This place was not nice after the previous one. The sheet were made out of plastic and the matrass was hard. We could smell the cigarettes from the people smoking in front of the door. Food was not tasty and check out at 9.30 am was too early we had to rush after we have finished our tuna guided tour with Stella locals.

Friendly hosts
I was lost and couldn’t find the lodging because it was dark outside. My Google map wasn’t very helpful. I asked a young man walking his dog if he knew the location of the lodge and he said I was there only I was in the back of the lodge so he took me through a shortcut. Turns out he was the owner’s son. Only thing that was weird at this lodging is the way they set up the meal tables facing their TV. I felt like I was in a classroom and chose not to eat there the second night.

Overall fine, but having some problems
The location is great. It's quite close to both the bus terminal and the nearest bus stop. There's a convenience store just across the street. Their guest rooms are of appropriate size and well-equipped. However, the only drawback is that the sound insulation is a bit poor, and you can still hear the sounds in the corridor. Overall, their bathroom is indeed quite nice, spacious and clean. However, the time limit is a rather significant issue, as it can only be used before 9 p.m. They also have quite a lot of dishes, but the taste is a bit off. Overall, it's not bad and also provides temporary luggage storage after checking out.

Excelent

Perfect end for a perfect hiking trip
Reaching Kii-Katsuura after several days in the woods felt great and staying your first night in Kosakaya sure gave a high boost to this feeling of accomplishment. The staff was friendly, the tatami room spacious and the bath very nice and relaxing. Strolling through the empty streets of Kii-Katsuura and going home to Kosakaya felt like going home. Thank you!

A disappointment at the end of the travel
It was our last destination but sadly we had to conclude the travel with a disappointment. The meal was horrible and we didnt feel the same hospitality we had during the past stays. This minshuku was rather business like place. We looked for a good maguro as Katsuura is famous for. However the served maguro was obviously not the good part. It had lot of gristle, tendon, or suji. The rice was horrible quality. Seems like they serve very old rice. It was the only place our we didnt feel appetite after the walk.

Friendly staffs and comfortable. The only thing I would suggest is to review the quality of food they serve. It was too much for one person especially Europeans who are not used to Hugh meals in the evening. Maybe can give guests the option to ask more so the food is not wasted.

Confortable and strategic
Nachi katsura is a great place to stay after arriving in Nachi taisha. The hotel is clean, the meals are very good, the onsen is nice. The only disadvantages are futon and pillow too thin and the onsen timetable: it is only open in the afternoon

Well located close to the station. Unfortunately the room was not very comfortable, a very thin futon and windows straight onto street, which meant we had to keep the curtains closed the whole stay. The food was incredibly challenging and not particularly well made, if we stayed again we would skip the meal plan and try some of the local restaurants.

Reasonable Japanese-style lodging with a small onsen tub
Great service and decent room. The onsen tub could probably fit 4 guys at the most. It was disappointing that we could not use the showers in the morning--the facilities opened at 1 p.m. I was grateful for the washing machine and dryer.

Tuna time!
The standout feature was the quantity, quality and excellent preparation of the tuna served at dinner. Multiple dishes featuring the fish, all well prepared. The room was clean and comfortable (small) with shared bathrooms/loos. Location is a short walk from the station.

Very disappointing
Compared to the other accomondations on the Kumano Trek this Minshuku was a failure. The food was below average, for alkoholic beverages the Host does not have a price list, but the demands twice the average prices. The futon beds are cheap and thin. Only the onsen was worth the overnight price.

Comfortable, modern and inviting
This was a really well-run and clean hostel style minshuku. We were very impressed with how clean and well-maintained everything was! The shared bathrooms were spotless and there was no awkwardness with the co-ed spaces at all! The meals were huge, almost TOO huge! The hosts were very friendly! The rooms were spotless. The only complaint is that these were the thinnest mattresses and pillow on our trip, so it wasn't the most comfortable sleep, but the room itself was very comfortable and well-thought out. We really liked this place. Very friendly.

Basic accommodation, but very clean.
This is a basic guesthouse with thin futon mats for sleeping. The shared bathroom was very clean, but you can only shower/use Onsen in the afternoon, so no morning shower. The food was well prepared, but largely consisted of tuna prepared several different ways (tuna is the specialty in Katsuura). The staff were helpful.

We didn’t like it
This Minshuku is a few minutes from the station, and there is a convenience store right across the street. However, we didn’t like it. It lacks personality. To speak to the owner, you have to ring a bell in front of a closed window. We had back pain and asked for extra futons – at the other Minshukus, that was standard, but here they charged extra. At least the owner gave me a discount. The room was very basic and somewhat lacking in character. After a brief explanation of what the food was, no one appeared again during the meal. You couldn’t even thank them for the food . The meals were prepared without much care and there was far too much of it. The quality was much better at the other Minshukus. We wouldn’t stay at this Minshuku again.

The Major Disappointment of Our Trip
I will break down our experience into different aspects to explain our disappointment. After five long days of walking, we finally arrived at the hotel. However, upon reaching the reception, we found that all the service windows were closed, and we had to raise our voices to get someone’s attention to check us in. This is a clear lack of customer service, especially considering how expensive the accommodation is. The rooms are in a traditional Japanese style, with futons that were extremely thin—so much so that it felt as if we were sleeping on the bare floor. Compared to futons we've used at other accommodations, these were by far the worst. My wife and I ended up stacking one futon on top of another, sacrificing space to achieve a minimum level of comfort after the exhausting hikes of the previous days. The food experience was equally disappointing. We ended up buying food from the Family Mart across the street just to have something enjoyable to eat. While we understand that this hotel caters primarily to local visitors, serving cold fish and fermented natto for breakfast is not a pleasant experience for international tourists; we were left hungry. Dinner, on the other hand, was overly abundant and ended up wasted. The quality was subpar, featuring a large, cold fish for each person that was simply unappetizing. We couldn't eat most of it. To add to the frustration, we checked online and discovered that the price of the rooms was half of what we were charged. We are unsure if this discrepancy is due to fees imposed by the Kumano Kodo website, or if the hotel raises prices knowing that tourists have little choice but to pay. Because of this experience, we will recommend to all our friends not to include any meal plans when booking hotels in this area.

Does the job
This place wasn’t as accommodating as other places. Baths only available 1500-2100 which was really restrictive especially as one of the larger accommodations I stayed in. I arrived at 2pm and wasn’t able to check in before 3pm despite my luggage having been taken up to the tatami room. Wasn’t able to access space to rest or eat own food which was disappointing. Shared bathroom facilities clean and comfortable, room not set up as well for use other than to sleep.

Great Accommodation
Fantastic accommodation. The host was very kind and explains things in details. The location is great - very close to the convenient store and 5 min walk from the main site of the town and bus terminal. The facilities were very clean, organized, and well-run. Highly recommended!

Nice Minshuku, lovely staff and tasteful food!
This place was our final stop after the trek and it was great to stay there. It's about a five minutes walk from JR station. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a nice public bath, the rooms are spacious and modern and the food is awesome. We had a great time at this place. I can absolutely recommend this accommodation. A dissappointing Minshuku!
This was the only place where the owner took advantage of the situation of being a foreigner. He charged extra money for yukata and towel. We stayed a second night and booked with booking.com which was cheaper than Kumano Travel. So he made us pay an up-price of Yen 8000 so that we could stay in the same rooms for two nights! The washroom and toilets were for men and women - The bath was only open afternoon and evening, no possibility to wash in the morning! The futons were so thin that one could hardly sleep on the tatami.

Absolutely perfect
The food was amazing. The reception and service spot on. The onsen bath space was brilliant. As this was my last night on the trail before heading back to Kyoto, I was so pleased with the stay at Onsen Minshuku Kosakaya. The location was easy to get to and across the street was a small mini mart which had an atm and snacks. The train, bus station, and restuarants were all less than 10 minutes away. Sitting at a table with chairs was also a nice treat since I had been sitting on the ground a lot. This was a great stay.

A quite nice no frills stay
This was the final night on my Kumano Kodo trip, and I was pretty tired. A little apprehensive given some of the reviews I had read online, however I’m pleased to report that this is a perfectly comfortable little hotel. It’s no frills, but doesn’t pretend to be anything else, My room was spacious, had an ensuite shower and toilet, and yukata and towels in the room, no extra charge. The mattress and pillow was a quite thin, but i still slept fine. The meal was plentiful with great variety and all dishes were delicious. The onsen is more like a large bath tub, but it was hot and relaxing. The hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. They explained everything in good enough English. I had to leave early before the breakfast sitting, so they made me a takeaway box of flavoured rice balls, tea and fruit, and helped me organise a taxi to squeeze in a trip to Nachi falls before the first bus (so i could get back in time for my 8:49am train). I’m really happy with the stay here.

Host was very curt! There were mosquitoes everywhere, beds were very thin. Onsen opens from 3-9pm, the only time it is possible to have a shower in the onsen wash area. There are no private bathrooms at all for someone who wants to have a shower at other times or in private. Breakfast was terrible - overcooked fish and boiled egg, nato and rice.

Walkable distance from Kii Katsuura station. Very generous meals. The host was very kind to help me arrange a visit to the doctor for my toe injury at a hospital though it was kinda late and close to the hospital's closing time.

Great place close to the bus/train station. Convenient grocery store across the street. Our host was really friendly and helpful. Shared bathroom facilities were clean and well kept. Onsen and showers only open after 3 pm ( so no morning showers)

A easy place to relax with a very helpful host

料理は美味しかったですが、量が私には多すぎでした。満腹で手を付けることが出来ないお皿も。もったいないと感じました。 お風呂の掃除が少し甘いかなと感じました（お風呂の底が少しザラザラしていた。汚れかどうか不明ですが）。 廊下等にマスク着用をお願いする張り紙がありましたが、民宿の従業員の方の中にはマスク着用をしていない方も見掛けました。5類に移行しているのでマスク着用をしていなかったのかもしれませんが、張り紙をしているのならば、従業員の方が率先してマスク着用をすべきかなと感じました。

Working person's Minshuku
We arrived on a Friday night at Onsen Minshuku Kosakaya and were the only guests. This Minshuku appears to cater to folks working in the area and visiting youth sports teams. Of the places we stayed, it felt the least connected to the Kumano. Food was rustic and centered on tuna, with our dinner including maguro sashimi, tuna tail, tuna heart, and a fried tuna dish. We were a little overwhelmed with the portions (much larger than most we had on the trip) and the lack of variety. The rooms were spare and the sleeping mats some of the thinest we experienced. As a result our night sleep was not the best. This is the one location we can not really recommend.

Convenient location
Reception and check in was good-- the proprietor is cheerful and informative. My room was clean and had all expected basics. I had only signed up for breakfast which was satisfactory. Smoking is prohibited in this inn, but unfortunately, the odor of smokers outside in the parking area came through my open window. The best characteristic of this minshuku is it's convenience and proxmity to the train station-- just a 5 minute walk straight down the street.

Friendly owner, disappointing food and room
It seems we had one of the better rooms, since we had our own toilet and bath. That was fine. The bedding felt a bit cheap; as felt everything in this accomodation. The food was very dissapointing; the town is known for its tuna, but I think we got the worst cut of the tuna. It was very chewy. The same goes for the rest of the meal. It felt very cheap and it wasn't particularly good. I'd avoid this place.

Convenient location
The room is clean and the dinner and breakfast were sumptuous. Location is near the JR and bus station. Very convenient to take bus to Nachisan and back to Osaka. Town was a little quite and perhaps, tourism was just starting to pick up after the 3 years of C19.

A good deal in Katsuura
The hostel is not easy to find but the staff are extremely welcoming, and the little onsen is welcome after a busy day. The room is perfect for those who are used to the Japanese style, a little safer for Europeans :-) Nevertheless the kindness of the staff gives all its charm to the place.

Centrally located Onsen with a lively host
Onsen Minshuku Kosakaya is run by a very friendly and funny owner. He made sure we had everything we need and kept us company during our meals. The room was tidy and comfy with a shared indoor onsen. The food was plentiful and an experience, thanks to interesting dishes like fermented soybeans.

When we checked in, the lodging was full and owner Mr Kenji Kosaka and staff were very busy. We understood all 16 rooms in this lodging were full during that day. However they still accede to some of our little requests happily. Hence we rate 5 stars for service!

Great food at Minshuku Kosakaya!
LOCATION: Minshuku Kosakaya is a 5-10 minute walk from the bus station/train station. It was easy to find and you pass by a shopping arcade on the way to the minshuku. There is also a convenience store near the minshuku. ROOM: The room where I stayed was a simple room that can accommodate two people. There was an area (similar to a genkan) where you can place your luggage so no need to worry about damaging the tatami mats. FUTON: The futon was a bit thin for me so it was quite uncomfortable. However, I was still able to sleep well because it was quiet. ROOM AMENITIES: The room had the usual small table, kettle, tea cups, a TV, airconditioner, some hangers. MINSHUKU FACILITIES: The bathroom is shared but spacious. Guests are provided with the usual , toothbrush and toothpaste, bath towel. Toilets and sinks are shared but there are enough for all guests. FOOD: This was the most enjoyable part for me. The Kosaka family prepared a lot of good dishes using tuna. It was really a wonderful dining experience. Both dinner and breakfast were really enjoyable. STAFF: Kenji-san was very sociable. He chatted with the guests and paid attention to the needs of the guests. ありがとうございます。

5 minutes walk from train station
We're lucky in that our rooms were downstairs hence with en suite. Apparently all the rooms upstairs are room only with shared bath/toilets. The in-door onsen is reasonably small - just like a super-size bathtub.

This was at the end of my Kumano Nakahechi walk and was an excellent place to relax and have a good soak in a hot bath. Room was pretty small, but only needed it to crash out so not really an issue, just that it was small compared to other places I had stayed. Overall very good place to stay.

Unbelivable delicious Dinner
This was my second time staying at Minshuku Kosakaya in Kii-Katsuura. Really frendly and helpful family! The food they cook is amazing - and the really don't hold back with the amount of the food! I was happy to be able to stay there again :)

Bring earplugs and good luck with the bathroom
For the same price, you could get better value in Kyoto and Osaka, with your own bathroom, towels and yukata or pyjamas provided. Another major problem is that the room has poor sound insulation, everyone opening or locking the room doors, walking along the corridor with the Crocs provided to get to the toilets is noisy. I read the reviews and had my earplugs. The toilets and wash basins are unisex, so do take note if you’re uncomfortable. There are two common bathrooms, the big one is what you see on the website but the small one has only 2 shower stations and one basin. They alternate the bathrooms between male and female everyday. So if your stay happens to be day when your gender is supposed to bath in the small bathroom, it is likely to be crowded or even have to queue for your turn during peak hours. The bathroom is so small that when one open the door to the bath area, one would hit the person washing at the station nearest to the door, note that there are only two anyway. The meals are sumptuous will have fish, raw, fried, etc. Some I find a little too salty and meant to go with beer which the Japanese guests tend to do. The owners are nice and friendly, but if you rate the accommodation for its facilities and value, it is below average.

Nice hotel on a good location
The hotel (I would not call it a minshuku) is located close to the train and busstation and has parking available for guests who arrive by car. The hotel has it's own onsen/hot bath and a large dining room. Dinner and breakfast were very good and served on high tables and chairs.

Actually it is not a minshuku but a real hotel, focused on groups and not suited for individual travelers. Very noisy and unpersonal. Moreover it seems extremely expensive and the rate quality/price therefore rather low. Especially we didn't like that we had to pay in addition for the towels and yukatas : it is our first time in Japan. Positive point : the host is nice and sympathetic

Friendly, kind and delicious local experience!
Onsen Minshuku Kosakaya was one of the best accommodations where I stayed during my trip - and believe me, all of the accomodations were great! The owner is super friendly and patient! I can speak and understand basic japanese, so he communicated with me only in japanese but really slowly and clear so that I was able to understand everything. He really supported me to learn and better understand japanese. He could of course also speak grat english and asked me for my opinion on some of the terms he was using. Breakfast and especially lunch were a feast. For lunch there was maguro in all possible variations - so that I was able to try all aspects of the famous and fresh katsuura maguro. They recommended me a restaurant for lunch which was also delicious and a great experience.

民宿というよりはホテルといった外観で、館内もとても綺麗でした。よく手入れされた合宿所という感じです。実際宿泊した際もかなりの大人数が合宿を行っていましたが、宿の方が十分に気を遣ってくださったのはありがたかったです。お風呂は２つありますが、家庭用のお風呂のお湯が温泉、といったイメージが近いと思います。 チェックアウト時、対応できる方がいなくて待たされました。お忙しそうでしたしそれはいいんですが、待たせたことに一切の謝罪がないこと、更には合宿以外の一般客は2組しかいない状態でも宿泊代金が支払い済みなのか把握しておらず、お客に聞く。個人的にはこれはいかがなものかと思いました。 共用のお手洗いは廊下と面してます。男性用の奥に個室が並んでいますが、個室の扉以外、廊下との仕切りを含めて扉はありませんので、気になる方は注意が必要です。

Big new minshuku
This is a larger minshuku, with a feel of a small motel rather than the smaller ones along the Kumano Kodo route. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Note that the baths are only open in the late afternoon to night, so no bathing in the morning! Meals were of good quality featuring bluefin tuna, the fish this fishing port is most well known for. Visit the tuna auction at 7 am at the nearby port and take the free ferry boat service to use the cave onsen overlooking the pacific ocean at a nearby hotel.

Welcoming Minshuku
We arrived a little earlier than standard but our host soon had us in our room, which was very clean and comfortable. We had a room with toilet and en-suite - not sure how we would have done without. The downside was that the whole house was not very soundproof and there were a few noisy guests who were not very thoughtful or aware of others. The breakfast was a bit unusual. Nevertheless, recommended.

Fantastic Stay in Katsuura
Very well located near Katsuura Station. This minshuku is modern, super clean and spotless. The friendly staff create a lively vibe and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the end of our Kumano journey. We didn't take dinner as we opted to have dinner in one of the many restaurants nearby. Breakfast was a good Japanese style meal. Happy to recommend this minshuku.

Nice Japanese style accommodations
This was our second favorite accommodation throughout our stay in the Tanabe area. I was a bit full at supper and breakfast from eating too much already so I didn't enjoy the food as much as I could have, but my friend enjoyed it a lot.

About a 8 minute walk from the station. 24hr convenience store across the street. Rooms are on small side but very standard for Japan. One issue is that the baths are not open in the morning otherwise the facilities are great. The property also has a curfew.

Very poor hostel. Friendy guy at reception.
This minshuku (hostel) was very poor. The room was a tiny box, the futon was very thin, the breakfast also poor, and the showers are a common onsen only available at noon. And the prices is the same than other much better minshukus in the area. The guy at reception was very friendly, though.

The people running Minshuku Kosakaya were very kind and helpful. Unfortunately, the room we were given was located on the bottom floor looking at the parking lot. The bedding was terribly uncomfortable, and the food was not good. The stay was quite expensive for the value delivered.

The owners helped me to organise a luggage transfer service, despite the language barriers. It's very clean and modern - my room had a private bathroom and was very luxurious. The food wasn't bad.

We arrived a little early for check-in but received a very warm welcome. The baths were pleasant although not particularly atmospheric, and the food excellent for both dinner and breakfast. The hosts were very warm, and even gave us a memento of our stay with them.

Nice stay in beautiful Kii-Katsuura
This hotel is very conveniently located close to the train station. The host was very friendly, the room was clean, the only downside was that the walls are quite thin, and we heard a lot of noise from the other guests.

Very friendly service. Basic room was small and clean and had a bath in it. We would have used it if we had known that the onsen bath would be disappointing. It is not wood, it is like a big plastic bathtub, only a few people can fit in it. We would have preferred to use our in-room bath. The mattress was either too thin or hard, this was the only night that sleeping was uncomfortable. The location was much further from the train station than we initially thought, and we really needed the address. Google maps couldn't find it and we had to ask directions.

まだ新築間もないため、非常にきれいな建物で、お風呂についても広くゆったりとした気持ちで入浴できました。食事はマグロの珍しい部位がたくさん出て、量も多く大変満足にいただきました。朝は雨でしたのでご主人が車で駅まで送っていただき、また傘までいただき大変感謝をいたしました。ご主人曰く熊野ビューロさんからの紹介の日本人客は非常に少ないとのことで、非常にありがたいとのことでした、また熊野さんは非常にフォローが良いところですよともおっしゃっていました。「本当に良い民宿でした」

This minshuku was adequate for my night in Katsuura. The meals were of average quality and everything was very clean and new. I did feel a lack of atmosphere and the personal touch I had experienced at the aother guesthouses.

Extremely disappointing
It's by far the worst place I stayed at in Japan, even guesthouses are much better. I never had a room with so many mosquitos. The owner claims to have an onsen/hotspring, but it's just a normal ofuro/bath. The owner doesn't allow to have a shower in the morning. There is no proper wifi. At breakfast I got a half empty tea can from another table. Breakfast was nothing special anyway. You have to pay for towels and yukata. Please avoid this place if you want to enjoy your trip in Japan.

Disappointing overall. Service was good but rooms were smokey (including from the aircon). Bathrooms were clean but unisex so not ideal for women. Food did not meet high expectations set elsewhere either. It would appear you need to spend more money on accommodation in Katsura as this did not compare in value to other stays on KK.

Very modern building. Rooms were very large. Bath very clean. Good breakfast. What really made the difference was the outstanding and friendly service we received from the owner, they even took us to the station with their car. We can only recommend this friendly place! Thank you!!!

Helpful staff, delicious food
The staff here was so helpful! My phone was acting up, and they got me in touch with a fellow lodger to help fix it! How nice is that?! The bath was nice, and the food was excellent.

Pleasant stay
The inn keeper, Kenji san and his wife, were most helpful and gracious. On asking them, they packed box full lunch for the next day Kumano Kodo walk for a very reasonable charge.The facility was very clean and well maintained and a short walk from the JR station.

Very underwhelmed
After having stayed at very friendly and traditional minshukus with a very rural flavor, Minshuku Koyasaka felt quite impersonal and generic. Except for the tatami floors, it felt more like a regular hostel than a traditional Minshuku. There were many people in the place so it was quite noisy and people were coming and going which I suppose also took away from the experience (considering that the other places were extremely quiet). The location was convenient since it was close to the station but very average (compared to the others) as it was just in the middle of the town. This was the only place where I did not like the food ( and I am not a picky eater)! That said, the staff were friendly and attentive. The facilities were newly renovated and clean. I do think that it lacks that traditional character and intimacy of the other Minshukus which make the Kumano Kodo experience so special.

Hard to find but very comfortable
This Minshuku moved location a few years ago and the new location is given on the Tanabe website or on Google, but the free town maps given by the local tourist office show the old location. The old location still has the Minshuku Kosakaya sign out the front and a hand written sign, in Japanese only, telling you it has moved but we couldn't work out where it had gone to. A helpful local escorted us to the new location. We had the ensuite rooms which were large, clean and comfortable. Dinner was very good, especially if you like tuna. The owners were very friendly and helpful but have very little English so brush up on your Japanese. We stayed two nights so we could have a relaxed visit to Nachisan, but there is very little else to do in Katsuura, other than a morning visit to the tuna markets. The train trip from Katsuura to Nagoya covers beautiful coastal and rural scenery but if using a JR pass, you will have to pay an 820 yen surcharge to the conductor as the train uses a private line for a short part of its journey.

Comfortable and friendly, but i little too noisy
This was the last night in my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, so i was really sad and my review cannot be so happy as the previous ones. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, near o good restaurant and to the Katsura Railway Station. I hadn't any meals, so i cannot say anything about that. The reception staff was really friendly and polite: he insisted to carry me to the near station by his car. Thanks!

This minshuku is quite new, full-equipped and comfortable. The owner has another place called hotel Kosakaya, which is near the correct location of the minshuku and could be confusing. (Actually we waited at the hotel Kosakaya for a long time until we asked the owner of izakaya nearby and know the correct place.) So we suggest that the owner can leave a post at the old house to let foreigner know how to find the correct place.

Nice, clean homey place to stay
Enjoyed our stay at Minshuku Kosakaya. The room was spacious and comfortable and the owner, Kenji Kosakaya was very personable and helpful. My husband had a water blister on his foot and Kenji even drove us to a pharmacy, then hospital, which were both closed, unfortunately. We finally drained the blister ourselves, with Kenji lending us a needle and lighter to sterilize, and large band aids. We elected to only have the breakfast, as we wanted to try restaurants in the town. Kenji made very good recommendations. We would recommend this minshuku to everyone. It's a little bit of a walk from the train station, but not too bad.
