to have more variation.

An excellent night on the trail after a long day's walk

If you start in Tanabe and make this your second night of the trip, this will be your longest day hiking (25km). This was a wonderful place to stay after a long (and rainy, for me) day on the trail. Excellent sento/onsen, and a very nice buffet dinner. Good service, and the receptionists spoke English very well. NB: If you call them and you miss the bus (or arrive too early for it), they will pick you up from Hongu Taisha at the end of the day.

Beautiful location

The rooms are large and look out to the river. The outdoor onsen was a great experience. It was a hotel frequented by locals and it was treat to share the experience. We were very fortunate to be there over a long week and we treated to a cultural drum and dance performance.

川湯温泉のバス停のすぐそばで、川に入ったり、露天風呂に浸かったりと温泉が楽しめました。湯浴み用の服も置いてあって、そのあたりの気遣いも良かったです。夕食は気軽な感じのバイキングなんですが、なんと炭火焼きの鮎が食べ放題。おいしかったです。部屋からの景色もまた雄大でゆっくりできました。

The hotel looks very old and they seem to cover this up with a green tea smell everywhere which makes you feel like your in an elderly home. The size of the room and the view was amazing. The futons were to thin for us so we did not sleep well.

This was fantastic and the meals were excellent and an amazing taste experience. The rooms were comfortable and reception was fantastic. The pick up service from Hongu to the hotel after a long day was great. The outdoor onsen use followed by a swim in the river just completed the day. FANTASTIC

部屋が湿っぽく、雨で濡れたウエアー等が乾かなく、とても居心地が悪かった。又、部屋に行くまでに靴を脱いで、裸足にならなくてはならず、気持ちが悪かった。結構な料金を取っているのに、がっかりした。食堂も寒く、早く帰りたかった。折角、熊野古道を歩いた体を休めたかったのに余計に疲れました。翌日は早々にバスで新宮に行きました。二度と泊まりません。

Kawayu Modoriya impresses

Kawayu Midoriya is a beautiful hotel, with very friendly staff who made us all feel welcome. The Japanese rooms are huge and the floor to ceiling windows allow for a spectacular view over the river. The rooms have a wonderful bath that is deeper than any I have ever seen, and lounge chairs that allow for a relaxing evening. There is a large indoor onsen, but also two communal outdoor onsens just next to the river that can be enjoyed all day and even under the stars. The vast selection of food for breakfast and dinner was a highlight, and probably the best I have had in Japan.

Luxury on the Kumano Kodo

A ryokan with an unmatchable view of the awesome river and mountains of Wakayama. An excellent midpoint rest stop for folks on the Kumano Kodo. It has its own hot spring sources indoor and outdoor baths by the river, karaoke rooms, it's own souvenir and sundries shop. Daily free shuttle services to major sights in Hongu are available so that beats having to wait for public busses. Meals can feel a bit rushed as it offers a semi buffet services and you may have to jostle with large tour group guests at meal time! Would I return? Oh yes!

Fantastic hotel, great location with very attentive, friendly staff

We loved our stay at Kawayu Midoriya and despite it being a bigger hotel, it was probably our favourite place to stay. Amazing onsen experience, warm, friendly staff (English speaking too!) confortable, clean rooms, shuttle bus, tasty lunch.

Amazing view and nice river onsen.

The view is amazing, and the rooms are very clean and beautiful. I stayed in a Japanese room but the hotel was overall more resort-style. The dinner was delicious and served in a big buffet - which makes it very practical especially if you are traveling with kids. I enjoyed a lot my stay at Kawayu Midoriya!

Great option. Ignore the exterior of the building

This is an older building with an unattractive exterior. Once you enter, it is clean, welcoming, offers the most amazing outdoors onsen I have ever seen, right by the river, and a great dinner buffet.

サービス満点！

早くホテルに入る連絡をしたら、熊野本宮大社まで迎えに来てくださったのは、とても嬉しかったです。朝も、請川まで送っていただき、ありがとうございました。川沿いの露天風呂は最高で、浴衣も清潔で着心地が良く、とてもよかったです。ただ、昼過ぎの内風呂は、外から見えそうで、安心して入れませんでした。朝ごはんはとっても美味しかったです。夕食が、茶碗蒸しと鮎の塩焼きは美味しかったのですが、その他の物がちょっと…。バイキングだったのは、自分の好きなだけ食べられるので良かったです。

Extremely outdated hotel that desperately needs an upgrade (both in staff and rooms)

We were greated friendly upon arrival. The staff at the check-in was not particularly friendly (but also not unfriendly). The room itself was outdated and dirty. Spider webs were visible at multiple places, the airco couldn't cool (only heat) and the staff wasn't very friendly. I wouldn't recommend this accomodation to anyone.

Beautiful stay

川湯みどりやを探しました

熊野古道トレッキング

初めて熊野古道トレッキングをしました。滝尻王子～継桜を経て熊野本宮。その後小雲取越え、大雲取越えを経て那智大社。川湯温泉はちょどその途中にあり休憩するには最適な場所でした。二泊し、熊野本宮訪問等意義ある滞在でした。また継桜からの徒歩に疲れ切ったので途中発心門王子でバスに乗ることにしましたが5分遅れで乗り遅れたのでみどりやに電話した処ご親切に車で迎えに来て頂き大変助かりました。

La habitacion que nos toco era perfecta, muy espaciosa y en la ultima planta con vistas a los banos. Sin duda los banos son su punto fuerte por el hecho de poder estar al lado del rio.

熊野古道中辺路の旅

少し早い夏休みをとり、夫婦で、初めて熊野古道中辺路をウォーキングすることにしました。結構過酷なウォーキングだと聞いていたので不安でいっぱいでしたが、川湯みどりやさんに宿泊させていただき、ゆっくり温泉につかり、美味しいお料理を頂き、熊野古道中辺路のウォーキングを終えることができました。大変お世話になり、ありがとうございました。また、バスの時間の都合で、大斎原を見逃してしまい、宿の方に相談したところ、朝早くに大斎原まで送っていただけることになり、悔いなく旅を終えることができました。心より感謝申し上げます。

Large hotel from another age

Although it is large, Kawayu Midoriya is run in a way that makes it feel intimate. The service is simply great. The decor and style of the place is very 1970s/80s which is fun. Access to the riverside springs at Kawayu Onsen is unsurpassed. The food, while not great, comes via a large Japanese buffet, which is interesting for those who are new to Japanese food in Japan. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend passing a few days here.

Fancier than I expected!

Our room was like a suite, with 6 rooms on the top floor, so much space (especially compared to the hotels we stayed in in Kyoto and Osaka) and very clean. We were so graciously attended to, even my 5yo daughter was outfitted with a properly-sized yukata. The baths are lovely, open-air by the river, though I preferred being directly in the river at the sennin site. The food is buffet style and felt a bit like a cafeteria meal. Staff are super-attentive and helpful.

食事が残念

ハーフバイキングでの夕食でしたが、バイキングのメニューには素朴なものが多すぎて、あれもこれも食べたいと思いませんでした。家にいるときと変わらないので、旅行に来ているのに…と満足できませんでした。お風呂は、露天風呂が川のすぐそばでゆったり気分良く過ごせました。しかし、湯着はお湯に入るとふわふわめくれて、心もとなく、冬場なこともあって、お湯から上がると湯着が非常に冷たく感じました。
