Original Minshuku

We were welcomed warmly in this seemingly very traditional guesthouse. Some corners of the building might be a bit dated, but the private Onsen in the basement is amazing, as well as the location right in the heart of Yunomine Onsen - it was very practical to be right opposite to the bus stop, as we had to take the bus early in the morning

Cute town-

Older minshuku but very clean and the host made an effort to accommodate my husband's desire for black tea. I wish we had arrived earlier to explore a little more of the town

Fantastic traditional house lodgement

We enjoyed a lot the lodgement in a traditional house, with a private bath and fantastic breakfast. The attention was really good, instead of the language. Highly recommended.

Visiting Yunomine Onsen and staying at Minshuku Atarashiya was realy fantastic experince! Yunomine Onsen is really a fairytale village, with Minshuku being located in the center of the village. The house owner was extremely welcoming and the food was great. We strongly recommend.

Great Location. Great food. Very relaxing.

This is a nice minshuku which is located almost across the street from the famous Tsubo-yu. We enjoyed walking around Yunomine Onsen after soaking in the hot springs downstairs and then getting into our yukatas which were provided in the room. My wife and I both were amazed at how you can cook food in a paper bowl. The lady speaks very little, if any, English but I was able to communicate with my conversational Japanese. Even if you can't speak Japanese, you should have no problem as she seems to have many non-Japanese-speaking guests.

Relaxation and Comfort at Minshuku Atarashiya with Private Onsen

My stay at Minshuku Atarashiya was a delightful experience. Located in the charming Yonomine Onsen area, this guesthouse offers simplicity and comfort. The highlight of this place is undoubtedly its private onsen, located right within the accommodation. After a long day of trekking, soaking in the soothing hot springs was incredibly rejuvenating. The room itself was modest, featuring tatami mats and a small table, with shared bathroom facilities. The meals served were delicious, and the host was accommodating and friendly. I highly recommend Minshuku Atarashiya for a relaxing and memorable stay in Yonomine Onsen.

A really nice little ryokan.

It was a really nice location in an onsen town but if we're being critical the amount of food served wasn't really adequate for hikers. The bath also left a little to be desired, it was rather bare and I cut my toe on a broken tile in the bath.

Well-located and comfortable stay ay Yunomine Onsen

Atarashiya was not our 1st choice and we were somewhat nervous about our stay because the reviews we read were mixed, and that the hostess didn't seem the most friendly. The stay turned out to be above our expectations - for a start, the hostess had a car park for us very close to the minshuku, and we had a room overlooking the main street, the river and the historic Tsuboyu public bath. Despite being next to the main road, the noise was from the river tumbling over the rocks. Nice big windows but not much privacy as there was another guest house across the road/ river facing us. The meals were served in the room and were good (not elaborate but wholesome and delicious). One big advantage was being able to gauge the queue at Tsuboyu - so we only had to wait for an hour; it's totally worth the experience! Afterwards there was a small eatery where we had beer and umeshu in our yukatas. The minshuku trips on its ratings because it needs to be better maintained - the onsite onsen needs to be cleaned better and the broken tiles in a corner replaced. The toilet and sinks are very functional - if they could be made more cheerful and modernized, it would help the place feel more friendly. The hostess is sweet enough and Yunomine Onsen is definitely worth an overnight stay.

Basic accommodation with so-so meals

We arrived at Minshuku Atarashiya after the 3 long days of trekking. The location of the Minshuku is super convenient and the bus stop is just 20 meters away from the house. The owner knows the bus timetable well. Unfortunately, we had a communcation problem with the owner that made us difficult to understand the house rules. The tone of the owner was a bit gruff, understand her frustration but this also made us quite uncomfortable to stay under the roof. I would recommend someone to prepare house rules in English for this accommodation. The bathroom was old with mould on the wall. We had supper and breakfast in the minshuku, food was typical family meals and not fancy. We were not allowed to hang our washed clothes inside the room. The owner was unwilling but finally let us hang those clothes in the laundary area outside the house, to avoid water dripping on Tatami, which is understandable. Wifi was okay and smooth. We didn't sleep very well because the soundproof was quite poor as it was very close to the river. We switched the air-conditioning on and the owner switched it off as she thought the weather was cool enough. Overall, it is still fine if you expect basic accommodation.

We spent 4 weeks in Japan with our 3 daughters, aged 14, 12 and 9. This was the only time we had the feeling that we were not welcome. Our host was sort of stressed and anxious about our presence in her home. She was all the time in our back to see what we were doing (or at least that is the feeling we had). In the evening we had to be back at 9 pm at the latest. In the morning she asked us to leave at 9.30 am. She woke us up at 7.30 am and made sure that we were gone as soon as possible. It was quite an unpleasant feeling. We could not communicate properly, as we don't speak japanese and she doesn't speak english, but I don't think this was the reason of this unusually uneasy relationship.

Pleasant stay in a peaceful place

Our host welcomed and showed us around, the Ryokan was very traditional, old but charming. The air con and the WiFi were fantastic. We were served amazing tea and biscuits upon arrival and in the morning. The bedding was lovely apart from the pillows who were a bit hard. Our host has been very helpful the next day when one of us had to get a cab to go to Hongu. Very nice overall

past its prime

good service in an inn way past its prime. great location directly on the kodo. the meals were ok, but really insufficient for the calories needed by through-walkers. maybe there could be a "hiker's meal" option? the bath was great temp and feel, but overall the building was a bit sad. there was no space to hang our wet clothes after a long hike in the rain, and when we placed some items on the small towel racks provided, we were scolded for dripping on the floor. I understand this business was designed to cater to onsen guests instead of hikers, but if it's going to be in this network of accommodations it should consider some updates.

Food are very poor.

Food are very poor, include both dinner and breakfast. Little food with rice and no special fish or something, even cannot full the stomach. It was not a good experience to treat myself after completed two long days trekking on Kumano Kodo. And definitely it was not worth money.

Noisy rooms

Located right next to the Akagi-goe trailhead in Yunomine Onsen, rooms overlook the main street. Unfortunately televisions in the rooms that can be heard through the wall. My room was next to the sinks and above the kitchen so from 5am it was really noisy. Average food and fewer dishes than elsewhere.

really authentic

Wonderfull authentic place with the best onsen (world heritage onsen) of japan right next door. The dinner and breakfast were some of the best meals during our 3 weeks in Japan. Thought in the end she really helped us our getting us our bento boxes earlier (8:10) than we had planned through the website (9:00) as the was very convenient for our hiking schedule.

unpleasant stay

The place is fine, but I would not recommend staying here if you are a foreign guest. We had a lot of trouble communicating with the owner (something we did not encounter anywhere else during our 3 week trip in Japan). Owner seemed to resent us staying there, did not have clear instructions prepared for what we should do, so we constantly felt as though we were offending her. She was very bossy and even went out into the town to find us in the morning and told us to start packing our things because check out was at 9 am (at the time it was 7:30 in the morning). We felt constantly hassled. I would recommend choosing another place if you can.

Ok

The location is great, in the Main Street. The owner was rather grumpy. We had spent the daywalking in the rain and most of our gear was wet but she did little to help us, instead gave us a hard time about where we were hanging our clothes. There was no option but in the room as she did not offer anywhere else. Other people who stayed elsewhere had the owners wash and dry their wet clothes for them. I would not recommend this place.

Dialogue With The Tsuboyu

It was my second time choosing to stay at Minshuku Atarashiya (July, 2016, and June, 2017) and I have stayed at other minshuku in Yunomine Onsen; but Atarahiya is the most lovely, in my opinion, because it is the nearest to the World Heritage Tsuboyu. The rooms look directly onto the little bath hut and you can hear the river during your meals and in your dreams. Atarashiya has time-worn patina going back many decades but is spotlessly clean. The bath at Minshuku Atarashiya is a mineral onsen bath (not just hot water). It is to be expected that mineral deposits accumulate on the bath; that is a sign of nature's beauty. The meals are delicious, naturally and locally sourced and generous. The host is kind and acts with simple and sincere modesty and heart. The host accepted my poor level of Japanese and willingly used English phrases. Minshuku Atarashiya has WABI SABI that harmonizes with the areas surrounding boulders, rivers, moss, forest. I am grateful to have stayed at Minshuku Atarashiya as the experience is a deep albeit transient part of my life. Exceptional. Unique.

Uncomfortable Stay

There was a bit of a language barrier, as we do not speak Japanese and our host's English was very limited. This led to some confusion on our part about what our host was expecting from us with regards to meals, the facilities, and the ""onsen tax"" she demanded from us in the evening after we took our baths. The room is a bit dingy (we found a GIANT spider on the wall) and the beds were not very comfortable. Overall, it was a fine stay, but I would not recommend this place to a friend.

Cannot fault this place

Located right opposite the World Heritage listed Onsen which we had booked into soon after arriving the hostess greeted us and was most pleasant and helpful. Great location, somewhat weird experience

Location is great, room overlooked Tsuboyu bath, but then honestly the town is so small that you can't have a bad location. As other reviewers have mentioned, the owner is a bit anxious and hovering. At one point she saw I had a bento that had an expiration of that day, and she took it away. Also went and rolled up my futon in the morning while I was showering. Very weird. No common room for meals and the portion sizes were really small for both dinner and breakfast.

Very Moving Experience

I loved this minshuku. Previous reviewers may have commented that the minshuku is old or even dirty, but it is not dirty at all and its age only shows the charm of authentic Japanese vintage patina. The view of the World Heritage Tsuboyu Onsen, at arm's reach from the room, is profoundly moving. Sleep with the window open and integrate the sound of the waterfall into your dreams to last a lifetime. The sashimi here was particularly fresh. The host is kind but anxious and nervous by nature so please be kind and try to speak basic words of Japanese politeness.

Yunomine Onsen is highly recommended to visit if you are traveling through the area. What a lovely oasis after a long day of walking! And what a treat to find myself in a room with a view over the tsuboyu and the sound of the river rushing by. I only spent one night at Minshuku Atarashiya, but it was a fantastic night. My room overlooked the river. Even though it was chilly, I slept with the window open to listen to the water all night. Good dinner

When we arrived we were soaking wet as it had begun raining some 4 hours previous on the trail. We were very keen on soaking in a hot onsen, but the owner did not let us leave until we had hand washed our wet clothes so that she could spin them in her washing machine (she has no dryer, but offered to put them in her washing machine on spin mode for us. However she wanted us to clean them first so that we didn`t get her washing machine dirty). We didn`t try the onsen in the ryokan as the water seemed a little brown and murky, but instead popped out and spent an enjoyable evening trying various onsens around the town, all within 5 minutes walking distance. Dinner was very nice traditional Japanese, as was breakfast.

Very relaxing stay in a fantastic location

Our room had a view directly overlooking the stream just above the incomparable Tsuboyu hot spring cabin, which was not only very convenient, but afforded us the sound of running water as we slept. The minshuku itself has two baths, oozing rustic charm, in one of which we happily cooked ourselves. The manager was very friendly, once we had established that we had no plans to contradict any of the strictly enforced, but entirely reasonable, rules of the establishment - and her food was delicious! Would gladly recommend.

This minshuku has seen better days. Although the location is good (opposite the Tsuboyu), their own bathroom is dark and not very attractive.

My only distress in a three week trip

I hesitate to write this review, but must. Feel free not to post it or to edit it so that it offers less information. The bottom line is that I would not return to Minshuku Atarashiya, would never recommend it, but hope that the woman who runs it can be helped to improve it and so become happier. In a 3 week visit to Japan, I had only one unpleasant experience -- in Yunomine at Minshuku Atarashiya. I arrived shortly after 4:00 pm. The owner did not introduce herself, but had me sit on the stairs to wait while she got her paperwork. Sitting on the steps was hard for me since I had injured my knee coming down from the Kumano Kodo. Her first act after that, was to identify the bus I would have to take so that I would be gone by 9:00 am. I feel badly about reporting this because the owner needs business, but the accommodations were cluttered, gave the sense of being dirty, and were in poor repair. The wall covering, a brown painted sparkly popcorn application in the room I was given was disintegrating, the curtains were frayed, either the tatami was worn or the floor below it was rough. The pillow had two covers--the first pillowcase was discolored. It was covered by a blue towel which smelled clean but covered only half the pillow. She refused to give me a cleaner pillowcase. The bedding in the closet was musty. The room was equipped with a plaid plasic topped table, and instead of the usual hot water and teapot, had a thermos with tea prepared earlier. I did not know it was tea until dinner. The facilities were basic but very run down. One sees the men's urinal on entering the toilet. The first stall had a squatting toilet. The second held an old western toilet with stickers on the seat and the water tank. The washstand had aged rubber covers on the spigots. The bath was unacceptable. It was missing about many sections of its tiles and had mold growing in places. I was given a stick to keep the door to the shower/bath secured. A window opened to a sunken window well with brick steps. I was uncomfortable with both the missing tiles and the black deposits in the bath. As a former epidemiologist, I thought they were likely Fusarium sp. I did not trust that the bath was clean enough to soak in safely. The room had been painted recently but the paint was already lifting away from dampness in the corners. My travels had overlapped those of a couple of other people who had highly recommended the medicinal baths across the road. When I asked the proprietor about them she indicated they were not good. Did I mention the insects? In my room, beside an unused table leaning against the wall in the alcove with it's folded legs aimed toward the sleeping area, was an extremely large (6 inches or more) thin cricket. At first, I was unsure whether it was cricket or a spider. When I turned the lights down it came out and approached me repeatedly. I urged it into the hallway but was concerned that it might alarm the other person staying there or be killed. So, I later caught it and took it outside. There were smaller bugs in the room which I photographed. Looking closely, the room and bathrooms were basically clean, just sadly run down. The food (except for the fish) was not good. Because of all this, I left without breakfast. Because she so clearly needs business, I would urge you to quietly provide her help in making her place more welcoming and sanitary: help this woman with bath repairs, painting, .... I may send her curtains for the room I stayed in. If the Ryokan across the street had been open and able to give me a room, I might have moved after dinner. I know, though, that this woman needed my business.

excellent, traditional guesthouse

Big spacious japanese style room. Our most authentic japanese accomodation experience. They have their own private onsen bath, very nice to relax in, albeit only for a few minutes as it's so so hot. We were served an evening meal in our room, lots and lots of small dishes - very good. Our hostess was kind and helpful and showed us off on our walking trail.

Not great, but better than expected

I have to say that we did not have much expectation about Minshuku Atarashiya, as reviews by previous customers have been mixed, and the more recent one are actually quite negative. But given the unavailability of the other places within our budget in the Yunomine Onsen area, we had to make do with it. As it turned out, our one-night stay there was better than we expected. Granted that Yunomine is not a big area, Atarashiya is centrally located. Everything is just one or two minutes’ walking distance away - the bus stop, the baths, and the entrances to the Akagi-goe and Dainichi-goe sections of Kumano Kudo ?the famous pilgrimage trail. The much hyped Tsuboyu that is said to be the only hot spring in the world that lets you bathe in a UNESCO World Heritage site is right in front, as well as the creek flowing with hot spring water. When you are sleeping on your futon at night, you can hear the flowing of the creek, along with the croaking of the frogs. Maybe that is why some visitors say the place is noisy, but we found it to be quite nice. Atarashiya is an old house, and the agedness shows in the facilities. For the most part, one can get by without a problem, except two things. One of the two bathrooms has no hot shower facilities, only a tap with slow running cold water, and the guesthouse has no Wi-Fi connection. In the former case, I had to wash myself with the hot spring water from the tub before hopping in for a soak. Regarding Wi-Fi, credits to the owner, upon our asking, she phoned a nearby guesthouse and then took us there so that we could use the wireless connection there. The guesthouse is clean and there are no bad smells or anything like that. The only odour we had to put up with was the cigarette stench from the chain smoker next door. Perhaps a non-smoking policy would suit us non-smokers better. The owner speaks virtually no English and does not smile profusely or proffer her service like so many other guesthouse owners and staff in the country, so she may give the impression of being a bit forlorn. But we found her to be actually helpful and caring. She tried her level best to serve us and attend to our needs, such as picking us up at the nearby Hongu Taisha bus station after we missed the last bus to Yunomine that afternoon, taking care of our food for dinner and breakfast and, despite the daunting task of communicating with us without a common language, trying to give us advice for hiking and transport. Minshuku Atarashiya definitely is not awesome, but it was the least expensive of all hotels and guesthouses we stayed at during the two-week trip. Considering that one gets what he pays for, it was a fair deal.

Cheaper than the rest but not very good

Among the several ryokans we stayed in Japan in our trip this was the worst. The general feeling of the place was old, the bath tub specially. Also the owner was not very nice, she was correct, but not friendly at all. In general we find lodging in the Kumano kodo quite expensive (comparing to the "Camino de Santiago"). In a pilgrimage route like this there should be more options, and cheaper accomodations for younger people and maybe less budget.

I really love mountain and hiking, so I ask to a friend for a nice place where I could spend few days, and he recommended me Kumano Kodo. I would like to hike the whole way, but I just had 2 days, so I walked between Takijiri and Yunomine Onsen, and it was awesome! The landscape is really nice, the way very good indicated and the maps very specifics, the very few people I crossed on the way very kind... I really look forward to go back and finish the whole way!

After 2 and a half days of hiking it was the perfect place to end the pilgrimage. The front door was a little hard to find as it's not clearly marked but once inside I received a friendly greeting by my hostess and shown to my room overlooking the world hertiage onsen. An absolutely lovely stay - highly recommended

Our stay at Minshuku Atarashiya was one of the highlights of our three weeks in Japan. It is located in the centre of the Yunomine Onsen village and right across the street from the world heritage Tsuboyu onsen - you can run across the street in your yukata! Everyone should try the famous onsen, but the guesthouse has its own - fed from the same volcanic hot springs. The decor in our room was a bit tired, but the room was very spacious with comfortable, clean bedding. The second night, we splurged for meals (dinner and breakfast), and these were excellent - highly recommended. Our host was absolutely lovely. She knows fewer than 10 English words, so it's vital to bring your dictionary. Because of the language/culture barrier, it's hard to really interact with her. For example, she was cooking part of our meal at the town's communal hot springs (wow, wonderful!) but seemed somewhat embarrassed that we'd caught her in the act. She had family (and we think children - who our daughter would loved to have played with) in the house, but she kept them completely out of sight. We would have welcomed a bit more interaction. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience, and we would highly recommend this guesthouse.

My experience was so bad here. Maybe because I arrived wet and full of dust (it was raining), the woman, who by the way doesn't speak a single word of English, was like mad at me all the time and the next day she almost kicks me out so soon. I recommend to pay more and avoid this.

We stayed at Atarashiya before we started our first day walk from Hongu to Koguchi. Overall we were very satisfied with the accomodation. The room was simple but we didn't need more than that. It was nice to have an onsen bath, although it was very hot! The food was great, we liked it a lot. For people who can't stand any noise during their sleep, bring earplugs because you can hear te stream from yunomine onsen quite loudly. The only difficult thing was that the lady of the house didn't speak any English. She was trying to ask us something abiut an umbrella, but even after several attemptions, we didn't know what she ment.

Very enjoyable stay

Very well located minshuku, with a beautiful view on the main street of Yunomine Onsen, right in front of the famous Tsuboyu onsen. The host was very welcoming and nice, the food was delicious. Yunomine Onsen is a very charming small onsen village, with only small and traditional houses, and a very good starting point for a nice walk along the Kumano Kodo toward Kumano Hongu Taisha.

Like staying at Grandma's house

I stayed here with my Japanese wife and her family during a visit to Yunomine Onsen. My wife said that it was like staying at her grandma's house. It is an older building in the center of the settlement. We could hear the stream all night, very relaxing. It is made according to older standards, so the rooms are smaller and the roof and doorways are lower. Watch your head in places if you are taller. We had a good time here, but for others it may depend on what you are looking for.

Mixed experience

In our opinion and to our experience so far this minshuku was overpriced. Allthough the location is interesting and there is an inhouse onsen, albeit with only one shower possibility, we were a bit put off by the moldy smell of the futons, and the room itself was rather small. The lady of the house was friendly and helpful and over the two nights we spent here the food was a mixed experience, fine dinners, breakfast was a bit to small for us.

Minshuku Atarashiya

During my Kumano Kodo adventure, I decided to spend a night in Yunomine onsen town, in Minshuku Atarashiya guesthouse. Upon arriving to the town with a bus I was immediately greeted by the wonderful hostess. She was waiting for me. The hostess is a very friendly lady and I enjoyed my stay there :) She was very helpful with Kumano Kodo maps and buses information. She was also kind enough to walk me to the Tsuboyu onsen registration window and seeing that I managed with the ticket and understood the rules of the onsen house. The guesthouse itself is a cute little Japanese house with all the basic needs, I didn`t feel the need for anything else, everything was there, even the good Japanese tea, served hot. When checking out the next day, the hostess prepared the famous onsen cooked eggs and gave them to me as a little present :) (Note, I did`t order any food with my guesthouse package). Overall a good experience!
