Description
Family-run Minshuku
Minshuku Tateishi is a friendly, relaxed family-run guesthouse in Kawayu Onsen.
There are two buildings which are both two story wooden structures: main building and annex. The main building has Japanese style guestrooms on the second floor. On the first floor is the communal dining room and onsen bath, which can be used privately.
The public onsen next door is also available with complimentary tickets, and of course the river hot spring bath is free to use.
Meals feature fresh local ingredients such as ayu sweetfish.
Minshuku Tateishi makes a great base to explore the Hongu area and surrounding Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.

Perfect food, view, hospitality and private onsen
I stayed 1 night in Minshuku Tateishi and truly enjoyed their hospitality, politeness and the richness of the dinner, breakfast. Both dinner and breakfast was fantastic with so many dishes, including japanese barbeque and unique tastes from the area. The booklet describes the food in the menu was excellent with all the details in english. Public Onsen just at the next door and they have given it's entrance ticket as complimentary. Inside the guesthouse there is also a nice private onsen. It is a family run guesthouse so you feel like you live with the family rather than just a guesthouse. The room does have a view of Oto river. Bus stop is 50 meters away. Strongly recommend if you are planning to stay in Kawayu Onsen.

Great Guest House
We enjoyed our stay at Minshuku Tateishi, which had wonderful food and nearby access to the Senninburo (outdoor hot springs in the river). This was a one of a kind experience that can only be done in winter I believe. The baths inside the building were clean and spacious. While the rooms and hallways are a bit dated, it had little bearing on our stay. The family was very nice and wonderful.

Great place. Loved the meals and host family.
They really took a lot of care and effort in preparing the dinner. It was very enjoyable. The bath has a sizeable onsen which I was able to enjoy. Good sized room for the 3 of us.

Warm stay at Kawayu Onsen
Super lovely stay at Kawayu onsen runned by a family. Meals served with love, and plenty of variety over our 2 nights stay. On-site small private onsen to soak in, but owners also showed us across the bridge to an outdoor natural onsen.

Distance from Kumano
I think Kumano Travel should provide clear instructions of buses or walking route from Kumano Kodo trail to accommodation which is more than 1-2km from trail…it was a big surprise to have to walk another 3+km after Day 2 long hike!

Exceptional food
Tateishi was a real surprise and very cosy. with super kind hosts. Baths got no rating, because I didn't use them. They took me to the public onsen as the shower was so busy and I was close to hypothermic after walking 8 hours in the rain. It was the best thing to warm up again. But the real surprise was the exceptional food. It was so beautiful, delicate and varied. I'd go back here in a heartbeat. Loved it.

What an amazing family and experience
A family that runs the location were so welcoming, and the food that they prepared was outstanding. This location was one of my favorites because of the proximity to the river onsen. When I think back on my trip, this may have been my favorite stay.

A wonderfully hospitable minshuku in Kawayu Onsen
We loved this place - and in particular the hospitality and generosity of the owners. The dinner and breakfast were wonderful - not just for the quality of food but the abundance of different courses and dishes - and the owners were lovely. We would definitely recommend it, and would certainly be happy to to go there again ourselves.

Stayed here two nights
I've stayed at Minshuku Tateishi four times now. This time, I opted to spend two nights here, I like it "that much". The staff and owners of the minshuku are incredible, and very friendly and sociable. The fresh-caught river fish was delicious, along with the rest of their meals served. The location is ideal for enjoying Kawayu Onsen. Bus service is just right in front of the minshuku. In the past, the owner drove me to the trailhead of the Kumano Kodo, as needed. I will stay here again in 2026.

A great place to stay
We really enjoyed our two nights at Mishuku TATEISHI. The rooms, food and service were all wonderful. And the location, right on the river was a special treat. We borrowed spades from reception to dig holes in the river and allow hot springs to warm us.

Amazing food by the river
We finished our 4 day walk along the Koheshi trail in this wonderful minshuku. We were greeted very warmly by the owners, who had taken care of our luggage and prepared a very nice room for us. The location is great, just next to the river and the family bath is very nice. But the food is the great star of this Minshuku. It was some of the best we had in our whole month in Japan (and the food in Japan is delicious). The ingredients and preparation were very refined, everything is locally sourced and prepared with great art. We hope to come back some day!

Wonderful and Helpful Host and Great Food
Our host was friendly and the food was excellent. Loved the dinner especially. So good! I didn't arrange for luggage transfer but we decided when we got there that we should do that if possible. I asked our host and he was able to arrange for luggage transfer. So appreciative that he was able to help us with that. We enjoyed the onsen there too.

Warm and kind hosts
We loved our stay at Minshuku Tateishi. The family that owns it are so lovely and genuine! Incredible meals that were truly local - including fish caught by the family. Our room (basic but very clean) overlooked the gorgeous river. We loved the free riverside onsen (public and mixed, so you need swimwear) and appreciated the ponchos and plastic slides to wear to-and-from. Keep an eye out for the butterflies on the riverbanks!

Amazing family guesthouse with superb food
We loved our stay in Minshuku Tateishi. Warm family hospitality, comfortable room with traditional decor, beautiful view over the river. We had a dip in the public Onsen in the river and then had another in the guesthouse. Great way to finish a day hiking. It’s 1 minute from the bus stop. Dinner and breakfast were the absolute highlights. Superb multi course meal of local fresh fish, soups and vegetables with divine pickle accompaniments. I would go back just to have dinner there again!

One of a kind experience after a long day of hiking
Everything about Minshuku Tateishi is worth mentioning. From the warm hospitality upon arrival to the exceptional food. The food were some of the best we've had throughout the whole Japan trip. The private bath was so well prepared and equipped that it made me want to stay another night just to relax and use the bath. Will definitely come back again in the future. Kudos to the Minshuku Tateishi team.

Nice Warm Onsen
After a long day, the private onsen bath was a great way to wind down. The food was great with large portions and reception was warm. The guest room is a little tight with 3 people together but otherwise cozy. Location is a little far if hiking however it’s right next to the onsen streams! Amazing and warm views for winter.

Charming Getaway in Kawayu Onsen
Minshuku Tateishi is a delightful family-run guesthouse nestled in the picturesque Kawayu Onsen district. This charming accommodation offers a truly authentic Japanese experience, complete with traditional guestrooms, communal onsen baths, and delicious local cuisine. Highlights of my stay: Cozy and Comfortable: The guestrooms are clean, comfortable, and decorated in a traditional Japanese style. The main building features communal dining and private bath (onsen) areas, providing a welcoming atmosphere for socializing with other guests. Relaxing Onsen Experience: The guesthouse offers private onsen baths, allowing guests to enjoy the soothing waters in a tranquil setting. Additionally, complimentary tickets are provided for the public onsen next door, and the nearby river hot spring bath is a must-try. Delicious Local Cuisine: The meals at Minshuku Tateishi feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring a delicious and authentic dining experience. Convenient Location: Minshuku Tateishi is ideally situated for exploring the Hongu area and the surrounding Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes. Overall, I highly recommend Minshuku Tateishi to anyone seeking a peaceful and memorable stay in Kawayu Onsen. Easy bus ride to main Hongu area if needed. Check times!!! and check that you are on right side of the road to catch the bus 😅. The friendly staff, comfortable accommodations, and stunning natural surroundings make it a truly special place.

Best ryokan experience ever! Best food! Best hosts!
Staying in Minshuku Tateishi is like being invited into someone's home. We felt very welcome and part of the family. Hero, was the son who met us and gave us a tour of the rooms, their own onsen bath, the dining area and the river onsen across the bridge. The 10-course omakase dinner is the star of the entire stay. The food was delicious! There was a printed description in English of what each food item was and how to eat it. Breakfast was likewise a labor of love. The onsen by the river is something to be experienced. We met a few travelers in the onsen and had a wonderful time exchanging experiences. I was apprehensive in sleeping on a tatami bed for fear of it being hard on my back but the tatami beds in Minshuku were soft and well-padded. Very helpful after a day of walking. The mother of Hero was also so gracious in offering to drive us to the start of our hike in Hosshinmon Oji and she even brought our 2 small luggages all the way to our hotel in Katsuura since she was going to that town anyway. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness and generosity. Minshuku Tateishi deserves 6-stars or more!

Awesome place! 100% recommendation!
This place is a real pearl! It's a family run minshuku with their own onsen inside. The rooms are small and cute. You have everything you need. The owners are so lovely and give you the real feeling of japanese hospitality. The food we have been provided with was the best on the whole trip. You can enjoy the onsen inside as well as you can go outside and hang around in the open air onsen close to a river close to the minshuku. Finally, this place is everything tourists visiting Japan dream of. Enjoying onsen, wear yukata and eating a lot of tasty local dishes. I absolutely recommend this place and would visit them again if possible. Many thanks to the team of Minshuku Tateishi.

Accomodation, dinner and b'fast
Although the accomodation is basic it was clean and comfortable. The hosts were very accomodating and washed and died our clothes on arrival. The rooms were quiet and comfortable and located across from the outdoor Onsen and beautiful river, a refreshing swim was had after a very long walk. The food was the best we've had and were blown away by the quality and quantity of food. It was a very traditional experience and much care was taken to present the abundance of food. I would definitely stay again and not hesitate to include the meals, not only for the quality but because there are little alternatives in the area.

Sweet Onsen excellent food
We loved our first minshuku. The onsen was in the river and public so people throughout this tiny town were using it. The river was cold and refreshing as a respite from the super hot onsen. During dinner we had a lovely couple from Osaka there and they explained all the food to us. It was very helpful and everything was delicious. The father and son would fish for the fish daily and mom would cook it up. It was a very authentic experience!

Absolutely recommended
I think usually people prefer to go to Yunomine onsen, because it represents more the ideal of the typical "onsen town", but I really want to make a plea here for going to Kawayu and staying at Minshuku Tateishi. First lets talk about Kawayu. As a village it is maybe not as picturesque as Yunomine, but its location along the river is incredibly beautiful. For me it was a very special place, and I have been to many onsen towns. The reason is its thermal waters, which seep out of the gravel of the riverbank. This means that you can create your own small onsen bath along the riverbank with your hands or with a shovel, beautiful views into the mountainside included. What is also incredible is the permanent public bath on the opposite side of the river. You can bath under the stars if the sky is clear, just wow! There is a frequent bus to the other onsen villages and Hongu Taisha, so you want miss out if you want to do a daytrip there. I also loved my stay at Tateishi. The food was plenty and very delicious, my room was clean and spacious, and they also have a nice inside bath, which can be privately occupied. Also, all the staff was very accomodating, I had a great time. Recommended! All in all I can only highly recommend to come to Kawayu, it was one of my most memorable onsen experiences for sure!

Wonderful stay at Minshuku Tateishi!
LOCATION: Minshuku Tateishi is very near the bus station. It’s easy to find. There is a vending machine just outside the inn. It was helpful because there were no stores that were open when I was there. ROOM: I stayed in the Yanagara Room. It was really spacious for one person. I think the room can accommodate up to two to three people. I had a view of the river from my room. It was lovely. FUTON: The futon was quite firm so people who are not used to it may find it uncomfortable. However, I had no problems sleeping. It was a good night’s sleep. ROOM AMENITIES: The room had a small table, kettle, tea cups, a TV, airconditioner, some hangers. MINSHUKU FACILITIES: The bathroom is shared so guests have to be mindful not to use the bathroom for a long time. The bath was really, really comfortable for me. It was nice to soak in the bath after a long day. Guests are provided with the usual , toothbrush and toothpaste, bath towel. Toilets and sinks are shared but there are enough for all guests. FOOD: The food was really, really excellent. It was a wonderful experience. Everything was prepared well and both dinner and breakfast were really enjoyable. STAFF: The minshuku is family-owned so there is that “part of the family” feeling. Also, Kobuchi-san drove me to Hosshinmon-oji after breakfast. It was really such great service! I would love to stay at this place again in the future. ありがとうございます。

The food here is absolutely incredible and the innkeepers are so kind and helpful. I really appreciated that they gave us a ride to our morning hike. Both the breakfast and dinner were beautiful and delicious.

Delightful minshuku
Our first experience of rural Japan and we were delighted by our kind hosts. We had a wonderful night’s sleep and two delicious meals, thoughtfully served. And our hosts kindly drove us to the start of our walk. Wonderful!

Wonderful Stay at Kawayu Onsen
Our 1st night on the Kumano Kodo was at Minshuku Tateishi. We had a comfortable corner room overlooking the river, with windows on both sides and the sound of a stream. It was serene and soothing. The dinner and breakfast were first class; in our opinion, the best we had on the trip. It was more elaborate than we expected, more ryokan than minshuku. The meal was also made more enjoyable by being able to choose various sakes (extra payable but worth it). The outdoor onsen (over the bridge and almost directly across from Tateishi) was fabulous, and then to be able to soak in the on-site onsen later. Small grumble: would have been nice to be able to sleep in a little later and not to be hurried out. But overall, a comfortable room with a great view, delicious meals, great location (loved the peace and tranquility of Kawayu Onsen), and little touches like Tateishi offering ample yukatas and a lift to Hosshinmon-oji (no need to rush for the public bus) made for a wonderful stay! We would definitely return.

Awesome hospitality
The ladies at this stay were amazingly hospitable, we even sat with them by the tv for a good 30 minutes. The bath near this stay is one of the cutest baths we've been in Japan, def make sure to stop by when you stay here.

Great!
We were greeted by the owners son with a friendly greeting and hot tea. Room was a small traditional room, and with the table and bed placement when we arrived, was a little tough to move around. Private bath here was amazing and intimate. Food here was amazing, 15-20 dishes for each meal was more than enough. Thank you for the great stay!

Wonderful Onsen on a Beautiful River
Great location right on the river. Relaxing bath - For some reason we weren't allowed in the river. The service was great. The food was amazing (some of the best and most interesting food we've had in Japan!) The room had a great view of the river, however it smelled like cigarettes. We opened the windows to bring in the river breeze.

Amazing place!
This place was amazing. Having the river and onsen be right across from the accomodations can't be beat. The meals were fantastic, and the hosts hospitable. My only complaint is that the Japanese beds weren't substantial enough. The pads were quite thing, but I am only really accustomed to western beds. Other than that I would love to return some day!

Third night on the trail, arrived late, left early, didn’t get to experience the river bathing or full Onsen experience, but it looked relaxing and fun. Minshuku was central located, reception was perfunctory, room was a good size, and had a view over the river. Very quiet. Room had been deodorised - couldn’t tell smokers had been in it. Bath was excellent. Meals were fine, but the quality wasn’t as high as in other places. Restful night, and owner generously offered to drive us to trailhead the next day.

The host served tea upon arrival. Please note that the host actually served the tea and that it was not just a tea thermos that had been prepared in the room. I think this act of serving tea is the height of graciousness and hospitality. Also note that this minshuku serves loose leaf tea only at all times (not tea bags). In addition, there were bouquets of fresh flowers throughout the minshuku, including in the guest room. The meals were enticing, delicious, and served with pride and elegance. The family members were kind. Thank you for your hospitality and for a memorable stay.

Japanse house with awesome food experience
This accomodation gave us such a nice experience! The place is classical Japanese. We were the only tourist (wich we really liked). The room was beautifull and quiet. We enjoyed the onsen after a long day walk and than we had diner. The dinner and breakfast were simply amazing! Such a variety of flavoures and little dishes and drinks. Loved it. The owner and employees were so kind and the group of 8 happy elder Japanese people made it extra cosy! Thanks so much. X Gemma and Bram - The Netherlands

Lovely guesthouse, unfortunate misunderstanding
I am so sorry for this misunderstanding! I can really only praise the incredible friendliness and care of the hosts, who thought something had happened to me when I wasn't at the pickup location, and who contacted everyone involved to see if I was ok. I am so sorry for that misunderstanding, but incredibly thankful that they were so thorough in trying to find out where I was! I didn't rate the baths because there was typhoon damage and the onsen wasn't working at 100%

In the heart of kawayu onsen with shuttle transport to koguchi
The food in Minshuku Tateishi was delicious. Minshuku Tateishi also offers a shuttle transport directly to koguchi - which is on the beginning of the ogumotori-goe. It takes around 30min with car to koguchi. Breakfast can be served really early in the morning so that you have a early start on the Ogumotori-goe section of the Nakahechi route.

Exceptional
Clean and cozy room. Excellent onsen. Great location, a minute walk to a bus stop. Delicious meals. Exceptional owners who were super kind to help me with everything such as lunch box, laundry and especially gave me a ride to Koguchi for my Kumano Kodo walking as Mrs. Owner also needed to go to Shingu on the day! Would love to stay here again when I come back.

This guesthouse was hit hard by the big typhoon few months earlier and had just re-opened the day we arrived. The place look spotless and has the kindest owners! They drove us into town with their own car and brought us to the starting point the next day as well. It has a private onsen which was very big and well taken care of. The food was again phenomenal and the rooms were big. Highly recommend this guesthouse!

Japanese tradional stay
We loved our stay here. Hosts were extremely welcoming and helpful. The bus stopped right next to our accomodation. The Onsen experience by the river was fantastic, in the hot onsen into the cool, clean and clear river a number of times. The accomodation, dinner and breakfast experience exceeded our expectations. Thank you for this memory. Host even dropped us off at next stop.

A great place to stay
The house is a little outdated, and that holds part of the charm of this guesthouse. The staff was amazing: welcoming, helpful, they answered all of our questions. The room and futons were very comfortable, with a great view over the river and hillside trees... Dinner and breakfast were incredible, really, and kawayu onsen is so quite and remote. We heartily recommend this minchuku and this onsen.

Everything was perfect. A great bonus: open air onsen under a sakura tree and just in front of the guesthouse. Hosts very friendly (many family members serving the guests!). I ordered a bento for my lunch and they made me an excellent one; in addition, they gave me an orange as a gift! The also gave me ride from hiking arrival point to their house and from their house to the departure hiking point next day.

We had a lovely stay at Minshuku Tateishi! Everybody there was very friendly and helpful, and patient with my limited Japanese. The food was delicious - and there was a lot of it! It was very close to Senninburo, so perfect to bathe there and then head back for dinner.

Kuwaya Onsen
Everything was great except the super hard wheat pillows. Staff were very friendly and the meals were excellent. As I was there in February, the large river onsen was open. What a treat! Set in the river this warm water onsen is the size of an Olympic swimming pool. As I soaked up the warmth, it was snowing! I will never forget this place!
