Convenient Village Lodging

Kumano Kodo Lodge "Kumoma" in Koguchi, once an old agricultural cooperative building, is now a village guesthouse and artists' retreat. It is conveniently located between the Ogumotori-goe trailhead and access to the Kogumotori-goe, in front of the Minakata shop, about 200 meters from the Koguchi bus stop. The name "Kumoma" literally translates as "between the clouds," referring to the two Kumotori passes. The owner opened the inn in 2019. He had traveled to the Kumano area for work many times and liked the area, and finally found and renovated the current location in Koguchi. He had worked various trades as part of a work-for-experience program which he now promotes and wanted to create an appealing stay for both artists and Kumano Kodo hikers in Koguchi at the urging of other locals. The interior is spacious and relaxed. Guests can have either a western-style or Japanese-style room, or rent-out the whole guesthouse. A light breakfast comes with the stay. Bento box meals for dinner and the following day's lunch can be ordered in advance upon request. There is also a small kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave oven, and hot pot. This inn is the closest to the Ogumotori-goe trailhead.

◆ IMPORTANT NOTICE ◆
Kumano Kodo Lodge "Kumoma" can only accept reservations 2 months or less in advance.

Location makes this stay

Overall, the welcoming staff and cozy bedroom made this place very comfortable. It was quite cold the night we were there but the staff were helpful in trying to bring up extra heaters. Arranging the bento dinner and lunch was great and totally met our needs.

Fantastic!!!

This was by far my favorite accommodation on the Kumano Kodo! Koichiro is the kindest person and made us feel so welcomed when we arrived at the Kumoma Lodge! The room had an incredible view of Koguchi and it was so cool to have the coffee shop below our room. Great vibes, drinks, and a real sense of community! Staying here was a highlight of the trip for me! The bento box was also so delicious too!!

Best place for us on the Kumano

These futons were so comfortable I emailed to ask what kind they were! They called the bath „the prison bath“ as it’s in the basement but the water was hot. There is a cafe on site and the host was lovely

Rustic but comfortable stay in an area with limited options

There are not many options in Koguchi, therefore I was happy even though it’s expensive. You can order bento meals extra, Breakfast is basic. There is a store across the street for snacks and drinks. Good common areas for listening to music.

Fantastic place to stay

The house was amazingly comfortable, we had everything we needed, could swim in the river and do our grocery shopping before the sun set. I loved this place and would love to come back. Thanks a lot!

An amazing old agricultural building that has its charm, including the oddities of the layout. Two guestrooms on the first floor with the Japanese guestroom offering wonderful views of the river. Highly recommend jumping in the river after a long days walk (accessed down the stairs, a short walk across the bridge from the accommodation). The shared facilities were very comfortable and the woman working there was very willing to chat about Japanese life and the history of the building. The bath is located two floors down from the guestrooms.

Spacious old rooms with a spectacular view

The rooms and building are a little tired, but they're extremely spacious and have an amazing view of the area. Bento boxes can be bought which were everyday fare but quite nice. There was a bit of a mixup and they didn't originally have a vegetarian bento, but our hosts were extremely apologetic and brought something quite quickly so no harm done :). Personally I think it's a little overpriced, especially compared to nearby areas like Kawayu onsen, but there aren't many options in Koguchi so I understand it.

Fabulous

This hostel was much more expensive than the others that we stayed in, but our room and the view from it was absolutely fabulous

Cool guesthouse

Guesthouse from a renovated building. I believe the staff changes quite often, but we were very lucky as they were very kind and interesting. We didn't expect such a good dinner too, although the breakfast was quite poor. The place itself is big, comfy and cozy, clean and very convenient for Kumano Kodo. There is a store in front with a bit of many things too. Highly recommend.

Too expensive

Location is great but the price is expensive with fair services. Washing machine and kitchen are not provided . The guestroom on 2/F, washroom is on the ground floor, you need to go down. Have to pay for dinner if you want. There are no restaurants around. To compare with others guest house/hotel (others provide fresh meal<cook for the guests immediately, and, their prices are even lower, not like kumoma, the meals are pre-prepared & instant food> ), not recommend. Sadly, others were all fulled.
