Surprisingly modern hotel despite old looking facade
We enjoyed the renovated lobby especially the free flow of alcohol (beer and sake) and snacks. The dinner was superb and great variety of food. Easily the best meal of the trip

Everything here is a truly wonderful experience. The amenities, the breakfast and dinner buffets, stunning forest and riverside location. A soulful experience.

Excellent Hotel
Great hotel with friendly staff who were very helpful. The buffet meals were excellent and the free drinks in the afternoon were a nice surprise. We enjoyed use of the indoor and outdoor onsens.

Nice onsen hotel
This ryokan had both indoor and outdoor onsen — such a treat. The room was clean and way more spacious than I expected. We stayed two nights, and here's the detail I loved: they served a different main dish each evening. Such a thoughtful touch. After hiking for days straight, it was the perfect spot to just unwind and do absolutely nothing.

Comfortable
We stayed here after 2 days hiking the Kumano Kodo and found the hotel to be clean, comfortable, and oriented towards families. Our rooms were very nice and the air conditioning was welcome on a warm day. The onsen facilities were adequate and each of the 4 of our party found the inside onsen too hot to use. The riverbank onsen was very nice to relax in. Unfortunately the river was too shallow to swim in. The dinner and breakfast buffets were extensive with many choices, however no dishes stood out as excellent. Beer, wine, and sake was available with dinner. The staff at Kawayu Midoriya were very attentive and worked hard to make our stay comfortable. We found it easy to take a bus from the Kumano Hongu Taisha to Kawayu Midoriya and the next day to Ukegawa to restart our Kumano Kodo trek.
