地元の季節の食材で作った郷土料理や国際色豊かな創作料理が自慢で、使用する食材からワインやコーヒーまでオーガニックにこだわり、ここでの食の体験は心と体を元気にしてくれます。
渡瀬温泉から温泉のお湯を運びお風呂を用意しています。ウッドボイラーで焚いて温めなおす為、お湯がまるくなり肌当たりの良いお湯を楽しんでいただけます。

Kiri-no-sato organic lodge has been our favourite accommodation in Japan
So good. This hotel is as cosy as a hobbit hole! The hosts are lovely (and funny), the tatami mat room was heaps of fun for the 7 of us, the kaiseki meals served in the eccentrically decorated dining room were intricate and delicious!

Perfection
Family guesthouse with a fine dining concept dinner and breakfast. It is a place that you would want to stay another day. Books, wooden interior, terrace, the room view, fireplace, massage chair, live guitar performance from the owner, private onsen. It was a lot more than i expected. The places is next to Kumano Kodo path. Room is spacious and beautiful Japanese design. If i would do the same hike again, i would certainly stay at the same place.

Perfect stay for our first night of the Kumano!
This place really set the tone for the start of our hike. We were so warmly welcome despite us arriving a little early. The hosts were all incredibly kind and warm. My boyfriend likes to make Umeshu and the host kindly shared his perfect recipe as we loved his Umeshu. The food was 10/10. The service was wonderful. Can’t recommend enough.

Fantastic!
Excellent! Lovely welcome at the end of a steep and rainy hike into a charming and cosy space. The owner and team were SO warm and charming, and the food was outstanding. Great onsen, incredible views. Lovely feel and soul to the place. Strongly recommend!

Amazing Views & Host
This was by far our most amazing views of our entire hike. Takhara is a gorgeous spot and this location is unbeatable looking down on the value below. The host was amazing and the food was also amazing. I know this is on the more expensive side and might not be the best value but it really is an incredible location and we loved our time here.

Class of its own
All our lodging offered spectacular views and friendly staff, but Kiri-no-Sato organic lodge stands out as the most beautiful and most friendly. The room had a small deck overlooking an expansive mountain vista and the people and lounge added to the perfection.

The host is very friendly and takes good care of his guests. He gives them attention and chats with everyone. They serve a good dinner. The balcony of the restaurant has a good view of the lovely sunset. Our room has a deck that looks out to the mountains below. Amazing view in the early morning when clouds are settled in the valley below.

Awesome!
Our stay at Kirinosato Takahara was truly special. The location is absolutely stunning, perched above the clouds with sweeping views of the mountains. The hosts were exceptional—warm, thoughtful, and attentive. I had requested pescatarian meals in advance and was so grateful they were able to accommodate with beautifully prepared dishes. The food was absolutely delicious and a real highlight of our stay. The onsen was great, with large windows looking out over the landscape. It was the perfect way to relax after walking part of the Kumano Kodo. Sleeping on traditional Japanese futons was a different experience for us (our bodies are used to soft Western beds!), but we were glad to have that authentic element as part of our journey. It added to the charm and sense of stepping into something uniquely Japanese. Highly recommend!

Great place

The best place to stay on the KK!
We loved everything about our stay at this family-run lodge. The hosts are kind and friendly, the food is exceptional, the onsen is gorgeous, the views are stunning. The common space has a wonderful feel about it - so warm and relaxing. It was the most expensive accommodation we had in Japan but worth every yen!

Best hotel in the town
The owner is super friendly and we had wonderful chat. The dinner and breakfast are very delicious and we had the best sake experience here. Room is clean and big. Shower room is also very comfortable. Will certainly visit this hotel again.

First day on Kumano Kodo
The climb from Takajiri at the start to Takahara is very strenuous. The difficulty rating given is unrealistic. It is more of a 3.5 to 4 out of 5. It was a pleasure finally getting to the lodge and checking in. The reception was very helpful with the small issues encountered. The onsen was great especially after the strenuous climb, Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Dinner a fusion of Japanese and Spanish ( Paella). Breakfast same. Shakshuka was a treat. Highly recommend Kiri-no-Sato

Wonderful stay at Kiri-no-sato Takahara!
After a long and grueling hike from Takijiri-Oji to Takahara, arriving at Kiri-no-sato was like arriving at the world's best resort. Everything about it was fantastic - from the location, to the rooms, meals and host - we thoroughly enjoyed it all!

You should stay here!
The facilities are fantastic, staff is super friendly (family business), the food is amazing, and the view was breathtaking. I recommend checking in early so you can enjoy a nice chilled time in the bath, enjoy the food, and the view. Get up early to enjoy the morning mist!

Exceptional Hospitality
Our stay at Kiri-no-Sato was exceptional. After an unexpected incident left me unable to carry my backpack, the staff went above and beyond to arrange its transport to the next stay of our journey—an incredible relief. Their kindness and attentiveness made a challenging moment so much easier. The hospitality was warm and genuine, and the meals were absolutely spectacular—beautifully prepared and delicious. Once in a lifetime!
My wife and I had the fortune to eat and stay here. My wife said it was the best and her favorite dinner of her life. My wife is a passionate and skilled cook. Chanced upon 4-part YouTube video series on the Kumano Kodo years and years ago, and „walk the Kumano Kodo“ had been on my bucket list for the longest time, but had just not taken the plunge until COVID hit. Finally did the walk the first instance Japan reopened for visitors, and the minute the trail opened up and I saw the Hatenashi Mountains spread out in front of me at the village of Takahara, I was mesmerised, had difficulties leaving, and now just can‘t seem to stop going back…. The Lodge has all rooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows, facing the mountains and the view is simply awesome. The owner and his team were unfailingly hospitable and friendly, the meals were excellent, and ushering in a new year in the peaceful village had been magical

Loved everything about this hotel
Highly recommend this hotel! It was kischy, fun, and had a great trekker's hotel vibe. Owner was fun, food was organic and also very tasty. Enjoyed soaking in the big bath after a long trek. Wooden stove, good coffee, English-speaking. Thank you for the fun conversation! I hope to visit again.

Kiri-no-sato Takahara Lodge
Our stay at the Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge was one of the highlights of our Kumano Kodo experience. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and passionate about creating an exceptional guest experience. The food, inclduing breakfast, lunch, dinner and the lunch box, was exceptionally good. The food choices were creative, delicious and beautifully presented. The property is unique and situated so beautifully to capture views of the surrounding mountains. The onsen baths were fantastic also.

Beautiful views
The rooms are big, comfortable and I love sleeping on the tatami floor. I slept very well. The toilet is en suite so you don't have to go out of the room, although the showers and bath are separate. The views from the lodge is amazing and you really are above the clouds. The meals are wonderful and a mixture of Japanese and Western. We enjoyed our stay here very much!

Fantastic Experience
We stayed here the first night of our multi-day hike and it was an exceptional time, the view and facilities are outstanding and the traditional cuisine was some of the most delicious food I've ever had. I wish I could take their chef home with me, he was amazing! Everybody was lovely and very friendly. Highly recommend.

Highly recommended!!! Can I give more stars? The hotel has its own onsen, very clean and accommodating staff. Additional service from the owner who had lots of positive energy and talked to each guest during dinner and breakfast. Night time view from the hotel is very beautiful almost cinematic.

An unforgettable experience.
I arrived at lunch time and decided to have lunch there. Everything was cooked to perfection and the freshly prepared salads were particularly delicious. I was shown to my room around 3pm and was astounded by the beautiful tatami room and stunning views. Dinner was a real treat with dish after dish of exquisitely presented tasty food. The flavours were incredible and the hosts enthusiasm helped all the guests to bond as he performed songs on his guitar.

I could have stayed at Kiri-no-Sato forever
What a perfect place to stay for your first night on the trail. Takahara is a stunning town and Kiri-no-Sato is the perfect place to take it in, with amazing views from the guestrooms and the bath. The owner and staff are very kind and warm, stopping to talk with guests, play guitar, and create a really home-y feeling. I would love to come back.

Excellent accommodation
This was my favourite place on the trek. It was ice to have a drink at the end of the day and meet other travellers. The food was great and the Onsen facilities were great. The room I had was very clean and comfortable.

Good views, good food and a great atmosphere.
I had a really good time at Kiri-no-Sato! Probably the best place I stayed at along the hike. My room had a great view over the misty valley. All the staff spoke english very well. The dinner was exceptional! The host is such a great person and seems to really care about the guests. He interacted with every guest during dinner, creating a very relaxed and fun atmosphere!

This place was so fabulous. It was our first onsen experience and we loved it. The view overlooking the mountains was divine and we enjoyed a couple of glasses of their home brewed plum wine. The owner even entertained us with a musical performance. The food was fabulous. We just loved loved this place

One of our favorite hotels in Japan
This onsen was cozy, welcoming, and fabulous. The onsen was clean and overlooking the mountains. The owners were very kind and the meals were delicious. I'd recommend this spot to everyone. If we make the journey back to Japan, we will definitely come back here.

Fun place to be
The lively atmosphere at Kirinosato Takahara is partly attributed to the (unusually) gregarious and friendly host, who spent some time in Spain, as reflected by some of the design elements in the ryokan. Wish it wasn’t raining as the patio and outdoors stove was quite inviting.

Spectacular
This is my second stay at Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge and I am still bowled over by it. The views from the village and the lodge were stunning, the room and baths comfortable and restorative, the food beautiful and delicious, and very importantly for me personally, everything was squeaky clean. beautiful space and delicious food!
this was my favorite place to stay on the Nakahechi trek. The building itself is unique and thoughtfully decorated and feels really homey and cozy, yet spacious. The owner and employees are friendly and helpful, and the food they serve for dinner is delicious. We were served a mix of Japanese cuisine and some western-style tapas. The room I had was beautiful and had an incredible view of the valley below, with a little outdoor seating area. There's also a shared ladies' onsen, but since I arrived early, I was able to use it on my own.

Exceptional food and location
The location has perfect hill views for sunset. Make sure you wake up by 7am to see the clouds covering the mountains. The hosts were so friendly, and made me feel comfortable. The food was generous and memorable! Make sure you also try the home made plum wine! Overall, such a great experience, 5 star rating!

WONDERFUL PLACE!
We had such a lovely time here. It was the first night of our Kumano Kodo trek and without question our best night. The owner and his family spoiled us BIG TIME! Dinner was delicious! Over-fed us. Breakfast was yummy. All the rooms had a lovely view of the mountain. Sunset was beautiful. This place kinda spoiled it for us. None of the following accommodations compared. We came early so we had the onsen all to ourselves. Just be aware there are no private onsens and I don’t believe there are any private showers. So if that’s super important to you, this may not be the place. It was the best overall stay for us. Owner even serenaded us with his guitar. Great player!

A fantastic, special stay
Was welcomed in with a cup of yuzu tea, a hot bath, and a room with a beautiful view of the valley below. Breakfast and dinner were fantastic, and just top notch hospitality all around from Jan-san. Highly recommend.

Very nice Ryokan style hotel with excellent service
We really enjoyed this ryokan. It had a great view over the valley, super friendly owners, excellent local food, an Onsen, and comfortable tatami room. They also provided a bento 🍱 box on request.

Got spoiled from it
It is a very nice hotel with a lovely host. We enjoyed a lot. The view to the valley is outstanding specially when the clouds are low. It set the bar very high for the rest of the trip. The supper and breakfast were very well cooked and the lunch box was simple but delicious. It mixes the traditional Japanese with food from the world. Very interesting. I recommend the plum wine!

Fantastic stay
Kiri-no-Sato has a great location and a warm friendly English-speaking host who went above and beyond to help return my left-behind jacket. The view of morning mist over the valley is spectacular if you are lucky enough to catch it.

Spacious room with amazing view
Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge is such a perfect first night of our hike. The view from our room is breathtaking. We really needed to soak our body in the bath after a long hiking day. wonderful hotel with a stunning view
The hotel was wonderful, everything about it was a pleasure, the host has such charisma he made you feel instantly welcome. The view from the onsen and the bedrooms was just gorgeous right across the valley to the hills. I am vegan and they tried to accommodate my needs as much as possible as the hotel is quite remote. I would recommend this place to anyone and I would definitely stay there again.

Organically amazing
As soon as you walk in you can tell that this place is special. The hospitality of everyone was beyond approach, the food was delicious, the rooms had a spacious Japanese feel, and the food was excellent. All the staff had their own personality which only added to the excellency of the accommodation. You must try and book your reservation here.

A night like no other!

Perfect!
This is a lovely guesthouse. The staff were simply amazing, friendly, warm and interested in my comfort. The guesthouse is eclectic, homey feeling and service oriented. The meals were fantastic. Very nice onsen bath after a tough hike! When I arrived, I looked for a restaurant for lunch but not a/v at all. And at the dinner, the host gave me one more dish as I did not have lunch. Our first lodge along the Nakahechi hiking route turned out to be a truly splendid experience. The amazing host, Jian, left an indelible mark on our night with his warm personal touch. Simply the best
This accommodation was our favorite one! Absolutely everything was perfect, from the onsen and the room that have an incredible view on the mountains that I will cherish forever, to the meals that were out of this world and the owner who was so welcoming and interesting! It really was the highlight of our trip. Other points: - We took the vegetarian option and the meal was absolutely incredible - They had no problems with tattoos in the onsen when we were there, which was a relief for us - Worth repeating : A-MA-ZING VIEW. Just...completely stunning. If you happen to be awake around 4-5am, don't forget to look out the window to see the mountains covered in mist. It's magical.

Felt like I was in a dream...
I loved my stay at Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge. It has a beautiful location overlooking the mountains and the service was perfect from the start. The staff were friendly and full of personality. Perfect stay after a long walk
When we arrived at Kiri no Sato we were welcomed by an amazing view of sunset over the surrounding mountains. The friendly staff showed us to our spacious traditional Japanese style room, which had the same amazing view. Food was amazing!

Kiri-no-sato takahara lodge
We received a warm welcome into a homely reception area. we were shown to our Japanese style guest room. The room had a private toilet and basin. We had to make up our own bed with the futon and sheets provided. Our room had a narrow balcony and two deck chairs with stunning private views over the valley. The onsen was spacious and well appointed with inside and outside facilities. There was an outside terrace and balcony for guests to use as well. Dinner was in the reception area and of the highest quality with ample servings. Our host was very friendly and engaging, and serenaded us with his guitar. Breakfast was in the same space and again was delicious. We also received a bento box for lunch which included a banana. We liked the relaxed ambience

We had a wonderful experience here after our first day on the trail! The room we booked had an amazing view of the mountains, comfortable western style beds, a small table for sitting, outside chairs to sit and watch the sunset, nice sink with separate toilet room, and a place to store our luggage. The receptionist gave us a tour of the room and facility and helped us schedule meal times. The meals were Japanese full course meals and were wonderfully done and hosted by Jiang. You eat in their main reception area and have the chance to meet other guests/hikers traveling through. They have some common porch spots to sit with a drink you purchase from the bar and enjoy the view. The shared onsen and bath is very relaxing and also has a great view. We can’t recommend this place enough, and wish we could have stayed another night!

Great place by any standard. Friendly and fun
It starts with a very warm welcome, great hospitality, and a view of the valley off their terrace. Had a cold beer and a shot of Japanese whiskey on the upper balcony when we arrived on foot from Takijiri on our way to Hongju. Short steep ascent. The rooms were comfortable. The food was delicious and plentiful. The owner played a flamenco song or two on the guitar Wonderful positive vibe. English and Spanish are spoken. Would be a great destination by itself.

Incredible
This was the most special place we stayed our entire time in Japan. John and his family are amazingly talented cooks and musicians, and were so welcoming. We loved their onsen as well. The food was incredibly fresh, healthy, and delicious.

Beautiful rooms and views, great service and food
This place was exceptional, lovely quiry decor, fabulous views, delicious Japanese dinner with many little dishes, staff were happy and smiling and even provided live entertainment. I had no idea this would be so good. Also, the lovely chef could serve us gluten free food, and they knew what they were doing, they even asked whether we did or did not approve of using mirin. They were being very careful. Would thoroughly recommend.

Wonderful accomodation highly recommended
This was our first stop on the Kumano Kodo, walking as a family of four. What a great place to stay - we were quite overwhelmed with the quality of everything! Beautiful big dining area, comfortable rooms and an awesome onsen. Our host was lots of fun, speaks great English (and Spanish) and is a terrific flamenco guitar player. The food was outstanding and the home made plum wine delicious. Loved it here.

Amazing hospitality and views
The Kiri-no-Sato lodge in Takahara was a place I won’t ever forget. The moment I saw the guesthouse, I knew I was going to love it. The rooms and baths both had amazing views. The staff at the guesthouse couldn’t have been more welcoming. And the food was delicious. I will stay here again on future travels.

We had a lovely time
This is the first lodging we stayed in in our 5-day Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, and it set the standard in terms of service, food quality, and room quality. Entertaining Owner
The view from the room is fantastic. The meals were good as well. Do have some times save for breakfast as initially we want to leave as soon as possible for our day 2 walk. The owner is entertaining, sharing his experience along the chat. The only complaint is I felt a bit cold in the room as the heater not functioning well.

Only us but a beautiful stay
We stayed here after hiking from Takijiri on the first day of Kumano Kodo. It has an amazing view of the mountains both from common areas and from the deck of our room. We were there during the week and were the only guests so we missed out on what seems like some exciting nights in the lobby but we still had lovely meals. Was one od the highlights of our whole time in Japan!

A great first stop- a social place, friendly staff and a great onsen to soak in
Room: we had a western style room which was pretty comfy, with an entrance area to place our stuff. Everything we needed was provided for. Our view over the mountains from our room was pretty spectacular. Food: really yum, and plenty to keep us full. They had initially forgotten we were vegetarian, but were happy to accommodate after I explained. If you are vegetarian or vegan, just check when you arrive as a lot of foods in japan include fish sauce, even the pickled vegetables. Bath: super lovely bath (separate for men and women) with a view over the mountains. Vibe: like a remote lodge, friendly and warm.

Entertaining and welcoming host, fantastic meals!
Owner is very welcoming and engaging with guests, we greatly enjoyed our stay. The onsen was piping hot and very nice after the uphill hike. Dinner and breakfast were incredible and there was plenty of it! Our lunch boxes the next day were also delicious. Thank you!!!

館内を飾る様々なインテリアやグリーンは、スペイン風に寄りながらも和やアジアンテイストも加わった、不思議な一体感のある空間でした。 テラスへと続く開放的な食堂での夕食はとても気持ちがよく、また料理もタパスの盛り合わせからお刺身から、こちらも多国籍感を楽しめる上に、どれを食べても美味しかったです。 夕食後のオーナーのフラメンコギター生演奏、まさかこんなところで生でフラメンコが聴けるとは思わず、嬉しいサプライズでした。 また渡瀬温泉から運んでくるというお風呂も肌当たりが良く伸び伸びでき（露天も使えたら嬉しかったです(^^）、部屋から見える空と山並みもきれいでずっと眺めていられるほどで、心も体もすっかりリフレッシュできました。オーナーをはじめスタッフさんの気配りと距離感もちょうどよく、とても過ごしやすかったです。 次の日は少し長めの歩きでしたが、作って頂いたお弁当に入っていた焼きししゃもが、汗をかいた身体にはとてもおいしく感じられました。 私は熊野古道を歩くために泊まりましたが、ここへ泊りにだけでも来る価値があるように思います。 またぜひ泊まりに来たいです。ありがとうございました。

最高のロケーション

Kiri-no-sato - a Wakayama paradise
Jian, the hospitable owner of Kiri-no-sato, welcomed me with a large glass of iced water with lemon when I arrived on a very hot day. Immediately, this warm welcome gave me a great impression of this inn. The building itself is beautiful, with a terrace that gives a fantastic panoramic view of the mountains and valley. My room own was very comfortable, with a terrace. The bathroom has a great view of the mountains. You soak in the hot water and enjoy the mountains scenery. The meals were wonderful, too. Jian uses only local organically grown produce. The truffle and matsutake soup was unforgettable. The experience of staying at Kiri-no-sato was amazing. I am definitely going back to stay for longer.

Phenomenal
The Kiri-no-sato lodge is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed. The quaint but comfortable Japanese style room had the most incredible view of the misty valley and the meal was one of the best of my life. I particularly liked the mountain veggies in the small side dishes. Delicious! Oh, and the baths are top notch. Large, warm rooms, good hot water flow, large bath, outdoor bath with amazing view... nothing better. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful lodge
We loved Takahara "Organic Hotel". It is a fantastic location with great views in a small village in the mountains. The hotel is beautiful with a lovely relaxing lounge with a high traditional wooden ceiling and gorgeous patio overlooking the valley. The onsen has a slate floor and is also made in cedar. The beds were very comfortable and the food delicious. Highly recommended.

Superb location/welcome/food!
One of the most popular-with-foreign hikers places to stay in Kumano Kodo - so it can feel a little like a high class backpackers place...with young, international staff, guests from all over - and everyone passing through for a night. But the staff work hard to make a personal connection to everyone and the lobby/restaurant area is a friendly and stylish place - decor is an eclectic mix of the owner's family antiques (there is a John Bull print in the onsen!!), Indian and Japanese decorations. The rooms have that gorgeous view....but sadly the lobby WiFi doesn't extend to the rooms. I noticed a few housekeeping slip ups which stop me giving it a 5 star rating all round...a cobweb or two.... But really, a lovely place to stay and no wonder it is so popular.

I had a one night stay here. The room was very cosy with a beautiful view overlooking the village below. The meals were sumptous and very delicious. The host was super friendly and witty too. He took time to explain to each group of guests on the dishes. The bath area was clean and amenities provided were sufficient.

It costs a bit more than some accommodation, but we were very pleased with our stay. It's a bit of a hard slog getting up from Takijiri Oji, and we were pleased to be somewhere comfortable with good food and friendly service. And the onsen bath was welcome too.

Sunrise above the clouds
What a wonderful place to stop for the night after that brutal first day of hiking. The view was wonderful, the food was great, and the view was breathtaking. Did I mention the food? It was probably one of the best meals I ate in Japan. I also loved watching the sun rise over Takahara and watching the rising sun cook off the morning fog.

Amazing stay
Amazing stay here, the fiid was awesome and the room spacious. Onsen inside the hotel was great too. Perfect place to enjoy views of the vzlley and the mist, please wake up for the sunrise!

Wonderful hospitality
A lovely ryoken at the end of a steep track, we received a very warm welcome, the hosts were great, the food, onsen and rooms with a view were perfect! What an amazing start to our walk! So lovely to have an onsen and then enjoy dinner in a stylish yukata.

First night on the trail, and a perfect place to rest. Room was a good size, clean and comfortable, and quiet too. Easily located, and right by the trail to begin the second day. Amazing!
Much better than I expected...friendly host, interesting reception and restaurant area to sit in, guest room was clean with a coffee maker and sound system and an amazing view of the mountains. The dinner was very good. Easy to find on the Kumano Kodo. Highly recommended!

The view is legit
This was our first stop on the trail and wow, what a way to kick it off. Beautiful mountain views from our bedroom. Small, clean and comfortable space. The onsen has the same amazing view of the mountains. The dining experience was fantastic. Delicious food and great service.

Beautiful lodge, friendly staff
This ryokan was a great way for us to start off the trip. The staff was beyond friendly and welcoming, and the accommodations were all clean, tidy, and refreshing. The meals remain some of the better food I had on the entire trip. I would definitely book again if given the opportunity!

Wonderful!
We were so glad to arrive at the end of a strenuous walk. We were made very welcome. The room was excellent with everything we needed including a little balcony with chairs, to enjoy the view. The Onsen bath was perfect and dinner superb. Could have stayed for ever!

Nice food and service
The service at the lodge was good and warm. Check in was easy and fast. Our room had a good view despite the fog. We were wet and tired after the day's hike from Takijiri-oji so it was great to have the onsen to ease the muscles. Dinner and breakfast were good. Lunch bento was simple but sufficient. A Gem in the mountains of the Kii Peninsula
This was our first night of five on the Kumano Kodo trail. We would have happily spent several days here, enjoying the wonderful scenery, food, and hospitality. It was a truly excellent place to spend the night and might well have been our favorite after two weeks in Japan. We were very appreciative of how kind, caring, and welcoming the staff was.

Loved it so much that we decided to stay for two nights
Takahara is an ideal place to regain strengths after a long flight and the first walk the day before. The hotel sits on a hilltop overlooking a city and a mountain range. The view from the room is breath-taking. The village itself is lovely. Hotel staff are friendly. Meal is good. This makes a good excuse to spend another full day enjoying the view and surroundings rather than having to continue with the journey the next day. If you have time, I encourage you to do the same. Besides there are some nice routes to walk around just to kill the lazy day.

Charming place to stay in Takahara
Everything about this place was charming. The staff (at least two of whom speak Spanish as well as English) were excellent. The view from our room was incredible. The bathing area was nice. The meals were very good. The owner (or manager?) plays flamenco guitar -- you'll definitely want to ask him to play after dinner!

Like a dream

Luxury at Kiri-no-sato Lodge
Even after research and booking we did not expect Kiri-no-sato Lodge to be as luxurious and beautiful as it was! Amazing views from the room and from the bath. Amazing guesthouse!
Our stay at Kiri-no-Sato was incredible! Even though it’s only a 4km walk, it is so very worth it to spend a night at this place. Everything was just perfect, the location is phenomenal with spectacular views in the morning looking out over the valley which in our case was covered in thick clouds en we were above watching the sun come up. The food was excellent and I think the best we had during our Kumano Kodo, although all the food along the route is really good. The onsen was big, clean, fantastic views again...! The staff and owners we so kind and loving to our 9 month old daughter who received endless cuddles and attention.

Breathtaking view & food!
Very nice reception with cold drinks after a warm day of hiking. The diner and breakfast were outstanding and enjoying the hotels private onsen with a breathtaking view of the mountains and sunset. Memorable!! Only suggestion to improve is the lunchbox. After the diner and breakfast it was a bit disappointing.

Friendly, welcoming, and a spectacular view.
After a steep walk in the rain, Takahara Lodge was a welcome first night and a definite highlight of the trip. Our room had an incredible view of the mountains and the fog rising off of them in the morning is not to be missed. Our meals were absolutely delicious and the help from the staff with how to approach eating some of it was very much appreciated. The granola also gave us all the energy we needed for the next day's hike, I wish we had more!

Divine spot with luxurious aspects and attentive service
This place is truly magical. Not only is the physical site lovely, but the attention to detail - yukatas, beds, meals, drinks, water greeting on arrival, etc. - make it truly stand out. The staff went out of their way to be kind and welcoming, including letting our son sample the adult meal. Everything was pristine, clean and comfortable. It's great that there is a common space where guests can socialize. We loved it.

Lovely luxury stay
This was a lovely place to stay. I think it was the best of all the places I stayed at during my Kumano Mode. I loved the balcony and the outdoor bath, and the view was lovely. The meals were great, although the bento was very small. A bonus for foreigners is that the staff have a very high standard of English.

The location- perched on a hill above the city, but right on the kumano kodo- made for great balcony views. I cannot fault this place at all. It was beautiful, easy to get to, with an amazing view and privacy. The meals were all incredible. I was very happy with the lunch box - as someone who was carrying their own bag the whole trip, space was tight and I wanted to avoid unnecessary weight. Some of the more elaborate lunch boxes were nice, but this was easier to carry and equally delicious.

We intentionally only did a very short first day on the Kumano Kodo (about 2.5 hrs from Takijiri-oji) in order to stay at this hotel and we are certainly glad we did! A charming little hotel, with fantastic views over the mountains, very friendly staff and owner, and great food. Very mixed review
My wife and I stayed one night. As our experience was very mixed we will just summarize the pros and cons. Pros: Very nice room with a great view of the mountains; pleasant staff; good dinner Cons: Seemed very odd and incongruous on a historic Japanese pilgrimage route that Spanish music (contemporary flamenco?) was playing when we arrived and through dinner; we were served some fish when we had requested a vegetarian meal (for which they apologized when they saw we did not eat it); the main part of the lunch box (actually a bag) was one bun with some Kraft Singles-like cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise (fortunately there was a restaurant on the route that day where we could supplement the lunch bag); and the breakfast was very light given we and many other guests would be hiking for several hours that day.

The best hotel in the entire trip
The hotel sits on the mountain top. It's at the end of the trail of our first day of Kumano Kodo walk. The view from the room overlooks the mountains and the valley below. The morning sun-rise moment is breadth-taking. The room was comfortable. Meals are enjoyable. Among 4 places we stayed during the trip, this one was the best in terms of location, scenery, and meals. One caveat about this hotel is that the bus stop is about 1 km downhill. So if you plan to reach it by bus, it means a 1 km walk uphill.

Lovely, warm and charming
I didn't get to stay overnight but enjoyed dinner, breakfast and a bath here. So friendly and charming, spanish music playing in the background. Jun had a log fire with a Takenoko boiling overnight which he prepared for us the following morning. Would stay here next time I think. Jun also was a great help to me when I got lost and came back to his place after 4 hours.

Hotel with a lovely view
We spent our first night on a 4-day Kumano Kodo hike in Kiri-no-Sato Takahara, and it was a lovely introduction to guest accommodations in the Japanese countryside. The room was spacious with its own ensuite toilet and there was a shared bath down the hall. The views from the small veranda outside the room and the dining hall are spectacular. The meals had a variety of dishes prepared with care. We felt right at home here!

Perfect place to stay
Don't underestimate those first 4km from Takijiri-oji to Takahara. It's a strenuous 1 in 3 climb - or rather scramble - up and over tree roots,stones and rocks, plus lots of steps and stairs. On arrival in the rain at Kiri-no-Sato Lodge, I was greeted with tea and a towel. My room was lovely with a comfortable bed, and ensuite toilet and basin. The onsen bath was just down the hallway and lovely and warm. The shower area was well supplied with toiletries. The views from my room would have been spectacular on a clear and fine day, but even in the rain and mist they were pretty amazing. Dinner in the dining hall was delicious, with many courses and lots of different dishes. Breakfast was also excellent. The lunch box was slightly disappointing, consisting of a banana and two rolls filled with ham and processed cheese slices. But tasted good enough after hiking 10km through the mountains. All in all, a perfect place to stay.

very good location, nice view, even in the winter. Good meal. Had very happy chat with reception. But bad experience during the bath. Only cold water supply... Guest house was not able to fix it. Have to use the hot water in the Onsen to finish the bath...

Unbelievable

Fantastic place
Highly recommended. The rooms are very comfortable, and each one has a little balcony from which the amazing view of the valley floor can be enjoyed. Dinner and breakfast were great. We stayed at some amazing places during our hike and this was among the favorites.

Romantic place above the fog
All rooms (guestroom, bath, restaurant) are looking with big windows to the valley - a dream. The guestroom even has a small terrace. The meals are excellent, just the lunch packet was a disappointment after this perfect stay.

A favourite on the trail
My husband and I had stayed at the Lodge on a previous visit so when booking this trip to include a group of friends we were keen for them to enjoy the Lodge- which they did! Great rooms, service and food. Plus peaceful outlook. As the lodge was full and not enough room for us all my husband and I stayed at a lovely house down the hill and came to the Lodge for meals (thanks!). Book early as popular. We didn't have lunch boxes and instead had lunch at Cafe Bocu. My goodness that place is worth the walk! The most delicious lunch I've had in Japan!

Kiri-no-Sato Takahara lodge
Excellent service. Our travel to this lodge was delayed by Typhoon #21, so we arrive in Tanabe late at night. After Kumano Tourism met us at the train station and got us on the correct bus, the owner of the the Takahara lodge drove down the mountain to pick us up and take us to the accommodations. We arrived to a very nice dinner waiting for us. Our stay was brief, but the service, accommodations and food was excellent

Welcome sight after hard hike
Kiri no Sato is located on top of a ridge and all rooms have beautiful views of the mountains. Owner is very friendly, meals are beautifully presented and delicious, rooms are comfortable, and onsen (group, separated by gender) feels great after the hike.

Wonderful experience in every way
Kiri-no-Sato was a wonderful, wonderful hotel. After a hike that was a lot harder than we anticipated, the hotel is very close to the vista and lodge and in the morning is again right by the trail starting place. The food here is amazing - so much care goes into every meal and the people at the hotel where a mix of foreign and non-foreign tourists. The rooms and baths were amazing and comfortable, with little patios. The only minor downside were all the mosquitoes, but not much the hotel could do about that. The trail mix they sell is a great delight to eat on the trail as a snack.

Died and Gone to Heaven?
Fresh off the plane, and a day trip from Osaka to Tanabe. Time to walk; a little uncertain - where were we going?; how hard was the walk?; what would our first guesthouse be like? We sweated (appropriately) on the walk, made to the guesthouse before dark, were welcomed and made to feel at ease. Our room delightful, the onsen melted away any recollection that the walk had been 'hard', the meal was a veritable feast, so charmingly presented and with such exquisite, distinctive, delectable taste. Paradise in abundance after staggering through the first of many kilometres to come. We slept very well, waking momentarily by the 1:04 a.m. tremor. Couldn't have wished for anything better. Fully refreshed and replenished for Day 2. Lunch lovely

Wonderful lodge

A modern mountain lodge in a beautiful setting. A cold welcome drink followed by a long soak in the hot bath (bliss). Delicious meal (my first hibachi) served by knowledgable staff. Fabulous. Great hospitality!

Just fantastic

Very beautiful (and delicious food)
It was very beautiful to stay here and the food is very special. The bath is nice and the staff is very helpful. I would say that the only minor down point for me was that the wifi was very bad and only available in the lobby. I needed to make backups of my pictures but that wasn't possible resulting in that I could take any pictures the next day! But it's a relaxing place and the view is incredible!!!

Totally luxurious stay. Beautiful room with wonderfull views. Diner was very tasty and nicely presented. Breakfast also. About lunchbox one remark: Sandwiches were fine. I love the view from my room where I could see the misty mountains in the morning. The bath was good and not too crowded during my stay. They provided coffee maker in the room. Room was spacious with a veranda and seats to view the mountains. I would like to say thank you to the staff who delivered my power adaptor when I left it in my room the next day. I forgot to ask his name. Definetely would love to stay again. Dinner was lovely and you could see sunset from there while dining.

Can I give Kiri-no-Sato seven stars?
We loved everything about this place and it was the highlight of our Kumano Kodo trip. Jian and his staff are exceptional. The rooms are beautiful, the food is fantastic and the service is without fault. If you are passing through Takahara, make sure you stay here at least one night. We spent two and were glad we did.

Everything about this accommodation was exceptional. From the welcome when we first arrived to the stunning views from the lovely tatame rooms, the friendly staff who served outstanding meals. Beautiful setting
We were welcomed at Kiri-no-Sato by our very friendly, English speaking host/ innkeeper. The rooms have a great view of the valley and mountains beyond, the onsen was very attractive, and the meals were sumptuous. If you have a bit of time and good weather, you can relax on the sunny patio (equally nice view) and enjoy some refreshments from the well-stocked bar before dinner. A top-notch accommodation.

Fantastic hotel, uncomfortable service.
Overall we had a wonderful stay at Kiri-no-Sato. The hotel is in a beautiful location and the views cannot be better. Sitting on the terrace after a long day of hiking is incredible. The food was also very good and there was an excellent selection of local beer and wine. However, we were slightly put off by the service which made us feel very uncomfortable at times. The owner/ server was very judgmental when ordering drinks (several comments were made after ordering two drinks after a long day on the Kumano Kodo) and overall, this made us feel very uncomfortable in what was supposed to be a relaxing stay as part of our two week vacation in Japan.

Great stay!

Nice room and view, okay food, skip the lunch box
Great view of the mountains and warm service. Food was only okay, had better at the other places. Bath was okay but wasn't sure how regularly they cleaned it. Skip the lunch box! We had some sad cheese/lettuce in an english muffin. Recommend buying the sushi bentos you will find at the shop just half an hour before Chikatsuyu (there are eating places in Chikatsuyu too). We completed the walk from Takahara to Chikatsuyu in three hours.

The building and rooms as such are beautiful and well maintained. The food was absolutely amazing - probably the best meal we had in Japan when combining presentation, taste, and given the fact it was all presented and explained to us. Great hosts who helped us sort out our luggage shuttle (which we thought we had booked on the Kumano Travel website, but it had dropped out of our reservation - more on this below).

Very warm welcome and pleasant stay
The host of the Takara Lodge greeted me with warm tea after a chilly day of hiking. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and room very comfortable. It was the only inn I stayed at during my trek with an en suite toilet and sink. The room was very comfortable, perfect for my first night on the trail.

Friendly and Faultless
This is the nicest place we stayed in Japan. Everything was perfect - we had a friendly welcome when we arrived, the bathhouse was so clean, the rooms were really comfortable and we appreciated having our own toilet and handbasin. The views were spectacular and the food was the best we had during our trip. We just wish we had been staying more than one night. We would climb the steep hill again from Takajiri just to stay in this place!

Stunning views and amazing food.

A wonderful experience
Our guestroom, the dining area, and the shared bath all had wonderful views. Our guestroom was very comfortable and included many conveniences. The staff spoke excellent English and were extremely friendly and helpful. Dinner was fabulous. Dinner was fabulous in taste, variety, and presentation. Breakfast was very good, and the lunch box was reasonable although not exciting. This was a great place to stay in a very convenient location. One of the best meals we had in Japan, great service, awesome view
This was the first hotel we stayed at on the Kumano Kodo trail. The view from the hotel and the room was gorgeous. After a long day of travelling and hiking, I can't think of a more perfect place to rest, enjoy an onset, eat delicious food and get a good night's sleep.

Everything is great except for the packed lunch
This is a wonderful place to stay. The onsen is really nice and the food is fantastic. The staff is also very friendly. The only bad thing I have to say is that the packed lunch was so bad I threw it away and bought something at a store. It was stale bread with ham and mayo, nothing at all like the breakfast or dinner. Other places that packed lunches did really nice Japanese style bento that were miles better.

Just awesome

Exceptional hospitality
The hotel is in a superb location with magnificent views oever the misty valley. The staff spoke excellent English and were warm and welcoming. The room was very comfortable with all the home away from home comforts. The meals were exceptional served with warm hospitality and good humour. Easy to find as long as you don't stray from the Kumano Kodo main route. Onsen has a stunning view also over the valley. Highly recommend a night here.

The best hospitality ever
What a way to start off the trip! Jian and his crew are ever so friendly, helpful, and full of surprises. One of the workers drove me to one of the stamps that I had missed in Takahara. During dinner, Jian entertained us with live music, and even offered me a pair of pants when I realized that I had not packed properly for the trip! He even sent an item that I had left behind to one of my later minshuku! I can't thank Jian and his staff for being such wonderful people, going out of their way to ensure that everyone had a restful stay after a rough first day on the trails.

Friendly and Excellent Service
We loved staying at this lodge! One of the staff even fetched us from the Takahara town center to make sure we got to the lodge safely. The food was really well prepared and tasted so good, and the server even explained ech dish to us before we ate. Onsen was great, as well, and had a beautiful view. The view from the bedroom was also wonderful. Takahara does live up to its name of Village in the Mist.

Kiri-no-Sato Takqhara Lodge
The lodge was a lovely stay at the end of short and challenging walk. One of our party had trouble on the walk and he was kindly looked after and dropped to the bus the next day to travel onwards to meet those of us walking. Beautiful sunset over the valley and a dinner that was nothing but exceptional. Highly recommend the Lodge and the location.

Very good
What can I say? We liked it a lot. The whole experience of Kumano is unforgettable. Even if tracks are difficult or maybe because of that we enjoyed the places we stayed: quiet, clean and fascinating. Kiri-no-Sato was the first place on our way to Hongu. The mist in Takahara is a spiritual experience resembling the athmosphere of some Japanese literature. Lovely

Perfect Start to the Nakahechi
We almost felt that we should have hiked further to deserve the beautiful views and fantastic meals we enjoyed at Kiri-no-Sato. We had no trouble traveling from Kyoto to the start of the Nakahechi trail in Takijiri-oji and making the short, steep ascent to Takahara on day one of our hike ? arriving at approx. 15:30. The afternoon sun streaming into the onsen room, with views over the mountains, was truly memorable. Meals were beautifully prepared from local ingredients. We were able to purchase a small guide to the Nakahechi Route (produced by the Tanabe International English Guide Association) in the accommodation reception/gift shop which we found a very interesting reference throughout our walk.

This lodge was our first night's accommodation. Our Japanese style room was clean and spacious. Supper and breakfast were great, but a little bit disappointed we received ham and cheese buns for our lunch box instead of traditional Japanese food. Don't miss this gem
A most amazing setting for a lodge with the views that change constantly with the changing mists that move though the mountains. Then with a warm welcome and friendly service we began a memorable time. Jian the manager/host is a wonderful character and very knowledgeable about the area explaining each of the dishes that were produced from the ingredients from the farms and gardens nearby. The meals were scumptious. Once in a lifetime!

Perfection
I stayed here the first night of my Kumano Kodo hike and never wanted to leave. The rooms have a gorgeous view of the mountains and valley. They're spacious, well-equipped, and in terrific shape, with a small patio for reading and relaxation. The onsen is terrific. And the food is just incredible, with obscene portions. Everything was delicious (from the local produce to the local beef to the freshly made pizza). Spoke to the owner over some hot sake in the evening - incredibly friendly guy. Can't recommend this place more highly.

Beautiful Experience

Excellent guesthouse
We stayed for one night in a big room (16 tatami mats), which was really spacious and comfortable with en-suite toilets, and view over the valley. The staff was very welcoming, helpful, and spoke adequate english. The hotel has a small cafe, so, in addition to the meals, you can have coffee/tea and a small snack. They also serve drinks, including a nice plum wine (not included in the price). Dinner and breakfast were very good, and the lunchbox consisted of 2 simple but tasty sandwiches. The communal bathroom/onsen was very well maintained and furnished. Overall great experience.

Foodie Heaven
The hospitality, the organisation, the accommodation and the meals were outstanding. If I could give a higher mark I would. I had expected typical guesthouse hospitality which in Japan is always of a high standard but this was simply above and beyond. The views from my room were sublime. The exquisite dinner was of a 5-star restaurant standard with dishes like mountain vegetables and peanut tofu.

Wonderful reward after a steep walk from Takijiri-oji
This is a delightful guesthouse. On arrival, tired and hot, we were greeted by friendly staff and a glass of cold water. The guesthouse has a beautiful location, wonderful food and friendly, helpful staff. When you soak in the Onsen, you overlook peaceful scenery. The rooms are not deluxe but are very comfortable with the same scenic outlook as the Onsen.

We arrived soaked after 8 hours of walking in the rain to be greeted with warm smiles and a host who took all our wet stuff (including smelly shoes) to the dry room and led us to our beautiful Japanese style room with stunning views of the local mountain ranges. The bath also has views of the mountains as does the dining room. Cool, retro stuff everywhere and beautiful building. The music in the dining area is also great. All the staff super friendly, kind, and accommodating. Meals delicious and filling. Couldn't ask for more.

What a wonderful accommodation to spend the first night in Kumano Kodo pilgrimage!
There's no words to explain the deep felling of peace I felt during my stay here in this beautiful lodge. Everything was really nice, friendly and at the same time really polite and respectful. During the bath you can enjoy a beautiful sunset from a huge and wide window on a amazing landscape. The dinner was so enjoyable that also now, after my coming back home in Italy, I remember the meal with great pleasure.

One of our best experiences in Japan!
Staying at Takahara Lodge was one of our best experiences in Japan during a 24 day trip. Since the village is hard to access directly by bus, one of the hotel staff offered to pick us up directly from the nearest bus stop. We were so thankful for this. Most importantly however, the meal we had that evening was probably one of the best we had during our entire trip! The staff was extremely polite and professional. Everything seemed to be of high quality and worked well to making us totally relaxed. I would highly recommend this place.

Worth it!
It's a tough choice when starting the Nakahechi hiking course. From the Takijiri bus stop, it's just a 2-hour or so hike to Takahara. However, it's a beautiful setting and worth spending a night here. Great food, bath, and room with a view.

An onsen with breathtaking view
Both the guest room and onsen command a beautiful mountain view of Takahara. The hotel staff provided very good service. There are two areas that may still have rooms for improvement. First, some dust was found near the edge of the washing basin. Second, I misunderstood that the Western style room would come with a supper in western style but it was actually Japanese. I suggest highlighting that only Japanese meal will be served in the reservation web page. In general, my son and me like this Organic Hotel very much!

Kiri-no-Sato
Walked in from Takijiri end after a bus ride from Tanabe. Were as hungry as bears after the walk, and fortunately didn't meet any hungry bears along the way. The location is lovely and looks out over a deep valley, which was filled to the brim with white cloud baked by sunshine the following morning. The rooms were bright, clean and comfortable. From the Onsen you could look out over the valley whilst soaking those weary legs. Dinner was outstanding, probably one of the best meals I have ever had. Our host was very helpful and friendly. Overall a fantastic experience, would highly recommend this accomodation.

Great stay after a challenging first day
After a very wet trek from Takajiri, we were so happy to arrive. Our host welcomed us warmly with a dry towel and hot tea. Our room was comfortable and had a beautiful view of the mists over the town below. Loved the dinner and breakfast. Would improve the bag lunch: onigiri instead of meat in buns and mikan instead of a banana. Would definitely return.

Nice and conveniant accommodation
After a difficult walk it is nice to arrive at the hostel. You get time to relax and take a bath before diner. Which is very pleasant. Everything what they can do to feel at home will be done. The diner is surprisingly. Except the wifi everything goes well.

Warm Welcome and Easy Atmosphere
We had a fantastic stay at the Kiri-no-Sato Lodge. The staff were accomodating, friendly, and helpful -- and made arrangements to accomodate some special requests we had made. We REALLY appreciated that! Thank you so much, all of you! The food was amazing, the rooms were spotless, and the baths were lovely. We would definitely love to stay there again! The only thing we would suggest changing is the lunchbox. The meals at the lodge were so lovely and so carefully prepared that we were very surprised to find processed cheese and lunchmeat sandwiches for our lunch the next day. The lodge itself was so wonderful that we didn't mind the lunch so much, but it definitely could use some improvement.

We stayed 1 night at the organic hotel. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and helped us plan our hikes. Rooms were super comfy with gorgeous views overlooking the mountains. Food was delicious. Hard to beat
I have stayed at Kiri-no-Sato twice, both as my first night on the Nakahechi and highly recommend it. Kiri-no-Sato has its own special vibe, the 'beer garden' is a delightful place to unwind, the onsen the best I've experienced on the trail, the food is outstanding, the rooms clean, comfortable with lovely views and the welcome 100% welcoming. Its one of those places I look forward to returning to :-)

Excelllent stay
The owner Jian was very hospitable and helpful, he offered to pick us up at Takijiri. Then drove us back there again the next day. Service was very personalized and special. The view is stunning. Overall our stay was memorable! We highly recommend this place.

Outstanding!

A lovely place
This was a delightful location and an ideal rest place. The meal in the evening and the breakfast were wondeful and the staff were most kind. Our only disappointment was the lunch box: we were expecting a Japanese meal and it was in fact two filled rolls. If they are providing western style lunch boxes it would be better to know in advance.

The manager, Shino Jaim , was very friendly and helpful, and made links between guests. The place was excellent in all ways, and had marvellous, magical views. It was an absolute delight to arrive there, and provided with all the amenities we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there.

Fine Hospitality in the Beautiful Wakayama Mountains
This is a perfect small hotel! The owner, a remarkably talented and personable fellow, was warm and welcoming. He introduced me to both friends and other guests which led to some of the best memories I will hold from my visit to Japan. The setting is exquisite-high up, overlooking both a rich mountain valley and its town, and the great misty mountains. Rooms face these mountains with small private decks which offered a fine way to relax at the end of a long day. The bath was exquisite! Lined with large rocks and overlooking the mountains in the distance, it warmed me in a spacious, clean setting. The meals were outstanding. By the time I reached Kiri-no-Sato, I'd enjoyed days of vegetarian meals in the Koyasan temples. The meals here were just as outstanding, and the coffee, yummy. What I want to convey is that this place is visually stunning, inside and out, beautifully equipped, and hosted by a most remarkable man. I recommend it, full heartedly!

Glorious hilltop paradise
This was the perfect spot to spend the first night of our pilgrimage and a wonderful welcome to the region. We started from Tokyo and arrived at Takijiri around 1.30, then walked about 2.5 hours to Kiri-no-santo. The staff were amazing and the food was superb. The rooms were spacious and the bath house perfect.

Superb ryokan
From staff stopping whilst we were taking a break on the Kumano Kodo trail to check if we were lost (thank you but 'no') to a wonderful friendly welcome on check-in, to a great chat with the waiting staff after dinner, we were made to feed very welcome. The room was to 'die for'. Large double room with panoramic views straight out over the valley. The bath was large and well appointed - again with the same great valley views. Dinner the best we had on the 5 day walk. Mountain vegetables and bamboo shoots were just some of the local produce on the table. The dining area is a lovely modern take on traditional Japanese building techniques. If we could have, we would have stayed another night on this trip!

Everything was perfect at kiri-no-sato. The host, the chef and the manager were all extremely gracious. The dinner and breakfast were works of art and tasted wonderful. Definitely a fantastic ambience as well with a fireplace roaring in the common room all day. I would have given them a 5/5 for food but the lunchboxes let them down. They were ham and processed cheese sandwiches - which was extremely unexpected. If they could sort out the lunches then it's a 5 star across the board!

Beautiful Setting, Fantastic Hotel
Really loved this place with it's beautiful views, roaring log fire. Especially appreciated all the little touches such as the real coffee boiler and the friendly atmosphere.It's traditional but with all mod cons- genuinely the nicest place we stayed in Japan.

Place was great Jian was lovely and very accommodating. The most beautiful views over the mountain. Food was incredible and there was lots of it! Didn't leave hungry at all. Having the toilet and basin in the bedroom was great and the rooms were well appointed with heating and a kettle.

Our room was large and we had a spectacular view over the valley. We arrived wet, cold and tired from the climb up from Takijiri so a soak in the onsen bath was welcome. Meals were served in the dining room and were really good. We opted to have them prepare a boxed lunch for us and were a bit disappointed to find sandwiches. I must say that they were excellent and I apprecuate the effort they went to in order to make us comfortable.

A welcome haven at the end of the day
It was such a joy to arrive at Kiri-no-Sato Lodge after our first day of walking. Enjoyed a cold beer on the verandah looking over the mountains and valleys. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Most excellent meals at the lodge (dinner and breakfast) and the packed lunch kept us energised for the second day of walking.

Stunning mountain views
Very comfortable and clean, run by English-speaking hosts. Great onsen and then a delicious Japanese dinner, greatly appreciated after the hard walk from Takijiri. The typhoon was expected the next day. The following morning it was raining. Our host advised us against walking to Chikatsuyu and very kindly drove us and 3 others out to the highway bus stop.

An excellent stop after the initial 2 hr steep hike in heat and humidity. Great view at the end of the day looking out from the terrace over the mountains with a cool drink! Room was unexpectedly large - in fact 2 joined rooms, one a TV/rest room and the other the sleeping room. Terrific views from the windows and balcony. Staff and food excellent.

Great way to start our trip!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely lodge. Our room was lovely, overlooking valley and mountains with a small porch outside. The baths, filled with onsen water Jian brings in, are lovely. The food is delicious. We had a warm welcome from Jian and his wife who are friendly and helpful. Jian speaks excellent English and is wonderful about sharing his knowledge of the area of of the cuisine. Highly recommend this lovely spot.

Heavenly desintation after hiking
When we arrived, weary after hiking quickly to beat the sunset, we were greeted so warmly by our English-speaking host. The rooms were beautiful and clean, with an incredible view of the mountains. The bath was perfect, and our meal might have been the best meal of our whole trip (thank you for accommodating our vegetarian diet!). The staff here are so friendly, and the lodge has a great international simple and comfortable luxury in the mountains.

Great area, superb lodge
The man at the front desk was very helpful, and knew English. I believe he knows a third language as well, but I do not remember what. The lodge itself is very beautiful, and the rooms were clean. Dinner was quite amazing, and I was surprised how much they feed you. It was actually too much food for me, but I ate it anyway because of the long hike I had the next day. Bath was good, hot and very clean.

Wonderful experience!
My son and I stayed here on our first day hiking the Nakahechi route on the Kumano Kodo. We had had a long day, traveling by train from Kyoto, and then by bus to the start of our hike. As we came out of the forest into a wonderful clearing and small village, we found the hotel right on the hiking route. It could not have been more convenient. When we arrived, our host was waiting for us and warmly welcomed us. Our luggage was waiting for us and he showed us to our room - a traditional Japanese room with mats and a low table. We had a wonderful little deck with 2 chairs with just an amazing view out over the mountains. Dinner was served at about 6 in the main dining area and it was wonderful. A huge amount of delicious Japanese food - rice, fish, etc etc. Really more food than I am used to eating but very welcome after a long day of hiking. The breakfast the following morning was equally generous, as was the wonderful bento box lunch that was prepared for us. Just amazing. We were also introduced to onsen bathing here and our host took special care to explain everything to us so we would not be nervous or hesitant. It was really marvelous. The hotel also had wireless internet, which we had not expected in so remote a location. We had to go to the lobby to use it, but there were plenty of very comfortable chairs there and it was also an opportunity to socialize with some of the other guests there - a large group of very interesting hikers from Australia. This hotel was beautiful and was one of the two nicest places we stayed on our Kumano adventure. I would love to return and stay there again. Beautiful, clean place, very friendly English speaking staff, wonderful food. Just nothing bad to say - highly, highly recommended!!!

Our favourite stay along the nakahechi route!
This was the first night of our walk and all in our group agree, our favourite. We arrived late afternoon after walking on our first day. We sat out on the deck to have beers and watch the sun set. That was a great start, and it only got better! Everything was fantastic - the meals, the bath and the service. The lodge has a lovely welcoming atmosphere and everyone who works there was so friendly. Even though the walk was only two hours so technically you could plan a longer walk and stay further down the route, you would be missing one of the highlights of the walk.

Kiri-no-Sato
This lodge is fairly well furnished, brightly lit from natural light and a lot of wood furniture. There was an electric "oil-heater" in the bedroom (this was appreciated, as the mornings were a little cold ~ 10deg C). Small bedside clock, kettle for tea, bidet with the toilet. Much better compared than Minshuku Yunotaniso. However, the traditional guesthouse do have their attractiveness in the quaint features. Kiri-no-sato is a little more hip. Major plus points to the Hotel Manager: Jian-san. We enjoyed his hospitality immensely and will recommend this place for travellers going to this area. The distance from the bus-stop is a little far to trek for overseas visitors with large suitcases. But, do let the hotel know if you want a pick-up. No fuss, they will pick you up and it is a short drive up-hill.

Best place on the Kumano Koda trek!
This place was a standout in terms of service, location and everything you could wish for...only wish we could have stayed here longer!

Awesome views!!
We loved this lodge. Great service and very clean; the lodge is only 6 years old (in 2014) so the operators are keen at keeping the facilities modern and tidy. A wonderful treat for 2 dirty hikers.

Located on the side of a hill in Takahara, the room was simple Japanese style with an absolutely amazing view and small deck. The shared Onsen also had a window overlooking same beautiful view. I was not expecting it and it was absolutely stunning. Meals were regional cuisine using their own produce and skilfully prepared. Most importantly they were delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Great stay for first night on the trail
We opted to stay here our first night hiking the kumano trail instead of in town at Tanabe and it was worth it! Beautiful views across the valley, wonderful food and the onsen was amazing. Very nice place and well worth the money!

Loved this place!
We arrived to the Takahara lodge after a long day of travel. We were warmly welcomed by Jang the owner and we were impressed with the views from the lodge, the onsen was great and also had great views. The meals were delicious and we enjoyed the selection of mountain vegetables and excellent fish. It was also great to have a bento box prepared for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the rooms which were very comfortable with twin beds in room toilet. The best part was waking up and seeing the mountain range covered in mist and walking the gardens near by. Highly recommend staying here! Another item I wanted to note was how much I truly appreciated the response from the travel service. We had to make a last minute change and Brad was so kind and responsive and even helped us call the guest house to pick us up since we were very late. It was truly a great experience to work with the Kumano travel service.

Luxury in the mountains
A wonderful surprise and fantastic way to finish a day of hiking through the mountains. Our host was friendly and most accomodating despite us arriving later than expected and drenched from the downpour. The lodgings were surprisingly large, well maintained and clean. The indoor hot spring bath was a blessing after a long day. Dinner and breakfast was a deliciously feast of local quisine over looking breath-taking views of the mountains. An unforgettable experience.

Beyond expectations!
What a beautiful location and facilities! We were greeted with warm welcomes and amazing hospitality. One person in our party was arriving late by bus and the owner freely offered to pick him up in his car. The meals were great and we liked that they were traditional Japanese food mad with local ingredients. We were happy for the coffee too :)

Amazing
This hotel was awesome. The cute couple who runs it were the friendliest people. It was the best. The bathrooms were great and relaxing. Meals were delicious. Location is good for hiking the trail. We would stay here again just for the friendly couple who runs it. Awesome!

Organic Hotel is a winner!
I couldn't believe my luck when I arrived at Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge. The location and view from the room was absolutely stunning and it just got better from there. The facilities and service were top class, the food was excellent and the staff were unobtrusive but very helpful. Awesome lunch box provided for the next day's walk.

Magical and Picturesque
Takahara lodge is an easy, though uphill hike from the trailhead Nakahechi. The room over looking the mountains was just breathtaking and the onsen was incredible after the day's hike. The food was the best I have had in my two years in Japan. It was incredible! I would do Kumano kodo again just to stay at Takahara.

Although no choice in Takahara, it could not have been better.
Spectacular location, delicious meals and very hospitable staff. The common room (reception/dining/lounge) was a very welcome, warm respite after the initial shock of the Kumano Kodo. The onsen helped relieve the muscles that were protesting so strongly.

A great first stop on the Kumano Kodo
This is a lovely place to stay. Small enough to be personal and yet big enough to meet some other walkers. The rooms have magnificent views across the valley, the bath was large and very well laid out, the food was special (fresh and delicious). It all made for a great stay.

Charming Mountain Retreat
Get up early and watch the mist rise from the valley below. Enjoy a marvelous breakfast and don't forget your luncheon bento. Remember fondly the fantastic dinner from the night before. Come here once and you'll want to come back forever. This lodge is a great place for your first night stay along the Kumono Kodo. It's a steep climb here from Taki-jiri Oji, so take your time on trail and check into Kiri-no-Sato. If you have the time, stay an extra day. You can also reach the lodge by bus to the village below. Call the manager for personal pickup service.

A wonderful place to stay
The room was wonderful (clean and relatively spacious) and the view from the deck was brilliant. The facilities were great. We really enjoyed our stay at the Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was great. Some western options (eggs & toast) for breakfast would be good.

The best lodging of my trip!
I was very impressed by the Takahara Lodge as the food was exceptional and the room was beautiful. After spending my afternoon drinking tea on the balcony, bathing in the rock pool, and watching the sunset over the hills I was thoroughly refreshed. The only disappointment was staying here on the first night of my trek, as all of the other lodgings paled by comparison.

Amazing
This is the best hotel I've stayed in! I stayed in the western style room for the first night of my 5 day Kumano trek. The room is perfect and the view is simple breathtaking. My only regret is that I have to leave early for next day's hike. There's really too much food for dinner. 3 different kinds of fish but all prepared the same way so a little more variation would be nice. I would definitely return just to relax next time!

A beautiful location

An absolutely beautiful setting. The room was everything it needed to be, and the staff were very understanding and helpful (with our lack of language). The common areas (reception and area for meals) have a great informality and warmth. It's worth taking a pre-dinner walk around the quiet village, among the houses perched on the slope of the mountain and small gardens.

Excellent View and Food
The food here was some of the best food we've had anywhere in Japan. It was authentic and had integrity and we appreciate the commitment to local and organic. The views were inspiring and phenomenal. Especially in morning. The room was clean and fresh and pleasant. Sadly, the outdoor bath was broken and overall, it didn't take advantage of the incredible view. That's the only thing to improve here.

The place was very nice, our room had a fantastic view. The bathroom was spotless and equipped with every comfort. The meals were plentiful and very tasty! The service was impeccable: they were all very nice and I appreciated to talk a bit in English and Spanish with the manager. Also the cook was very helpful and kindful: we asked to her if it was possible having some coffee and orange juice for breakfast and she added these dishes in our breakfast with a big smile, even if they was not foreseen in the menu.

What can we say? The greatest mountain view possible - just from the room, which also had a small porch to watch the sun set over the other side of the valley. The food was amazing and the very attentive waiter wouldn't even stop bringing new courses. A huge and beautiful wooden onsen made everything perfect.

should stay longer
A great retreat after a demanding and hot walk from Takijiri. The food served were excellence!All vegetables freshly picked from local area and nicely presented. The jewel of this place is operator Mr Jian Shino who speaks fluent English,Sapnish,Chinese Mandarin and of course Japanese. He made our stay memorable with him going the extra miles even to play guitar to entertain us after dinner! If we knew we will stay longer at least two nights!

This was by far one of our highlights in Japan. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. They spoke excellent English and were so helpful. The food was truly unforgettable! I am vegetarian and my partner is not, and they made sure we were both absolutely satisfied.. The room was amazing. Really clean, spacious and quiet. The dining room was beautiful, tastefully decorated and very warm. They had a fire outside with chairs to sit around it, which was magical. The location was beautiful as well.

Fantastic Stay at Takahara
We thank the hosts for their warm hospitality and wonderful food at kiri no sato. The spectacular view from the balcony was beyond words and the food was surpassed any expectations. It was fusion gourmet food, which I would hardly expect to get in Kumano. Kudos!

Wonderful Ryokan
We stayed on our way to Hongu for one night in the Kiri no Sato Takahara Lodge. It was a wonderful stay. The room was spaceous and clean with a woderful veranda to enjoy the view and the sunset. The bathrooms were amazing and we enjoyed the bath very much. It was wonderful to soak in the water after a short but hot walk to Takahara an later sit outside and enjoy the view The staff in the lodge was helpful and very friendly. The food was great. a lot of different mountain food from the surrounding was offered. We were very happy and can only recommand a stay in the Kiri no Sato Takahara Lodge for anyone walking the pilgrim trail. Thank you very much Beat und Katrin

Service trough the typhoon,
The trains stopped running, so they came and picked us up (4 hours there and back), ask us when we wanted dinner and then showed us the baths. A long bath later (with the most fantastic view) and a wonderful dinner with local everything, we sat down and wondered over our luck of finding a place like this and with a staff like this!

Amazing location & lovely rooms
This is a lovely guest house with friendly, helpful staff. The man on reception spoke good English. The view from the restaurant and rooms is spectacular. We ate a lot of Japanese food while we were there and we were slightly disappointed with our evening meal - just not quite as tasty as in other places we stayed. However they arranged a 'western style' breakfast as we were travelling with my parents who are not keen on Japanese food - bacon, eggs and fresh rolls were delicious! I would recommend this hotel

steep uphill climb out Takajiri but worth every meter to get to this really cool guesthouse architecturally the lobby ceiling structure is out of this world cool very traditionally Japanese the service A+ from reception to checkout not a finer place that I know of the onsen is small but very nice the food excellent there is a nice fireplace in the lobby and the hotel setting in the mountains will bring it on home

World class - what else can be said.
What a surprise. After climbing what felt like 150 flights of stairs (first day on the trail - it's what it felt like), I came upon Takahara. From the moment of my arrival, to the minute I forced myself to leave, I felt at home and luxuriated by this Inn. It is clean, well appointed and designed to make you feel like royalty. And then, you slide open the screens in your room and 'wowsa' - what a view! Then, as the evening progresses and the sun sets, the view will amaze you. Out of the corner of your eye, you see the sun rise and the mountains climb out of the clouds - the morning light will again amaze you out the window. The baths are splendid. Whoever was cooking the evening of my dinner had some serioius training. The layout of the dinner was beautiful. But, the flavors in each of the dishes were spectacular. One built upon the next. I'm a tough audience, and was incredibly happy with my meal. My morning was topped off with freshly roasted coffee beans. It is a splendid place to which I shall return - hopefully very soon.

悪天候で電車が止まり、到着が遅れ、初日は歩くことができず、最初はショックでしたが、たかはらさんの御主人のおもてなし、お部屋、お料理、景色その他全てが素晴らしくて、とても素敵な日に変わりました。翌日早く出発するので朝ご飯が食べて行けない私に、自家製パンとおにぎりを沢山持たせてくださり、それがまた本当に美味しかったです！古道の途中景色の良い場所で頂きました。格別でした。あの味は忘れられません◎是非今度は親や友達を連れて行ってあげたいです。ありがとうございました。

Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge
What an amazing perch to hike into! The Takahara lodge is warm (nice lobby fireplace), extremely friendly and wonderful accommodations. The baths are excellent and have fantastic views of the mountain and valley below. After dinner one night, the manager, Jian, made a wonderful outdoor fire where everyone gathered and exchanged stories. It was a great and unexpected cultural bond that we experienced. We would highly recommend the Takahara lodge!
