Pilgrims' Home
MUI is an older home lovely reformed into a cozy guesthouse steps away from the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route about 15 minutes walk east of Tsugizakura-oji. The owner moved to the area because of her love of the mountains and desire to live a rural lifestyle and was inspired to create a place of communication and exchange for pilgrims after her walk on the Way of St. James in Spain. The first thing that guests will notice is the location: a small set of homes, interspersed with tiny, terraced fields surrounded by towering cedars and cypress trees. The second is her pet goats! There are two Japanese-style guestrooms on the second floor with a communal sitting area, bath, and toilet on the first floor. A small yard in front of the house offers a quiet place to sit and relax. Home-made meals are served in the dining area, a renovated building next to the house.

Great Experience
We had a wonderful stay at the guesthouse. She was so kind and lovely & and gave us some great advice for the trail. The goat Haru was great as well :). She cooked us an amazing dinner and breakfast. Everything was self made and tasted insanely good.

滝尻王子と熊野本宮大社のちょうど中間に位置する好立地の宿で、熊野古道を歩く旅の拠点として非常に便利な宿でした。到着時には、旅行プランの相談や熊野古道の歩き方について丁寧にアドバイスをいただき、大変心強く感じました。夕食は手の込んだ料理が並び、一皿一皿に工夫が感じられる内容で、歩き疲れた身体にしみわたる満足度の高い食事でした。立地・サポート・食事のどれも期待以上で、熊野古道を歩く方に自信を持っておすすめできる宿です。

it was very cozy stay
The owner is the kindest! after long day of hiking, she welcomed me most kindly. She prepares very generous and delicious meals! We chatted over dinner for a long time, and it was fun! The next day, she even gave us a ride in her car to start the second day of hiking without worrying about reaching the next destination in time~ and ofcourse haru chan the goat outside the guest house is part of the experience~ overall it was a very pleasant experience, even though it is expensive it is worth it.

We loved our stay here. This was our favourite place to stay on our trip. Our host was so friendly and kind. You could tell that she made all of her food with love. The village was very peaceful, and the goat was really cute. I would highly recommend.

The owner cooks up a great 5-course meal for her guests. Very hospitable lady who also gave us tips on the Nakaheci route, like where to take our lunch, where to look for views. The guesthouse is right next to the trail, by marker 35. It's easy to get to at the end of a day's walk and easy to get back onto the trail the following day. The owner has a pet goat and let us feed it before we left.

食事は、現地食材（和歌山の梅、高野山のお麩など）を使用された、こだわりの創作料理で、ボリュームもありましたので大満足でした。 お弁当についても、2日目は昼時に昼ごはんを道中で入手するのが難しいので非常に有り難く、本宮までの道中で美味しく頂きました。 一点気になったのが、洗濯をさせて頂いたのですが、洗剤の強い匂いが服についてしまい、2日目はアブやハチが寄ってきました。洗剤は無香料のものの方が山歩きには合っていると思いました。 ヤギのはるくん、スタッフの方に良くしていただき、とても気持ちの良い滞在ができました。

Wonderful Stay!
I had a wonderful experience at Guesthouse MUI. The host was very friendly and cooked an excellent meal. Two other guests were also staying at the guesthouse, and we had great conversations. The host went above and beyond to help me during my stay. She researched trip options for me and helped me book accommodation at a future town on the Kumano Kodo because my travel plans changed. I highly recommend this guesthouse!

Such at Treat! Absolutely Rcommend
Kumi - has created a wonderful guest house. Super clean. The rooms and 'hang out space' very comfortable and welcoming. The location is beautiful and worth the climb up the hill - quiet and peaceful and would stay for longer easily. Kumi was super helpful with guidance and top tips (and dropped us off to the 'log bridge' start the next day). The food we had was incredible - dinner, breakfast and our packed lunch were all super - the quality, presentation and so very very good! An added bonus is Mr Goat - a friendly goat that thinks he is a dog. Even if we weren't doing the trek would love to come stay again. THANK YOU KUMI!

Exceptional food and host
We were very lucky to have supper, breakfast and a lunch box included as we got to sample the wonderful food of our wonderful host Kumi. Again our host went out of her way to accommodate our needs and drop us at the bus stop. We arrived early but with an area with outside seating provided we were able to rest.

Great stay!
We hiked the Nakahechi route in March 2025. Guest house Mui was our second night. We had a great stay here and enjoyed the fact that there were two rooms, so we got to meet and have dinner with a fellow hiker in the common room. We were so impressed by Kumi's warmth and amazing cooking. We enjoyed a nice hot shower and a lovely multicourse dinner, complete with homemade bread and wine. When we realized that we had packed too much stuff in our backpacks for some of the days ahead, Kumi kindly gave us a box and tape for our extra stuff, then arranged for the delivery of the box to our final destination. Kumi also introduced us to her pet goat, who was quite entertaining. This is a wonderful, clean, and spacious guesthouse.

Peaceful stay - wonderful owner
The best part of the stay was Kumi, the owner. It's a traditional home she has turned into a two room guesthouse. She is so sweet and helpful. Her house is clean and we slept well after a tough rainy day with gale force winds. The dinner was good and so was the breakfast. Recommended to shorten your final Day into Hongu.

Friendly Homestay with Goats!
We stayed at Guesthouse MUI for our second night along our pilgrimage and again were greeted with warm smiles and a lovely homecooked dinner. The guesthouse was right along the route which was very convenient, and our host had two adorable pet goats! We did our hike in the winter so there were fewer hours of daylight, and our host kindly drove us ahead a few kilometers down the trail in the morning so we'd be able to finish our last day's long, trek to Yunomine Onsen in time. Our host was super passionate about the route and had great information for us!

Kumi is amazing! MUI is right along the way and she is the most welcoming and helpful host. From her intro video to Haru and Dain (her goats), and the location, MUI was perfect. Not to mention Kumi’s incredible cooking. We had a fantastic multi course dinner and fresh bagels in the morning!! She even took the time to go over the following days hike with us and points of emphasis. Her lunch box was also amazing and she let us do laundry for a small fee which was key! Such a great spot along the way.

Very friendly, cordial and helpful host. She was the best thing about this minshuku. It is difficult to compare a minshuku with a ryokan or hotel because it is a lesser grade of accommodation but I felt it was a very good value for the cost. I think Mui is the last accommodation before Hongu Taisha so it is in an excellent spot. The meals were home cooked and very well presented and of high quality. I would suggest a stay here if someone asked for a recommendation.

Say hi to the goats!
Charming host and guesthouse, with a couple of goats who share the property. Also, it is a few extra kilometers along the hike, which makes the long day three a little shorter. Great meals--even a fresh-baked bagel (really!) for breakfast!

Lovely host and accommodation with much character
A bit cramped for a family of four but we made due. Hostess was lovely and kind. She prepared a fabulous dinner and was the highlight of our experience there. Breakfast was equally delicious and her packed lunch was great. Extra shout out for being able to deal with our various dietary issues. Overall very comfortable stay.

The owner, Mui San is very kind and helpful. We are late and she send staff to pick us up nearby Gyuba Doji by car (about 10mins away). Dinner served at 6pm, breakfast at 7am, with many self prepared food like yume and bagel. Recommended stay on Nakahechi.

This was one of the best expériences we had in our lives. Our host has created an atmosphère that we would qualify as a perfection. In every way this was an unforgettable stay. This was a great place with some of best food we had on our trip. The hostess was wonderful and gave us a ride to cut off about 4 km of road walking in the morning and ensure we could complete the long walk that day. The goats were an added bonus.

Incredible customer service and food
The accommodation was well done, about everything you would expect about a fun little house with goats. But what I want to praise especially was the attention to detail and the food. 朗らかなご夫婦と美味しいごはん
宿の御主人はとてもおしゃべり好きで、宿に泊まるお客さんは海外の方が多いという話、サンティアゴ巡礼に行った時の話、本当は高原で御宿を開きたかったけど結果的に今の場所もとてもよかったということを、楽しそうにお話して下さいました。奥さんは口数は少ないけれどにこにこと良い表情で、お料理がとっても美味しかったです。 翌日は雨が強かったのでトレイルは諦めましたが、またお邪魔することを約束して帰路につきました。どうもありがとうございました。

Family of four - walking the Nakahechi Route
We had a wonderful stay at Guest House MUI after a day's hike from Takahara. The accommodation was very convenient to the Nakahechi Route and very comfortable. Our hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The meals were astonishing. The supper was extensive, with dish after dish of delicacies. The freshly baked sourdough bread for breakfast was unexpected and delicious.

Our fav guesthouse
Guesthouse MUI is our favorite place for overnight in Nakahechi. It was our 2nd time staying there and we are hoping to go back again this year. The house is very clean, organized and comfortable and our hosts are a lovely couple and two adorable goats! They give us the warmest welcome and we can feel how much they care about every detail to make our staying memorable, and they do it all with passion! The homemade meals, including the bento box, were delightful! The food looks as good as it tastes, and it's perfectly balanced in flavors, textures and colors. It was a joy to hear our host explaining each dish and that most of them were prepared with local ingredients. In the morning, we woke up with the aroma of freshly baking bread, that we later could enjoy during our breakfast. MUI family, thank you for having us for New Year's Eve! Hope to see you soon!

small guesthouse with goat friends!
This is a small guesthouse run by a lovely couple - I think it's just two guestrooms so will not feel too busy. The food is great and plentiful, and had homemade bread for the breakfast. The host graciously offered to drive me to the trailhead the next morning since I planned to skip the paved part of the walk to Hongu, which saved me around 2 hours of roadside walking. They have two friendly goats that roam around the front and back yard!

It's a great place, they have 2 goats in the garden, and the location is the best if you continue walking the next day. Best Meal Ever!
Guesthouse Mui was the highlight of our 3 day walk. The food was extraordinary- we were served up an amazing banquet of beautifully cooked Japanese delicacies for dinner. Breakfast was superb too - including freshly made sourdough. The hosts were absolutely lovely and went above and beyond to help us including driving us 15 mins to an alternate walk start to reduce the 21km day to 17km and helping us find an IPhone we lost on the trail and posting it to our next destination. My children loved patting the pet goats at Guesthouse Mui. Can’t recommend the place highly enough, it was fabulous.

A wonderful first night
Great welcome. All facilities were very clean.stairs to room quite steep after a long day and to the bathroom. Meals were outstanding. Location is great but the signage was difficult to see and we had to back kilometre. Definitely would recommend. Good size room for 2, a stool or small table in room would help to keep gear tidy overnight.

いかにも古民家という感じの宿でやぎちゃんが2頭いました。 食事が離れで雨の時は大変かもしれません。内容は朝晩とも美味しく頂きました。 夜窓を開けていたら網戸があるにも関わらず小さい虫がたくさん入ってきて布団に くっついてしまいましたが、スタッフの方にお願いしてすぐ取って頂きました。

Of our 5 nights on the Kumano, MUI was the most memorable for the warmth of hospitality, the care for guests, the food, and the goats. Of course, can't forget the goats. It's very difficult to put into words how much thoughts the hosts had put into creating the best possible experience for guests - from taking time during dinner to make sure you knew what to expect on tomorrow's route, making clear the expectations of the guest house, and the incredibly detailed and delicious dinner.

Wonderful hosts and Superb food
We were greeted by the host with a cool drink and a warm smile. The lodgings were spotless. The food was 5 star quality with many items hand made such as the plum wine and the delicious bread. Every item on the plate was described and beautifully presented. As a vegan, it was a pleasant surprise and delicious. Both hosts were informative and passionate, and provided many useful tips on the next days walk. Highly recommended.

Very friendly hosts! Masanari-san and his wife have previously worked in the restaurant and hospitality/travel business, and it shows! The food was soooo good. Room is simple and very clean. Shower and bath area were easy to use. There's a little area for drying clothes, and a washing machine with soap you can use for ¥300. The goats are cute, and you get to take a photo with them when you leave. The location is excellent, just go down the hill from Tsugizakura and turn right.

Cute mountain home with lovely hosts, the best food and cheeky goats
Loved the food. It was the best out of all the places, fresh homemade bread says it all. Bath area is a simple shower and tub. Room is neat and roomy. Hosts are kind and chatty. The goats are cute but they will try and eat your stamp book if you’re not careful!

The meals!
The owner of Guest house MUI are really nice people, full of little attentions for you, the goats are super cute, the rooms are perfect for the night and can't be beaten for the price. But really, the highlight of this place is the food. The food is sooooooo good, it's crazy! And since they have only two rooms, it's a very intimate setting and you get to eat with the other guests and make friends. We took the vegetarian option and : - The supper was so delicious, best food on the kumano kodo - The breakfast was somehow even better, with homemade bread and lots of great things to fill you up! - The bento is really big and great, you can see that the owner are trekkers and that they understand that you need energy in the middle of your day to fuel up! And, again, so good! Thank you very much for welcoming us into your guest house!

A Wonderfully Cosy and Welcoming Stay with AMAZING Food!
Thank you to Masanari and his wife for such a warm and welcoming stay. I felt so at home at this homestay experience. The rooms are basic but comfortable and all the amenities are easily available within the house, I was able to take a lovely shower and even wash some clothes to dry by the morning which was super appreciated. The food was INCREDIBLE - the multi-course dinner, filling breakfast with homemade bread and the delicious packed lunch box filled my heart and my stomach. Thank you!

A friendly goat, fantastic food, and super hosts
Masanari-san, Kumi-san, and Haru-chan warmly welcomed us to their beautiful home (they have the best welcome video ever). The room was spacious and beautiful, and the hot bath - a true lifesaver after a long day of hiking in the rain. Dinner and breakfast prepared by Kumi-san deserve a Micheline star! Our hosts were kind, fun, and very helpful - Masanari-san advised us how to best tackle the next day's route and even gave us a lift the next morning.

An amazing stay!
Staying at Guesthouse Mui was one of the highlights of my Kumano Kodo trip. The location is perfect and the hosts were extremely kind and accommodating throughout my visit. The food was absolutely amazing, some of the best I've had on all my visits to Japan and perfect after a long day of hiking! Cute guesthouse with restaurant quality food
A really nice guesthouse, super hosts and with a good communal chill out area. The bath area was a little dated compared to the rest of the guesthouse, but was clean and warm. The food here was excellent, dinner and breakfast were very filling and very good quality, dinner was traditional Japanese style with some international twists and lots of courses. The bento box provided the next day was really good too, with variety, tasty food and filling enough for our longest day hike. Hosts were very welcoming and friendly! Cute goats too!

Best Meal We Had In Japan
We had the pescatarian dinner here and it was amazing, with many delicious and very clever dishes that were all perfectly seasoned. It was my birthday when we stayed here and the hosts were so kind, they made a little decorated dish to celebrate. We had a lot of good food in Japan but the dinner at Guest House MUI was the best meal we ate during our trip. As described in the posting the house is a little older but it was quiet and was spotlessly clean. My wife used to raise goats and she enjoyed meeting the goats, she said they are very happy and she now follows Guest House MUI on Instagram to see new goat photos.

動物好きなので、ヤギがいるということと、なるべく本宮寄りに泊まりたかったことから、こちらの宿を選びました。 単純な動機から選びましたが、この宿の魅力はそれだけではなくて、今は、ここに泊まれて良かった！と本当に思います。 宿泊は私だけでしたが、かわいいヤギさんたちや丁寧な接客はもちろん、オーナー夫妻の笑顔がとても素敵で、あたたかい時間を過ごすごとができました。 特筆すべきは奥様の手料理でしょう！地元の素材をふんだんに使って作られる多彩なお料理、どれも美味しかったです。中でもラタトゥイユが忘れられません…！朝のパンも奥様手作りで、麹を使ったこだわりの焼きたてパン、このお宿の雰囲気のような、とてもやさしい味がしました。パンを食べて、美味しさにあんなに感動したのは初めてです。 またご主人からは、ここに泊まられた方々のカミーノ等のエピソードや次の日の道行きの丁寧なアドバイスなど、楽しむだけではなく実際に歩く時の情報を教えていただけて、本当に助かりました。水場や高低差の情報などを伺っていなかったら、ちょっと無謀な歩き方をしていたかもしれません。 また機会があればぜひ泊まりたいと思う、素敵なお宿。とても気持ちよく過ごせました。ありがとうございました。

Homely stay with delicious bread
Guest house MUI was so comfortable and cosy, it felt like a home. We arrived a couple of hours earlier than expected and were able to check in early for a small fee. The room was comfortable and everything was spotless. The meals (all vegetarian) were so tasty, and there was plenty of it. The homemade bread for breakfast was delicious! The host also spoke good English and shared tips and information about the next day's hike. There are also two very cute goats! It was a lovely stay.

A quiet and relaxing stay

大変お世話になりました
客室2つの小さなお宿ですか、野中地区では一番本宮大社寄りになるので歩きで本宮大社にお参りする自分にとっては翌日の負担を軽減する意味でも助かりました。 料理もとても美味しく、朝食に当日焼いた自然酵母のパンが出たのはちょっとびっくりしました。昼食にお願いしたお弁当もとても良く、歩き疲れた体にありがたかつです。 忘れていけないのは看板ヤギの兄弟の存在、めっちゃ癒されました。 立地的にも色々制約のある中、オーナー夫妻の温かい接客に触れ、とても印象深い滞在になりました。大変お世話になりました。また伺いたくなる宿です。

Guest House MUI
Guest House MUI was easy to find and check in. The host was very nice and all the little details of the stay are what makes the stay memorable. Check in was simple and informative and dinner was quickly prepared on time and delicious. It was extremely nice to have such a good conversation with the owners and the other guests during dinner and breakfast. Having a set lights out policy (2200) was nice and comforting. Laundry and shower facilities were convenient and needed (we were soaked from heavy rains). A particular note for Guest House MUI. Putting our bentos in the hard-plastic container was PERFECT! We used those containers throughout the rest of the trip and they protected everything from mikan to onsen eggs! Very considerate!

Love and care in every detail
We are completely in love with Guest House MUI. Our hosts were such a nice people! They carefully though about every detail to make our overnight there pleasant and relaxing. Everything was well organized, very clean and they were actually the only of the 3 places we stayed during our journey that were taking ALL the precautions they should during the pandemic. Regarding the meals our hosts offered us, we were thrilled! I have been living in Japan for four years, but I must confess that so far japanese food for me was basically sushi and sashimi, but Guest House MUI showed me how wrong I was! The Japanese gastronomy is very rich and full of amazing flavors. All the meals had a beautiful presentation and, once again, we could feel how much our hosts though and cared about us. Finally, I have to mention that we had a funny surprise when we heard our hosts pets while we were waiting for dinner time, they have two friendly goats!

Fantastic food
Fantastic food. I strongly recommend staying here. Also, staying in Nonaka (instead of staying in Chikatsuyu) puts you a little further along the trail, which means your next day hike will be slightly shorter (only 20 km). Pretty standard futon on tatami mat for a bedroom and hot shower in the bathroom. Good wifi. There's a good heater in the bedroom, so if you're travelling in cooler months, you'll be nice and toasty warm.

熊野古道巡礼中間点
継桜王子を過ぎてすぐに表れた3匹の猿に気を取られたのと、宿の案内板が進行方向の目線の逆にあり、しかも薄暗い条件に対して黒字に白文字がやや薄れていたので見落としました。それでおかしいなと思いつつも下りで歩きやすいのもあってトンネル迄行ってしまい、さすがにおかいいと電話したらかなり行き過ぎてしまっていました。引き返していたら、車でお迎えに来て下さいました。 到着者は夕刻着が多いと思われ、その付近は樹木が生い茂って薄暗いのもあり、案内の看板を白地に黒ではっきり見えるように直して頂き、更には道路の左右両側に設置して頂いた方が良いのではと感じました。 最初は継桜から大分進むので、これは明日楽で良いななど暢気な事を考えていましたが、そうじゃなくなってアチャーでした。 お宿自体はゆっくりと寛げて良く休め、翌日の巡礼も順調に進みました。 中辺路は出だしの滝尻王子からはかなりきついですが、引き返す方が大変なので少しずつ進むと後は比較的楽に進め、大変楽しく良い経験が出来ました。 病みつきになって、多分何度も行く事になるだろうと思いました。次回は8月末から9月初旬までに行きたいと思っております。 戻ってから見ましたら、「ゲストハウスMUI」は冬季以外の時期は単身お断りになっておりましたが、予約が入っていなければ一人でも受けて頂けるのでしょうかか？

中辺路歩き
滝尻から歩いて高原で一泊、二泊目にこちらを利用させていただきました。とにかく食事がものすごく美味しかったです。オーナーご夫妻のホスピタリティーも素晴らしく、とても印象に残る宿になりました。ヤギのはる君とレインちゃんもおとなしくて可愛かったです。

滝尻から歩いて夕刻に到着しました。待っていたのは予想以上の美味しい夕食と翌日のルートについての的確なアドバイス。おかげで無事熊野古道を歩き通せました。 朝の全粒粉のパンも美味しかった。 又泊まりに行きたい宿です。

これぞオ・モ・テ・ナ・シ
タイトル少し古かった（笑）。 いや、もう兎に角、お世話になってばかりでした。翌日が荒天予報で、中辺路後半ルートの相談に親身になって乗って頂き、さらにワープ先までクルマで送って頂き、大変助かりました。この日は自分一人だけでしたが、９割は海外のお客だそうで、その話やスペイン・サンチアゴ巡礼のお話等、色々教えて頂き、寂しさ皆無で楽しかったです。 そして！何よりもお料理！和洋折衷の手の込んだ物で品数豊富。お盆に９品、後から熱々で出してくれるメイン２品。その後、味噌汁、デザートの抹茶アイスまで存分に味わえました。 朝食の、焼き立てフカフカの天然酵母パン！噛めば噛むほどもちもちお餅みたいで、山道歩きのパワーの源になりました。そうそう！昼食用の弁当もボリューム満点！絶品でした。至れり尽くせり。おもてなし大満足でした。

楽しいごはんタイム
地元素材を使ったおかみさんの創作料理がたいへん美味しかった。 そしてご主人の熊野、そしてスペインとフランスのカミーノのお話も興味深く聞かせていただいた。 食堂でご一緒したご夫婦とも交流できて、素敵な時間を過ごさせていただいた。 ご主人夫妻の熊野への愛が感じられ、よき滞在となった。 ご用意してくれたお弁当もこれまたたいへん美味しかった。

宿泊施設については料理も含め満足しています。庭のヤギさんには、思ってもいない出迎えで驚かされました。 ただ、宿泊場所が決まるのに時間がかかり過ぎる気がします。ネットでその場で確認できる環境が一般的な中でスピード感が不足していると思います。 確定に1週間というのは事情があるのでしょうが、問題を感じています。

とても良かった
滝尻王子から継桜王子まで歩いた後、ヘロヘロになってたどり着いた。16：00のチェックインまで30分以上、時間があったが、気持ちよく迎え入れてくれた。部屋は２つだけで２組の客しか泊まれない。肉や魚はなかったが、料理の品数はとても多くておいしい。地元の野菜を上手に使っており、本当に手間をかけていると実感し感謝。朝食も出来立てのパンが美味しかった。翌日は熊野本宮大社まで歩くので、弁当をお願いしたが、このおにぎりがとても美味しかった。ただ、朝食が7:00からで、歩き始めた時間が予定より遅くなったので、本宮着が遅くなり、予定していたバスに乗り遅れてしまった。その点で融通をきかせてもらったら、と思った。

ホスピタリティ最高なまた泊まりたいお宿
雨だったこともあり、近露まで車で迎えにきてくださいました。道中は熊野古道をできるだけ走ってくださり、さらに色んな歴史を教えて下さいました。 山の中の民宿なので覚悟していましたが、その心配は全くなくお部屋はとても清潔にされており、お風呂も古いですが広くて快適。 そしてなんと言っても食事が美味しいです。和風と洋風の合わさった多様なメニューで、すっかりエネルギーを満たせました。 ご主人も奥様もニコニコ、柔らかい物腰でお話ししてくださり、とっても安心できました。人懐こい2匹のヤギちゃんたちもとても可愛かった。 また是非泊まりたいと思えるお宿でした。

食事がおいしくてびっくり‼️
雨の中、やっと着いたところを丁寧かつ親切に対応していただきました。お部屋は十分広く快適です。そして何よりこんな山奥でこんな素晴らしい食事に感動しました！お聞きすると簡単に手に入るもので作られてるとのこと、びっくりしました。また、オーナーの方がとても親切で楽しく過ごす事が出来ました。2匹のヤギも人なっこくて可愛いです。また、こちらに来た時は是非泊まりたいと思います。

The Food!!!!
The stand out thing about Guest House Mui is the food. Amazing. I live in Tokyo, but at Guest House Mui I had one of the best Japanese meals I have ever eaten. The guest house is about 40m from the main walking route. It is easy to find, and its exact location is shown on the maps provided by Kumano Travel and on Google Maps - just pay more attention than I did! Unusually for the trail, the house has a very useful downstairs seating area with free flowing tea and coffee. This is a very nice place to relax and cool down pre-dinner. And what a dinner. As I said above the food is amazing; and looking through the guest book its clear that everyone who has been there thinks the same. The meal alone would have cost more in Tokyo than my entire stay did. The room was nice and had the best air-con of my trip. As I was there in a very hot July this was appreciated. The next day I had my longest walk - to Yunomine Onsen. The trail for a couple of km from the guest house runs along the road - relatively dull walking - and the owner kindly ran me to the trailhead next morning. As there are diversions on the walk (I am writing in 2020) there was some uncertainty about exactly how far I had to go, or how long it would take, and this kindness made a big difference.

Basic but spacious room. Toilet and bath facilities ok. However, what made a stay here very special was the owners' friendly service and delicious food served in lovely surroundings. The food greatly exceeded expectation and was obviously prepared with great pride, skill and attention to detail. Again, the bento box contained meat although I had specified vegetarian food.

Spotless Bed & Breakfast with Amazing Food
Everything other reviewers have said about this place is true. We stayed here because we wanted to hike a little further than Chikatsuya to make the hike the next day to Yunomine Onsen a little shorter. The hosts were welcoming, the food was amazing, and the goats were adorable. The host offered to drive us a few kilometers up the Kumamo Kodo in the morning which eased our hike that day. Definitely get a packed lunch for the next day. Well worth the money.

広い部屋、清潔なシーツ、美味しいお食事。 リビングルームでコーヒーやお茶を頂きながら本も読めてすっかり寛ぎました。 お弁当付きプランにしたのですが、お弁当を開けてびっくり！ 可愛らしいお弁当箱にぎっしり美味しそうなおにぎりとおかずが入っていました。主人は美味しい美味しい、とペロリと平らげましたが、私は食べきれませんでした。 が勿体ないので、おやつに食べました。 トイレが水洗だったら良いのになあ〜。 お風呂も少し狭かったかな？ それ以外は本当に良かったです。 ありがとうございました。

Guest House Mui hosts provided us with the best meal we had in Japan served in a special little dining area separate from the house. The bedding was the most comfortable of all of the traditional Japanese style we experienced during our travels. Our hosts were very hospitable and assisted us with planning the last leg of our walk, including transporting us to our starting point in the morning. We loved our hosts goats and their world map and the name tags in Japanese writing they made for us. We would highly recommend Guest House Mui.

We really enjoyed our stay at Guest House MUI, especially the dinner and breakfast offered by the host. Overall the basic amenities are good and convenient, yet we noted the rooms are a little bit cold and the heating machine provided makes some noise that may prevent a good sleep for those who are light sleepers.

a bed , a meal and 2 goats.
This would not have been our first choice, but since we did not have a choice it was fine. Unfortunately there is no view and you will have to share the outside area with two goats. The landlord asks for extra money if you want to use a towel which comes across a little inhospitable. They also did not provide yukata's. The food was superb and in the end the landlord was so nice as to drive us to a spot some 6 km along the trail.

Nice stay
The owners are friendly and helpful, the food was so good and we had a nice time at dinner in a warm and cosy room next to the main house, chatting with the owner and the other guests and music in background. Good breakfast too with homemade bread and good coffee! The bathroom is located on a separate unit of the house, at same temperature as outside, so in november it is a bit challenging to undress there, but once you use hot water its fine. The main source of heating in the guesthouse are oil heaters located in bedrooms and living room, it works very well to heat fast, but the smell is very, very strong.

Amazing hospitality and food!
We had a wonderful first night here. Not a bad walk from Tanabe if you are in shape and start early. The food was probably the best of our entire walk and the hospitality was incredible. I left my glasses behind, not realizing until 2 nights later, and the host drove them to my new accomodations that night - so kind! They have a pilgrim spirit.

Loved this guesthouse!!
We absolutely loved our stay at Guesthouse MUI!! The hosts were so friendly and kind, and they seemed to be genuinely interested in us and in making our time on the Kumano Kodo special. The house was spotless and the futons were comfortable. The food was amazing!! One of the best dinners and the best breakfast we had in Japan (even freshly baked bread in the morning!). They even drove us a few kilometres down the road to start our walk, so that we could make it to Hongu and then on to Yunomine onsen in good time. I would highly recommend this guesthouse!

We booked this place as it fell halfway along our trip from Tajiki-Oji to Hongu along the Kumano Kodo. Other options would have made our second day much longer. We had great communication with the guesthouse before we arrived in Japan, using the Kumano travel system. Our hosts were brilliant, clearly used to receiving weary hikers. The room was clean and spacious and the food was amazing. Really well prepared japanese food, lovely evening meal, breakfast with fresh baked bread and a great packed lunch. There was a well stocked bar and donuts to buy to take with you. Highly recommended.

A smaller guesthouse with a more intimate and personal service from the wonderful hosts. I really enjoyed my stay here. The hosts were so friendly and helpful. Wonderful welcoming guest house with incredible food... even vegetarian!!
Staying at Mui was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Run by a really lovely couple, we found a warm welcome and a very comfy room. The futons were thick and the best we slept on in Japan ( I lived in Japan cor 2 years and slept on a lot of thin, hard futons... these ones are fabulous!). The bath facilities were extremely clean and well-appointed. The location was perfect. But the food... ohhhhhhhh, such bliss!!!!! Our expectations were low when we completed the booking form and wrote 'vegetarian'. The reality was a delicious feast of subtly flavoured dishes which left us amazed, satieted but not 'heavy', and wowed by the cooking talents of our hosts. In 2 years in Japan, I never ate such incredible vegetarian food. Being served in a charming dining room just added to the experience. Extremely highly recommended!

A warm welcome and outstanding food
This delightful guesthouse with two guest rooms is just off the Nakahechi route and easy to find - look out for the goats! We had a warm welcome from the friendly host. The room and facilities are fairly basic but clean, however the main reason to stay here is the food - the dinner was one of the best meals we had in Japan and the breakfast was fantastic too including homemade bread. This was our second choice for accommodation in Nonaka but in the end we were delighted to have stayed here. Highly recommended.

Great guesthouse experience
We had a wonderful stay here and the host was super friendly and provided us with delicious homemade meals. The location is ideal if you’re planning to hike from takijiri to Hongu. It was raining and we were able to check in early, which was greatly appreciated. They were a very kind couple and we appreciate their hospitality.

Second night on the trail, and the best meals of the whole experience. If I could give six stars for the meals I would. Ingredients, technique, portion sizes and variety of tastes were all exceptional, so you could go for the food alone. On top of that was a warm welcome and smiles all round, a boot drier for our rain soaked footwear, comfortable bedding in an air conditioned room, a simple bath, and two friendly goats. Highly recommended.

Best Supper Of Them All!
Wonderful hosts and the best supper of all the places I stayed during my hike of the Kumano Kodo. Comfortable, quiet, decent shower/soaking tub and nice common area. My only criticism is the bathroom; it smelled bad and is definitely in need of an update/remodel.

Very nice hosts
We really enjoyed our stay at Guest House MUI. The hosts are very kind, the rooms are large and clean and there is a nice communal area. Good stay in a nice place on the Kumano trail
All was nice, the owner was really nice and helpful. Nonaka is a small place and there are no services like stores or vendings. The room was spacious and the common room nice and welcoming. All was very clean. Only problem was the toilet, very small and bad smelling.

Nonaka guest house
Situated on the trail so very handy. A rustic and comfortable guest house with 2 traditional Japanese rooms. The absolutely outstanding aspect of Mui is the food. It is quite exceptional and our party of 5 all agreed that we were served our best meal we had during our travels in Japan; quite exceptional. The goats at to the experience. Who doesn't love a goat...
Guesthouse MUI had some of the best food we experienced on the entire trail. The hosts were wonderful and even offered to drive us a little further up the trail (which we totally took them up on). The room was clean and comfortable. No onsen but there is shared access to a clean bathroom. Lovely experience!

A great place to stay after our first long and hard day on the Kumano Kodo hike - 19kms from Takajiri-Oji to Tzugizakura. Comfortable and spacious room, lovely communal seating area and a separate traditional dining area where food was served. All meals were absolutely delicious, carefully prepared and beautifully presented. Hosting was to a very high standard, very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay at the MUI guesthouse. The hosts were charming, the food incredibly good and their goats were just adorable. As the farthest along guesthouse on this leg, it really helped to make the last day to Hongu easier.

Memorable experience
The host couple is absolutely amazing, friendly and helpful. The house is located 100 meters from the Kumano Kodo trail and very easy to find. The room is very basic Japanese bedroom; just futon bed and thats it. The toilet and bedroom are also very simple, but top clean both of them. The meals I ate there were wonderful and culinary highlight of my Japan trip. Both supper and breakfast were full of interesting tastes and served estethically. I would return back to this guesthouse even though the bedroom itself is not that special, but I slept there like a baby after hiking. The place is perfect choice for a female solo traveller.

Amazing meal at a great guest house
We loved our stay just past Tsugizakura-oji for our second night on the Kumano Kodo. A particular highlight was the amazing dinner (and breakfast with freshly baked bread)! We also loved meeting the goats and learning the Kanji for our names.

Nice, clean and cozy house. The Japanese style room is big enough for one or two persons. The owners are very nice and helpful. The food was homemade by the owner and served in a private dinning area in Japanese style (loved it!!!!). Ideal stop before walking the trail to Hongu area. Nearest bus stop is the Nonaka Ipposugi. The owner was kind enough to drop me off at the busstop. Thank you for a wonderful stay, hospitality and good food!!!

We had an excellent stay here in this small guesthouse. Our hosts were very welcoming and spoke very good English. Our room and the guest house were very clean and the food was really delicious. Whilst there was a small inside bath the showering arrangements were fine and worked well for the guests. There are no en suite rooms. A very quiet place to stay where we were made very welcome. Great place to stay along the trail!
We had a great one night stay here while hiking the Nakahechi trail. This guest house is further along the trail than most, which worked out well for our hiking plans (we were able to more evenly split the distance between day 1 and 2 of our hike). I fell in love with this place
I adore Guest House MUI. The hosts were really welcoming and kind. The meal was phenomal (and I cannot emphasize this enough). Wonderful experience
Mui is located right on the Kumano Kodo trail so has an excellent location if you are starting your hike from Takiriji. There are only two rooms so book well in advance. There is a comfortable lounge area, the bedrooms are traditional Japanese style. Everything is spotlessly clean. The hosts are extremely welcoming and helpful, and excellent cooks, the evening meal was the best I had in Japan. Overall, a great experience.

It is a simple guest house, nothing special from the facility point of view. What makes it our best stay along our Kumano Kodo experience is the hospitality and friendliness of the host couple, Masanari and Kumi. The highlight of our holiday
This was by far the nicest place we stayed in two weeks in Japan. The welcome was warm and delightful, the food absolutely the best, and the hosts so friendly, as were their pet goats. Amazing hosts, food, and views!
The hosts were so so welcoming to our group and made us a delicious meal. The only bad part was that we arrived so late and didn't get to enjoy more time there during our hike. From the front porch you can hang with the cutest goats and stare far off into the mountains. A peaceful escape from the bigger cities along the Kumano Kodo trek.

Absolutely one of the best places in earth
It's an adorable traditional-style home located in the middle of paradise run by an adorable couple that will make you want to stay there forever. But the absolutely best part are the meals. I had the best dinner of my life there and breakfast and lunch were amazing too. To top it off they have 2 cute goats that act as dogs. So, if you're planning on doing the kumano kodo and you want to stay the night in tsugizakura, definetely check this place out.

The owners were the kindest and warmest people we've met on the Kumano Kodo. We loved the introduction video and the food was from another world. Best breakfast on the trail, without a doubt. A very unassuming guest house, MUI was a pleasant, relaxing stop along our trek. A nice warm shower and soak in the bath was perfect after a long day of walking, and the food was glorious, sharing a conversation with the other couple staying at MUI while we enjoyed it was just perfect; I would happily stay longer for just the food! The couple that run this place is very nice. The husband can speak some English, and his wife cooks amazing meals! I ate way too much that night! Somehow we managed to miss this place as the one the day before. A sign at the trail would be helpful. The reception was - how can I say - interesting. That little video is a bit too odd for my taste. And the hosts are actually very nice and fun people. The meals are simply fantastic. Everything is very modern. Great meals and facilities, but not a very warm welcome
Our feelings about spending the night at MUI guesthouse are a bit mixed. On the plus side, the rooms are nice, the beds are comfortable, the bathroom is clean and the meals are great. On the downside, it didn't feel as a very warm and hospitable place. At our arrival we had to watch an introductory video about the place with the rules of the house, which gave us the feeling as if we were schoolkids. Then we were informed that we had to pay 200 yen to rent a towel for the night. We found this very weird. It is not a cheap budget accommodation so in our view you can at least expect a free towel, especially when you are on a hike and want to carry as less as possible with you in your backpack. I could give a few more examples but these two give an idea of what I mean.

I turned up soaking wet because of the rain and was kindly allowed to check in early. The check in process was very easy with everything explained clearly. Our hosts made sure all of our wet belongings were hung up and our boots were dry for the next day. The homemade meals were amazing - the best I had the whole hike. Some things I did not like: 1. I was given a long list of rules immediately on arrival, 2. Best food I had in Japan!
The highlight of our stay had to be the food. We were cooked some amazing food by our hosts. Truly delicious Japanese traditional style dinner and breakfast. Also the homemade Plum Wine was so good. Really friendly and helpful hosts. Highly recommend.

Special place
This is the kind of homestay experience travellers hope for but don't often find: warm, honest, interactive. Kiri no Sato was professional but all business; MUI was like staying with family. If I could, I would give Reception and Service 6 and the meals too: truly special.

thank you to the owners!
after a long day in the snow this was a perfect place to relax. the food was incredible and the room comfortable. Unfortunately I fell ill during my stay here and I cannot thank the couple enough for looking after me. they allowed me to stay in bed till 11am and then dropped me to the bus stop in their car. being ill on the road is no fun but with the kindness I experienced here it made all the difference. thank you also to the people at Kumano Travel who showed concern and asked if I wanted to go to a hospital.

Relaxing and comfortable
I was a bit nervous about staying here because I was worried that communication with the host would be forced, but in the end everything was great. The hosts were kind and respected our privacy. The food was amazing and the pet goat was cute! I would definitely recommend this location for travelers!

Our best stay in Japan
The accomodatinon is small (only two guestrooms) but very personal. We felt as we were friends, who were invited to stay overnight. The food was delicios, it was the best japanese cousine we had on our whole trip. The Launch box was tasty und carefully prepared.

Love the goats
Highlights of our stay here were the wonderful couple that run the guesthouse, and of course the adorable pet goats. Dinner was great and I loved that meals are served in a separate building with tatami floors. Complaints/suggestions for improvement: our bedroom had a bit of a funny smell, and our bento lunch (a couple of onigiri rice balls) was not sufficient for what was a very long day of walking the next day - we were hungry

Wonderful food and hospitality
We very much enjoyed out stay at this new guesthouse. The food was a particular highlight - traditional Japanese food with a modern touch - we expect that this guesthouse will quickly develop a name for its great food. The meals are served in a building next to the guesthouse - the table is low with seating on the floor. The owners were very generous and friendly - lovely touches like free tea and coffee, a welcome video, and our names printed for us in kanji - and it was great fun feeding the goats. The location, about 15 minutes on from Tsukizakura-oji, is also very good for anyone looking to make the next day of walking as short as possible. The guest house is just off the trail on a road off to the right - a sign from the trail will apparently be put up soon. In keeping with its guesthouse style a small additional charge is made for towels and toothbrush if required. Thank you guesthouse MUI - we wish you all the best.

Nice home style accomodation
This place was a nice country home style accommodation. I got the impression that this is likely what most accommodations in the country side are like. Unfortunately, it was a bit too cold for my liking and I'm still not used to the Japanese style bathing areas. Also, the toilet room smelled a bit bad and I found it difficult to use because of this.

Wonderful hosts at this homely ryokan
MUI Guesthouse was our best stay on the Kumano Kodo. The hosts were warm and welcoming, friendly and took a personal interest. Kumi made us delicious meals for dinner and breakfast, with some modern takes on traditional fare. The rooms were large and comfortable. We loved the friendly goats!

Welcome mountain retreat
Our lovely hosts at guest house Mui were fabulous! We arrived drenched and cold after a long long walk in the rain and mud. They ran us a bath gave us hot towels and warm tea. They dried our boots for us and fed us amazing food. They were kind and attentive. We highly recommend this place to any traveller walking the Kumano Kodo.

The perfect place midway along the Kumano Kodo
This guest house was such a nice stop on our hike along the Kumano Kodo. The room was a spacious Japanese style room with a space heater and nice windows. The bath was good, but not extraordinary. The best part was the amazing food that we got. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly tasty and prepared with lots of care. The lunch box was nice too, but note that if you have a healthy Western appetite, it won't be enough for a full day of hiking, so keep that in mind and supplement with granola bars, chocolate, or whatever you like. The location is quite nice too, surrounded by trees and wilderness, very peaceful and serene. Also there's two cute goats living in a shed next door. The hosts are super nice. We got our names written in Kanjis as a little gift to take home.

Guest House MUI is a real gem and right on the Kumano Kodo path
It's hard to do justice to the immense kindness and hospitality of this young couple. The guest house is very recently renovated, so brand new fittings and so on throughout the house. The separate dining and kitchen area is lovely, and it's a great treat to be served a perfect meal every evening ( with beer or sake, if you like ). The food quality is exceptionally high, and is the best of all places we visited on Kumano Kodo. Thanks to the immense generosity of the host and hostess, they are willing to pick you up from the nearby bus-stop and generally go all-out to be kind and helpful. Oh, did I mention the goats ? YES, there are 2 super-cute goats. Perfect for a photo opportunity. This area is lovely and on a sunny slope, it's a dinky little village with lovely views and about 1 hour away there's a little town with a great museum, gorgeous little coffee / tea place and the usual small shops. A lovely area. MUCH recommend Guest House MUI and surrounds.

Super people, super service, super super food.
Kumi and John were lovely hosts. John drove to pick us up when we just couldn't walk anymore and were not near a bus-stop. Kumi is an amazing cook...blending Japanese esthetics with Western recipes. Best food of our trip.

Mansanari and Kumi are the perfect hosts. I had initially selected this guest house as my second choice but I'm so glad my first was full. I chose location overall in terms of my short list. I had initially wanted to stop in Chikatsuyu. But you should walk the extra way to Tsugizakura and stay here. I arrived to a very warm welcome and a bath already run for me. Perfect! My feet needed it. I had ordered dinner which was served after I settled in. MY gosh...I got so much food. It was all so tasty. I am so glad I added it to my booking. I forgot I booked brekafast too...it was equally a feast. My lunch box was filling too. I would definitely encourage you to book meals here. The guest house is warm and cost too. Mansanari and Kumi also have two beautiful pet goats. This place and the hosts are amazing. Overall my first stay of my journey on Kumano Kodo and it was the best. I also ate the most hearty here too.

A nice and welcoming guesthouse
The guesthouse is actually a couples own home, with two rooms rented out to guests. The hose is nice and the owners are extremely welcoming, they went out of their way to make us feel at home, going as far as preparing a grill for us to cook something, and even provide some bacon and some chicken skewers although dinner was. It contemplated. Great breakfast -- with home-cooked bred!
