Beautiful location
This place is quite stunning and having a private ferry to get there makes you feel pretty special.
It's not their fault, but if you happen to be vegan or vegetarian... Or an animal lover... It can be a little rough. There are holding pens for dolphins to be used for various things just below the balconies. I could hear them stressed and see them trapped. It was pretty hard to witness. Google a documentary about the area and dolphins if you want more information.
Their facilities are top notch. It was just sad...the dolphin part, to witness for me.
The other guests staying there are kind of snobby.
It's beautiful for sure!

Very very excellent hotel! Worth the splurge, breakfast and dinner were multiple course meals and delicious! The outdoor onsens were so good including one of them being in a cave. Indoor onsen also very large. Staff gave excellent service, my Japanese style room was huge, clean and had a great view overlooking the water of the island. There is a rooftop trail where you can have a foot bath also which was so relaxing. Great views all around and boat from the pier to the hotel was fast and also great service. Highly recommend choosing this hotel if you are staying in Katsuura. I would give over 5 stars if I could.

Exceptional place
From the reception to the hotel tour to the room and the onsen, this location is superb! Starting with the private boat shuttle to this island location. We had a large room with a small balcony overlooking the islands and sea, with a sitting room and plenty of space for the 3 of us. The meals were delightful and the people were helpful, friendly and professional. The 2 different happy hours (one with beer and ice cream, one with plum wine and sake) were very welcome. A top notch destination!

Such an incredible place
This hotel needs to be recognised as one of the top places to stay in Japan. The location and installations are stunning, and the service must be considered state-of-the-art. The food and Japanese bath are outstanding; it is the type of hotel that you need to stay at for more nights. Congratulations.

Best hotel in Kii-Katsuura
This is one of the best hotels I have ever visited. 20 minutely free ferries are available to the island from the Tourist jetty in town. From start to finish the staff were amazing. On check in they gave me a private tour of the whole facility. I stayed in a Japanese style room which was huge and had a beautiful view of the bay. Dinner and breakfast were a highlight with multiple authentic local-style dishes. There is a walk along the top of the island to see another view of the bay with a footbath along the way. The top highlight of the stay was ther outdoor onsens, they are absolutely spectacular with amazing views and baths of differing temperatures. The staff speak English and Japanese. I will definitely be back.

The best stay of our lives
We knew we were going to have a fabulous experience at Nakanoshima, but we didn't know it would be literal heaven on earth. I'd come back to Japan just to stay here. The staff and service is remarkable. The location is stunning. There are two lounges where they have different cocktail hours, all included. The onsen is huge and gorgeous. I loved the rooftop walk and the foot bath. My partner rented fishing equipment and fished off the front of the building. He caught one fish that was big enough, they offered to cook it for us for dinner that night! And the meals... wow. Just wow. Better than the michelin star places we've tried, by a long shot. Treat yourself! You will feel so pampered and in heaven.

Fantastic Ryokan
We had the best time at Nakanoshima Ryokan- the food, rooms, service and hotel were absolutely stunning. This is the highlight of our highlights itinerary. The cost is naturally much higher- but it was worth every dollar. Highly recommend trying the outdoor rotemburo facing the ocean. Check in earlier to enjoy the hilltop onsen foot bath experience and explore all the nooks and crannies of this hotel.

Luxurious but expensive
The accomodation was easily the best one we had on our stay in the area, with pretty much everything perfect: meals, room, the onsen directly near the ocean... The service personal was great and the views from the Lookout spot on top of the island as well as from our rooms and the outdoor onsen were magnificent.
There are also a lot of free ammenities like drinks and snacks.
The food was delicious and presented beautifully. It still felt traditionally Japanese while also being a little bit more familiar for European visitors than at other Ryokan.
The hotel is kind of expensive, but quite worth it, if you can afford it.

Onsen island hotel
This was an amazing onsen hotel on an island with its own ferry service. The island overlooks the beautiful cove of Katsuura which has natural vegetation and bird life as well as being a fishing port for tuna. Our room and the dining room looked straight onto the water. There is a large onsen with an outdoor pool next to the ocean. Dinner and breakfast were superb. The dinner featured fresh local seafood prepared in Japanese style. Highly recommended.

Hotel California
The food and rooms are great, but the hotel COMPLETELY fails on customer service and attitude.
There are two FATAL flaws:
1) Although the hotel now has fewer rooms since my previous stay, they drastically limit how many people can board their too small boat back to shore. You may miss one, two or even three crossings. There is no alternative and if you have an onward train to catch, that’s your problem, not theirs.
2) In addition to woefully limiting the capacity of the boat, the staff, when faced with many customers wanting to leave at check-out rush hour, completely ignore guests’ concerns and show total inflexibility to customer service, instead hiding behind, and pointing to, the absurdity of their rigid systems.
The solution was in their hands and they refused to countenance it.
It’s quite an expensive Ryokan and one really does expect a better system and faculties - and accommodating staff attitude for that level of charge.
It’s Like Hotel California - You can checkout, but not leave!

A unique spot for a hotel
For sure, this hotel is on the expensive side, but we have no regrets!
The were very welcoming, and discovering the hotel feels almost like visiting the secret base of the rich James Bond vilain!
Our room was a simple yet spacious traditional Japanese room, with a great view of the bay.
All the onsens we tried were amazing, especially the outdoor ones with the view of the bay.
The food was some of the best we had on our trip, the kaiseki dinner especially was delicious.
You can exit the hotel at it's top floor and walk a bit on the top of the island all the way to a great view of the ocean, with a small hot foot-bath, we did this under the rain and the atmosphere was really great.
After dinner they had three different types of plume wine you could taste for free in one of the lobbies, all three were very high quality.
There was one downside to our stay here, and the hotel is not really to blame for this. Even though I said the view from our room was great, it was a bit spoiled when we realized that what we initially though were floating fishing platforms, turned out to be holding pens for some dolphins. Katsuura has a shady reputation when it comes to dolphin hunting, it is our firm belief that all hunting should be halted, and that dolphins shouldn't be held in captivity even for zoos and other attractions.

Amazing private island hotel... once in a lifetime
We won't ever stay at such a cool place in our lives! You take a 5 minute ferry to this private island with a gorgeous, renovated hotel. Big - like 100 rooms? You're greeted with tea and a financier by the well heeled staff, they take your bags in for you, check out your gorgeous sea view tatami room, and then you head to the stunning bath options - outdoor and indoor overlooking the sea with beautiful changing room spaces. The meals are stunning - like 10 courses each.. wow. Worth it. Our only concern was what looked like a dolphin enclosure outside the room. Not sure what that was for... swimming with the dolphins? We ask that Kumano-Bettei Nakanoshima close that operation down. Otherwise the hotel is beautiful.

This hotel was where I stayed on my last night after four days of hiking the Kumano Kodo and it did not disappoint. I read some reviews comparing the Nakanoshima to a James Bond villain's lair, and it sort of had that vibe, but I loved it. I loved the long, weird tunnels and the massive starkness of it. The outdoor onsens were wonderful and the indoor pools were nice and hot. The meals were great and I loved the Yukata. I was very tempted to take it with me, but decided I didn't need the bad karma. On Sunday morning after my soak I went to the lobby and listened to John Coltrane on the turntable and enjoyed a cup of coffee. A really nice way to end my Kumano Kodo experience. I don't know if I would have opted to stay at a 50000 yen/night resort otherwise, but since I saved so much money booking my own adventure through Kumano Travel, it didn't seem all that extravagant.

Pricey, but the onsen and rooms are gorgeous
The boat arrival is fun, the rooms are excellent, and the onsen was easily the best of our time in Japan. It was also the most expensive part of our Kumano Kodo trek, and possibly a bit overpriced. However, we stayed mere days before the entire hotel closed for a six-month renovation. I can't wait to see what they do with the place, as the island location really is stunning.

We were a little disappointed that there are no possibility to be outdoors. Only in Onsen are you outside. The pool was closed, you couldnt swim in the ocean and you couldnt even sit outside in sun or shade to enjoy a beverage. All the things I would expect when booking and Island hotel.

Super outdoor baths,
We enjoyed our large and comfortable room. It had beautiful views back to the township, the wharves , and the mountains. Watching the edge of a typhoon pass by was an exhilarating experience. The staff were all friendly and very kind to us.The first dinner was not as interesting or as large as our second dinner - which was a lovely tasty mixture of Japanese and Western food.
As noted by others some of the corridor areas are very worn - but as due to close soon for refurbishment - was not as widespread as expected.
Highlight is the truly beautiful outdoor baths, the photos do not exaggerate how lovely these are.
Also lovely foot bath at the top of the hill above the hotel.
Highly recommend.

An excellent hotel with very friendly staff
An excellent hotel with very friendly staff who are always happy to help. The hotel was very clean and our room was very comfortable and had a lovely view onto Kii-Katsura. The meals were beautifully presented and staff explained very well what each dish contained. We liked the Onsen, but found the water inside a little too hot, so spent most of our time in the outdoors section. The ferry taking one to the Hotel was well organised and very regular. We had expected the hotel to face out to the ocean, and not to be so close to the mainland, which is why we only rated it 4.

Lovely room. Terrible smell.
This is a rather unique hotel, placed around a peninsula on an island. We had a room in Building 1, which is the one closest to reception. The room itself was lovely with lots of space. However there was an awful smell of food in the room, which neither opening the windows nor putting the aircon on could get rid of. We deduced that it was in the bedding or tatami mats. It made for a smelly night.
There were also mosquitos about but no screens in the windows. This meant that the doors had to be closed during the night. The aircon fan was angled to blow down, right on our heads, which we were not happy with for a night. Thus it was not a particularly good experience. We were also above the ferry jetty, which started its engine at an early hour.
There was no instruction in English for both the aircon ( which had a different modus operandi to the norm) and for the hot water flask. We spent ages pushing buttons trying to get both to work satisfactorily but did not really do well enough. We also discovered that the drinks in the room fridge automatically charged to our account if we took one out to check what brand it was. We were given no warning of this, or maybe it was there for those that speak japanese. We therefore had no option but to purchase a very expensive beer from the room, rather than utilising the machine at the end of the corridor.

Large Ryokan!
It's a great location on an island with a regular shuttle boat. It's friendly and well run and everything is of good quality. I would stay there again, but be aware it is a very large establishment and the restaurant has more the feel of a canteen.

The hotel is in a lovely location but is in need of an update to modernise. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was inconsistent but overall good. Great location but biggest disappointment was that the swimming pool was not open. We booked the hotel for the large swimming pool. The weather was hot and humid -- perfect for swimming!

Large hotel in an island - very touristy
Guestroom: smelled like cigarettes. Asked for a non-smoking room but the hotel apparently doesn't separate smoking from non-smoking rooms. We were placed in the oldest wing of the hotel. The room was large but lots of wear and tear.
Facilities: there is a gift store selling souvenirs and local produce. In the morning, this turns into a pop-up wet market. Loved it.
Baths: large and extensive onsen. The outdoor onsen was good.
Meals: Good quality Kaiseki meal but not as elaborate as the other ryokans/minshukus we stayed at.
Location: on a secluded island. Must take ferry (free but scheduled) to get in and out. As we could not come and go as we please, we had to alter our timings according to the ferry schedule on top of the bus/train schedule. The ferry terminal is 10 minutes walk from the train/bus station. This should be taken into consideration if you are carrying heavy luggage.
Reception and service: Receptionists spoke English well - as expected from a hotel. No hiccups in the service - smooth check-in, check-out and all requests attended to appropriately.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Nakanohima. It was an unique experience to be picked up by boat to the hotel. Our view of Katsuura from our room was wonderful. The hotel needs to do some clean up. The hall carpets were very dirty and stained.

Spectacular island retreat and treat for the end of our pilgrimage
After a day of rain and steps, 14ks from Koguchi, we arrived at the grand shrine Nachi. A 20 min bus ride to town, a short walk to the ferry and a 2 minute ferry ride has you at Nakanoshima. A large hotel, with spacious rooms. Ours had views towards Kii Katsuura and the mountains. We were treated to kansei banquet in a private room where the food just kept coming! We utilised the private onsen with indoor and outdoor baths, as well as normal onsen with beautiful hot water from a local spring. We walked to the lookout and watched the boats coming in and out of the harbour. Most enjoyable.

My least favorite place along theKumano Kodo
The room was quite pretty and so were the baths but the service was quite impersonal and the food didn't have the freshness of the other meals I ate at the other places I stayed along the Kumano Kodo. In retrospect, I should have chosen a smaller, family owned place. But that was my fault as I got carried away by the scenery of this hotel. The hotel is a bit dated.

Warm service in a big hotel
Wonderful island location with excellent outdoor baths. Despite the large size of the hotel, the staff were warm and friendly, and even gave personal instructions on wearing the yukata properly. Only downside is the difficult access to the area from major cities. When it rained during the second day of our trip, there was little indoor options, so we had to brave a climb up the 400+ steps of Nachi Taisha in the rain.

Modern type hotel
Big hotel, interestingly located on an offshore island, so the view was unique and panoramic. Room was sizeable and comfortable, though the food and baths seemed more commercial and pedestrian. Reception was friendly, but had difficulty explaining some aspects due to English barrier. For such a big hotel, I was disappointed there was no wifi in the rooms.

Enjoyed the ferry trip across to Hotel Nakanoshima. We arrived earlier than scheduled check-in but they quickly organised our room. Great choice of baths - particularly loved the outside women's onsen. Beautifully presented and delicious dinner served in our room. The buffet breakfast offered an incredible choice ( Japanese and European). Particularly liked the walk accessed from the annexe and the footpath. A perfect place for relaxing after a several days of walking I'm Kumano Kodo.

Luxury experience!
Fabulous easy to access location, the ferry wharf for the hotel across the bay is a short walk from train station/bus stop. This is a luxury experience with beautiful tatami-style rooms, bay views, a choice of indoor or outdoor onsen, an amazing evening meal of many small courses, including sashimi, nabe, seafoods, a range of pickles and vegetables, dessert. Breakfast buffet is varied and includes Japanese and western choices. Staff are very polite and helpful. You can get the bus for Nachi Taisha at the railway station.

Hotel on an island close to the shore
The upgrade from ordinary meal and room to the deluxe accomodation is a big surprise to me and my big family. The sunset view from our room is once in a lifetime memory. The open sea onsen is stunning and relaxing. However, the indoor onsen and its washing tap is rusty and frafile, may be it is because of the sea erosion. Besides, the dinner in the banquet room for my family of 7 persons is private and filled with laughters during the meal. Thanks for the Kumano Travel for the best arrangement. Definitely I will recommend to my friends to approach Kumano Travel for their travel plans in Wakayama area.

We thought we would be the only guests in this rambling homage to James Bond's Dr No -- until the boatloads of Japanese guests arrived late in the afternoon, and the place came alive. Great room and view; very good hotel shops; highly recommended walk to the top of the island for the view and hot footbath!; larger baths not so attractive but a private bath (booked at reasonable cost) was brilliant -- watched the sunset from our private outside soak.

The highlight of my 3 weeks vacation.
My friend and I were so in love with this place. It was located at the beautiful location, so serene and calm your soul. The staff of all level made us felt like we were the most important guest. They were willing to help and always showed the hospitality. We were touched with the service here that we want to stay there again in the future. We stayed for 3 nights and it made us connected more to Japanese cultures.
The Japanese dinner came with the beautiful setting and were so delicious, each day we were served the different menu. The outdoor onsen was so charming with a great view of the sea. I felt so blessing to choose this place.

Nice staff, nice meal but old hotel
At first we were shocked by the look of the hotel. First you have a view of the port not the sea and the pool was dirty and closed. Then the carpet in the hotel was pink and mint with old paintings on the wall. But we must say that the hotel staff and the greetings we had made it up for this. Furthermore the dinner at night was astonishing. So we enjoyed the night but the price is a little too high for the hotel value.
