Old style charm
This lovely small guest house is run by a delightful older couple. They don’t speak much English, but it is easy to make yourself understood. The rooms are traditional Japanese style with tatami mats and the bathrooms are shared (though you can request a private period in the onsen). The meals were exceptional, beautifully prepared and presented. Recommended for those who want to experience a slice of real Japanese culture.

A cozy and perfect little hotel in the heart of Yunomine Onsen
The meals and the pijama offeres made me feel like a queen! Beautiful after a long day of walking. They have their own private onsen, and I had warm tea and a cookie waiting in my room to rest. The bus stop is right outside.

Everything was very nice. Owners are very kind, they have a small private onsen for us to relax after the long walk. We enjoyed so much our time here in this small onsen village, and thank you for the owners' kind hospitality.

Perfect stay with restorative onsen and delicious meals
We had a great stay here, right in the middle of Yunomine Onsen. The onsen bath was perfect for our tired feet and legs! Very sweet couple running this inn, the food they prepared was delicious and the portions were very generous. The yukata they provided meant we could relax in clean clothes after the onsen - and they were so kind to let us use the washing machine! Eye masks helped us sleep as the curtains are light and the traditional paper sliders don’t block light or sound.

We stayed in Minshuku Kuraya in February, the weather was quite cold and we came there hiking. We immediately felt very welcome and enjoyed the place very much. We were the only guests there. Both dinner and breakfast were great and we really enjoyed the Onsen.

Thank you for being my host
Minshuku Kuraya is my favourite on this trail. I walked to the house on a raining day, after walking from Hongu Taisha along a small and muddy trail. It was in the early afternoon. I had not yet touched my lunch box. Cold, hungry and wet with rain, I was not in my best shape. The couple at Kuraya welcomed me in without any question. The husband took my boots to dry, the lady led me up to a room with heaters on. Their kindness warmed my heart and body. I met so many nice Japanese people during my travel. Even so, this couple stands out. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness. You are the best! And of course. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious!

Friendly hosts but disappointing experience
The building is old and showing its age. The guest rooms are very small, and the walls are paper thin… literally! You can hear every sound from everyone else who is staying there. Having the shared bath right next to our room also meant that we heard all the toilet sounds through the night from the other guests. The food was also the worst that we experienced on the trail. The onsen was a very unique experience, and perhaps the saving grace of what was an otherwise disappointing experience in Yunomine.

Fantastic onsen minshuku
Probably our favourite stay on the Kumano Kodo. Situated right in the heart of the village with a private onsen that was small but all-natural. Food was the best we had- Japanese style little plates and a Japanese-style breakfast. The owners were even kind enough to lend us a Japanese phone charger after we had forgotten our adaptor at our previous accommodation. Really nothing more to say- this was the epitome of what this sort of accommodation should be.

A Rare Treat!
Located right on the picturesque main street of Yunomine (pronounced 'you nom min ay'...yes, I was one of the Aussies guilty of pronouncing it 'You know mean', until I learnt better!) Onsen, Minshuku Kuraya is a special place. The upstairs guest quarters are spacious, comfortable and well equiped. In the dining room guests sit at their own tables and we enjoyed the delicious food, all beautifully presented. The private onsen was fantastic! We had to keep pinching ourselves that it was real. Our hosts were very kind and made sure that we had everything we needed.

This place is right in the middle of Yunomine Onsen, near the public baths. They have their own small private bath at the front of the house, which was nice! I arrived early and was able to use it on my own. There was just one host working at this minshuku and she did everything! the building is nice and very traditional looking. The dinner was delicious, more traditional Japanese style.

Pleasant stay
This minshuku provides you with all your basic needs - a room, bath, food - but that's about it. The walls are pretty thin so I could hear foot steps and snoring through the night (someone was clearly very tired lol!). However, they were accommodating and provided me with an earlier breakfast at 6:30am as I needed to catch an early bus. The location is also great - very close to tsuboyu onsen and the main bus stop.

Clean, historic in with private Onsen & first-class meals
This inn was my first choice for this leg of the hike, and it did not disappoint. The meals were excellent, home-cooked meals. Thst even cooked my favorite fish, which is hard to find in November in Japan. A lot of preparation goes into these meals, you can tell. We had a private Onsen, private as in only for the guests at the inn. Some of my fellow hikers has to go to public baths or book a private Onsen, but after hiking all day, the last thing I wanted to do was to go around town looking for an Onsen. Great Japanese style room, the lady who ran the inn answered all my questions and was very kind. I would definitely return.

Host was very kind to let me use their washing machine and yard to hang my laundry. She was also very helpful in showing me how to work their washing machine, and we had a nice chat while we were at it. The dinner and breakfast had a comforting homemade feel to them and had a soothing effect. The room was in the traditional style with the tokonoma and shelf, which I really liked. The bath was a bit tepid but I was not sure if it was intended or if another guest adjusted the water flow.

A great place to end our Kumano Kodo trek. The room was simple and the mats were a bit thin, but we enjoyed our stay. A traditional hot spring town
The Minshuku is located just behind the Yunomine Onsen Bus Station, which is very easy to identify. It has a large public bath, but unfortunately due to time, I didn't feel it and just took shower for a while in the private Onsen pool. I like the smell of sulfur in the air, and it's comfortable to fall asleep with the sound of spring water at night. The blanket was a bit heavy. Breakfast and dinner are very abundant, with a family flavor. The host was very kind and immediately help me when I requested to transfer my luggage to the next accommodation.

A nice place to end your journey...
I spent my final night here, before setting off back to Osaka the next morning. Minshuku Kuraya was probably the most traditional inn I stayed in during my few days. Excellent location, and easy to find once you get into town. The bus stop is also very close. The room was comfortable with the standard amenities. The futon bed was comfortable and warm- the weather was a little chilly when I was there. The on-site Onsen was great- the water was nice and hot, perfect for aching muscles! It is available 24hrs a day, which is convenient... The meals in the evening and morning were delicious, being standard traditional Japanese fare. It can be a bit daunting to eat sometimes, but you should open your mind to the wonderful Japanese cuisine and culture. I recommend staying at Minshuku Kuraya for a tradional Japanese experience... Thank you for having me here...

Comfortable stay in Yunomine but lacking a warm feeling
Minshuku Kuraya was a nice guesthouse in Yunomine Onsen- the location was perfect, the outside onsen was nice and the facilities (room, bathroom) were spotless. The meals were fine, but very traditional Japanese and not as nice as those we ate at other guesthouses along the walk. Although the host was polite, she did not give off an air of friendliness. She was helpful when our plans had to change due to the typhoon, speaking to kumano travel by phone and helping with our arrangements, however it seemed that this was not done out of genuine kindness but rather because Kumano travel had asked her to help us. If you are looking for a clean, quiet place to stay, then this guesthouse would serve your needs, but don't expect a warm welcome.

Great onsen and delicious food
Our experience at minshuku Kuraya was very good. The onsen experience was delightful especially after a long day walking in the mountains! The guesthouse provides all the amenities (towels, shampoo, body soap, washing machine). We tried delicious japanese food prepared by our hosts. Our staying here was the perfect ending for our Kumano Kodo experience.

Great place!
We really loved Yunomine and this accommodation! The location of the accommodation is great, right next to the bus stop and close to restaurants a shop and the trail to Hongu. The room is very nice and clean and the onsen is great to relax in after a long hiking day. We would definitely recommend visiting Yunomine and staying at Minshuku Kuraya!

Great traditional stay in a beautiful onsen area
Best onsen area in a cute little town with nearly all wooden traditional houses. This Minshuku is very traditional with super sweet hosts that accommodated our early schedule and made sure we knew the bus times. Shared bathroom between all 4 guestrooms has nice sink area and 2 toilets. Everything is very clean, simple, food is great, and the hot springs are a lot of fun. We cooked some eggs in them and then also enjoyed the private onsens the minshuku provided. Only slightly hard thing was the showers were only located in the private onsen areas and were a bit awkward to use since you have to make sure you don't let your soap get into the onsen bath water.

Great location, delicious food and high quality onsen water
The location is perfect, in the middle of Yunomine Onsen! Everithing was great and the Hosts were really great and flexible for allowing us to leave our luggage and pick up the bento boxes, even thou check in only later in the day! We are really thankfull for that! Only one little difficulty were the showers in the onsen - it was difficult to adjust the temperature of the water and only one person at a time can take a shower. But the onsen itself was great!

Very nice traditional guesthouse
Very nice room in a traditional old house with the own hotspring bath for free directly in that beautiful village. I had a small communication problem as the owner don t speak good english and I could not let my bag for the time of a walk because they are closing for cleaning during the day but finally I could find lockers as almost always in Japan so it was not a big problem. Still they are very friendly.

A truly authentic experience
Location is right in the middle of town, with great views from the rooms. The hosts don't speak English, but they were so friendly and attentive. It was great to have a private onsen for the minshuku guests (it was so hot the first day!). Definitely opt for the meals for an amazing authentic experience. Dinner was stunning and delicious, with about 15 different items. Breakfast is about as far away from an American one as could be. But for those trying to immerse themselves in Japanese culture, give it a go. The only small con was the tataki mats. Some of the least comfortable we slept on along the Kumano Kodo, but still not bad. Can't recommend this place enough.

Fantastic experience and the best possible end of our pilgrimmage
I will never forget this wonderful stay. Very nice Japanese style home just by the bus stop, with its own private Onsen! The home cooked food was absolutely amazing! Definitely my best meal in all of Japan, and possibly one of the best globally too. Our host were kind but not very interested in communicating with us, they clearly preferred to talk to the Japanese guests and we did feel very lost regarding how to eat and behave, although we did feel welcomed and the environment was friendly. This was fantastic and I wish all pilgrims a similar end to their stay.

Relaxing stay in Yonomine
We had a very good stay at Minshuku Kuraya. Our room was upstairs on the corner and had very pleasant views of Yonomine. The room was a very nicely finished Japanese style room with Tokonoma and it was really comfortable and very beautiful. The bath, down on the river was very relaxing. The best thing about this listing, however, was the hosts who were truly wonderful! We are very grateful for help with drying our clothes and for showing us some new style tataming mats. Lovely owners
We hadn't booked any meals and that evening discovered that the local restaurant was closed. We went to buy eggs to cook in the onsen water but that had shut as well so the owner very kindly booked them for us. The bathroom is communal. The onsen is clean and luxurious but the shower is also in there. It is common for this area to have the shower in with the onsen. Ensure you don't miss the last bus to Yunomine onsen from Hongu if you're walking (we had to hitchhike) and stock up at the supermarket in Hongu if you don't book meals as the choice in Yunomine onsen store is virtually nothing.

This was the last Minshuku we stayed at during the Kumano Kodo and it was lovely. It is right next to the Yunomine Onsen bus stop which has semi frequent buses to/ from kumano hongu taisha- the owners also advised us on bus times. Outstanding food, wonderful place
Fantastic place to stop following a 22 km hike. The room/bathroom were excellent, the hotel is very centrally located, but not noisy. The food was exceptionally tasty and a wide range of things we had not tried before. All seven of us immediately put on yukatas (japanese dressing gowns) and didn't change out until we left. The only criticism is the onsen was a little small and lacked much decoration, but everything else about this hostel was exceptional!

The host was very nice and helped us organise luggage transfer via Ta-Q-Bin. The slight drawback of the minshuku was the location of the bath - it was housed in a separate building and the connecting path was exposed. This could be a challenge when it's raining and chilly.

Really enjoyed staying in this relatively small minshuku in Yunomine Onsen. Very friendly, food was lovely. Wonderful experience!
We chose the Kumano area to do a short trail and our first onsen experience. Also this was our first experience in a minshuku. We were very surprised about the level of service since the moment of our reservation. They were prompt and helpful and with attention to detail. Both my husband and I do not eat meat or shellfish, and my son loves all kinds of food. They arrange for us to have our meals accordingly. Upon our arrival our host was friendly and helpful. The place was easy to find in the middle of Yunomine and had its own onsen. It was not with a great view or elegant, but we really felt we were in the middle of the Kumano region experiencing the waters of the river in a very traditional way. We highly recommend eating where you stay. For me it was the best meal I have had in Japan. We are not traveling luxuriously but in a midrange budget and the meal was superb, delicate, home made, beautifully presented, plenty and with a lot of variety. You could actually feel the effort put in making each meal special. Our room was spacious, super clean, comfortable and had a great view of the town and mountains. The facilities were accesible and impecable. We only wish we could have talked some more Japanese to thank our host for her wonderful hospitality!

Yunomine Onsen - a beautiful place to stay
The hosts are so nice here. It was a busy night when we stayed with many guests, but it was still a very nice experience, and we felt very welcomed. The onsite onsen is very rustic, and inviting. The local Tsoyboyu is literally a 1min walk away. Our room was basic, but very comfortable. Views of the canal were amazing. The meals that were served - Wow! The meals were large, and delcious. Great experience
We loved staying at Minshuku Kuraya. The house is beautiful and clean, with traditional wooden walls and floors, and paper doors. Our room had the best view we could hope for: one side facing the canal and the forest, the other facing the town. We arrived about 2 hours before the allowed check in, but we were let in the room immediately, and that was great, as it was raining quite hard when we arrived. The hosts were very understanding our our little daughter running everywhere. The Onsen bath was a beautiful experience. The water is just the perfect temperature, and the noise of the canal and the rain outside. We had a bath in the night before bed, and went back for one more dip in the morning.

A comfortable, welcoming, pleasant stay in Yunomine
The Minshuku Kuraya was such a comfortable place to stay. The owner clearly loves both her place, her friends and her family. This made staying here exceptionally pleasant. It was one of a few places where I was able to meet and spend time with Japanese visitors. And, they were lovely! The bath is in an old rock and wood building below the Minshuka -- it offered a perfect soak after a long day. The place was filled with laughter and good smells. I fully enjoyed my night there, and deeply wish I could have stayed longer.

Pretty location, but very thin walls
We had a pleasant stay, but the minshuku was one of the lesser during our stay in Japan. Moist of the mishukus and ryokan are a bit noisy, but in Kuraya the walls must be made of paper. One of the few stays in the center of Yunomine Onsen though.

great location, wonderful private baths
The baths look different from the picture on this website. The tubs are made of cedar. It isn't a bad thing. The baths were separate from the house, down near the river. They were dark and I really liked that. You could soak in peace and quiet without some bright light shining in your eyes. Very nice after a long hike.

Welcoming Minshuku
We had a very clean and comfortable top floor corner room with a view of Yunomine Onsen. Our (heavy) bags were waiting for us in our room. Our excellent host helped us with bus timetables and very kindly drove us back to Hongu Taisha when I discovered I had left my walking poles at the bus stop! We had really delicious food. The minshuku has a very atmospheric onsen down a few steps from the front door. Perfect location, one minute from the bus stop.

Tres agreable

Adequate
After the previous two nights, Minshuku Kuraya was a slight letdown. While there was nothing to complain about per se, it lacked some of the charm of the other places. The owner was polite, but brisk and business-like, the meals were above average but not particularly memorable and the room was small and just slightly damp. We did enjoy the bathhouse attached to the Minshuku.

A relief after such a long day hiking!
Minshuku Kuraya is a great place to relax and unwind after a long day's hike through Kumano Kodo. Accommodations are basic tatami straw mats with sleeping futons. Dinner and breakfast were simple, not otherwise super special. Bath houses were outside and private. My gf and I were the only guests that night so it was like we each had our own private baths. Very close to bus stop and easy to find. Grandsons of the owner are super cute! Would recommend this place if you need a place to relax and unwind

Excellent hots and food but thin walls
The hosts were excellent as was the food. We had to move to another Minshuku the following night and the extra assistance with moving was very much appreciated. However we found that the paper walls of the Minshuku didn't offer sufficient sound-proofing. This meant that we could hear conversations in other rooms and were aware of other visitors visits to the bathroom facilities. Additionally it should be noted that the onsen, although very nice, was not actually in the Minshuku itself.

Charming Minshuku
This little place was very helpful in allowing me to do my laundry there and then hanging up my clothes to dry. While here, I had one day with a severe cold (contracted elsewhere) and had to spend a whole day in my room. That worked out fine. For some reason, this minshuku and others at this Onsen will only allow guests to stay two nights in succession, giving as an excuse that they would be disrespectful to guests if they repeated their meal service. This policy is a gross imposition to travelers. What if I had been sick on the day I was supposed to transfer from one minshuku to another? What misery that would have been.

Thank you for welcoming me into Minshuku Kuraya, it was a wonderful experience staying here. I found that the host was impressive, she was a wonder lady. Amazing exquisite dinner for that 2 days, I won't be able to taste that again. I felt at home even though I don't live in Japan. I appreciate the care and help from the host informing me on the time of breakfast or dinner and as well as being so thoughtful to let me know the Ryujinbus bus timetable the day before my departure. Wonderful minshuku
First night stop after a fall on the Kumano Kodo so was very relieved to get there at 5.30 and warmly greeted by the hostess (daughter of the family?). Felt so inadequate that I don't even know their family name. Please can the Bureau supply this in future. Was given the best room in the house with dual aspect; overlooking the river towards the Tsuboyu Onsen and the road running through the village. Their onsen was great and private as I was the only guest staying. The toilet on the first floor was spotless. The evening meal was a visual feast and wonderful with an interesting carpaccio of deer meat as part of many other delicacies. Portions were generous. The hostess was very kind in transporting my rucksack to the next night's accommodation which made exploring the area and walk to Hongu Taisha much easier.

Charming!
Minshuku Kuraya was a great place to stay. The location is convenient to the bus, baths, and hiking trails, and the village is beautiful. The hosts were very kind, and were able to tell us the best hiking options given the time we had. We had a perfect day based on their advice. The room was comfortable, although because we had to get up early and sound travels a bit between rooms, I was worried about waking the other guests. The private baths were a bit dimly lit and the temperature of the spray was hard to adjust, but they were wonderful after the day's hike. Supper was delicious and gave us a chance to try many different local foods. Because we had to leave before breakfast, they packed some delicious rice balls for us to eat on the bus.

We arrived in Yunomine with the bus from Hongu in the late afternoon, just in time for a splash in the bathhouse as dinner was served at 6. Excellent place
We stayed there 3 nights when exploring the Kumano Kodo on foot. The minshuku is in a very center of the beatiful village, next to the bus stop. It is a typical japanese house having small rooms with minimum of furniture (futon beds, small table, cusions, TV). Our room, common toilets and common areas were very clean and looked like new. The minshuku has a private onsen in an older outbuilding, free for guests: absolutely fantastic large baths with hot water from natural hot spring (one for men and another for women), very clean. The owners were very kind and service oriented, we unfortunately do not speak Japanese so we could not communicate more with them. We did not eat in the minshuku, so we cannot comment on the food quality. One of the best places we stayed in during our trips to Japan.

The house looked old, but inside all seemed recently renovated and refurbished. We liked the quiet and relaxing atmosphere, especially in the dining room. We were able to communicate quite well thanks to the hostess' basic English and our basic Japanese. note: if you like big and fluffy pillows, maybe you should ask beforehand - as a standard there is a flat pillow which took some getting used to.

I had a fantastic experience in a town full of history and character. The minshuku was clean and comfortable, the meals were delicious, and the host was very helpful and friendly. I enjoyed the minshuku's own onsen bath as well as the nearby Tsuboyu (whose ticket booth manager was also very friendly).

Minshuku Kuraya
The host was warm and friendly and very helpful. The traditional japanese food served was one of the best that I've had in Japan. Minshuku was stategically located beside yunomine onsen and I enjoyed my stay thoroughly. Thanks!

Kuraya is a really good place for staying, charming, clean and the best experience we've had at Kumano Kodo. The place was perfect and the meals fantastic! We felt really comfortable.

Minshuku Kuraya, Yunomine
We were given rooms facing the main street, and we could see the activities on the whole street. The onsen bath was so refreshing and relaxing after the walk. One of my friends twisted her ankle while out walking and the owner was very kind to offer medicated plaster.

Nice option by the stream
Admiting you love the river rumour (I do) and don't hate the sulfurous smell (well...) this is a fantastic place to rest in this little village enjoying the historic onsen.

Nice, clean rooms
Basic, but nice and clean rooms. The minshuku has it's own onsen bath, which is perfect after a long day of hiking. Since i had to catch the first bus back to Tanabe around 6.30am i told the owners that i would skip breakfast, which is usually served around 7am - but they insisted to fix me breakfast around 6am.

Simply a WONDERFUL experience!
We are very grateful for the opportunity to pass back our thanks for a wonderful time. Our hosts were a delight to meet and our only regret is in our own inability to converse in Japanese to convey our thanks and praises to these people. Wonderful time - possibly the highpoint of our entire trip in Japan!

great onsen, good service
This minshuku is very well located, has a relaxing onsen and a kind of no-nonsense service. Clean, correct, no bad remarks. We did not have personal contact with the owners / staff.

A really nice and friendly minshuku
I was very satisfied in staying 2 nights at the Minshuku Kuraya. The location is great, on the Kumano Kodo, and very near the famous temple (Kumano Hongu Taisha). The Minshuku was very clean, the japanese food of excellent quality. The owner gave me a warm welcome, and that was really very pleasant.

Excellent private hot bath, though the prior shower on the men side proved a bit difficult to tune between freezing cold and boiling hot. View on the village from the room also was enjoyable.

Charming and Friendly
I was very pleased with the service and my stay at Minshuku Kuraya. My host was looking out for me when I exited the bus which was good since I was turned around and I was looking on the wrong side of the street. So to have her call to me and greet me was welcomed. While they will tell you this house does not speak English, I found there was a level of communication in English that was helpful. When she discovered I was goin got attempt the walk to the river onsen 3 km away, she offered to drive me there and then come back in 1 hour. This was greatly appreciated. Downstairs is the entry and kitchen. I think there is a general eating room on that level. Up charming narrow stairs was my tatami room. It was nice and included tea, a cookie and yukata robe. To complete the charm there were sliding paper soji screens with small pad lock. I did not take the meal plan since I tought $30 for breakfast was overpriced. However do heed the warning that public eateries and food stores are not always open or in the area. But still , the food packages are to overpriced with most of the places listed on Kumano. I was lucky to find one guest house who had street level access to their restaurant. No real English spoken but I had a chicken curry dish jsut before they closed. I tihnk it was $10-12 so not cheap but not $30 either. When I arrived it was in the afternoon and I went to three onsens including a Kawayu river onsen thanks to my host who would not accept extra payment for gas or her time. I also visited Yunomine andthe medicine bath next to it while waiting in the cue. After I was done I went looking for food but found the small mini mart which also serves food was also closed for a little but after I ate it re opened. Knowing some basic Japanese would help to figure out the time things are open or if you rent a car then would be able to drive out. Never the river onsen was also a restaurant that looks over the river bathers. I think the Japanese get a kick out of looking at the Blinding White Euros in their speedos. So I could not rate meals and Kumano must make an N/A (not applicable) so it does not effect the score. Back to the guest house... The bathroom is shared but fully equipped, even with Toto toilet. I did not have time to use their onsen. I took a peak and it had male and female sections and probably as good as the ones I paid to go into. I had tried to use it in the morning but just did not have time. But if staying there longer I would say to have an onsen included is a bonus and why you should look at this house over others. Even though I had to catch the earliest bus the very next day, she was there to send me off and say good-bye. I noticed her watching from the house to be sure I was waiting in the correct spot. I would visit and stay at Minshuku Kuraya again.

I had a pleasant stay here, the owner was friendly but quiet. The meals were pretty good, although not as large as some of the other minshuku I have stayed in. Very near the bus stop and a nice old building. Breakfast was at 7 or 7:30, so if you want to catch the first bus you would have to skip breakfast. I was a bit disappointed that the famous Tsubo-yu onsen (in the hut on the river) was closed for renovation while I was there, although this has nothing to do with the minshuku. The minshuku had their own bath over the river which had a quite small shower area. I recommend this minshuku though as it was value for money.
