Great location at the start of Kumano Kodo
We arrived here a day before we took off hiking the Kumano Kodo. It's a very practical place to start your walk. Across the street is the Kumano Kodo information centre where you can get the maps and stamp booklet. Kodo-no-Mori Anchan provides supper, breakfast & lunch upon request and luggage service, so that's very convenient.

Good location. They didn't seem too enthusiastic about customer service but were nice people. Access to a kettle would have been great and it was our least favorite meal on the trail. However great location - literally at the trailhead for an early start.

Disappointing first stay on the Kumano Kodo
We were very disappointed with our stay at this guesthouse. The main issues were lack of facilities for the number of guests (11) and lack of privacy in our room which was impacted by noise from every direction. Our room was located on the front corner of the house, next to the front door, opposite the entrance corridor, opposite the shop/dining room side entrance, and with the kitchen next to our room's back wall. The road ran past the front, the Kumano Kodo Takijiri entrance gate was next to our side window so people were walking past or stopping and talking, and there was a main road across the river that had trucks rumbling down it all night. A group of 4 guests opened our room's sliding door and tried to enter as they must have believed that was the entrance to the guesthouse. It was not possible to lock this sliding door, for security or to quieten the sound of people talking at the tables outside the front of the shop. The shop had a loud bell/buzzer that kept sounding, as guests kept walking in and out of the shop. Guests also kept using the side entrance to the shop which was opposite our room's entrance screen. There were no curtains in our room, so the light from the corridor and the light from the shop which shone through the shop's glass-paned door into our room, meant our room stayed lit up. Guests staying in the upstairs rooms would've had a very different experience. For the 11 guests staying that night, there was one bath/shower room which opened directly out into the laundry room that also had the only sink for guests to use. This meant that if someone was using the bathroom, the sink was out of action. I waited for a long time to have a shower as one of the guests had a bath! In the evening, as the bathroom was occupied, some of the women guests and I had to use the tiny sink in the corner of the men's urinal to brush our teeth. This smelled strongly of urine. There was only one shared toilet. In the morning, we went to the nearby public toilets for our morning ablutions as it was easier. Dinner was basic, especially for the price. Our Japanese curry barely had any meat, just a few fatty scraps. Overall, the lack of privacy, inadequate facilities, and relentless noise made for an uncomfortable stay.

掃除がしっかりしてあり、襖で仕切られた和室でしたが、隣りを部屋が空室なので、物音が気にならなかった。 ただ、隣りの家になるのか、隣家のガレージで夕方からBBQをして、7〜8人が10時くらいまで談笑しているのが、とてもうるさかった。

Good, but a little inconvenient
The guestroom is fine. It is inconvenient because the bathroom and shower are downstairs and on the otherside of the guesthouse. it wasn't ideal, but it functioned. The location IS perfect however.

Great start off
Accom is right at the start of the Nakahechi trail and is just outside the Takijiri Oji. The surrounding is a gem with a river that runs opposite it. The accom is however basic. It is still decent as I was the only guest but it may be troublesome as there is only 1 toilet and 1 bath. Dinner and lunchbox is doable but breakfast is awesome and very filling for the long hike ahead.

Hello, kon nichiwa I m very disapointed about the meals i had in the place i booked by your website. Evening time, i was served a bowl of soup with only potatoes in it, then a small cup of vegetables, a dish with a small fried fish and a small potatoe fried, a cup of noodles ,no dessert. When i ask fir dessert i was answered that the prices got high and there was no. But i was eating in a shop when there are some sweets ! Morning time i had some coffee in a glass with ice, could get some more when asking, no tea proposed ,tbreakfast was a bit better, but only made of cheap food, banana, egg and 2 pieces of bread. I heard the price of the room is 8800 y, so that makes more than 5000 for the meal, except your commission. This is defintely too much paid for what i had. Moreover internet is really low about 7 mbips and often not working. So paying 14500 y is really extremelly too much The only good point to tell is that the owner brought me to a supermarket to buy some food for the next days travelling. I think it s not correct and would like to get at least 3000 y back.

We stayed here for the first night of our Kumano Kodo trip to set off the next day for the Nakahechi hike. The host was very hospitable and served a good dinner and breakfast in his store. There's a friendly cat in the home to play with. The trailhead is steps away from the guesthouse and there's a small teahouse right next to it serving tea, coffee and sweets.

A Cozy and Unique Start to Our Journey
This accommodation was the perfect place to begin our trip. It had a charm and character that set it apart from the usual inns we’ve stayed at. There was something about the atmosphere – warm, inviting, and just a little different – that made it a memorable part of our journey. Perfect starting point
The location of the Guesthouse/ Ryokan is directly at the starting point of the Kumano Kodo and very close to the bus station. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Since the restaurant/shop is quite busy the room on the ground floor is not quiet before 10 pm.

Really good
Everything was excellent. In the evening a lovely man from a local Taiko (traditional Japanese drums) came in and asked if I wanted to take part in their lesson/practice that same evening. I did (I was the only one!) and it was awesome! Really recommend it (cost 3000 yen for 1,5-2 hours). There is a poster advertising this in the guesthouse shop. Give it a go when you’re there!

The start of the trail was the end for me.
This location was so nice. I was greeted by the innkeeper and his cat. The innkeeper prepared dinner for me. I will admit that it was premade, but I still liked it. The rice was made just before I ate it. Breakfast was a similar story, but I still liked it. The best part was the cat. He is quite affectionate and doesn't mind being petted or sitting with people.

No frills guesthouse
We reserved Kodo no Mori because all accomodations in Takahara were fully booked. The place is a store and a luggage transfer as well. Meals (dinner and breakfast) are not cooked, but are decent bento boxes. Bathroom is in common with the guys managing the place. The location is right at the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. This is a no frills place, ok if you have no particular edpectations.

Authentic experience
We had a great time at Kodo-no-Mori Anchan. The cat, Nya, became my best friend for a couple of hours. The people were super sweet, brought our luggage to our final destination (for a fee obv.) and were happy to chat with us. Would book again in a heartbeat.

Comfortable and quiet
Before we started hiking, we stayed here. It’s right on the trail and close to the Kumano Kodo information center. The host was friendly enough but didn’t talk to us much. He didn’t talk to us about his cat at all and it surprised us because it can open doors. It was a very friendly cat and likes to snuggle. The room was very basic with two futons. Our service was pretty good!

お宿には猫のみゃーちゃん(17歳♀)がいます。とても人懐っこくて、なでなでを要求してきたり、夜中に部屋に侵入して私の布団の上で丸くなって寝始めたりと愛嬌たっぷりでした。他にもお宿には水槽が多く、色々な熱帯魚が泳いでいました。生き物が大好きなご主人さんのようです。 この日の宿泊者は私1人だったのですが、大変よくして頂きました。どうもありがとうございました。

Excellent location, outsourced meals
Couldn’t find a room in Takahara, so we booked this hotel, which we didn’t mind because it’s located at the very beginning of the first trailhead. Friendly hosts, but all of the meals, with the exception of a few food items, were outsourced to a third-party provider and the food was not very good—dinner, breakfast and the bento. The worst meals of our trip. The two guys running this inn really need to learn how to cook, or at least find a better place to buy their food for the guests. The price of the lodging does not reflect the value of the stay & the meals. Most of the other places we stayed at offered much better, home-cooked meals and bento at a cheaper price. I would not stay here again.

「あんちゃん」木田さんの人柄が良かったです。
「あんちゃん」木田さんの人柄は、面倒見の良い方とお見受けしました。田辺から瀧尻まででかなり足に負担が来ていましたので、翌日に「ゆっくりゆっくり登って」とのアドバイス、名刺を頂きもしもの時のサポートは心強かったです。民宿なので施設面は想定通りで、可もなく不可もない「普通」とさせていただきました。食事は、恐らく契約されているお弁当屋から取り寄せたものだと思いますが、しっかりご飯とおかずが詰められ量的には満足の範囲です、また、富田川で釣れたばかりの鮎の塩焼き、茄子に煮びたしがあり木田さんのオリジナルもあり、トータルとしてはOKでした。1日汚れた衣類の洗濯費用は500円。店舗が隣接しているので飲料、みかん、押印帳を店舗で購入できることは便利でした。

It's *the* option if you want to overnight right at the start of Takijiri. The food tastes like it was a pre-bought bento, the same with lunch. It's not going to be a memorable stay beyond facilitating the easiest morning start of the section from Takijiri.

Good short stay

The location was easily accessible and no additional navigation was required. The room had a splendid view of the bridge and Takijiri-oji. The dinner was great with a hearty portion, and the breakfast and lunch box were well balanced as well. The host was down to earth and approachable. Right at the start of Takijiri-Oji. We LOVED the sweet cat Mya. She slept on my bed with me and I was very happy. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch boxes were good. Nothing too fancy but were filling and yummy. The accommodations were very simple and right at the start of the trail.

Great starting point
This guesthouse is right next to the starting point of the trail. The owner is very friendly. The room was nice and everything was clean. Food was served in the shop, which was fun. The food itself was really good. As was breakfast and the bento. The owner has a luggage transport service too. I booked this for my 4 days of walking in advance. Very happy with that as well. Great place to start my journey!

Welcoming hospitality and convenient location
We enjoyed a warm welcome and lovely dinner with trout from a pond on the property. The room was adequate, although the sleeping mats were on the thinner side so might challenge people with back or hip problems. A good starting point for walking as you are right at the trailhead start.

Great host and very convenient location
Kida San is warm and considerate. We stayed for 2 nights and he prepared different menu to ensure our dinner set were the first night. Begin an avid anglers, the fishes he caught and cooked were delicious. He also suggested a different route for us after knowing that we planned to hike and returned on the same route for 2 days in a row. The location is great, near the start of the Takahara route, could not ask for more.

部屋とお風呂
①部屋はフローリングで、座布団1枚と布団のみ。何もないので大変驚きました。せめてテーブルとティッシュペーパーがあったらと思いました。後でわかったのですが、同じ料金で、和室でテレビ、テーブル等があったという人がいました。長旅で、とてもくつろげるようなところではありませんでした。 ➁洗面所には、洗ってたたんであるタオルやバスタオルがかごの中に高く積み上げられていましたが、ごわごわしていてびっくりいたしました。せめてタオルは、袋に入っている物を用意していただきたいと思いました。 ③お弁当はもう少しお勉強をしてほしいと思います。 ④ご夫婦とも気さくな方で、出発時にお見送りをしてくださいました。

大変お世話になりました！一人でしたので下の６畳間でしたが不似合いな位の大型テレビも有りエアコン完備で快適でした。ニャアちゃんが勝手に戸を開けて部屋に入ってくるのには驚きましたが大変人懐っこい子で正にアイドル。癒されました。スタッフさんも朗らかで、中辺路の相談にも丁寧に対応して頂き、助かりました。 翌朝もニャアが来て布団の上で気持ち良く寝てたので布団を畳むのが遅れ、失礼しました（苦笑）。※タオル、バスタオルは、しっかり柔軟剤が効いていてフッカフカでした。 最後にお弁当、美味しく頂きました。

Friendly place with a perfect location
You can't find a better location than this. If you want to start your hiking right away, this is a great place to stay, as you literally walk out the front door and start the Kumano Kodo. The room was very clean and comfortable and the owners were very friendly and helpful.

Warm rooms, warm hosts,
Arriving on a cold and rainy spring day, we very much appreciated the lovely warm room and sitting by the stove in the gift shop. Midori-san prepared a lovely dinner with fish that she caught herself. She also makes the best coffee for breakfast. Perhaps the single most unique factor of this minshuku is Mya the cat, who made our stay unforgettable.

Warm reception to start kumano kodo
Midori Is a wonderful host. She was so nice to wait for us at the bus stop and to bring us to her house. We arrived already in the dark so her help has been very appreciated. The house is very familiar and warm. We had all the comfort we needed and the food has been excellent. The best Japanese hot pot ever had. I can only strongly suggest to stop there. If u wish starting hiking early and to arrive to nonaka area instead of stopping in takahara this is the place to stay. Being a shop u may also find last minute things to buy before trekking.

A good place to stay at the start of your hike across the trail.
This guesthouse is well located at the bus stop from Tanabe, for the hike. It's also the only place to stay but we found it overall very good plus the proprietor handled the luggage transport for us.

Great place to stay before starting the Nakahechi hike
The guest house is located right at the start of the trail, so it's a great place to be when starting the trail in the early morning. The walk from Takajiri to Chikatsuyu is tough at around 13K but achievable with moderate fitness. We were glad to have attempted it rather than stay in Takahara (although the morning views in Takahara would have no doubt been fantastic). The hosts are lovely, and Midori is very helpful and welcoming and immediately put us at ease about the coming days of hiking and travelling. The food provided was also of a very high standard, so I recommended opting for dinner, breakfast and the lunch box to take on the hike.

Great spot to start your walk
Located at the very start of the Kumano walk, you couldn't get any closer! Great location to get off earlier the next morning. Midori is a wonderful friendly host and makes you feel at home. The food was delicious and the lunch box she provided was the best we had on the trail! She can also organise luggage transfers for you.

As a transition is ok
The location is awesome, just opposite the tourist case. The room is small and clean. Meals are more general and barely enough to eat. The crab that the director himself has caught is very delicious. It is recommended to try it.

Very nice room and hospitable family
The tatami room was very comfortable and cozy. Family running the place very warm and friendly. The only minus is that there is only one shared toilet and wash room. The location is very convenient, right next to the begining of the trail, and to my opinion a much nicer lodging option than staying in Tanabe.

Great location and friendly hosts
Great location to start the Kumano Kodo hike and warm hospitality. There is only one bathroom, toilet and wash basin so may be busy during peak hours. Guest rooms are on second floor and stairway is steep. I found a big centipede in my tatami room, maybe because they are so close to the forest. Meals are good and wholesome.

Good start to the hike
Overall, it was a good stay at Kodo-no-Mori Anchan, with the hosts providing superb service and decent rooms. Futons were slightly too thin compared to the other places we've stayed at. Dinner was delicious and served in a large portion. Packed lunch was good. Anchan also runs a store where hikers can purchase items they've forgotten to bring for the trek. Accidentally left behind some clothes and was surprised to find it along the trail at one of the crossroads (THANK YOU Anchan!)

This was a great place from which to start the hike and to stay the night before. The evening meal, breakfast and lunch box were all excellent and the host friendly. We bought two bamboo walking sticks from here and were grateful for that purchase every day of the walk. The cat is lovely too. Unfortunately we arrived to late to go to the Kumano visitor centre across the road and the chance to soak in the history of the location but we heard good things and it is probably worth arriving early enough to do this and make an early start the next day.

Great location, basic room
The location was great for the start of the trail. The room was very small and basic with futon and bedding on wooden floors. As the walls are very thin the neighbouring rooms occupants could be heard/seen at any time. It was quite cold so better bedding (also prepared in advance by the host not the guests) could be provided for the price. The cat was wonderful addition and the hosts were very welcoming. Nice start to the Kumano Kodo
This location makes it easy to get an early start on the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trail. Traditional japanese room and shared bathroom were good. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all fine as well. We didn't see too much of the hosts but when we did they were helpful. Good stay!

Excellent location near bus stop in a beautiful, quiet setting

Good mood and good service
The room has the basis, but the futons are very thin. You also need to be a cat person to stay here. The owners cat could open the door into our room and came to cuddle and woke us up at 5 in the morning - which I thought was cute, but my boyfriend is not a cat person. Trail head
Handy, but pretty basic lodge near the Kumano Kodo trailhead. The couple running the guesthouse were friendly and fine, but with 10 or so foreigners crammed into a small establishment they were too busy to offer much in the way of hospitality. Not so much the normal minshuku experience you hope for in japan, more like a hostel. The food lunchbox was delicious and substantial, but the dinner was a pretty basic hotpot. Hikers might be better considering the lovely town of takahara for their first night.

A good way to start the Kumano Kodo.
This accommodation is at the trailhead of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trail and owned by a friendly Japanese couple. It is great to stay here and then begin the trail the next day early in the morning. We had an upstairs room which was very large but it smelled a bit of cigarette smoke (the owner is a smoker) and the carpet looked worn and had a few stains. There was a bit of line up for the bathroom which is shared by all the guests. It is a tad noisy at night as ther were some people who stayed up late - just bring earplugs if you're sensitive to noise. There is also a very cute ginger cat who made it's home on my partner's futon! The dinner was a delicious hot pot which we enjoyed and we got the lunchbox which was very nice to eat the next day on our hike.

I felt so at home with the beautiful hosts at Kodo-no-Mori Anchan. You're welcomed like family. This is a great night's stop if you want to commence the Kumano Kodo first thing the next morning. It's peaceful opposite the river, alongside the Takijiri-oji shrine. Their help with my luggage shuttle at last minute notice was instrumental...I can't thank them enough. I'm grateful for every moment I spent staying there.

Perfect starting location next to trailhead... but a little rough around the edges.
Midori and Anchan run a convenient guest house next to the Kumano Kodo trailhead at Tajikiri. The dinner, breakfast, and lunch box are good, as is the luggage service. The room is okay, but after being in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, it can feel quite dated and rough. The shared bath isn't my favorite but it works fine, with plenty of towels. This is a good fit for young hostel types but after you've gotten used to 4 star hotels in the cities, it's a bit too much like camping.

Early start from Takijiri-oji
Kodo-no-Mori Anchan is located right next to Takijiri-oji - the beginning point of the Nakahechi route. If you wish to start the Nakahechi route early in the morning, than Kodo-no-Mori Anchan is perfect! You can chose the time when you would like to have your breakfast - breakfast can be served as early as 6am! And if you wish, you can also order a bento box for the go - really delicious!

滝尻から継桜まで歩き、本来であれば継桜や近露で宿をとりたかったけれども宿がとれず、こちらに宿泊することになりましたが、正解でした。とても快適でした。朝、宿のかたに御挨拶をしたら、「こちらに戻ってこられるのであれば荷物預けていいですよ」とおっしゃっていただきました。とても助かりました。また、滝尻に戻るバスに間に合わなかったら連絡を下さいとおっしゃって下さいました（幸いにもバスに間に合いました）。早朝出発にも対応していただきました。とてもおすすめの宿です。

Basic room but perfect location
The room was large and clean but basic, and the shared bathroom and toilet were down a steep staircase on the ground floor. But location is perfect: right at the very start of the Kumano Kodo, and the owners were very friendly. Warning: there isn't really anything else there (just one shop) so make sure to take some food with you.

A great place to stay!
Our hosts were simply perfect. They were welcoming, food was great (on space, but also the bento boxes) and they helped us plan ahead of our trek with luggage transport service for a few days at a reasonable price.

Great place close to the river and friendly hosts!
This is a great place to stay before starting the trek! The owners are great and lovely. It is close to ricer which you can hear when you sleep. The only downside was that the person below us smoked and it wafted into our room all night.

Very nice place to start Kumano Kodo early in the morning
The guests are really welcoming and nice. Our bus was arriving a bit late for the area (19h10) but they agreed to wait for us. We had a very good diner and a nice lunch box to eat the next day. The room is a nice japanese style room and everything was very clean!

Perfect location at the start of the Kumano Kodo trail
This minshuku is located right across from the bus stop and the visitor centre (which I unfortunately could not visit since it closed at 5pm) and the start of the trail. The guest room is nothing fancy, but perfectly fine. Dinner was very nice, breakfast was Western style and the lunch box great. Hosts spoke good English.

Very goood.
Comfortable,clean,close to bus stop, and very friendly and helpful. Tea was a Japanese hot pot which was very nice. Start of the walk, however we caught a bus to Takahara and started there. This was easy to do. Very small village. Has one little shop which is also at the accomodation.

Perfect location with very friendly hosts
Tatami room with enough space to sleep and have your things out. Liked it. Fun couple runs this place and they'll do anything for your, including fixing very early breakfast. Much appreciated, especially because the hiking pack was good. I liked the food very much. I had a fresh night - because I didn't realize I could turn on the heating. Would go back here. It's close to the bus stop and right at the trail head.

Very friendly people
We stayed our first night here before beginning the Kumano Kodo and they made us feel home. The food was delicious and we slept very well. It was only a bit too cold at the room but with the blankets we had no problems.

Midori and Anchan were the perfect host. So friendly and welcoming and as a single female traveller they were the perfect people to stay with before heading off on the Kumano Kodo. The meal at night with the hosts and other guests was so much fun. I really love these people and would love to come back again to seee them. Highly recommended.

Lovely people and great fun.
This place is a bit more basic than some but very clean and comfortable. Our hosts were great company and we enjoyed sharing a few cups of sake! A great start to our trip and right on the start of the trail.

Perfect location for start of hike
Excellent guesthouse with amazing hosts. We had a really nice night chatting and drinking with the Japanese couple who run this guesthouse. We had two lovely meals and a good packed lunch. Perfect start to our hike.

Very homely accommodation
In this guesthouse we were basically sharing the owner’s house so it was an excellent way to see how Japanese families live. The dinner and breakfast were excellent and our host gave us very helpful advice about the local buses.

Great Host & Location
This is the best location to stay for a night at Takijiri & it's located just opposite the Kumano Kodo Kan Pilgrimage Centre. The host were awesome & even offered me a ride to Takahara the following day. They've a cute souvenir shop side by side to the guesthouse.

Homely family style accomodation
Place is run by a very friendly couple. Location is right at the start of the trail. there is virtually nothing else in the town, but as we were finishing the trail at Takijiri the location was very convenient. It is like staying at someone's house, rather than at a hotel etc

We started our Kumano Kodo walk by staying at Kodo-no-Mori Anchan and we could not have had a better time. From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed by the hosts. They were incredibly helpful and attentive to our every need. We were travelling as a family, myself, my wife and our two sons aged 16 and 14. Our eldest son got sick during the night and did not sleep much due to an earache and tonsilitis. We were to walk approximatly 18.5 km to our next destination on this day. My wife and I decided that I would walk with our 14 year old son, while she would catch the bus and go to the next accommodation with our sick son. What our host then did was amazing and very generous. He drove my wife and sick son to a doctor, waited for them to be seen by the doctor. Our son then needed to get medication and he drove them to a pharmacy and helped get the prescription. After this he drove them both back to his home and let our son sleep for a few hours as he had not slept that night. After this he then drove my wife and my son to the next accommodation. He spent his whole day looking after my wife and sick son and when my wife asked if she could pay him, he refused. He did all of that out of the generosity of his heart. Incredible. Thanks to his help our son was able to recover quickly. We will never forget his generosity and it is one of the reasons we love Kumano Kodo so much.
