 Description

Lovely Log House

Hoshizora-no-Yado is a homestay in the west-end of the Takahara settlement along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.

This beautiful log house was custom made for Mr. Nishiyama who personally spent 1.5 years searching for the best timber.  He wants to share his personal retreat with visitors from around the world; meeting new people is his motivation for starting this homestay business.  The open-style architecture showcases the giant rafters.  There is a sitting area, elevated tatami room, and kitchen. The toilet and wooden bath are in an attached building.

Surrounding the house is an ume orchard and just above the house is a clearing with beautiful views.

Meals are made and served in the house.  2 rooms, 3 people maximum.  Guestrooms are smaller partitions in the main living room with sliding paper doors with no locks.  The basement room is down a steep staircase.

Excellent option

Comfortable place, beautiful building, a perfectly good supper & very good bath. Great location. That said, we probably liked this a tiny bit less than all the other excellent stays. Why? It was the most expensive and least good value. The place and the owner give you a little less privacy than the other places we stayed in (the owner did not leave after supper for a long time) and we booked it just for us two. You couldn't for example make your own cup of English tea in the morning - had to ask the owner who doesn't want you in the kitchen. The lunch box was also very basic.

no recommended/refund is hereby requested

Despite paying the same fee as a 3 star hotel in Osaka and Tokyo, the facilities were abysmal, no privacy was afforded, and the staff was even worse. The owner speaks no English and repeatedly indicated annoyance to paying guest for showing up at 3 p.m. This lodging should not be recommended to anyone and this price charged is unacceptable. Complaint filed with Kumano Travel was ignored. FULL REFUND IS REQUESTED.

Incredible accommodation and hospitality

The guesthouse was in very close proximity to the trail. The house is beautiful with a bath overlooking the mountains. The stars were incredible. Bed was very comfortable. The host, Ichiro, was very hospitable and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious! Could not asked for a better first night on the trail.

My favorite stay the entire trip

Hoshizora-no-Yado is incredible. The surrounding cherry blossoms were jaw dropping. Ichiro-sensei's plum wine was homemade THE BEST. I would absolutely come by. Everything was perfect. Thank you, Ichiro-sensei!

Nice first stop

This was a nice lodging with a kind and warm host. The sleeping room is in the middle of the home and is separate from the bathroom and the sitting area. The dinner was excellent. While a very pleasant stay, this lodge seemed overpriced compared to the others we stayed at on our walk.

Ichiro and Yoko were so funny, friendly, warm, accommodating, and generally good-natured. They prepared us excellent meals, gave us a wonderful place to store our things and sleep, and made us feel right at home in an area on the other side of the world from our house.

A Great Place to Stay

A warm and cheery welcome, a bath made ready for us, and fantastic food, Hoshizora-no-yado was a great place to stay. Our only challenge was the heat and humidity at night - we were in the upstairs tatami room with no air-conditioning, and the heat made sleeping a bit difficult. I think it was unsually hot however, and should not be an issue most of the year. The food here was some of the best we had!

Lovely guesthouse in Takahara

We were warmly greeted and welcomed by our host and he ran a beautiful bath for us on arrival. The futons were comfy and warm. The 3 of us occupied 2 rooms and there were only shoji separating the rooms from each other and the kitchen so there would have been a lot of noise transfer and less privacy if there were 2 separate groups staying. Dinner was amazing and plentiful, breakfast was lovely, however the lunch only consisted of 2 very small rice balls and a mikan (mandarin) which was inadequate so we were glad we had some additional food and snacks with us. Shame about the amount of plastic packaging with the meals, though. Overall, we were happy with our stay. Thank you!

Amazing yado to start the route

We stayed here for our first night on the Kumano Kodo trek. Ichiro-san was so friendly and hospitable, and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. As soon as we arrived, he prepared a lovely bath for us where we had a relaxing soak while watching a beautiful sunset. Afterwards, we got to enjoy a spectacular Japanese style dinner with a view of the mountains in a private room. The scent of the cypress wood throughout the inn is so relaxing and my favorite part.

From the moment we stepped into his beautiful home, the host treated us kindly. First he led us to the magnificent o-furo where he had the tube ready for soaking. Then he served us an enormous dinner of high quality delicious food. And we slept so well on our futon. Breakfast was delicious too. Our o-bento was simple but nourishing. Thank you so much for the hospitality. We really loved this place.

Our First night stop on the Kumano - Team Ellis

Our hosts were amazing host. This was not our first choice and cost more than our other choice. But the increase was worth it. 5 stars for everything bar the meals. The evening and breakfast meals were outstanding, but we gave 4 stars as the lunch box was the most basic we received on the whole trek I'm afraid. Substantial, but not very exciting. We received a very warm welcome, the Japanese style rooms & bath was an awesome experience being our first proper night on the trek. Good Wifi! 100% recommend. Thank you Gero, take care!!! Beautiful little place up on a hill

A very cozy accommodation with probably the most luxurious bath-view I have ever had in my entire life. We had the basement room, which was spacious and new, but also quite dark. The meals were delicious, though communication was at times a little bit of a challenge. All in all a very pleasant stay and we really appreciated the short-term help in organising a luggage transfer over to our next stop, because it made a challenging hike much more enjoyable.

Friendly host and amazing dinner.

Lovely high-end home carefully maintained and surrounded by orchards. Our host didn’t speak any English but was enthusiastic and friendly. Beautiful wooden bath with lovely views. Incredible dinner. The best meal of the journey. Bedroom a bit stuffy (hot) but otherwise very comfortable. My only complaint was the quality of the lunchbox. The worst I had on the Kumano trail even though it was the highest price I paid for accommodation.

Hoshizora-no-Yado is an amazing first stop on the route from Takajiri, and I felt like a privileged guest thanks to the lovely hosts' efforts. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

Great first night on our Kumano Kodo hike

Really nice guesthouse, perfect for our first night on the Kumano Kodo, with a very hospitable welcome including hot tea and biscuits. Room was traditional, clean and comfortable. The bath was very nice with a spectacular view of the mountains out of the window. Dinner and breakfast were really great, with lots of good food. The only comment we would have is that the lunch box could have been more substantial, as it was just a couple of rice balls and an orange. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly!

Lovely Stay

Lovely guest house on the Kumano Kodo. We were aware from previous reviews that the guest room was adjacent to the kitchen and other guest room so perhaps not as private as some might expect. However this did not bother us. Hosts were kind and helpful.

Guesthouse in Takahara

Wow, everything here was exceptional. Our host was so funny and gracious. Google translate helped with communications but this host was great! The evening meal was a top notch feast beautifully prepared and presented and I have never had such excellent coffee in the morning. It made my instant coffee taste like dirt in comparison. We watched the lunar eclipse from the front garden then slept very well in this log guest house with vaulted wood beam ceilings and good energy wood features including the soaking bath with a vista view of the mountains. His homemade plum wine was the topper to an excellent evening and warm rice ball with umeboshi inside for lunch to go. We were honored to be two of the 3 guests that stayed that night. Thank you.

One of the best parts of our journey!

Hoshizora-no-Yado is easily one of the best accommodations we ever stayed in. It's located in a small community in the mountains right next to the woods, so expect it to be very quiet when you stay here by yourself. Although it's a log house in a remote area, the whole place was squeaky clean, no dirt or insects to be found. We were very warmly welcomed by the host and his wife, who showed us around and went right to preparing our dinner. And what a dinner it was! We actually didn't expect it to be THAT much, but we were essentially offered a delicious, homemade five course meal and weren't able to finish everything even after a whole day of walking. Our beds were made in a cozy tatami room that sat in the middle of the place. The bath was simple but very hot and relaxing. After a very quiet night, the host came early in the morning to prepare breakfast for us at the time we agreed upon the day before. It was just the right amount of toast, egg and coffee to get us started for the day. He then gave us our bento and we went on our way.

Incredible first night on the Kumano Kodo. Ichiro-san is a warm and friendly host. The house is beautiful, overlooking plum trees and mountains. The meals were outstanding, just amazing, the only problem being it was so much food that I couldn’t finish. I can’t recommend this place highly enough.

My favorite guesthouse

I loved this guesthouse, it was my very favorite. The host Ichiren (?) and his wife Naomi were so hospitable and welcoming. She made the best meal I had the entire vacation, using local plants in the tempura. He taught me about the seasonal flower Higenbana and made sure I had a wonderful stay. I hope to come back some day!

Great homestay

Lovely little homestay. The owners kept us well-fed and comfortable, the views were amazing and at night it was a great star gazing spot. As it was in a very rural area there were a lot of big insects/spiders around so if, like me, you’re not comfortable with these be prepared. It didn’t spoil my stay though. It really is a perfect spot when hiking the Nakahechi trail.

An amazing respite from the kumano hike. The owner and his wife work hard to make you feel at home and it doesn’t matter that they don’t speak English. The view is the main attraction which you can enjoy while in the shower! The home made food is a feast for the senses.

Feel welcome, comfortable and spoilt.

This is a beautiful, owner-built guest-house nestled in a Umi Plumb orchard. It accommodates just four people largely two couples. But from the time you arrive you are spoilt for hospitality, food and serenity. Our meals were served in a small separate dining area and beautifully prepared by the owner and his wife. The breakfast had a mixed Japanese/western combination which was thoughtful and generous. The lunch included rice and Japanese treats with tea. We had time to wander around Takahara and talk with locals, all of whom were keen to talk despite rusty English and no Japanese. It is very easy to trek the next leg to Tsugizakura or wander down to the bus and catch it to Chikatsuyu village and backtrack to Gyuba-doji Statue then visit the beautiful Art Gallery, explore the town, have iced coffee and wander the trail to the magnificent Nonaka-no-Ipposugi Cedar Trees, have tea, cake, mandarines and lollies and friendly conversation with the lady manning manning the Toganoki-jaya Teahouse. Before wandering down to the Spring and pondering the cherry trees. We saw snakes, deer, falcons and beautiful flowers on this leg.

Beautiful timber cottage, great food and friendly service

My stay didn't start well. I arrived at 3:00 - when I said I would be arriving and from when I read I could 'check-in'. But there was no one about and no one answered my calls. Eventually I found the owner Mr Nishiyama in the annex. I was suffering from the heat so was probably too quick to get annoyed. He wisely gave me a jug of cold water and left me to recover in the cool of the lovely verandah. The building is set within an orchard and just off the walking trail from Takijiri. A picturesque setting overlooking the mountains and very convenient. The building itself is a modern Japanese style log cabin. The exposed timber rafters are amazing. My room was a tatami mat room with shoji screens on three sides - so little privacy if that is what you are after. It was comfortable though. A couple had a room downstairs but I didn't see it. We shared the same bathroom. The bathroom had a wonderful view but we only used the shower and weren't really given the choice of the bath. Mr Nishiyama cooked us a huge meal for both dinner and breakfast - he obviously loves cooking and is a very good cook. I also loved his special tea mix. Other than the mix up at the beginning, the service was excellent and very welcoming.

Your own custom home for a night

It is a beautiful new house in an Ume orchard built with large timber posts in the traditional style. We were the only guests and there seems to be just one sleeping room. It was as if it was our private house as we had bath, dining, sleeping and terrace to ourselves. Dinner was ample and well made tempura. Only the lunch let us down, very little other than rice. Our host who was very welcoming spoke just enough English for us to get by. The location is a bit before Takahara so it makes for a very short first day which worked well as we also traveled from Osaka that day.

Lovely couple that’s like mom and dad!

Absolutely love this place as my first accommodation on the Kumano Kodo. I started the hike later (2PM) as I was coming from Kyoto. So it was a short hike which is good cause the beginning of the trail gets right down to business with a steep climb. Easy the find and one of the first accommodation you see when you enter the town. Owners were like mum and dad. They walked me down the driveway and a bit on the trail the next morning to see me off. Such a cute couple.

Our favourite host!

This was a beautiful, quaint home with so much to offer. We were welcomed by a couple who made us feel very at home. They provided us with tea and chocolates after our first day of walking. While they did not speak much English, we found it very easy to communicate with them. Before providing us with one of the best meals of our lives, each of us took a bath and changed into a yukata. We were provided with 2 separate rooms to accommodate our group of 4. We had the whole place to ourselves which was a nice touch. The next morning we were provided with a delicious breakfast. Our hosts saw us off and wished us to be safe. We would definitely recommend staying here!

It was an incredibly comfortable stay and the dinner was sensational. Ichiro was an incredibly kind and thoughtful host. Only wished we had been blessed to have clear skies to see the stars that the place is famous far (and hence its name Hoshizora) - maybe another visit is warranted? Would love to go back!

Extremely friendly and amazing food

From the first moment when we arrived we felt right at home, even if there were some language difficulties (Google translate helped). It's a stunningly beautiful house and the food was amazing (especially dinner), we will never forget this stay, the stargazing and wonderful company.

Charming and Unique Lodging

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Hoshizora-no-Yado. This uniquely hand crafted house is conveniently located right along the Kumano Kodo trail on the way into Takahara. Warm and friendly hospitality from Ichiro-san and Yoko-san. We were welcomed with a snack and a cold drink. We had an excellent dinner, a good night's sleep and breakfast made for a great start to our next day on the Kumano.

Location is good along the way of the trail, easy to find. We were warmly welcomed by the host and were very happy with our stay. Dinner and breakfast were also very delicious and well prepared.

Great experience in a lovely wood-house

This house is beautiful, directly on the Kumano-kodo path, but a bit far from the Takahara village. The owner is really great, he did is best so that we felt confortable. Even if we didn't speak the same language we could arrange some details and had some laught. The house by itself is beautiful and is worth the stay.

This was a nice accommodation however we did not realise we would share the house including the bathroom with the owners. The owners stayed up late and the upstairs room had no ceiling and so it was impossible to sleep until they retired to their bed in the garage. Food was fantastic.

Very nice meals, very nice people and amazing bath. The bento box could be improved by adding more than rice balls.

Mr. Nishiyama definitely love his log house. We can feel the attention he has put in its construction. It is one of the most beautiful place we stayed in Japan.

Unforgettable experience, such wonderful hosts

This was an unforgettable stay, our hosts are absolutely wonderful people whom we will remember fondly for many years to come. It really was quite an experience as our hosts did not speak any english at all. Thank you google translate! This really was a genuinely great experience, even as things were lost in translation we were able to have a wonderful chat and learn about how this impressive wooden house was built (using no nails), where the wood came from, etc. Two things especially stood out; 1. Our hosts cooking, she is really a master chef. It was a wonderful dinner and breakfast. 2. The bath. Overlooking the valley with the sunset on the horizon on a wooden tub really was one of our best bathing experiences in japan. I would recommend to anyone to spend a night here, get to know the wonderful hosts and experience everything this place has to offer.

A Delightful Stay in a Beautiful House

We stayed at this house for only one night but it was enough for us to fall in love. The house is absolutely beautiful, there is a spacious bath and the futons/bedding were very comfortable. Upon arriving at the house, we received a warm reception from Mr Nishiyama and his wife. We were treated to a snack and a taste of their plum juice (there are many plum trees surrounding the house). The next morning, even though we had to depart at 7am, Mr Nishiyama and his wife woke up early to see us off, after making us coffee. Such a lovely and kind couple! Highly recommend this place and we would love to come back for a longer stay one day!
