Guesthouse × Body care and conditioning

Guesthouse Modorizenoyado is a renovated private rental house in the Wataze area of Hongu about 30 minutes walk from Wataze Onsen and 15 minutes walk from Yunomine Onsen. The owners embrace "Health Tourism," while providing a relaxing, rejuvenating stay experience with the option of body care and conditioning service for tired hikers who recently walked the Kumano Kodo. The owner worked in the United States as a certified athletic trainer for professional and college sports athletes. Recently he and his wife moved from Kyoto to live in the natural surroundings of the Hongu area. They hope to share that refreshing atmosphere with their guests. The guest room and living space are airy, comfortable settings, and there is a free kitchen for use.

The owner, a certified athletic trainer, offers paid "body care & conditioning" services.
Guests can receive these special treatments in the inn’s exercise room, which was once a cattle stable.
Those interested in the program should ask the owner directly upon check-in.

Many guests often say, "I wish I had booked another night'' because of the comfort of the inn and hospitality of the owner.

Great guesthouse with great hospitality!

We enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado a lot, we wish we could spend another night! Our host was kind enough to pick us up from Hongu and drive us to the onsen. The guesthouse is very charming with a lot of history. We had a very comfortable stay.

The best ryokan on Kumano Kodo

The guesthouse is like home away from home! Our stay here it was an experience by itself. Beautifuly renovated, with attention to detail and its 100 years history, and all the amenities of a modern home. But we were truly impressed by our hosts, Yuichi-San and Yuko-San, who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable! The barbeque dinner was delicious and the western style breakfast made for us was excellent! We just have no words to express our gratitude and emotion. People like them honors their country and make us love it and appreciate it even more. We would definitely return to stay more!

We really enjoyed our stay! Yuichi was so kind to get us from the Hongu shrine and brought us to a wonderful private onsen, going out of his way to help us have a great experience. We loved the beautiful guest house and the lovely design of the space. Our meals were exceptional and very welcome after our long day of hiking. We were so grateful to stay at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado!

Such a special day, wanted to stay longer!

Couldn’t have asked more at Modorize. Yuichi was so helpful picking us up from Hongu after a long day of hiking. The house was so thoughtfully and carefully renovated with small personal touches added like small gifts other guests had made and left. The food was incredible and even though we were very hungry there was plenty of it. The rice was particularly delicious as was the wagyu. The bentos were again very generous and Yuko made us some delicious granola as well! Such generous hearted people in a beautiful setting, what more can you wish for.

The best guesthouse on the Kumano Kodo

Arigatou gozaimasu to Yuichi and Yuko. Most beautiful, serene and peaceful guesthouse we ever stayed. We would have stayed here for 4 nights instead of changing lodging during our walk.

Kind Host, Beautiful Location and Accommodation

The host here is extremely kind and thoughtful. He picked up our group of 3 at Hongu station after we had visited the shrine. He brought our delivered bag with him so we could retrieve clean, dry clothes and dropped us directly at a public onsen. He picked us up after the baths and brought us to a private house all for us and prepared a BBQ meal for us. The next day one of our group of 3 felt ill so he offered her to stay till the afternoon, took us to the next trailhead head, then took her to a bus stop later.

The Best of the Best

Host and hostess provided shuttle from the trail, to an onsen and on to their private rental, a historical and updated villa near the river, surrounded by nature, in a tiny mountain village. Meals were delicious and optional massage (for nominal fee) was wonderful. Meeting this couple was a highlight of our 2.5 week stay in Japan. They are helpful, kind, and fun. We wished we had stayed with them longer. Do so if you can. You won't want to leave.

My husband and I stayed at the Guesthouse Modorizenoyado for our first night. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the lovely hosts. The moment we arrived, we were struck by how beautifully the noise was built and styled. You have the house to yourself and it is filled with so many details and touches that made the experience even more special. We felt instantly welcome and comfortable, making it easy to relax. Our hosts went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. It is very clear that they care about their home and the experience of their guests. The experience was absolutely lovely and our only regret was not staying more nights. We highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a beautiful, unique, and comfortable stay, paired with exceptional hospitality. We hope to visit again.

Personalized service in a quiet and serene location

We stayed 2 nights and almost cried to leave. The best beds on the whole trip, your own home, help with navigating and transportation at all turns. We even had massage and physical therapy after that long grueling leg of the hike. Overall amazing and wish we had stayed a third night. Hope you’re lucky enough to get to stay here!

One of the best (if not the best place) places along the Kumano Kodo. Yuichi and Yuko are the perfect hosts. Yuichi even took us to the private onsen in Wataze. The physio session with Yuichi was just perfect and should not be missed.

Exceptional hosts and guest house

Where do I begin? This stay was a highlight of our trip to Japan. We had a wonderful stay, perfect rest and relaxation after a long Kumano hike. Yuichi and his wife were kind and considerate, making our stay so comfortable and memorable. From shuttling us to a private outdoor hot spring to ensuring a comfortable home awaited, no detail was overlooked. I also appreciated the effort they made to ensure our meals were plant-based, and how connected they are to each of their offerings (eg, coffee beans roasted at a friend's cafe, local spring water, etc). The beds were *very* comfortable, and the entire house was a dream, with its beautiful wooden walls and ceiling and mix of traditional and modern. The porch sitting in the morning with coffee was divine. As a bonus, my husband got the Sports massage treatment and said not only did it relax him but it was educational as well for future body care. Beautiful home and beautiful people. Recommended!

Peaceful, accommodating, friendly

This was one of our favorite stays along the trail. Yuichi was very kind and offered to pick us up from the trail and take us to the onsen and then to the guesthouse. We had the entire guesthouse to ourselves. He gave us a tour of the guesthouse at the start which was helpful. He provided plenty of food for dinner. We chose the BBQ option. It was a fun dinner experience. The fridge was stocked with local drinks (alcohol and non alcohol) for purchase. We were also able to do a load of laundry. I would have happily stayed here another day and explored the area. Which I recommend if you are feeling like you need a recharge day.

Best accommodation I’ve ever experienced in my life

As we look back at the photos from our Japan trip, I realized I hadn’t yet left a review for what was probably the best accommodation I’ve ever experienced in my life. And my wife and I travel a lot. We stayed at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado last November during our Kumano Kodo hike. Although we arrived late and left early the next morning, our short stay was unforgettable. Yuichi and his wife are such great hosts that when you visit Modorizenoyado, you feel you are visiting distant relatives. Despite the brief visit, we enjoyed a nearby onsen, a delicious barbecue prepared by our hosts, a beer from a local brewery, the peaceful and welcoming premises, and even a massage from Yuichi, a certified sports masseuse. Before we left, they prepared a takeaway breakfast and kindly offered to drive us to our next starting point so we could enjoy an extra hour of rest. A wonderful glimpse into Japanese hospitality, kindness, attention to detail. Many Japanese people devote themselves to mastering their chosen path, in this case, hospitality. You are looking at a true gem.

Wonderful one night stay

Accommodation was really cozy and nice - it's like a cabin in the woods - very peaceful and relaxing. Has onsite washer/dryer for laundry (added bonus). Dinner was delicious (we had the BBQ) and host personally BBQ the meat for us. Overall, very comfortable stay - if we weren't hiking next day, it'll be nice to stay another day just to relax. In particular, the hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating. They picked up us at Hongu took us to a nearby Onsen and pick up us after, after the accommodation was ready. They even dropped us off the next day back at Hongu for our next leg of the journey. Thank you very much for such a wonderful stay!

Our best night in Japan!

We can't recommend Guesthouse Modorizenoyado enough. While we were happy with all of our stays along the Nakahechi route in March 2025, Guesthouse Modorizenoyado stood out as our most entertaining, comfortable, and memorable stay. Yuichi and Yuko were incredible hosts, picking us up at the end of a long hard day and driving us to a grocery store and a gorgeous onsen where we got a private bath so we could enjoy as a family. Yuichi and Yuko renovated the guesthouse space with so much care and attention to detail, it is as beautiful as it is comfortable. Everything is so tastefully and intentionally done, from the overall layout to the lighting and finishes on the walls. The traditional bedding was especially inviting and comfortable. We chose the BBQ dinner, which was an epic meal of grilled chicken, wagyu beef, and pork that we reminisced about daily on the rest of the hike, and even since we have arrived back home. Our child, who does not love meat, could not get enough and said that it was the best chicken he has ever had. We also loved the opportunity to have great conversations with Yuichi and to ask him some of the questions about unique things we had noticed on our hike. Yuichi was kind enough to call our final destination to inquire about our luggage delivery, as well as provide restaurant recommendations. All three of us wished that we could stay an additional night to enjoy the space, the patio with a mountain view, conversations with Yuichi and Yuko, and the monkeys playing in the trees nearby. Our stay at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado will forever stand out in our memories as our best night in Japan.

The best place we've ever stayed

From the lovingly crafted interior, to the locally sourced food and snacks, Yuichi and Yuko's place was perfect. The Guesthouse; a short walk from Yunomine Onsen, is a huge, converted structure that is ideal for a holiday. A spacious living area and well equipped kitchen greet you on entry (stocked with tasty green tea and local cakes). The shower was divine and the bedroom is neat, comfy and quiet. Dinner was a delicious hotpot and both breakfast and lunch were spot on, all locally sourced. There was an option to pay to add on sport massage (by Yuichi who is a trained sports physio) which at the end of a very long hike was just what we needed. Our hosts were friendly, helpful and all-round lovely. Would come back here in a heartbeat.

A True Hidden Gem – Unforgettable Hospitality and Warmth

Our stay at this guesthouse was nothing short of magical. We arrived late after a long day of walking, and to make things more complicated, our phone died, leaving us unsure of how to find our way. To our relief, our host had already been looking for us. We crossed paths right in front of the onsen, and from that moment, everything felt like it was meant to be. That evening, we were treated to an incredible hot pot meal – exactly what we needed after what felt like an endless hike. Every bite was comforting and delicious, and to our amusement, our toddler devoured the food like a little barbarian. It was one of those family moments we’ll never forget, made even better by the warm atmosphere around us. Yuichi and Yuko, our hosts, were absolutely wonderful. Their hospitality went far beyond what we expected. Yuko, in particular, was fantastic with our child. She clearly has a gift for working with children, engaging effortlessly and making our little one feel at home. The guesthouse even had a dedicated children’s corner, which was such a thoughtful touch. Seeing Yuko spend time playing and laughing with our toddler felt like being part of their family. The guesthouse itself was beautiful – cozy, charming, and filled with character. It felt like one of those rare places you stumble upon and immediately know is special. The space was welcoming, well-maintained, and had everything we could have needed. Another great surprise was how well both Yuichi and Yuko spoke English, making communication easy and enjoyable. We shared stories late into the evening, and it felt less like staying at an inn and more like visiting old friends. This was not just a place to sleep – it was an experience we will always cherish. If you have the chance to stay here, do it. It’s a rare gem that truly stands out, and we left feeling incredibly grateful for the time we spent there.

Can't say enough good things

This was our favorite lodging during our three weeks in Japan. If we'd had an extra night somewhere on the Kumano Kodo I'd have wanted to stay here another night. We hiked 9 hours our last day, most of it in rain, and were soaking wet and cold at the end. Yuichi picked us up and took us directly to a private onsen. Afterwards we were able to use a washer and dryer, and a shoe dryer, to he showed us around the cutest guesthouse we'd ever seen. He helped us make dinner, and he gave us incredible massages. His wife Yuko came by and brought us rice, and the next morning she brought us granola. Yuichi drove us to a couple different spots to help us collect stamps. He was an incredible house.

Don't miss out on this gem!

Yuichi and Yuko were fantastic hosts! We absolutely loved their place, and it was clear that a lot of love and care went into creating such a welcoming space. Although the location was a bit remote, Yuichi's pickup service made everything hassle-free. The free onsen tickets and delicious BBQ dinner were the perfect way to unwind after a long day of hiking. The in-house washer and dryer were a lifesaver after getting soaked in the rain. My friends couldn't believe how lucky I was to find such a great place. Don't miss out on this gem!

Yuichi was so kind - collected us from bus station and dropped us at trail head. He has renovated 100yr old guest house and it is beautiful. Itvhel8ed that re had excellent English and we had some very interesting and engaging discussions. Unimpressed that quoted 7,000 Yen to move my backpack to final destination when other relocations were only 2,500 Yen. Disappointed with meals: BBQ on first night then hot pot on 2nd. As it was my bday, greatly appreciated cooking by Yuko - very kind. Location is remote but only 15" walk to Yusomine Onsen. A very special place

The guest house was beauiful and the location was idealic. I had my breakfast on a private porch overlooking the mountains. The guest house has the beauty and charm of it's traditional origins, but with the luxuary of modern conveniences. My host made me feel like a VIP. Collecting me early and directly from Hongu, I was taken straight to a wonderful local onsen. My host even thought to bring my suitcase along so that I would have fresh clothes. The vegan bento was also delicious. It's a great location. You could easily stay for a week and use it as a base to go on many walks or see the local sites.

Great place to stay

The guesthouse was a little way out of town, but the host picked me up at the end of the hike and then arranged for me to go to an Onsen on the way home, which was very appreciated. The host is also a physiotherapist and I had a treatment which helped enormously with the aches and pains of hiking day after day. Food was sourced from a local eatery and I cooked my dinner at the accommodation. The breakfast and lunch was great. The host also drove me to the trailhead for the next day's hike.

I’m glad we decided to stay an extra night here and also try the body care. Host Yuichi is extremely friendly, always offering to shuttle us around, and making sure we feel at home. Also, Yuichi is a physiotherapist and I am glad I booked a session with him at the end of my 75km Kumano Kodo hike. The location is between two Onsen towns and we visited both. Also, there is a river down the road which you can soak on a hot day. We ordered hotpot one night and BBQ for the other. My hubby is already thinking of booking a full week the next time!

Must stay in Kumano!

One of the nicest guest houses we stayed at in whole Japan. New, spacious, nice design and very friendly hosts. The guest house is all yours, the host family lives in the neighbourhood. Make sure to book a body conditioning hour with Yuichi, he is a real professional and will answer all your questions! It is a bit far from Kumano Kodo trail, but makes it so much more private. And Yuichi will happily pick you up or drive you to the trail if needed.

Unique and beautiful guest house fully to yourself

This was the best stay of our entire Japan journey! We were so lucky to stay at the guesthouse of Yuichi. This very spacious guesthouse with a magnificent view has been carefully renovated recently. Yuichi was very communicative via whatsapp and truly cared about his guests having a perfect time. Not only the guest house itself, with all it has to offer, also the dinner arranged by Yuichi was delicious. Definitely recommend the BBQ. Yuichi even guided us to a local private onsen, which was a perfect way to relax our muscles after two days of hiking.

Favorite Accommodation on Kumano Kodo

Such a special place! This private guesthouse was restored with love by the owners and the attention to detail is incredible. Yuichi picked us up from the end of the trail on our 3rd day of hiking and delivered us to the Wataze Onsen for a much needed soak! He speaks English well and it was great to have a conversation about the area and his family experiences. We were 2 couples and we also took advantage of Yuichi's massage therapy sessions! Dinner was beautiful meats cooked over a charcoal grill outside and the fridge was stocked with sake, beer and sodas. In the morning he took us to Yunomine to visit the oldest Onsen and the old town before dropping us off at the trail. We had beautiful breakfast and lunches packed for us. Best Stay!!

A unique experience!

The refurbished guesthouse is absolutely beautiful! The modern additions to the house complement the traditional features so well. The view from the patio/porch is just lovely. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a tea while listening to the birds and other sounds of nature. Yuichi is the kindest and most helpful host. He arranged everything so well, shared with us many good recommendation, and went out of his way to make sure we had a wonderful holiday.

Excellent experience

We spent our 2nd night at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado and really enjoyed our stay. The host, Yuchi, is incredibly kind and generous. We spent part of the afternoon at Watarase Onsen and then had a BBQ, which was incredible. The guesthouse is very nice and in a peaceful location, we enjoyed having our coffee on the balcony. It's worth noting that the location requires 5-10 min driving from the main Hongu town area, but Yuchi was very accommodating with helping us get around, we'd highly recommend it!

Yuichi Is a Master

This place is very cool! The guesthouse itself is a refurbished home, just outside Yunomine Onsen. The work put into this guesthouse is impressive, and every detail has been accounted for, including lots of thoughtful choices that made sustainability a priority. Great bath and shower. The best beds we slept in throughout the hike. Fantastic kitchen area. And all along the way little artistic details, thoughtful comforts, unique snacks, and all sorts of other surprises make the experience exceptional. The food was great. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch were all delicious and memorable, and again, sustainability was considered in packaging and preparation. Yuichi, the host, is also fantastic. He was glad to pick us up and drop us off at our trailhead the next day, and he was so easy to make a connection with and glad to share his story and experiences. If you're heading to Kyoto after your hike, he may also have some great ideas to escape the crowds. Overall, this was one of our best stays of the trip, and we'd be happy to have to opportunity to come again. Thank you Yuichi and Family!

Outstanding!

Guesthouse Modorizenoyado was outstanding. Our hosts were delightful, right from the time we booked until the time we departed. Yuchi kindly picked us up from Yunomine Onsen and drove us to Guesthouse Modorizenoyado and dropped us back at the trail in the morning. The accommodation was outstanding, very stylish and clean. The food was delicious and Yuichi’s body treatment after a long day on the trail was excellent. We highly recommend Guesthouse Modorizenoyado to you!

Absolutely phenomenal place to stay

We were lucky enough to stay here while we walked the Nakahechi route with our 9 month old daughter. It was hands down the best place we stayed our whole trip, which is saying a lot! Yuichi and Yuko are wonderful hosts (interesting, friendly and kind) and we feel very pleased to have met them. The space is absolutely beautiful and so well thought out. We felt rested and so at peace after our stay. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you!!!

The Unexpected Gem

I admit I thought this accommodation was a lesser option due to its location away from the main hot-spring drive. I turned out to be incredibly wrong. THIS WAS OUR FAVORITE PLACE!! Our host met us in town and helped us buy bathhouse tickets, took our bags home and later picked us up again. When he wasn't able to take us back to town the next day, it was a 15 minute walk that worked out fine. What we LOVED was both the private guesthouse and the company. Yuichi is a healer and Yuko is an artist and together they strike a beautiful balance of hospitality, authenticity, creativity and ease. They sat with us and talked for over an hour and we finally got to ask all of the questions that we had about Japanese culture. Yuko's artistic style was evident in the small, decorative personal touches and we hired Yuichi's Sports medicine skills for an hour..which after hiking was helpful. Traveling in a country and not connecting with the people is not anywhere as amazing as when we do connect. Meals are hired out to a local bento business and it was tasty. I woke up early and sipped on Yuko's roasted tea on the deck and listened to a forest of birds. We love love love Guesthouse Modorizenoyado and the folk within it. You'd be lucky to stay here.

Plenty of privacy in the space and owner was able to pick you at your convenient location within Hongu or Yunomine Onsen area. If i have done more research i would stay for another day in this beautiful place and explore the area more.

Great first night

We had an amazing night staying at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado. After a very hot afternoon hike to Yunomine, we had an amazing night stay at Guesthouse Modorizenoyado. Being able to visit the onsen, then coming back and having a BBQ dinner with a beer was just what we needed. We loved that this was a renovated old house, it retains the charm of the original build while upgrading all the modern conveniences such as aircon and bathroom. The hosts Yuichi and Yuko were super friendly and helpful and made the stay feel very special and we wished we had planned for another night here on our itinerary. We can't say thank you enough for welcoming us to your guesthouse.

So generous and warm

Yuichi and Yuko are such kind generous helpful hosts. They went out of their way repeatedly to ensure we had the best possible experience. We can’t thank them enough. Yuichi picked us up from Hongu Taisha on our arrival after a long 24 km walk for which we were so grateful. After a fabulous hotpot dinner he took us to Yunomine onsen to ease the aches. Even after we left they gave us helpful hints and sent us on our way with the very best lunch bento box and granola for a snack. Modorizenoyado is a stand alone, renovated old house in a serene, beautiful location surrounded by trees and birds. This really is a special place to stay.

Amazing hospitality

Yuichi and Yuko are the kindest hosts. We felt very welcomed and well-looked after during our stay, and felt they went above and beyond in their hospitality. The lodging was very stylish, spacious and clean with lovely touches like coffee-making facilities and sweet treats for the evening. The futon beds were the most comfortable we slept in while in Japan. It was wonderful to experience the Yunomine Onsen - Yuichi even brought us towels and an entry ticket as part of our stay. He kindly picked us up from the onsen and dropped us to the bus stop the next day too. We loved it and highly recommend it to anyone!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Yuichi and Yuko at Guesthouse Midorizenoyado. The guesthouse is lovely, with many small, charming details. Yuichi and Yuko are very thoughtful and helpful. We really appreciated Yuichi picking us up in Yuomine Onsen and dropping us off the next morning. Such a beautiful location on the river. We also enjoyed having massages with Yuichi - perfect rest stop on the Kumano Kodo!

10/10 accommodation

Yuichi and Yoko’s place is perfect if you enjoy being with nature and enjoy a very spacious comfortable place. Yuichi speaks perfect English and we were made sure our stay would be comfortable. Both of them are so friendly and so welcoming. The guesthouse is around 15 minutes walk from Yumino Onsen’s main area but they offer free drop offs and pick ups if required. We were so glad we chose their place. The guesthouse was spotless, comfortable and all the small details very well thought out. The sky was the clearest starry sky we have ever seen! Before we left, Yoko also packed us so snacks for our hike. Thank you so much for having us. We will definitely come back here if we travel to the area again.

A wonderful place with fantastic hospitality

After 3 amazing weeks in Japan we were lucky enough to end our trip with 3 days in Yuichi and Yuko’s wonderful guesthouse. The location is stunning, situated in a beautiful tranquil valley with eagles soaring overhead, deer in the forest and monkeys to wake us up in the morning. The house is a wonderful combination of traditional Japanese with all the modern comforts you could possibly need. The bbq meat and Japanese hotpot were fantastic, washed down with local craft beer, plum wine and sake. Free tickets were provided to the nearby onsen - great after trekking on the Kumano Kodo. Perhaps the best thing though was the amazing hospitality of Yuichi and Yuko who went out of their way to make us feel at home. Couldn’t have hoped for a better end to our trip! Thank you!!!

Incredible stay at guesthouse Modorizenoyado

Our night at Yuichi and Yuko’s place in Yunomine Onsen was hands down our favorite evening in Japan. Their guesthouse is a beautifully designed home in the heart of the Japanese countryside. We ordered the barbecue dinner and rice ball breakfast and both were delicious. It’s clear how much Yuichi & Yuko care about their guests — Yuichi drove us to the start of the Kumano Kodo trail the morning after our stay, and Yuko supplied us with lemon cake for our hike. Our favorite part of our stay, though, was having the opportunity to talk with our hosts and learn more about their life in Japan. We wish we could have stayed at their guesthouse longer!

Best place we stayed at in Japan!

Yuichi went out of his to make our stay excellent - he drove over to give us towels and free passes to the Yu-nomine onsen baths! The only (minor) complaint would be that the house is a bit far away from any of the towns, but you can take buses etc or Yuichi gave us a ride as well, so it wasn't a problem. In the end that is actually part of what makes it nice. You are in this private, beautiful little house, with a nice kitchen, bathroom and two great tatami rooms for sleeping, plus so many cute touches everywhere. Both Yuichi and his wife Yuko were super welcoming and helpful. Plus they had very good wifi even for being out near the Kumano Kodo! We walked down to the river and actually went swimming in the clear and beautiful water. It was so nice, we actually regretted that we hadn't decided to spend more time there. Would HIGHLY recommend you stay here.

Wonderful 3 days at Yuichi and Yuko

We spent 3 days at Yuko and Yuichi's place and it was wonderful. The house is located very close to the river, in the nature, at 15 min walking distance from Yunomine onsen (they can help with the transportation if needed). The place was entirely renovated very recently and is very comfortable. It makes it a wonderful place where to stay during the time you will spend in the region. We recommend to stay a few days. Yuichi and Yuko are very kind hosts who will do everything they can to accomodate and help you.
