The most cost-effective hotel in the hot spring area
There is a quite good hotel in the hot spring area. It has 3 private hot springs and when we arrived there, there weren't many people and we didn't need to wait in line. However, there are just maybe two or three restaurants nearby. Currently, the hotel doesn't offer any dining services. Only a coupon for a restaurant outside is available, which is for steamed dishes.

The private hot spring baths are the best!
I had originally planned on hiking a few extra kilometers on this day because I arrived early in Yunomine Onsen, but after seeing my accommodation, particularly the private hot spring baths, I decided to rest and enjoy my stay early. It was amazing! I'd recommend this accommodation to anyone; and the hosts were fun to talk with.

Comfortable stay
Dorm rooms/bunks were a compact but comfortable size. Everything was nice and clean, and the outdoor onsen was a treat. We didn't really use the kitchen besides making coffee, but it seemed to be well-equipped. Check-in process was nice and easy. Good value for money.

Cozy place
The staff were so friendly and helpful. The bed was a bunk/capsule size. However I felt that the mattress was not super comfortable. Other than that it was a great stay. The common areas were lovely and cozy, and the onsen baths were plentiful and crazy hot!

Everything was perfect. The only problem we had was a misunderstanding with the lunch box (they gave one of ours to another customer) but I noticed that one was missing and we had been able to retrieve it before the other customer left the accomodation.

A large but well run hostel
As long as you are happy with hostel-style dorm accomodation, this place is fine. Having their own onsens (3, all private) is a big plus. Just be prepared: It is a *big* hostel - a lot of people in a small space - but well run.

Great hostel
First off: I think Japanese hostels aren’t like any other hostels around the world. We braced ourselves for a night of less comfort and cleanliness but got the exact opposite! We arrived after a long day of hiking (around 30 km from Chikatsuyu) at sunset a entered this magical village of Yunomine Onsen. When we entered the hostel, we’ve been immediately greeted by the staff and have been shown around. The rooms were clean, cozy and spacious. There are 3 separate Onsen in the hostel that you can use all night. The kitchen was clean and never crowded. The staff was very friendly and forthcoming. Thank you!

Fantastic, welcoming guesthouse in a wonderful location
We received the warmest welcome from a staff member and immediately knew we were in good hands at a well-run guesthouse. Our room upstairs was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet with a lovely view of the village from the large windows. The washrooms upstairs were modern, clean and plentiful. Unfortunately, the 3 onsens downstairs were not functioning and the shower water was lukewarm, but this was the only negative. There was a large, well-equipped communal kitchen and a large, attractive, Japanese style communal dining/sitting room. The guesthouse offered an extensive range of food and drinks payment for which operated on an honesty system. Rice porridge was available for free from 6am onwards for all guests. We received a 10% discount at a great cafe across the road with delicious food. We highly recommend taking the Tsuboyu (the hot springs bath that sits in the creek).

Fantastic hostel
This was my favourite place we stayed on the Kumano Kodo and one of my favourite places we stayed in Japan. The kitchen & bathrooms were good, the living space was really nice & everything was very clean and well looked after. We were only able to book dorm rooms due to availability, but the dorm rooms here are very nice. Your bed is in a sort of miniature room with a curtain so it feels nice & private. The best part about this hostel is it has 3 private onsen! Being able to take a long relaxed bath with your partner after a long day of walking was absolutely lovely & the outdoor onsen was particularly nice. I would recommend staying here to anyone.

practical, nothing fancy
The Guesthouse is correct, as long as you know in advance what to expect. In my case, it matched my expectations in almost everything. The bed is simple but reasonably comfortable, with the convenience of a power outlet for charging devices and a light for reading or organizing your things. The staff were polite, and the atmosphere with the other guests was respectful. Naturally, you can hear people getting up from their beds, so sleep isn’t very deep. Everything was clean and the facilities were acceptable. The highlight, without any doubt, was the outdoor onsen you can use privately. The downside was breakfast in the kitchen: just a pot of plain rice and a bowl of Japanese plums.

Convenient for a single night
Stayed here on my last day of hiking, enjoyed the natural hot spring bath. The dorm was small but cozy and the common sitting area was nice. The place accommodates a lot of guests so I did not directly interact with the hosts much but they were friendly. Would recommend this as one of the less expensive options in Yunomine Onsen.

Great stay in the private room
I stayed at the J-Hoppers in the private room, not a shared dorm, so my review is from that perspective. It was all wonderful. The kitchen was well equipped. You even receive a discount ticket for the restaurant in town. The amenities are very clean and they even have an onsen on site. It is also positioned on the hill, with nice views and on the path that takes you to the little temple where the Kumano Kodo trail and stamp house is located. It made for a perfect morning walk.

A modern business model in an Japanese style property.
It is a modern business concept in an old transitional Japanese house. Looks like it was run by a group of young owners. 4 of us booked in to the mix dormitory. The dorm is like a capsule hotel. Nice and cozy. But may not be an idea for claustrophobic. There are 3 bathrooms, 2 indoor and 1 outdoor with private onsen. In conclusion it is a nice place to stay in Yunomine.

Second Night
We went from Minshuku Omuraya and walked into Hongu. It was a great walk and Google led us down a back road that went through the trees and along the river. We visited several places in Hongu and then decided to hike to J-Hopper via the Kumano Kodo trail that went straight up a mountain!!! Incredible and soooooo many stairs but would do it again for the peace and quiet we found on this segment of trail. We dropped down into Yunomine Onsen and stayed at the J-Hopper! The onsen is a creek that runs through this cute little town what the hot water just flows into it. The J-Hopper was very welcoming and had several amenities including laundry and a kitchen for use since they don’t serve super or breakfast. They had private onsens that we used immediately to relaxed our sore muscles. Great place to rest in between traveling. Nice chill atmosphere and very helpful staff. Our lunch was delivered here this next morning and it was so good too!! All the food we had was delicious and the presentation is so nice.

a bit off the track, needed to catch a bus which wer at about 1 hr interval But the hot sprng was a bonus
I had to catch a bus from hosshinmon-oji as i was not sure i could make it the Kumano hongu although it was only 10 km away. In hindsight, i should have planne it better, but the experience of the hotspring there was great. I managed to boil two egges from the hot spring and enjoyed the private onsen. and the next morning i had to catch the same bus to sontinue my trek. A bit of an inconveneince.

Private onsen!!
Lots of fellow travelers/hikers ending their journey here at this well-equipped hostel. It can be a bit of a rush to hike from Chikatsuyu/Tsugizakura to Hongu, and then Yunomine Onsen here, but the private onsen in this hostel will heal your feet and soul. You don't have to use the public baths outside, because this hostel has 3 private onsen equipped with the same source! Breakfast is free-flow porridge in the morning, and lunch can be settled with the stores near the trailhead at Ukegawa.

A very popular guesthouse on Kumano Kodo
This lovely guest house gave me the feeling of a mixture of Japanese culture and Western culture, the onsens and the traditional tatami room are Japanese, while the operation and management feels very western, so it's a very interesting place to stay and explore. Highly highly recommend the Tsuyubo Onsen in Yunomine, it's just around the corner from the guesthouse, and that Onsen is indeed has healing power. 选择住在汤之峰的话,推荐这里,性价比很高!

J-Hoppers is a fantastic option to stay in Yunomine. The staff was very helpful and responsive while communicating with them prior to our arrival and in situ. We stayed at the shared bedrooms, in the "boxes" which was much more comfortable than expected. The onsen facilities are great, there are two onsens, one outdoor and one indoor, both beautiful. The common rooms are very nice and spacious. We have not taken the meal options, but you might want them if arriving late or very hungry. There are limited number of restaurants there.

Reception staff spoke good English. We pre-ordered the dinner bento, which was useful as Yunomine itself was very quiet at night. Exceptional value
Although dormitory style accommodation the bunks are pods with curtains which afford a decent level of privacy. There is a great communal kitchen, large tatami-mat communal area, in-house mineral baths (onsen), and good facilities for washing and drying clothes. The dinner was decent (a bento box with fish) but the 'breakfast provided' should not be considered breakfast (un-flavoured rice porridge only). Still, excellent value accommodation.

A Great Hostel
J-Hoppers is a basic guest house and a great value. The common areas are clean and well organized, the onsens are lovely (I suggest a midnight soak) and the dorm room was actually pretty easy to sleep in.

I booked this hotel because of the private onsen and it did not disappoint. After 25km of walking it was a beautiful experience. Everyone was very kind and it was in a great location in Yunomine.

The best price-value match! Onsen bath is an incredible bonus!
The reception was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The main area is a traditional tatami room, where quests have an opportunity to talk, play games, play guitar and drink tea. It’s been very atmospheric since the village is small but a lot of things to do (onsen’s alone could take a whole day!). The dorm rooms have separate capsules, so plenty of privacy for such a great price. The place sells snacks and instant food. Also, they cook free rice and porridge, which was so sweet of them. My absolute favorite things was the hostel’s onsen open bath. The temperature was perfect and the atmosphere couldn’t have been better!

Well-organized hostel with great service
We had booked with no meals because of my husband’s vegan diet but they reached out to us to arrange for a bento box for dinner due to the lack of restaurants and were able to accommodate the vegan diet. This was a lifesaver because we didn’t know what we were going to eat. The free rice and porridge was also great. The shared bathrooms were clean. We booked a private room and it was fairly spacious. The customer service was great. And the town of yunomine is special.

Very good, highly recommended
We were very happy with everything. - Good communication from start - Great location, nice hostel very authentic and calm. Nice shared space and onsen - We ordered the vegetarian dinner and bento for the next lunch, it was really good, big enough and super fresh. There is no really good food option around for all kind of food and even less for veg. Would come again!

This hostel may have been busy at times, but it is a suitable location to meet individuals from around the world. The staff were helpful. I was able to get an obento dinner my first night here and then the second night, the staff was able to make a reservation at a nearby izakaya.

Friendly, comfortable and cosy hostel
A friendly, welcoming hostel. It’s worth booking the bento-style supper by 9 am, as choice is limited in the village, although basic foodstuffs such as instant ramen are available. In the morning there is free rice porridge from 6 am for those who want it. While I prefer a private room, I’d stay here again.

A hostel with bath access
In terms of the rooms and so on, this hostel was high quality but more or less what you expect from a hostel. What was incredible for me was the ability to have a hot spring bath to myself, especially after the hardest day of the hike by far (I didn't realize there was no water refill station on this hike). Especially as a person with tattoos, I was worried about not being able to bathe, but this solved my problem and the town in the early morning with the steam rising up off the river is probably one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Everything in the guesthouse was clean and the staff very helpful. Even though the rooms were shared, we had no trouble in sleeping. And the most important thing, their private onsen is amazing! A must stay for the Onsens!
It's a hostel, and if fully packed it can be very busy. There's no good outdoor seating, which is the only major downside. The common is a very nice tatami mat area. There's ample amount of toilets even for a full house and a big kitchen area. You can order a bento or cook-being a hostel, there's often sharable spices/sauces/donated stuff. If you're taking a bus here, I'd buy groceries to cook. Even if hiking from Hongu, it's only a couple of kilometers(up and down a hill though). The best part by far are the baths, which use the same water as the Tsubo-yu and the other onsens down the hill. There's three, including one outdoor bath and they are open 24/7 and private. You can also get Onsen water from the sink tap in the hostel. The dorm can be a little noisy if anyone is snoring, and some of the dorm bunks are not all that private.

Great value for money
Clean and comfortable room and well provisioned communal kitchen/dining/lounge area. Appreciated the message offering the opportunity to order a Bento box for dinner however the Bento box itself was average. In hindsight, we would have been better off purchasing from the range of items available for sale onsite. (The vegan option did look nicer though)! The 3 private onsen are great and very welcome after a day of walking.

I loved my stay at J Hoppers! It's a 2 minute walk to the bus stop, and I was so warmly welcomed by staff. There's a common area on the tatami with a really well-equipped, clean kitchen. Comfortable stay at Kumano Kodo
The Guesthouse is located in a nice area - on the path of Kumano Kodo, so it was convenient to stay there. The rooms were nice, the baths were amazing and you could use them after the hike and before the hike in the morning. Unfortunately, the guesthouse did not propose any breakfast, so that was a pity, because the city does not have any shop and the small shop in the guesthouse did not offer proper food before the hike. Thank you!

Great stay in Yunomine Onsen!
The private onsens were amazing after the hike. Really relaxing, and surprisingly wasn't too busy. Rooms and bathrooms were clean. Overall, a great place to stay. The bento boxes we ordered for dinner were a little disappointing, but there was only one restaurant (and it was not open for dinner) so we had no other choice. You could buy packs of microwavable curry at reception, which would have arguably been tastier than the bento boxes.

Very well-kept with a communal kitchen and sitting room. There are three private onsens for all guests to use, which was a great way to finish my Kumano Kodo walk (and to start the day of post-walk travel back to Tokyo). I’d booked a supper as part of the package, which was managed through ordered-in bento - very convenient and a good thing to not have to sort myself, but definitely less unique than the in-house food offerings from the guesthouses I’d stayed at the previous two nights.

One of the best youth hostel I have ever stayed! A youth hostel with 5 star quality
It is an excellent youth hostel and probably one of my top youth hostel in the world. Super clean and well maintained. The 3 private onsens (hot spa) are definitely the highlights. It is youth hostel price with 5 star enjoyment. The whole atmosphere is just wonderful. I ordered Bento for dinner, which is very healthy yummy. The hostel sell instant noodles, quick microwave dishes and drinks as well. They also offer rice/porridge for free for dinner/breakfast. I will recommend to my friends for sure. What I like more about the hostel is their caring towards environmental protection. They have very well defined recycled bins, and also smart restroom design of lights, which automatically turn on and off only when in use/out. The staff speak English well and very considerate understanding. I can’t stop listing down how good this hostel is. It is simply the best place to have proper rest after days of walking!

Nice hostel
J-Hoppers is a nice hostel, very clean, and has a good private onsen. I also have to mention the lady at the reception, who speaks English very well and is very kind. We didn't request meals, and it would be a huge mistake, because there are no restaurants, convenience store or any other shop where we could eat in the area, but thankfully J-Hoppers sells cup noodles, drinks and snacks. We were also grateful because they let us eat in our room, specially considering the hostel was very busy and there were many people using the kitchen area. J-Hoppers asks for the guests to keep in silence after 10pm, but long before 6am it was already noisy, we could hear people talking and children running through the corridor. It was a good experience, but we definitely would enjoy it more if it wasn't during the pandemic and we could interact with the other guests.

A challenge for Yunomine (not specific to J-Hoppers, it's all of Yunomine) - there are no food options. J-Hoppers has a shelf of ramen and curries that you can buy. But bear in mind that there is not a breakfast/lunch/dinner option. If you're taking a bus here from Kumano Hongu Taisha, I would suggest looking through a grocery store/cafe by Kumano Hongo Taisha. The bathrooms/showers at J-Hoppers each have a private onsen, which is much appreciated after walking all day. There's a kitchen (in case you want to do food prep, or just use the kettle for your ramen). Check the bus schedule in the evening as there are very few buses to get you back to the trail (so if you miss the morning bus, you might have missed the only bus until the afternoon). Good wifi. Standard hostel like rooms - futons with curtains separating each cubicle/room.

great option
Having had some full on meals for the previous two nights of our trek we were so happy with the excellent standard of accommodation but with the great kitchen facilities to make ourselves some simple food - rice was available and you can cook your own eggs in the natural hot spring just down the road which was fun. Good base to enjoy some smaller walks to other onsens too.

The private onsens here are awesome! They have 3 private onsen (2 indoor and 1 outdoor) and you can use them with your partner or family. We also loved their kitchen facilities and foods they sold. It was easy to make a cozy meal without needing to leave the facility. Staff was very helpful and friendly as well. The bedding was comfortable and it was quiet at night. Would definitely stay again.

Very affordable option in an amazing location
Yunomine Onsen village is an amazing place to visit. Although there are no meals available for purchase at JHoppers, you can buy ingredients from the reception area and cook your own food in the communal kitchen. The room was a little smaller than other rooms we had stayed at on the Kumano Kodo route, but we were comfortable. If you are interested in socializing with other travelers, I highly recommend staying at JHoppers.

Great for the onsite onsens at the price, well situated
Great for the private onsite onsens at the price, well situated. However, I must say that even though I notified the staff at reception that we had deposited our luggage in the luggage room for collection by the shuttle service, they didn't take any action to follow up when the luggage shuttle service did not arrive to collect it, and it would simply have remained there without the fantastic assistance of Goro at our next accommodation at the Why Kumano hostel.

The Guesthouse was quiet busy. But after the whole day alone in the forest ist was a nice change. I met great people and the stuff was super friendly. One of the highlights was the outdoor bath. Great Affordable Place to Stay in a Charming Town
J-Hoppers was a great place to stay to help me keep my costs down on the trail. The staff were great helping out and the shared space was a nice spot to share hiking stories with fellow pilgrims. While there is a little restaurant in town, the J-Hoppers offers a pantry of items for sale so you can make a few different meals in their kitchen. Three different baths are available and there is a great foot onsen outside the front doors.

Great to stay here and be near the hot springs. The hostel has great private baths which you can use - we loved those and used them a lot. It's a shame they don't do meals as there really isn't a lot of other options to eat in the area. It was great - super clean, and the staff were so helpful - but I think it would be better to stay at another play in Yunomine where they provide dinner, breakfast and lunch.

Great place to stay in beautiful Yunomine
I loved my stay at J-hoppers. The place has a great vibe. Keith is a genuinely friendly and helpful host. The layout of the dorm and the guesthouse’s facilities is very well thought off and makes staying here very enjoyable and sociable whilst allowing for privacy as well. Yunomine is better known for its Onsen hotsprings than its shops and restaurants however the kitchen is very well equipped for cooking and got some beautiful ceramic bowls and plates to use :) J- hoppers sells some food and eggs and serves free rice from 6pm so if you bring some veggies from the nearest town you are totally sorted. The hotspring bathing facilities at the hostel are amazing as well.

Review for J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse
My partner and I spent two weeks traveling around Japan, and this was our last stop before returning to Tokyo to fly home. Despite only staying for two nights, we were really stunned by the beauty of this area. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, the facilities, and the friendliness of the J-Hoppers hostel. As a vegetarian in Japan, I really appreciated the full kitchen, and used it to cook a fairly elaborate meal both nights. The hostel provides rice in the evening, rice porridge in the morning, and the standard array of oils and seasonings. The indoor and outdoor onsens were a great bonus, and there was plenty of availability when we stayed there (early April). Both of the staff we met at the hostel were kind and informative, and the primarily English-speaking travelers we met were welcoming and gregarious. This was the only hostel we used on our trip, and we're really glad we had the chance to reflect with other travelers on our Japan experiences. I'm really glad we chose to stay at J-Hoppers, and I would highly recommend both the Kumano area and this specific hostel to anyone visiting Japan.

Great stay!
Very comfortable stay! Super helpful staff and good location. Important to note that there are stairs if you are coming with luggage, and really in such a small village, every accommodation is close to the bus so you can't go wronf. Only drawback was the thin walls (you could hear crying babies and groups in the next room talking loudly after 10pm) and the wait for the showers/onsen. A 30-minute time limit might help with this.

Truly amazing hostel with great value and wonderful location
I can't stress enough how great my stay here was! The staff was amazing and very helpful, the rooms were incredibly clean and comfy, there was a large selection of foods and drinks (plus free rice in the morning and evening, as well as free coffee and tea). Besides the great location, welcoming staff, and comfy beds, I think my favourite aspect had to be the 3 private onsen they had on the premises, one outdoor and two indoor, open 24 hours! Yunomine is delightful place to stay for onsen magic, but sometimes there's a long wait for Tsubo-yu or the public baths are quite full with tourists. The fact that J-Hoppers had private onsen was a huge, relaxing relief after a long hiking day. Thanks to Keith and his staff for being so wonderful!

Amazing hostel
This is an amazing place! There are three baths that can be used privately. And there is a traditional tatami room as common space + a well equipped kitchen with normal and onsen water for cooking. Staff was very friendly and helpful. For sleeping you have a capsule style bed with plenty of space and a socket to charge your devices. And all of that for the price of a hostel!

A Dreamy Place
I arrived at Yunomome Onsen smelly and dirty and I was so pleased to be greated by such a nice and hospitable staff. The accommodations were clea, comfortable, and convenient. The staff was able to give me tons of advice about the area and even provided free rice and coffee. They also have food for sale and a emmaculate kitchen for you to cook In. Thank you so much!

Very Well Kept & Modern Property
This is such a good place for the price. I stayed in a private room which had a decent size. The common areas were immaculately clean and really enjoyed the outdoor onsen! The manager is also very friendly, helpful with great English skills.
