Description
Onsen Hotel Complex
Hotel Urashima is a central feature of Katsuura Onsen sitting prominently on the east side of Katsuura Bay on a rugged peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. This hotel complex is composed of four separate buildings (Honkan, Nisshokan, Nagisakan, & Sanjokan) connected by a network of tunnels, elevators and escalators. Guestrooms, especially in the Sanjokan, offer excellent panoramic views. Numerous souvenir shops, karaoke bars, and game centers line the halls. To help guests explore this labyrinth, color coded lines are set into the floor.
Hot spring baths are scattered throughout the facility including the famous Bokido, a natural hot spring bath in a cave overlooking the ocean.
The buffet meals are extensive and sometimes include entertaining Tuna filleting shows.
Even with the large size of this hotel, there is always a quiet spot or hot spring bath to escape to for people that what to relax.

Very good location to wind down after the KK. The room overlocked the bay and the cave onsen was unique. The buffet food was good with many choices. It was nice to have a Lawsens in the lobby.

Unique stay with a very nice view!
To get to the hotel, we took a short "turtle" ferry from Katsuura. The hotel was divided into different sections, quite literally built into the mountain and rocks and known for its cave onsens. The vibe inside was reminiscent of old Vegas, 90s, and we rode the longest escalator up to the section of the hotel called Sanjokan where our room was located. Our specific room had a wonderful view of the Katsuura bay. Food was a combination of main course and buffet. The walk to the cave onsen was interesting, and it felt like we were exploring a mine. Overall, a very unique experience.

Everyone, if they get the chance, should stay for one night a Hotel Urashima. There cannot be on this planet another hotel with such a wide-ranging combination of interior and exterior design decisions. The rooms and the peninsula top gardens are world class, the service of the staff fantastic, but some of the corridors and strange abandoned pool ruins, and low end furniture in the sprawling buffet area come from a completely different mindset. And then there's the cave onsens! - you either think they are beyond fabulous or you think "oh boy, what on earth is this?". I loved the cave onsen. Three different pools, slightly different temperatures, you can hear (but not see) the waves crashing down below the cavemouth. I was there for at least an hour soaking in the experience. Because the food in Japan for our entire three weeks was very good, and because we'd eaten so well at the four other locations, the food here at Urashima was perhaps the worst we ate for our entire 3 weeks. So it's 3 stars on a distinctly Japanese scale. It's okay. But's is a mass buffet and I'm sure there's only so well you can cook mass buffet food.

Kii Tanabe spa
This is a pretty interesting location in a beautiful town of Kii Katsuura and spans the entire island it is on within a protected bay. The breakfast on the second day were foods that had been served the night before with some of the items (e.g., lettuce, oranges) browning and wilting or souring, which could be problematic for someone who is not a meat eater, where the more fresh food for breakfast that was being cooked involved meat and eggs. Great land and sea shuttle service. Otherwise, the staff was great and the location was marvelous.

Memorable and Restorative
Hotel Urashima was the perfect place to rest and recharge after completing our journey on the Kumano Kodo. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by kind, helpful, and pleasant service staff who made our stay feel special. The rooms were beautiful, with views overlooking the water that were both peaceful and breathtaking. Arriving by the turtle ferry was such a cute and fun touch—it added a bit of charm to the whole experience. During ferry off-hours, the hotel’s van to and from town was available and efficient, which we really appreciated. On our final day, the hotel even helped us book a taxi to the train station, making our departure smooth and stress-free. The food at the buffet was absolutely fantastic—so delicious and plentiful! Our group loved the wide variety of options and especially enjoyed the coffee and desserts. The robes provided for lounging around the hotel were a nice touch, adding to the relaxing atmosphere. One of the highlights for me was the cave onsen—such a unique and calming experience. The baths were beautiful and rejuvenating, a true treat after days of hiking. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add more signage in English, especially to help guests find their way to the cave onsen and navigate the different areas of this large hotel. Additionally, a walking map with suggestions for things to do in town would be a great addition—we loved walking around and exploring the area! Overall, Hotel Urashima was a memorable and restorative stay with stunning views, incredible food, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommended!

A great place to relax after a long walk.
We spent 3 nights here and loved it. For us it was a strange sight seeing all these people dressed in the same robes walking around the hotel carrying the same baskets going from Onsen to room to dinner to shops etc. We embraced it and loved it. The onsens and variety were amazing our favourites were the cave ocean one's. Relaxing watching the waves break on the edge of the bath. The food was great and staff friendly and helpful. Close to the fish market if that's your thing to watch the early morning tuna auctions. Lawsons store in the hotel for all your needs. Plenty of boat and bus departures to explore. Highly recommended place to unwind after the walk for those onsen lovers.

Very large hotel with many people but the experience is absolutely worth it
The meals a buffet style if booked in advance. But there are also restaurants within the hotel, if you don't enjoy buffets. The contents of the buffets are delicious, from the sushi to the pizza. You are spoiled for choice (if you like that). Just be aware that this is a very large hotel and that means that there are many people at the buffet. The cave baths are truly an experience. To see and hear the ocean crashing against the island while sitting in a hot bath is actually amazing. I think all rooms must have great view. We had a room overlooking the bay and it was stunning. In this part of the hotel, all rooms were on the same side of the corridor, so they all must have overlooked the bay. Other parts of the hotel have rooms overlooking the ocean, I think.

Great Finale
This was difficult to access, as a ferry is required, and no one at Kumano Travel informed us of this. The ferry schedule is limited throughout the day, and does not always move people to the front of the hotel. There is also the option to take a taxi for an extra cost, that we were not told about getting off at the bus stop which takes you to the back of the hotel. The onsen was incredible, and the view from our suite lovely. We would have loved to spend more than one night here.

Beautiful Grotto-Onsen Baths
The hotel is beautifully situated on its own peninsula and is only accessible by boat. You can enjoy the sunrise and sunset not only from your room but also from the onsen baths. The nature and the really beautiful onsen baths in a grotto keep you from looking to close at the aging building. The food in a buffet meets the high standards of Japan.

Big resort, some vegan food options
This was not our first choice accommodation - we wanted a small guesthouse with vegan meals, but got this massive resort with a buffet with labelled allergens. It was not really the experience we were looking for, but it was perfectly fine. It's inconvenient to reach, as you have to take a ferry out there. It's such a huge resort, it's a bit of a maze, but staff explained everything well at check in. The room was nice and quite large, and had a lovely view of the sea. According to the allergen labelling, vegan options at the evening buffet included rice, boiled vegetables, pickled vegetables, vegetable soup, fries, sweet potato and pumpkin tempura, and burdock chips. At breakfast there was rice and fruit. All the cereal was Kellogg's, which I think is never vegan. At check out, we got charged some kind of onsen tax.

Oceanfront onsen
Hotel Urashima is a very large resort type hotel - quite different from the minshuku that we got used to on the trek. It was a nice change of pace for the end of the trek. The location is a bit inconvenient because you need to either take the ferry or a hotel shuttle to reach the hotel. The directions for the ferry and shuttle are not very clear on the website, so we initially had some problems trying to get there on the rainy afternoon that we arrived. Once there, the hotel is a bit overwhelming (it's large) until you get the lay of the land. And the outdoor cave onsen are spectacular! The food was not great - it's served buffet style and was adequate. If you want really good fish, just head back to Kii Katsuura town and eat the fresh tuna, served in multiple locations throughout the town.

This experience was super fun. Here, English was pretty minimal. But we were able to get by. The resort is huge. Getting there by ferry was fast. We were pretty lucky in timing everything because it seems like they're not always operational. They do however have an alternate shuttle that brings guests in and out on a private road, as there is no other ways to get to the hotel. The onsens were really cool. The cave ones are always packed while the indoor ones were usually pretty empty. Exploring was really fun too, as you can participate in a stamp rally to visit all available onsens location across the hotels for a small gift (bath salts). The buffet style dinner and breakfast was delicious and high quality. I enjoyed everything. Make some time to visit the outlook area up on the top of the island. You can an incredible view of the ocean as well as the port town Katsuura.

The hotel is actually located on an island across the water, accessible by ferry or a hotel shuttle bus. The cave onsen is a must. Great location and wonderful mid-century design still intact - I hope it stays that way. Certainly does live up to its reputation for being a location worthy of 1960s James Bond film. A great place for family trip
Very big establishment. Food is so so. However, the Onsen in the caves were phenomenal. Sitting in the hot spring by the side of the ocean, listening to the sound of the waves is a once in a lifetime experience. I actually stood by the fence since it was after 9 pm and was pretty much protected by the darkness. I could see the waves and silhouette of the steep mountain wall running into the ocean. The next morning I went to park on the top of the hill. It was raining but it shows a very different feeling like putting a thin sheer in front of this picturesque scenery.

L’atmosphère de cet hôtel est charmante : comme si le temps s’était arrêté dans les années 1970 ! À faire !

Cave onsens were the highlight
Worth visiting for the cave onsens, a unique experience you can't get anywhere else. We had an issue in our room where there was a power outage and all the lights turned ON at 4 AM and there was no way to turn them off. Not sure if this is standard or if it only happened to our room, but it was a strange experience (why would you turn all the lights on if there is a power outage?) as we couldn't figure out what was happening and the staff spoke limited English.

The hotel while seemingly dated has been maintained well. We had a fantastic room with an ocean view. Staff were very friednly and checking was very easy. The hotel itself is very large with lots of areas to explore. The meals were a pleasant surprise with high quality buffet for dinner and breakfast. The onsens were fantastic set in natural caves.

Older facility but amazing location, right on the Pacific Ocean! Gorgeous view (rain or shine) from our room & dining room. Parking lot was easy to find, shuttle easy to ride to & from the hotel. Very helpful, friendly staff - we overslept and got a reminder call to hurry because breakfast service was ending, thank you! Good variety of Japanese & European foods at buffets. Easy access to onsens.

Large resort
Our room was great: large, with both Japanese style sleeping area and western-style furniture for sitting around, and directly overlooking the ocean. The hotel itself is very large, divided between different buildings, and it felt a bit anonymous and lacking in character. We didn't go to the baths, so have no comment on them. The food was disappointing - all meals are served buffet-style, and it felt like a college canteen! But there was plenty of choice available, so you could pick precisely what you wanted and as much as you wanted. Not, however, an intimate dining experience! The hotel is also a bit out of town, though it is regularly serviced by both a bus and a ferry.

Opt for the Roykan
We thought we’d want a hotel experience after a day of hiking but this place was the only thing about our trip that felt inauthentic and old, not in the good way. The food was subpar and accommodations as well. The onsen in the cave was cool but also facilities looked worn and dated.

A very fun resort style hotel, accessible by ferry!
Hotel Urashima had one of the most beautiful onsens that we visited during our trip -- in a cave, facing the Pacific Ocean! We had a lot of fun in this lively hotel that includes an arcade, karaoke, and lots of activities to do. Our rooms were very peaceful and we really liked the tatami-mat style room with comfortable futons. We had a lot of fun in those hotel and found reception and service to be thoughtful and kind, and the location to be accessible and easy to get to (a short ~5 minute ferry ride that comes often).

A huge hotel of many parts
This is a huge hotel complex, with colour coded lines to help you navigate from one side to the other. We stayed in the Nisshokan building, enjoying wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean crashing into the shore, and a spectacular sunrise. The sound of the sea is a wonderful way to go to sleep. The rooms are large with traditional Japanese bedding. The meal area in this building was very very large. You are assigned certain dining hours. The buffet is reasonable. The Bokido (natural onsen in a cave) is an absolute highlight!

Nice location on the ocean with spacious rooms.
Rooms were large and filled with light with comfortable futons. However bath tub is child size and toilet is cramped with no room to turn. Spacious dressing room. Great views of the ocean. Restaurant buffet style with multiple vegetarian options. However restaurant is dated and needs improvement . Whole hotel complex looks like a communist era building however can walk around the multiple buildings. Great Onsen experience. Staff pleasant but being a huge hotel , you do not get the personalized attention of the smaller ryokans. Overall satisfied. Recommend the Shiatsu massage in the hotel. Well priced and excellent massage

It was totally taken over by a massive group tour from China. Only plastic plates to eat at a huge viking dining room. For the price, very low quality. It was gigantic and we spent more time walking between bath, dining, reception and to our rooms. This not their fault but with the bad weather the open air parts of the baths closed. Definitely not a place for individuals to go.

This is the best way to cap the end of Kumano Kodo. The accommodations were spacious with breathtaking view. Plus the buffet meals were the best (the tuna servings were great). Needs an Upgrade and better food
Urashima might have been a nice hotel 40 years ago, but it is old, run down, and not worth staying. The room was nice, with the best part the view of the Pacific Ocean. Dinner was terrible at best. The dining room is old and outdated, with the buffet just plain terrible. We didn't even waste time with breakfast, just left and found a bakery in town by the train station. Unless they update the hotel, I would not recommend this to anyone.

This was a bit more expensive than our other lodging choices, but we decided to stay here since it sounded like it had the potential to be a memorable place. It was, and we're glad we chose it. Great buffet, lots of great tasting food to choose from. A fun complex to explore, and the Onsens were memorable too - sitting in hot water looking out over the ocean can't be beat.

Could have been better
I got an impression from the quite nice homepage, that there would be at least some basic English-speaking staff and explanation of the facilities. None was found. I know a tiny bit Japanese, so I managed alright. The Japanese style room and the onsens were quite nice The other parts of the hotel smelled slightly of smoke and were not quite as nice as I expected. The buffet were odd... some part was very good quality and other parts were really substandard.

We spent 2 nights here after walking a section of the kumano kodo. The hotel is vast and quite old fashioned and a bit run down. However, it was spotlessly clean and the onsens are amazing. There was a huge buffet with amazing sashimi and sushi. Some of the "hot" food was cold the first night. I think we were better at selecting things the second night and the food seemed better.

Great experience
We loved our room and the accommodations. The cavern baths were extremely impressive. It was clearly a bit unusual for a family of three non-Japanese to stay at Urashima, but the staff handled this perfectly gracefully. The man who handled checkin for us made a point of dropping it at mealtimes to see we were having a good time, and was impressed with how much our daughter loves udon.

A relaxing resort experience!
Hotel Urashima was the perfect place to end our Kumano Kodo adventure. With robust dinner and breakfast buffets, breathtaking views (we stayed in Nisshokan), spacious rooms, and a variety of onsen to sample, the hotel makes you feel relaxed and comfortable and offers a true resort experience. Note that the clientele appear to primarily be Japanese resort-goers, not foreign tourists, so don't expect people to be speaking English (although this was not an issue for check-in, etc.). Highly recommend!

Massive hotel with lot sof everything
This was the biggest hotel I stayed in throughout my 6 weeks in Japan and the space was greatly appreciated. My room was large and it was nice to be able to open the windows and let in the sea air. I enjoyed travelling out to the hotel on the little turtle boat and the reception was warm and welcoming. The buffet dinner and breakfast was great, but it was the six onsens within the hotel complex (and the long walks between each of them) that I enjoyed the most, especially the cave onsen that looked out onto the sea.

This was my second time to this area and to that hotel, but the first time I actually stayed the night. It is quite a magical place - the food and the room were amazing, and the whole hotel is like another world. It has literally everything; karaoke bars, video games, massages, lounges, other restaurants. It is the best place to stay if you want a night of luxury after or before hiking the kumano koodo. It's also very close to Nachi no taki, Japan's tallest waterfall. The dinner and breakfast buffets were amazing. I will come back every time I visit Japan.

An incredible buffet and a unique experience!
Hotel Urashima is a unique experience, with incredible cave baths, and its location built into the mountainside on the ocean. Our room was beautiful, and the sashimi buffet was incredible. The experience was great, if a bit touristy. We were somewhat disappointed that we were told to leave the baths earlier than we had expected, and the female cleaning staff came into the male baths before closing and shouted at everyone to leave. Also, the sulpher smell of the hotsprings came into the dining room. Regardless, we had a great time and wished we had two days there instead one evening and one morning.

Like being in a Bond movie
This place is really trippy, it really is. We didn't actually know it's one of the most famous hotels in all Japan, or that it was on an island, or that it was gigantic, until we actually arrived at the pier. You need to catch a boat out to the island, it only takes 10 minutes or so although in the mornings if large tour groups are departing the hotel the queue can be quite big. Going out to the hotel you get the sense that you're in a Bond movie from the late 60s - it looks like you're going to one of the big hideouts. There's really 70s/80s vibe inside the hotel, with the staff in pale yellow jackets and little giftshops everywhere. The place is so big that they have coloured lines on the floor to direct you to the various zones. The size and the fact that they encourage everyone to wear their yukata inside the hotel means again it gives you the Bond movie vibe. It's great just for the experience! The staff are somewhat helpful but you get the impression there's quite a lot for them to do (not surprising considering it can hold half a bazillion guests) so it's not quite as personal service as you get in a ryokan or guesthouse of course. The rooms are huge and well-appointed. We had a Japanese style room and it was much bigger (much bigger!) than a typical Japanese hotel room. It had a separate dressing room and lovely ocean views that really helped us relax. Really nice. Also, the 70s/80s vibe doesn't penetrate as strongly into the rooms so you aren't tripping out while you're trying to relax. Dining is by buffet at set times. The dining hall is enormous but there aren't really big queues near the food. The food is fine, it's not outstanding but there's lots of it, especially the sushi, and it's quite varied. You can get pure Japanese through to Japanese/Chinese hybrid cuisine and some Western stuff. Nice enough. Same for breakfast - all the usual elements of Japanese or English breakfasts. Hotel Urashima is famous for the onsen and it has many of them around the island. We only tried one because we were dead tired, so we can't comment too much, but they seem to be large, clean and they provide plenty of products for bathing. We didn't go in the famous ocean-view cave onsen. Overall I would stay here again - I don't know if I could take more than a few nights before I got sick of the food, but it's an interesting, amusing and sometimes bizarre experience that is worth having.
