Description
Riverside Onsen Ryokan
Fujiya Ryokan is one of the largest accommodations in Kawayu Onsen and is located at the east end of the village. All but three of the rooms are traditional Japanese style. The other three are modern western theme rooms based on earth, bamboo and wood respectively, all with private baths on the balcony. Every room has a view of the Oto River which flows through the village. The décor is traditional Japanese with Ikebana and other art throughout the facility. Hot spring water bubbles to the river surface in front of the hotel.

Fujiya Ryokan
This place wasn’t directly on our Kumano Kodo route, so we took a short bus ride to get there—but the bus stops right in front, which was very convenient. The reception staff were very kind and helpful. Our room was spacious with three beds; a bit outdated, but still comfortable. We were provided traditional robes and jackets, which was a nice touch. The meals were delicious—one of our favorites of the entire trip. We also opted for the private onsen, and it was absolutely worth it: beautiful and perfect after a long day of trekking. We would definitely stay here again.

Large clean rooms did not visit baths in hotel as we went to river onsen. Food was very good however did not have breakfast as needed to catch early bus. Hotel was able to organise bento instead. Dinner excellent but a lot of fish again, some other protein would be good.

I would gladly return
I would gladly return here if i go back to Kawayu. Not even 24 hours in Japan and I have already found myself somewhere remote and peaceful but I didn't yet have the courage to try the public onsen. However, I booked their private onsen for 45 minutes and loved it. Further, the location is serene with fewer crowds compared to Yunomine, and seeing the senninburo at the start of winter was magical. I am also grateful they have accommodated my 1730hrs dinner request as late meals are hard for me to digest. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely faultless. There is also a water station for hikers/pilgrims, and my luggage was already waiting in my room upon arrival. They also offer a free bus to Hosshimon Oji, though it only starts at 0900hrs. Overall, the service, the ambiance, and the food were impeccable. Highly recommended.

Our family of three enjoyed our stay. The rooms were clean and spacious. We enjoyed the public baths as well as soaking along the river bed. The food was delicious. The people all incredibly friendly. I would definitely stay here again. The free shuttle to the start of the hike the next day was very helpful!

Luxury and Relaxation After a Long Day on the Trail
Amazing stay — the dinner was exceptional, and having a private onsen in the room felt like pure luxury after hiking over 30 km. The staff were welcoming, and everything was beautifully organized. A perfect mix of comfort and tradition in a remote, peaceful setting.

A lesson in photos vs. reality
We initially booked this location to be able to sit in pools next to the river that push out vulcanic hot water. But what we found was that it was difficult to get a constant temperature and that the indoor onsen was much more reliable. The room had spiders, but the food and the baths were great.

The food and food service was fabulous, our server was very helpful and friendly. Being able to create your own hotpool in the river right outside was such a once in a lifetime experience that is unique to this area. The Japanese style room was generously sized, though the futon was a little thin after a long day's walking.

This was a 5 star, first class hotel. Beautiful building, Room , onsen. The food was amazing. Perfect! Need to take a public bus which should be highlighted on the itinerary. Wonderful location and atmosphere
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fujiya and very much enjoyed its location nestled on the bank of a river with natural hot springs bubbling up through it. Being surrounded by the mountains and greenery was good for the soul and it was lovely to sit in the outdoor bath on our balcony to enjoy it. In hindsight we would have loved to stay for two days but we were eager to get started on walking the Kogumo-torigoe section of the Nakahechi route.

A real japanese experience
I love this place. It was my first time experiencing a Japanese experience, and you got it. You made me forget all about an American-European way of travelling. The room was excellent, the private Japanese bath was terrific, and the food was excellent. My only recommendation is that for new travellers in Japan, it could be beneficial to provide some written information about the menu so that they can learn about the dishes and ingredients.

Beautiful Ryokan
We love the hotel and its amenities. The onsen was relaxing, clean, and enjoyable after a tiring day of travelling and walking. The staff are attentive. The private onsen was a really good oprion for those of us who are either new to this experience or too shy to use the public onsen. The kaiseki dinner was wonderful and made us feel truly special like attending a banquet because a long table was set up exclusively for our group of 14 in a room with our very own servers. The food was very good and the way each dish was presented was so exquisite! We left the table happy and our tummies so full.

Hotel staff was inhomogeneously friendly and/or flexible - it always depended on whom you asked. Rooms were quite old and would benefit from some renovation, moreover just clean as you should expect as the absolute minimum. Breakfast and dinner (in particular) were good. In total, really poor value for money but had no other option due to our late booking.

The baths & hot river are well worth it!
I was spoiled by the baths at Fujiya Ryokan. There were four in total--the wood bath, the marble bath, and two outdoor baths (one for men and one for women). The wood and marble rooms rotate gender at midnight. The outdoor bath was magical, but even more magical was getting to dig a hole in the river outside the hotel and create my own little bath. I was a little overwhelmed at the size of the Ryokan after staying in Minshuku for the rest of the trip, but it was a fun change. The food was also quite good and beautifully prepared.

Luxury in Kawayu Onsen
Fujiya Ryokan is a rather large ryokan hotel with an ideal location, right across the area of the river where most people dig their own river onsen. We tried that once but then decided it was lot easier to relax in the onsen on the lanai off of our room. Pure luxury! The room we splurged on must have been recently renovated. It was very well appointed, and the outdoor onsen overlooking the river was superb. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. Dinner was a traditional kaiseki, and breakfast was a combination of Western and Japanese food.

amazing onsen and traditional meals
clean, comfortable hotel right on the river. This is not as personal as a feel as the other guesthouses we stayed in on the Kumano Kodo but the rooms are super clean and comfortable and the private bath was SO nice. We really enjoyed dinner, which was a variety of traditional Japanese foods that we hadn't seen before. The only bummer is that, since we took the early bus, we weren't able to join breakfast and the to-go breakfast was six cold rice balls.

A great first stop on my Kumano Kodo adventure.
This was my first stop on a Kumano Kodo hike. The hotel was really comfortable, the service was friendly and genuine. My room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The food was really great with so much variety of delicious morsels. It is served in a separate dining room. The onsen was so relaxing, both the inside and outside ones. The hotel had a free shuttle up to the start of a few different Kumano hikes.I would highly recommend a stay here!

This place is a gem and really easy to get to from Yunomine Onsen (if you hiked there it's a short bus ride). Stay here for the onsen and river hot springs- the food was great too!
Fujiya is an older ryokan/hotel, but that didn't diminish our stay. Here are the highlights: -Located right on the river- we dug our own hot spring- the hotel loans you a shovel for this purpose. Its just a short bus ride from the town. -The private onsen was very nice though its an extra cost apart from the 'public' onsens. -The dinner and breakfast were simply fantastic. The bento box was also very good. - The staff were very professional, friendly and helpful. - The room was fine- Japanese Style futons, quiet and comfortable, with a view of the river.

A great experience
We stayed in the Japanese room which was the only room available at the time of reservation. The room is very spacious with the window facing the river. The room has no in-room onsen, so we ran into the private onsen on the first floor (the public onsen is next door). After a full day hike, the onsen really relax your body and prepare you for the next day. We reserved the room with meal plan, the dinner and the breakfast were super good. Since we prefer hot dishes for breakfast, it would be nice if there were more hot dishes served. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bus stop is right outside the hotel, the staff would help you with the bus schedule. We left something in the room and the staff attached it to our luggage which was delivered to our next accommodation. Outstanding services! The toilet in the room needed thorough cleaning.

Quiet onsen town. Lovely place to take a break from the hustle and bustle.
Nice hotel near the riverbank. We missed the bus-stop and had to walk back from Kawayu stop. The actual bus stop should be Fujiya-Mae stop. Dinner service was lovely, so was the breakfast. Amazing, luxuary experience
We booked a Western style room and were blown away! Woderful design, spacious room, own onsen on the balcony, shower with a view. We were relaxed from the first step into the room. From the outside the hotel doesn't look that promising, but it is fine inside and the Western rooms are just great. The village is very small and its biggest asset is the river that is nice for swimming, but the most amazing thing are the hot springs below that you can free by shoveling small holes. The hotel staff was super friendly and helpful and gave us shovels to make our own onsen in the river. The food (for the Western rooms served in extra dining room) was execptional. All in all an execptional experience that has of course its price.

Loads of dishes and delicious! I stayed a night here and at Ryokan Adumaya in Yunomine, and considering the money paid for both, I enjoyed this much much more! Wish I'd stayed both nights here.

The most luxurious ryokan in Kumano Kodo
Fujiya was the most luxurious of the three ryokan we stayed at during our trip to Kumano Kodo. Our room had an amazing private hot bath on a balcony overlooking the river. The food was extra-ordinary and the staff very helpful. We also had fun shovelling our own hot bath out on the river bank!

welcoming fine stay
Lovely location next to the natural riverside onsen. Clean and modernly designed rooms and spaces. English speaking receptionists is very helpful. Generally very hospital and professional. love the additional thoughts of lending you the digger so you can dig your own natural onsen along the river and the coin laundry facilitaties. very thoughtful. only issue is the lighting in the room is too dim

Heavenly site!
Our one night stay in Fujiya Ryokan was one of the highlights of our 3 week stay in Japan. From the moment we arrived, when the staff greeted us getting off the bus, we felt very well looked after. The location is stunning - so quiet and peaceful with the river and the forest filling the windows. The Western room with private open air bath was very large, comfortable and stylish. The food was excellent traditional japanese style dining. The little gift shop is well worth looking at before you leave! There are some very nice, locally made items available (scarves, clothing). We thoroughly recommend.

Beautiful and modern room but still traditional at the same time. Our room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. Excellent Stay
Great location right off of the bus line. The ryokan is a bit old and in need of a refresh, but the rooms were very clean and the service exceptional. The Onsen was fantastic, there is an indoor and outdoor option as well as a river across the street. The dinner was a feast, fresh and delicious. That and the Onsen were the best part of our stay. They served a delicious Japanese breakfast as well, where you grilled your own fish and packed us a fabulous to go lunch for our hike.

Overall excellent, however a poor standard of hospitality service (rude) by a single staff member in the dining room on our second night was disappointing. The manager was advised at the time. The rest of the staff and experience were fantastic and we are sure that this was an isolated staff member issue only. Amazing river and onsen.

Not very suitable for hikers who leave early
The room is comfortable. The receptionists can't really converse in English, but are helpful. The breakfast is only served after 7am, hence not very suitable for hikers who are leaving early to Koguchi. Packed breakfast was provided, but it was just 3 onigiri - not worth the price paid.

So far so good - by Karen
The room, hotspring, service and location were good! Just right next to the bus stop, very convenient and they let me to use the washing and drying machine for the laundary. One thing I think it is a little overpriced is the quality of food. I was disappointed to the food variety and taste. For this price, it needs a great improvement. I paid extra 700 yen for the lunch box, which is much better than the dinner/breakfast included.

Great place to stay Kawayu Onsen
More of a ryokan style with amazing baths to relax in. There is a hot pool dug into the river bed just outside the ryokan and you can split your time between the pool and jumping into the pristine river. Comfy Tatami mat rooms, dinner and breakfast was a lavish Kaiseki style with many different dishes. Could be a little overwhelming for the uninitiated!

Fabulous in every way!
This ryokan is owned by a gracious lady who clearly is proud of her elegant but welcoming ryokan set in the most amazing and unique location. This was the highlight of mine and my two sisters' visit in Japan. We enjoyed an exquisite Kaiseki dinner in a private dining room, cooked and served by our own hostess, followed by a relaxing soak in the open-air onsen. Earlier in the day, we experienced the onsen by the river following our hike on the Nakahechi Trail...what an reward for our effort! I would also recommend walking the Daimonzaka rail to the Nachi Shrine! domo arigato gozaimasu!

This was a very nice, big hotel right on the river. The room was very big and very nice. The bedding was comfortable, we slept on tatami. We wished we could have used the seninburo but it was raining and cold. The baths were very nice, it was nice to have an outdoor bath. We were very disappointed in the evening dinner meal. It was served in a dining room and we felt very rushed. The waitress brought almost all of the food at once, and kept telling us to take our time, but then would bring more food, rushing us. We clearly weren't eating fast enough. Food was going cold because we couldn't keep up. It wasn't enjoyable at all. Since we ate about 30 minutes after some of the other guests in our dining room, the waitress cleared the dishes from other tables very noisily. It was so unpleasant, not peaceful or calm at all. After our wonderful, peaceful service at Ryokan Adumaya, we were incredibly disappointed. Although the waitress was friendly, we did not enjoy the meal.

Pleasant, slightly different
As always in Japan, this Ryokan is clean comfortable and friendly. We have rated it three instead of four only because we've recently stayed in better. The open air onsen is small but very nice, the inside onsen a little ordinary. As a treat there's also a public 'onsen' in the river across the road... a chance to mix it with a range of people in a natural hot spring in the river. The food is varied and good but not remarkable. Japanese style rooms are large, clean and comfortable

Wonderful Ryokan
Everything is good about this Ryokan. On arrival, I left my umbrella on the bus. They contacted the bus company's lost property department and it was sent on the following morning's bus. The hotel receptionist waited at the bus stop for the bus driver handed it over to him! Later the Ryokan offered their own transport to take guests to a starting point on the Kumano Kodo trail. They need to change the music in the restaurant: it's very repetitive

Excellent service, great baths!
Fujiya is a historical Japanese Ryokan and located in a great place. The service in the hotel was excellent: very friendly people, always willing to help, took very good care of us. The outdoor bath was good as well! The only thing could possibly be improved was dinner: too much food. When we thought dinner was over, they brought more food and then came with even dessert. I wish they could have told us how many turns they would serve us, so that we would be more prepared. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I recommend you to stay in this Ryokan.

Best location in hongu area!
The best things about fujiya are definetely the location and the baths. It is in front of the Kawayu river so you can just cross the street with flip flops, yukata and beach bag (they give you all three) and you are in the best natural onsen in the area. We loved the kawayu river, the natural setting is beautiful! When you have enough on being outside you can go back to the hotel and enjoy their baths (indoor and outdoor, both overlooking the river). rooms are good, our maid was really nice, food is good as almost everywhere in japan. Great website with clear information and nice pictures. Professional and knowledgeable staff at Kumano Travel, Brad, who gives prompt reply and helpful advice. Fujiya Ryokan is beautiful, we stayed at a nice modern style room with private bath! It was awesome! The hot spring river is right in front of Fujiya Ryokan, very unique and lovely place! We're also able to enjoy it at night looking at a full moon with numerous stars while soaking ourselves in a warm hot spring river! It was an unforgettable experience and amazing feeling!
