Pleasant and happy stay
This was a very pleasant and happy place to stay. It was very much akin to a German or Austrian pension. The sauna was very nice after a long hike, and it was right in front of the river where you can also soak in thermals. The dinner was excellent, although one had to walk a long distance to reach this location from Kumano Hongu Taisha.

Warm Home
Pension Ashitanomori were welcoming and warm. The bedroom was cosy. The baths had everything we needed. The location is ideal for experiencing Kawayu Onsen.
Special mention for the food - Pension Ashitanomori made sure we were always satisfied and fueled for our journey.

Love love loved this place!
This was my fave stay on the KK!
It was right opposite the Kawayu onsen in the river at the senninburo (this was on Dec 15th). Plus I used the personal onsen in the pension. The staff were super friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend choosing all 3 meals to be provided at the place. The bento box lunch was delicious and I'm glad I was able to add it on last minute the night before.
You also get a yukata provided for your use.

Best Relief from the Rain and Cold
What a special family-run resting spot. We had finished a rainy, adventurous day on the Kumano Kodo and arrived soaking wet and cold. We were welcomed in to a thermos of hot green tea in our room, shoe dryers (which was critical to our comfort the next day), and a comfortable private onsen to warm up. The hamburger dinner also hit the spot. Everything was so clean and cozy, we highly recommend this spot.

What a fantastic place to stay!!! We loved everything from the service to the food to the private onset. The location is easy find. Everybody we interacted were very helpful, kind ans accommodating. convenient transportation, very friendly, and the spring room is very good
They will inquire about the guests' itinerary for the next day, confirm the breakfast time, and try to prepare everything according to the guests' schedule. Both husband and wife were very hospitable
The owner was exceptionally welcoming and proactively introduced the town's dining options, hot springs, and various amenities. Guests can borrow a shovel to excavate a hot spring by the river. Although it is a public restroom, it maintains good sanitary standards. The wait time for the shared bathroom may be slightly longer, and sound insulation could be somewhat less effective

Nice food and wonderful natural hot springs
Although we consider it rather expensive to have shared bathrooms, we recognise that the guesthouse was located in a unique environment, had spacious and clean rooms, and above all we highlight the very abundant and delicious food and the possibility of bathing in completely natural hot springs on the banks of the river. They also provided us with slippers to go down to the river.

Beautiful Guesthouse

Great place to explore the area

A cozy and comfy stay at Pension Ashitanomori, a lovely place run by the Kurisu Family.
The location is superb. It is just next to the Fujiyamae bus stop at Kawayu Onsen area, the rooms is clean and its facing the beautiful river view. They have a clean Male and Female toilets outside the room, and 2 private onsen at Level 1 for you to enjoy and is perfect, especially after the day hike.
They will check what time you want the dinner/breakfast to be served to ensure the food is warm for you to enjoy. The hamburger steak meal is so satisfying.

Room with a beautiful view
Loved being right beside the beautiful river, which we enjoyed swimming in and building “hot tubs” in the rocks the next morning.
Very comfortable accommodation. Two beautiful large private onsens for two.
Shared bathroom facilities but very clean and well kept. Meals were delicious. And the host was really helpful. Big thanks for the origami swans his little daughter gifted us!

amazing trip
We stayed in this homestay for 2 days (July 21-July 23, 2023), the experience was very good, and the owner was very enthusiastic.
The boss gave very good suggestions for our hiking itinerary. And repeatedly confirm with us whether we can complete the hiking route we booked before. Fortunately, the boss communicated with us many times for suggestions, otherwise we may encounter great troubles on foot. The boss suggested that we take half of the original route, which is a very scenic route.
Early the next morning, the boss even took us to the bus stop, fearing that we would go in the wrong direction.
On the day of the hike, the boss prepared a lunch box for the two of us, which was very useful during the hike.
In addition, the boss also presented cakes and ice cream for dinner on the two days of the stay, which were very delicious.
On the last night, the proprietress invited my daughter and her younger daughter to set off fireworks, which was so cool.
Next time I come again, I will still stay in this homestay.

Best stay ever!
Very good hostess, daughter is a very cute little girl. The best accommodation I've ever experienced on the Kumano Kodo. The hostess worked hard to learn Chinese and made a delicious dinner. Because we left early the next morning, she prepared extra breakfast for us and it was also delicious, and she wrote us a note wishing us all the best. Very cozy. We need additional luggage delivery service. The luggage arrives at the next hotel very early, and there are seasonal snacks from the hostess along with the luggage. deeply appreciated. Our favourite spot in Japan!
Pension Ashitanomori was such an amazing find! The family that runs the place are the absolute sweetest, the onsen experiences (both in the river as well as the private onsen) were splendid, our room looked over the river, the dinner was one of the best ones we had in Japan, and the breakfast and lunch boxes were thoughtfully put together and wonderfully balanced. We could not have asked for a better place to spend the night along the Kumano Kodo - cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Favorite part of our trip
Staying at Pension Ashitanomori was our favorite part of our trip! The room was beautiful and very charming with all wooden furniture. We loved the grounds, the indoor bath, and had a lot of fun bathing in the river. Reception was super helpful and very friendly, making sure that we knew where to drop off our bags for the luggage service. We really appreciated every part of our stay at Pension Ashitanomori and can't recommend it enough! It was really lovely to just enjoy the room with the beautiful view of the river.

Nice
Our stay was comfortable. The room was clean and the food was good. I was surprised that the bathroom was shared. I’m personally not comfortable with that and thought it felt more like dorms.
Having said that, the owners/hosts were super nice and helpful and did everything to make us feel comfortable and happy. In the end, we were comfortable and happy.

Good way to experience a river onsen
This location is a more "hotel" style compared to staying in the houses during the Kumano Kodo. The place is on the older side, but quite nice with a tea and snack when we arrived and tea in the room. We arrived when it started to get late and we also traveled in the fall, so the giant river onsen wasn't created yet, but the owners still helped us out to go check out bathing in the river. After that we were able to clean off in their private onsen with a large bath. It was very clean and nice, but compared to the public onsen the water was not as hot.

A very cool location with great bath options
We loved doing the river onsen thing here at Ashitanomori! This place is like a little Swiss guest house - all wooden inside, warm and cozy, with lovely tiled private indoor onsen rooms. There are probably 10 bedrooms here, a restaurant with western style food (sort of pricy without other options in town) - we had the hamburger with some beers which was yummy. I recommend if you're staying at the cool river onsens!

Delightful and peaceful place to Stay
Absolutely loved our stay here and wish we could have stayed longer! The indoor private onsen was amazing, and our room was super comfortable and had a cool 70's lodge vibe. The restaurant was very affordable and had one of the best breakfasts we had during our time in Japan. We would definitely come back here to stay.

Wonderful rest day location
This was our favorite place on the entire long walk (including Kohechi). Service was exceptional and personal, the facility was spotlessly clean. The bath was wonderful and it was nice to be able to use the baths as a couple; and baths were open all day. Food was great and delicious. The pension is quiet even though it is on a main street. The staff when out of their way to be sure we got on the right bus and had a nice rest. Highly recommended.

Very friendly pension with an excellent location
This pension is located right opposite the river and outdoor onsen, and I was able to bathe in the onsen under the moonlight alone! The owner and staff are friendly and hospitable. My only complaint is that the food is catered more for meat-eaters, and limited for vegetarians.

Excellent stay
Had a great time here. The rooms were really comfortable and we enjoyed both the river onsen and being able to use the private onsen in the hotel. The owners were really lovely and even came and stood with us with an umbrella to wait for the bus when were leaving!

家族風呂で温泉が楽しめたこと、長旅の日だったので、夜ががっつりステーキが頂けた事、雨で塗れた靴をシュードライヤーで乾かして頂いたこと、そして出発の時、バスに間に合わなかった私達を、オーナーの方が車で古道の入り口まで送って下さったこと、など等、とてもお世話になりました。日本食に飽きてきていた彼が、とても楽しそうに洋食、朝ごはん（パン、新鮮野菜、フルーツなど）をほおばっていました。

Great accommodation at a beautiful place
The owners were very nice and paid a lot of attention to our children. They gave wonderful advice for the hiking and small walk. The pension is so charming, so well located on the river with incredible onsen. The breakfast is huge and good and diner (meat and French wine !!!) perfect. We hope to come back again to the pension ashitanomori ! Thank you

Ashita no Mori
This accomodation is outstanding - not in the sense of a regular hotel or guesthouse, but in view of the friedliness of the owner. All members of the owner family really care for you, they give you the feeling that you are welcome. And the location next to the river with the onsen: gorgeous. The rooms were very comfortable, staff very pleasant and nice, food was delicious, baths were very nice and clean. Best location. In the morning before we left we went out in front along the river and made our own onsens. One of the best parts of our entire trip

Simple, Beautiful, Unique
The guestrooms were simple but comfortable. We slept to the gentle sound of the river outside our window. The food was excellent, our hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful: the father even walked us to the bus stop and waited with us. The highlight was the onsen scene: the 24hr baths were hot, and the thermal vents in the river bed were incredibly cool!

Amazing place!
We really loved staying at Ashitanomori. The room was nice and the onsens was great. The water was too high for us to bathe in the onsen outfront which would have been really great, but we were able to use the private facilities.
Food and presentation was delicious and best of all was the lovely family that was very helpful and friendly. It was quite rainy so the father even drove us to the bus stop which we truly appreciated.
Would 100% recommend staying here. Thank you for everything!

Comfortable inn with wonderful service and outstanding location! Very easy to reach from other locations in the Hongu area, cute atmosphere, lovely baths, and astonishingly beautiful location along the river, with natural hot springs right outside the door!

Perfect Place
Beside the river, fun to go in the warm water there and clean-up in the very nice, private hotel onsen later. Everything was great, the steak dinner superb.

7 stars experience !
We had a wonderful time at Pension Ashitamori. We are a family with 3 teenagers and everybody enjoyed the heartly welcome of the owner and his son, the Pension japanese-chalet style, the bath and the river. Owner was really helpful, drove us to a nearby onsen at Wataze. It was soenjoyable that we stayed a second night!

Really great place to stay
We really enjoyed our stay at Pension Ashitanomori. The owner is lovely and really goes out of his way to help you. The location is perfect, right on the river near the onsen, with lovely views of the river. The dinner was great too!

Calm and relaxing
I only stayed one night but very much enjoyed the peaceful location. The beds were extremely comfortable and it was wonderful to go to sleep with the sounds of the river so close. The shared bathroom, toilets and onsen were extremely clean. Meals were wholesome and I enjoyed being able to have a glass of wine with my dinner. In the morning I had an early breakfast and caught the bus to my walking destination.

Good stay
A medium sized place, but the chalet inspired design gives it a nice atmosphere. The rooms are reasonably spacious and cozy. They were even kind enough to come pick us up in Hongu when we would've otherwise been stuck waiting for the bus.

Very good service at Pension Ashitanomori
We very very impressed with the good service at pension Ashitanomori. We felt very welcome and at home. The personnel did everything to make our stay a wonderful experience even though we stayed just for 1 night. We can truly recommend this accommodation.

Enjoyable stay
We had a very enjoyable stay at the pension. The room was cozy with a fantastic view of the river, the food was delicious and the onsen bath was delightful. We especially appreciate the service from mr kurisu, it was more than we asked for. We thank him and his family very much for making our trip memorable.
