Description
Welcoming Minshuku
Minshuku Teruteya is a small guesthouse tucked into the mountain side in the hot spring village of Yunomine Onsen, and is run by the hospitable Ms. Fujikawa. The meals are lovingly handmade with fresh, local ingredients. Teruteya is the princess in the legend of Oguri Hangan, who was miraculously healed in the Tsuboyu Bath. The three guestrooms are located on the second floor and the communal dining room and onsen bath are on the ground floor. This inn is decorated with handmade crafts and paintings by Ms. Fujikawa.
※ Minshuku Teruteya can only accept reservations 1 month or less in advance.
(KUMANO TRAVEL can only accept requests 20 days or more in advance, so be advised of a short booking window.)

Great location, service, room, and food!
I was quite impressed with Minshuku Teruteya! The location was great and the food was a major highlight of our trip to Japan. The owner was pleasant and very accommodating. The private onsen downstairs was a bit dated but sufficient and clean. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

A welcome retreat after a long day hiking
A fantastic and very welcome retreat after a long (30km+) day hiking. The private onsen was just what we needed to soothe our tired bodies. The meals were truly amazing! So many dishes and all delicious. Thank you!

Nice and well kept Minshuku
Well kept guesthouse. The owner is very nice and welcoming. She made sure the temperature of the Onsen was not to hot, which happens in other locations without any one telling you! Both the dinner and the breakfast were excellent and the owner helped me ordering a lunch box which was very nice too. The view from my room was very pleasant.

A nice traditional Japanese room, bright and warm with everything we needed. Our host went to a lot of trouble preparing our supper which really filled us up! A very economical lodging considering we had free access to the onsen!

Cute Town & a Traditional Stay
I enjoyed this stay and definitely recommend it. Yunomine Onsen is a pretty small place and this minshuku is very centrally located but it's still very quiet at night. I stayed in a Japanese-style room which was cute and comfortable. The host provided a yukata and jacket for my stay. It was a pleasure to have a traditional ryokan stay. There are two baths with hot spring water. It was sooo nice to have a private soak. The host is a lovely woman and dinner and breakfast were amazing. So delicious and so much food. Yunomin is a very cute and picturesque as well. There's one little bar in town and I saw monkeys in the morning!

A wonderful place to stay at Yunomine Onsen. Food is homemade and fulfilling. The bath draws from the onsen waters so you can relax after your hike. The obasan who operates the minshuku was very hospitable and kind. Would recommend to anybody looking to stay in Yunomine Onsen along the Kumano Kodo.

Lovely ryokan in Yunomine Onsen
Very comfortable little ryokan, easily accessible by bus/ private car. The accommodation was very comfortable and clean. A little lady runs it and she prepared both dinner and breakfast for me. Lovely room, great food!
LOCATION: Minshuku Teruteya is near the bus stop. It’s behind another minshuku but at a higher area. So, from my room, I had a good view of the onsen town and the mountain range. Also, Tsuboyu is within walking distance. There is a small store near Tsuboyu where one can have coffee and relax while waiting for their turn to use the onsen. There is also a small convenience store that sells essential things for travelers. ROOM: The room was spacious for one person. I think the room can accommodate up to four people. The room was really clean and felt elegant. Guests have to be careful about the tatami mats though. FUTON: The futon was quite firm so people who are not used to it may find it uncomfortable. However, I had no problems sleeping. It was a good night’s sleep. ROOM AMENITIES: The room had a small table, kettle, tea cups, a TV, a wall fan, an air conditioner, some hangers. MINSHUKU FACILITIES: The bathroom is shared so guests have to be mindful not to use the bathroom for a long time. There’s a separate bath for men and for women. It was enjoyable to soak in the bath after a day of hiking. Guests are provided with the usual , toothbrush and toothpaste, bath towel. Toilets and sinks are shared but there are enough for all guests. FOOD: Food prepared by Fujikawa-san was really, really excellent. It was a wonderful experience. Everything was prepared well and both dinner and breakfast were really enjoyable. She prepared a duck dish and deer sashimi. STAFF: Fujikawa-san was very kind and accommodating. She was helpful.

We got a very nice and brigth room in yonumine onsen. The place looks like a house of 80's. It s a bit vintage but really clean. The old lady owner is very welcoming and warm. Cute little Minshuku
The owner was very friendly and welcoming. We had a small room which was just perfect, with a nice view of the small village and surrounding mountains, it was really peaceful and relaxing. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing, sooo good! The minshuku has it's own tiny onsen, which looks a bit rough, but gets the job done! You can always go to some of the other onsens in the village if you want to try something more.

Nice Mishuku
A tradicional Minshuku that the owner made feel us in our home. The breakfast and the dinner was outstanding and let us the chance to taste a local cuisine as my mother could do. The building was cosy with and overwhelming views in Yunomine onsen. The location is good because it is not close to the main road. We could left our luggage before checking in and they move our heavy luggage to our room (thank you very much).

We very much enjoyed our stay at Minshuku Teruteya. We arrived on a rainy day and were greated with towels and warm words. Afterwards we enjoyed a private onsen experience. Overpriced
We stayed two nights in Yunomine onsen in two different locations. Teruteya was clearly overpriced. The room was nice but the whole place felt empty and cold. The lady working there was nice enough but it did not feel like we were in a minshuku since there was no more interation than in a hotel. The food was alright but not exceptional, it was mostly cold as well and frankly after walking the whole day and stying in the mountains where it is quite wet and cold it would have been nice to enjoy a warm meal. The baths were nice enough to warm us up though.

cozy room with onsen and attentive owner
The room is suitable for 1 person with appropriate amenities inside. The restrooms are shared but very clean and modern. The bath includes onsen which is very convenient because you don't have to go outside for onsen. The meals were generous and delicious and the owner is very attentive and helpful.

Small, cozy minshuku with very local feel
Lot of respect for the owner of this small minshuku as she appears to be running everything herself. The food was really good. The room and bathroom were a bit old, but the futon was comfortable and the view from our room was great. I liked the fact that you can take a bath in water from the natural hot springs. You really feel that you are a guest in a local person's house, which was a very nice experience.

Homey stay in the midst of typhoon
The host was very welcoming and helpful with our wet overalls. The bath was not extravagant and small as well but it certainly warmed us up. The best bath we had ever have during our hike. Food was good as well. Overall a thumbs-up for the quality of the onsen water and the service from the host. I would like to thank the host for giving me her big plastic cover to serve as a rain cover for my bag.

Minshuku Teruteya
Minshuku Teruteya locates in the center of town, within walking distance to stores and other shrines in the area. Room at Teruteya is tidy and cleaned, there is a small onsen that allow male and female to bath on a first come first served notice. The meals provide at the lodging are quite good, the older woman host are dilligent and solely to serve all guests at the lodge. She is gentle and speaks some English make our visit more comfortable and easier to ask for something we need.

Almost like Disneyland, but not Vrelly
The hostess was fantastic, prepared amazing dishes in traditional way. The room, for having tatami mats did not smell from aging, which was perfect! I guess it's a cultural thing, but I'm not used to having slippers for every room, but I learned. For being in the middle of nowhere, it's now a part of me I'll never forget.

one of the best accomodation in our trip in japan
We felt here the true spirit of traditional accomodation in japan, in all aspects from reception of our friendly host to the private hot bath and with the very good quality meals, even if some rice and fish at breakfast is not always easy for european stomach. This accomodation located in yunomine onsen is very pleasant because away from the far more crowdy place of hongu taisha (every tourists go there). Yunomine onsen had a perfect peaceful mood (with even some beautiful monkeys in the trees) for starting kumano kodo walks. For us this minshuku teruteya and the evening in yunomine onsen is one of our best memory of our one month trip in japan. Thanks a lot!

Convenient minshuku for Kumano hike
The minshuku Teruteya's rooms are very clean and nice and they provide a lot of amenities. The futon was comfortable and the welcome tea and snack were tasty. However, the hostess seemed very shy about talking with me and, for some reason, she served dinner to the other (Japanese) guests a half hour before serving me. While this gave me time to clean up before dinner, it was strange to walk into the room a half hour after the other guests started eating. Overall though, the food was tasting and the host was friendly.

Elegant home living in a small guest house
A lovely guesthouse set back off the road. Traditional Japanese style with largish tatami bedroom, shared onsen bath and toilets. A quiet location only spoilt by airconditioner compressor noise. Fantastic genuine hostess who goes out of her way to be friendly and helpful. A wonderful cook and gardener. We love the small touches - the paintings on the wall, the flower arrangements and being met at the bus when we arrived. Recommended for those seeking genuine Japanese hospitality.

I had a great stay at Teruteya with very nice dinner and breakfast. A clean and relaxed place. The only minor was that the bath was really hot, too hot for me to fully enjoy, which however I did after very slowly adjusting to its temperature. Great surprise
I wasn't quite sure what to expect and Minshuku Teruteya was one of the very good surprises of our trip. Yunomine Onsen is a truly small village with a lot of charm. The Minshuku is very clean, comfortable with a homely feeling. There are two semi-private baths which you can use as a couple and which use the hot-spring waters. The landlady is discreet yet welcoming. And the dinners were simply the best of our three weeks of culinary delights in Japan.

I love staying here with Fujisawa-san. She is a very charming lady that runs the place, and she cooks breakfast and dinner for us. We stayed for 2 nights, and felt very welcome. Extremely pleased with accommodations
Kumano Travel arranged this booking for us and we could not have been happier with our stay. The guesthouse owner was very helpful despite our inability to speak Japanese. She prepared two of the most amazing meals we had during our stay in Japan. The room was a good size for two people and our luggage. The home was easy to find and we loved the tiny town of Yunomine Onsen. The only reason I rated the bathrooms lower was because I only used the toilet, not the shower or bathtub, so I cannot speak to their quality. Toilets were clean and we just never had time to soak in the bath. We would highly recommend this guesthouse.

Wonderful stay; very comfortable
I very much enjoyed my stay. The innkeeper is wonderful and extremely helpful. The food is excellent and of high quality- I ate practically every single morsel, including the fish head, which I never do (and it was delicious). The facility was very clean and my room was comfortable. I like the in-room hot tea and the robe (!) The robe is glorious and I wore it the entire time. The internet in the room has limited bars so if you want internet, get a room close to the upstairs toilet or go to the toilet, otherwise you may have difficulty accessing the internet. I would definitely return!

Great little minshuku
Very comfortable and clean, in the beautiful little onsen town. All the amenities are provided so don't worry about bringing much with you. The onsen bath was very hot. After bathing there was a fresh yukata to change into, and then dinner in the dining room with the other guests, but at separate tables. That doesn't stop everybody from having a chat though. The kaiseki dinner was the most adventurous meal we've had so far in Japan... be prepared for a whole fish, and maybe even deer sashimi. I was apprehensive at first but it was all delicious.

Great onsen, and the best tsukemono I've eaten in Japan!
We took the last bus from Hongu to Yunomine onsen. The hostess kindly welcomed us at the bus stop and guided us to the minshuku. The dinner is ready and amazingly delicious! Usually I'm not used to eat the tsukemono, but I ate them up because it tasted so good. My friend lost her wallet in the room, we were informed and back to the minshuku in the next day. The home owner is a lovely lady and very accommodating. Knowing some very basic Japanese went a long way in helping communicate with her. She respected privacy and was prompt to my needs (dinner/breakfast times). I can see how the in-house onsen might visually turn-off some visitors, but once you get in you realize its pretty clean and has a wooden finish as the bath-base. The single guestroom was great. Extremely clean, and furnished with a (free-operating) AC unit! Nice, quaint spot in a very small town. Would stay again.

What a phenomenal place!
This place was the highlight of our trip. An incredible minshuku in an incredible village. The lady who owns it was extremely warm and welcoming; we arrived a little late, but she was perfectly nice about it and we had a lovely dinner waiting for us. I loved the ancient feel of the village and this picturesque minshuku did not disappoint. Lovely onsen baths inside, too. We will definitely return.

Very nice
I didn't end up taking a bath at the Minshuku, but the baths seemed nice, small, but would serve their purpose. The owner was very kind, helpful and warm. On the November long weekend her grandson was there helping out and he was adorable! The food was tasty and the bento boxes were great. No wifi, but a great location.

Hard to find again and had to ask for some assistance to locate the guesthouse. The owner was very accomodating but the accomodation was dated the Onsen in need of some looking after. Wouldn't have stayed here again and being non smokers the place had a smokers scent. Food was good and catered well for vegetarians

Hair everywhere
This place was disappointing in so many aspects. Firstly, there was lack in the usual beautiful Japanese hospitality from the lady there. Something felt off from the start, but then I found a long piece of hair chopped up in our pickles. If that wasn't enough, there was a small bug in another dish of mine! The sashimi deer meat was frozen solid and generally the food was lacking love. Then I found about 5 long pieces of black hair in my futon, and the outer jacket for the robe provided had about ten pieces of blond hair! The homemade yoghurt was very nice though. We really loved the town of Yunomine Onsen and really enjoyed cooking our onsen egg and sweet potato along the river so it was a pity the accommodation soured our experience there.

I enjoyed my time at the Minshuku Teruteya. The staff were very friendly and made me feel welcome. My room was clean and plenty big enough for just me. The meals were ok although the dinner included some sashimi which was still half frozen which wasn't good. I didn't use the baths as I went to try the public onsen instead.

A long-winded review
When I reached Hongu, and before taking the bus to this Minshuku at Yunomine Onsen, I paid a visit to the Tourist Information centre to ask for a courier service to be booked for my luggage to be sent forward from here to Kii-Katsuura. The lady was very helpful, and after making a few phone calls, filled in the necessary paperwork for me to take along to the Minshuku. As I was walking to the bus stop, the lady chased after me to ask if I was taking the bus or walking to Yunomine. I said I was taking the bus, and thought nothing of this episode. As I boarded the bus, it started to rain, and it continued to when I got off the bus at Yunomine Onsen. It took me a while to find my bearings, and as I was heading towards the Minshuku, a lady walked up to me and talked to me in Japanese. I politely said to her I did not understand, but she persisted and said 'Teruteya', and it clicked that she was there to give me an umbrella and to show me the way. (I figured she must have rung the Hongu tourist information to ask how I was getting there, and that's why the lady chased after me). I was pleasantly surprised and felt welcome. The lady showed me to the room, which was cosy, and has a TV. The private Onsen bath was just what the doctors ordered after a tough days walking. The whole place was very clean and tidy. The meals were beautifully presented, and very tasty. The lady took great pride in her cooking. The lunch box was the best yet in terms of variety, quality and quantity!

A simple, down-to-earth minshuku
We were mostly left to our own devices at this minshuku. The owner was friendly, but not chatty. She was quite helpful, and gave us plastic bags for our muddy, wet hiking boots when we were leaving. The rooms are a little out-of-date, but comfortable. It's really nice that there's a private onsen, in addition to the public baths close by. The meals were not to our tastes, as we're unfortunately not fond of fish, but they seemed very well-prepared and there was plenty of food!

Great place to relax after walking the Kumano Kodo
We had a nice time in this minshuku. The food was great and the location in the quiet Yunomine town was very relaxing after walking for two days the Kumano Kodo. We really liked the minshuku's bath, perfect for couples, and going through the town in yukata to the public bath's. Was a perfect end of the walking for us, and the owner was very nice! The minshuku is a little bit old but charmy, with great views of the mountains from the rooms.

Review of Minshuku Terteya
The Minshuku is run by a lovely lady but unfortunately we were not overly impressed with our stay. Although the lady (she never told us her name) was very sweet she didn't show us where the toilet/shower/onsen/rooms to eat dinner in were which left us feeling a little like we were in her house but not sure where we were allowed and where we weren't allowed. The rooms were all clean and basic. Dinner and breakfast were very nice but again we felt service was a bit lacking. It would have been nice to be told what it was we were eating, which order to eat things in etc. Overall it was a nice stay just not quite the homestay I was expecting.

Staying here was one of the highlights of our 10 days in Japan. Even though neither my partner nor I speak any Japanese, we had absolutely no trouble. Really cosy Minshuku
I got a really nice room that was facing the mountains, it was a lovely view. The whole place had this nice small Japanese mountain village atmosphere, with a very hospitable host that made the experience so much better. Just what you need after a long walk
The walk from Chikatsuyu to Hongu and then to Yunomine Onsen is quite long and it is great to end up at a nice cosy guesthouse at the end of the day. The host at Teruteya speaks very little English but it doesn't matter, she seems to know exactly what you want and there are no troubles with the stay. Yunomine Onsen is so small that whether you arrive via the forest or the bus it is a quick 50m walk to the guesthouse. The host was very welcoming and accommodated our request to have an early breakfast at 6am because we needed to catch a bus from Yunomine Onsen to Koguchi at 6:55 the next morning. First thing first: the baths are *really* hot. They are private in the sense that it's one of the only places on the walk where you can sit in a smaller onsen with your walking partner(s) rather than larger bathing houses. They are fairly basic but the heat is all you need really after the walk. The rooms are typical for Japanese guesthouses and traditionally furnished. A very welcome and lovely addition is a kotatsu which on a cold evening is really nice to drink tea and relax around. Both dinner and breakfast are traditional Japanese cuisine served in multiple courses (like a cut-down kaiseki dinner). The food is simple and delicious, with things like pork hotpots, dried fish, pickled vegetables and so on. Breakfast is similar, and the packed lunches are very generous with, I think, 3 onigiri of different kinds plus several pieces of omelette and some other tasty additions. You really need quite a lot of energy food the next day if you walk from Koguchi to Nachi! All in all it was a lovely place to stay and would stay there again if swinging by the area on another hike!

Charming Minshuku
Meals are a delight. This minshuku and others at this Onsen refuse to allow guests to stay more than two nights. This is a gross imposition to travelers, and generates much ill will. Supposedly they do not offer more than two different dinners and would view it as a disservice to offer guests the same meal twice. This is no excuse; foreign travelers would not be able to recognize a repeat meal, especially when Japanese cuisine offers such a variety of dishes. It is positively barbaric to require guests to move after two nights, and this policy should be completely and immediately terminated.

Great Location in Yunomine
Situated away from the main road, this minshuku was located at a good rest point along the Kumano Kodo. The owner was kind and welcoming, and the room was neat and tidy and the perfect size for one. I was given tea and a sweet upon arrival. Dinner and breakfast were served communally, which was nice as I could talk to the other guests staying there. The owner also hand-makes small owl charms with tiny bells which are hung all around the minshuku. They were available for purchase, and I brought one to accompany me on the next part of my hike.

A friendly, warm experience.
We were greeted very warmly and enjoyed really good, wholesome food. The bath is a little tiresome, but the onsen water more than makes up for it! A very pleasing experience all in all - would recommend to anyone.

Very good memory of the GuestHouse
We had a very good memory of our 2 nights in Minshuku Teuteya for the reception (a very good attention), the meals and the quiet location of the minshuku DOMO ARIGATO GONSAIMASU

Minshuku Teruteya
The furo in Minshuku Teruteya needs to be improved. The roof in both the shower (O-furo) rooms in the Minshuku was leaking badly and needs to be repaired immediately. The owner-lady in Minshuku Teruteya was very kind and friendly. I would like to stay at this Minshuku again

mishuku teruteya
it was a great accommodation, and it was so easy. check-in, prepaid with credit card---it was so simple and straightforward that a child could do this. the minshuku has its own onset which was very special. the bento for lunch the next day was awesome. this made a wonderful memory for me and my 19 yr old nephew. i hope to return someday.

Dinner for the second night was much better than the first. The minshuku owner was very helpful. The room had a great view of the mountains and was comfortable for both of us. Except for the first night's dinner, everything else was alright.
