Historic Tanabe Rental House

This warm, private rental house AIWASO on the panoramic grounds where once a castle stood had been a famed inn for visiting dignitaries since 1957. Now, partially renovated yet keeping its rustic Japanese nostalgic charm, this former retreat will help visiting guests feel comfortable and "at home," perfect for private family, friends or groups before they depart on their Kumano Kodo journey. The house features a modern Italian Magniflex bed, and a monitor that plays music and projects images on the fusuma sliding doors. Sunsets and sunrises are splendid from the deck. No meals are included, but guests can use the kitchen. Only one group a day. (Just 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by taxi from Kii-Tanabe Station.)

lovely space with great view

we didn't get to meet the hosts but they were very helpful with pre check-in communications, all the way till we checked out, and provided us with some useful local info. we were very fortunate to have caught the fireworks from Aiwaso deck as they had a festival when we were there. We were also welcomed with local snacks and fruits. very clean space, well-kept and had everything we needed and more.

Amazing traditional Japanese ryokan

We stayed only one night before starting the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. I wish we had booked to stay here longer. The home is wonderful, full of authenticity and comfort.

Tanabe Gem!

Aiwaso is a little bit of a walk from the Tanbe Train Station, but since we were hiking Kumano Kodo, a bit of walking did not bother us at all. We received several messages from the host about our arrival time, etc... Great communication. We actually arrived a little early and the host was still cleaning, but she was very pleasant, and greeted warmly. This home is UNBELIEVABLE! It is very traditional Japanese, which we absolutely adored. It is decorated elegantly and simply. It is located on the side of the hill, and has a fantastic view of Tanabe, the beach and the mountains in the distance. It has a gorgeous sitting room that over looks the garden, and the stunning views. The facilities are tremendous, very clean and everything needed for a very comfortable stay. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the host left us many Japanese snacks that were a nice touch, and very tasty. We only stayed one night, as we left early to begin our hike to Nonaka, but the sunrise was absolutely stunning. We were a bit sad that we couldn't stay a bit longer as Aiwaso was just a great experience. If we ever make it back to Tanabe, we will definitely stay at Aiwaso. Thank You!

Beautiful house, highly recommended!

We had a great time in AIWASO! The house is beautiful, with a wonderful view, and conveniently located a short walking distance from a supermarket. It's a bit far from the train station (which is also a plus, as it's a bit higher up on the mountain, with great view and in a very peaceful neighborhood), so our host arranged to pick us up and drop us off at the station. Would highly recommend!

Fantastic historic experience!

This house, built by the landlady's grandfather himself, was an absolute gem! I had never been in a traditional Japanese home so was thrilled to get the chance here. The rooms were all cozy and you could tell great care was put into the build. The bathrooms were obviously upgraded to be very modern and there was good heating units in each room as well. The beds were off the floor and very comfortable (which was not traditional but kept you warmer). The hostess very graciously picked us up from the train station because we were getting in quite late and she wanted to make sure we had a good experience. We super appreciated this kindness! The house was a little bit farther from the train station than other options but the morning walk to the bus to go to Takijiri was lovely and a great way to peek at the town before heading off into the wilderness. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates older architecture and an authentic feel!!
