The accommodation cannot be recommended. There were three cans of insect spray in every room, and even the (very kind) host warned us about insects. The food was good. However, the washing facilities in the hallway and the toilets were completely inadequate and not clean (dirt, humidity). Due to the poor conditions, we left earlier than planned. You should not offer this accommodation under these circumstances! It is completely overpriced considering the services provided.

Amazing place to stay
After a long and weary day, we were made to feel very welcome by Aki and her husband. We stayed in their beautiful house and had amazing food (supper and breakfast) prepared with care and explanation. They were very helpful with Kumano information and local history. I would stay here again for sure!

Very nice location
We enjoyed our visit to Kawayu Onsen. Minshuku Sumiya was very conveniently located, and we could easily borrow swimming suits and a shovel to dig a hole in the river and enjoy the natural onsens. There was also two small bathrooms and onsens onsite. Sumiya also had washing/drying onsite which was very helpful. We pre-ordered the dinner and breakfast, and both were very delicious. Our host was also very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend

Comfortable minshuku in Kawayu Onsen

Wonderful stay with super cute host!
We reached kawayu late after a long day of hike from Chikatsuyu to Hongu Taisha. Nonetheless, the host prepared a very - because I was starving! - delicious dinner for us with the centrepiece being the duck nabe. And there's tempura, sashimi and baked fish caught from the river. We had warabimochi as dessert. The host took a photo of us, and we did not expect him to print it out and give it to us during breakfast the next day. Super cute! Room was cosy and next to the reception. Again, the futon was so comfortable, I concussed and woke up disoriented. Bath was luxurious even though the photos don't do justice. The hot water felt so goood~ Bus stop was right beneath the minshuku. They have a massage chair in the lobby. Lunch bento was a delicious box of surprise featuring a bit of everything native, including a humongous mushroom.

the onsen region
This place was amazing, with natural warm water coming out from the ground just by digging a hole along the river. This place had a bath with warm water in the bathroom and along the river there is a public one which was perfect after a long day hiking.
The dinner and breakfast I had there were probably the best of the entire trek, a lot of very good food!

The location and service here was absolutely amazing. In our whole 14 day trip to Japan, the dinner that was prepared for us here was honestly our most favorite.
If you are hiking the Kumano Kodo, having a place to rest and relax like this is absolutely necessary.

This place is special!
I just absolutely loved staying at this spot. The host is so incredibly warm and welcoming. The meals we had here were some of the best of the trip! They have thought of all the details-even extra bathing suits if you want to enjoy the outdoor onsen nearby. I also loved the private onsen! :)

本宮からのバスでかめや前下車目の前にありました。仙人風呂も100M程度の距離でした。入浴用の水着と仙人風呂までのタオル地のパーカーを無料で貸していただき、行き返りまったく問題ありませんでした。近露から本宮まで歩いたのでかなりエネルギーを消費しましたが夕食は非常に分量があり、またお味もおいしかったです。朝ごはんもおいしく申し分ありませんでした4．

Wonderful stay
We really enjoyed our stay at Minshuku Sumiya.
The location was ideal, in a beautiful village and very close to the Sennin-buro river bath.
The hosts were kind and welcoming, and everything was well-organized and convenient. From the cozy meals with jazz music to the tasty food and the complimentary robes and shoes for the river bath, everything was thoughtfully arranged to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Wonderful stay during Kumano Kodo walk
This was a wonderful stay and the dinner was the best meal we had in Japan (the breakfast and lunch box were also phenomenal). The owner was extremely friendly and played guitar with us. He also showed us how to dig our own natural hot spring on the riverbank, which was a great experience (though the onsen in minshuku was much nicer). I hope to come back one day, as the owner has a lot of local knowledge of the nature trails in the area. Great prices as well.

A lovely place with nice host
We were impressed with the accommodations, onsen and meals. one thing is very impressive, we did not know the lunch boxes are the best until we open them up, sitting around with 2 other groups, comparing the lunch boxes. Ours are winning. LOL.
It was raining in the morning, the hostess offered us umbrella, and also exchange her whatsapp with us, in case we need to call the cab, as we don't speak Japanese. what a lovely place, we really appreciate all the help they offered, will definitely stay in this place if we ever come back to this area.

Host was very helpful. Our room was great. Spacious. Traditional. There was a small onsen bath which was fine for a quick one and then it's really close to the outdoor onsen. Had a great stay. The dinner was nice and social, was nice to have a bit more interaction as often dinners are served and you are left to it. Breakfast was nice and fresh too.

I enjoyed such superb and delicious meals including the coffee! The outside onsen bath on the river was a truly local experience and certainly helped me recover from 4 days of hiking on the Kohechi Route. The machine washer was an excellent service since I definitely needed to do laundry!

Family of four - walking the Nakahechi Route
Our stay at Minshuku Sumiya for two nights was a great break from our our hike along the Nakahechi Route. The food was tremendous...we experienced different delicacies each day, with the menu changing for both supper and breakfast for each of the days. The accommodation had its own in-house bath but we were also able to experience the Sennin-buro river bath. The complimentary robes for use in the river bath were very much appreciated. The accommodation was very accessible to the Kumano Hongu Taisha and Yunomine Onsen, which we were easily able to access by local bus.

The guesthouse is well-equipped and comfortable, it is only a 2-minute walk from the public onsen. The 3 of us booked 2 rooms and were placed upstairs so that we had our own shared toilet and washbasin, but we still had to use the shared bathroom with others downstairs. Bus stop is just right in front of the guesthouse which is very convenient. The food was very delicious, especially the steaming hot pot we were able to enjoy in the cold weather.

It's old hotspring guesthouse
After the longest part of the trail completion, I had a really good rest in this old onsen guesthouse. This area is not Yunomine onsen area, far from crowded tourists, it's more quiet, peaceful and comfortable.

Warm hospitality
We stayed at sumiya for 3 nights while walking Kumano Kodo. During those 3 days, Sumiya was not only a base for us, it was our home. The hosts went extra miles to meet our needs such as preparing simple rice ball lunch box so that we did not go hungry on the trail. We could do laundry so that we had clean clothes the next day. The facility isn’t fancy, more like a traditional Japanese home. But, it was a home away from home.

Sweet Hosts and Gourmet Meals
I was warmly welcomed by the young couple running Minshuku Sumiya. They have free tokens for the local public bath, although the minshuku's bath is great, too. The dinner they cooked for me was amazing with multiple tasty dishes that included little shrimp that they had caught in the river that morning. Breakfast was equally fabulous. My stay ended with them driving me to the trail head and ensuring I was headed in the right direction. I'd absolutely stay here again!
