Description
Onsen Minshuku
Minshuku Yunotaniso is located at the upper end of the small hot spring village, Yunomine Onsen. There are both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths in the minshuku. The high content of minerals in the water makes small white deposits called "Yu-no-hana" or "hot spring flowers". It is a sign of a very good quality, pure hot spring. The waters of Yunomine are famous for its healing affects.
The owners enjoy preparing delicious handmade Japanese meals for guests. Meals are prepared with local ingredients and cooked in hot spring water (including morning coffee).
Please relax and enjoy our peaceful accommodations.
◆Minshuku Yunotaniso can only accept reservations 3 months or less in advance.
◆Sorry, one night only per visit. No consecutive nights stay available.

Really friendly people running the accommodation. We had some conversation also with some other guests who were staying at the same time. Food was really good. It never seemed to end. New dishes kept coming out for us. Delicious. We really enjoyed our time in Yunomine Onsen. Even boiled some eggs.

Staff was very accommodating and helpful. We arrived after our scheduled check-in/dinner time and the staff was still able to provide us with dinner. The meals were fantastic! The facility and rooms are in need need of a deep clean and the inside bath had mold on the walls.

Dinner and Breakfast is amazing, private onsen
Just a minute away from the centrum and public bath, it is a great place to stay in Yunomine Onsen. Quiet, comfortable. There are 2 private onsen inside, 1 indoor, 1 outdoor. I tried the indoor one. Host lady served our dinner and breakfast politely. There were so many things to eat, it was a huge dinner and breakfast. I am happy for my stay in minshuku Yunotaniso.

Great place to stay in
Loved staying at this minshuku, the food was incredible and so beautifully prepared, the private onsen felt like a luxury. Also the owner was really lovely and very accommodating, and this place had a real & authentic Japanese feel to it. Would love to stay here again and definitely recommend it to others as well!

Amazing Meal Provided
Is a traditional Japanese style tatami room. It's not a brand new room but it's acceptable for me. There is indoor and outdoor onsen but not really big only fit 2-3 person and only 1 shower in the bathroom. The owner couldn't speak other language except Japanese so for foreigner might need to concern about it but she is really friendly and helpful lady. The best thing I really like is the meal provided. This is the best Japanese meal that I had in Japan. The food was so tasty, the portion is small but she serve alot of food. Even the breakfast was so so good. For those who really love Japanese culture please stay this guest house, for sure you will love it.

The location for us was perfect the last house on the street so we can stroll up -down and enjoy the small stream. The food was exceptionally good and our host keep bringing out more dishes. Charming and cozy
I'm very lucky my first choice was unavailable and I got booked in here. It feels a bit retro but in the most charming way possible. The facilities are clean and you can hear the river flowing from your room. Breakfast and dinner are delicious and they don't seem to host too many guests so the atmosphere is serene and relaxing. It was perfect after an all day hike and I hope to stay there again. Additionally, this accommodation had the best value for money ratio in comparison with the rest of my stays.

Traditional Japanese housing with private Onsen and the best meal
The owner of the housing was really nice and welcoming. Cooked dinner and breakfast for us. It was one of the best meals I have had during the whole stay in Japan. Excellent meals, the lady who speaks very little English was helpfulll. The upstairs Tatami room was large . Note that most of the ryokans in the village have a strange rull that even though they are not full they will only let you stay one night meaning that you will have to move your luggage to some other Ryoken in the village for subsequent nights. It was explained to me by the American guy working at Kumano travel that this is because they think guests will be disappointed if they give them the same meal two days in a row . Note there is a shop that sells not much and a bar run by an Argentinian guy in the village but not much else in the way of food . It would be good if all the Ryokens in the village got together and had an English web site as they can all be booked direct by phone if you can read and speak Japanese rather than the to and fro oh going via a travel agent and having to wait weeks to see if they have availability.

Very local and amazing onsen meals
Even the host can't speak English, she still try all she can to express her opinions and kindness to the guests. (I can understand a bit Japanese. So the host came to me to help her translating to other guests. She just want to suggest the couples share the male onsen tgt, because tonight there was only one male. She try to do the best for the guests. That's what I mean.) And onsen meal is very delicious and sooooo full. She cooked very well. When you think it should be the last dish, and there was still the next one haha. The host also asked about our plan tomorrow , and reminded us the correct time for bus and good opinions about how to collect the stamp. Even the Ryokan is a bit old, but her services and kindness surpassed it :) Comparing to other Ryokan here, its reasonable price and good services!

The onsen were great as were the location and room. There was an issue one night where after dinner I wanted to go outside to meet a friend at 8pm and the front door was locked, I tried but wasn’t able to contact the host by ringing the bell, so I was unsure how to proceed and was worried about being locked out of the accommodation.

A Cozy Inn
After completing our trek to Hongu, we hiked over the mountain to Yunomine Onsen and spent our last night at Minshuku Yunotaniso. Minshuku Yunotaniso has its own onsen, and it was the best way to recuperate after our few days of hiking. We also were provided a delicious homecooked dinner and breakfast which included a great variety of dishes, all beautifully prepared!

Friendly host and delicious food
Well-located at a quiet area just a few minutes walk from Yunomine Onsen. Room was great (traditional style), although it was still a little cold (but tolerable) despite setting the temperature to the maximum. The host spoke a little English but it was sufficient; I observed that she would make the effort to use a translator app to help the guests. The meals cooked by her were yummy but it wasn’t what I had ordered (I ordered no tofu, pork, raw food, nor beef, but I was given beef and raw food). She was however, open to accommodate requests for an earlier breakfast. Downsides: 1) there was only one shower room (with an Onsen) so if someone was soaking in there for a long time, you would have to wait (not great if you had a very long day of hiking); 2) the shower area was mouldy (not surprising, since it contained a hot Onsen). The premise in general is quite old, but the kindness of the host and the flavorful meals made up for the experience.

Showing its age
This place is a little old and starting to become rundown. The shared sinks and toilet made me feel like I was back at camp. The room was very plain and not very comfortable. The saving grace was that we were the only people there so at least there was good privacy. The hostess was very kind and helpful and we appreciated how she attempted to help us dry our shoes after a long hard day of hiking in the rain. However, having the power go out just as we were trying to enter the onsen was heartbreaking. I’ll give the hostess A for effort, but unfortunately, this was not a favourite part of our trip.

The highlight for this minshuku were the indoor and outdoor onsen. The location was also convenient -- around a 10 minute walk from the bus stop, and even closer to the trail taking you to Hosshinmon-oji. In fact, if you don't mind uphill hiking, I highly recommend hiking to Hosshinmon-oji instead of taking the bus. The room, however, was a bit old and dated. And unfortunately, the wi-fi did not extend to our private room very well. Also, when we arrived, we had trouble finding someone to receive us. We rang the bell in the waiting area, but nobody heard it. We had to call the phone number in order to alert the owner of our arrival, so our tip for future guests is to make sure you have the number saved. Overall, not a bad stay. The onsen, food, and location were good. The premises just feels a little old and less comfortable than the other ryokans we stayed out. But it was still a solid place to spend the night during our brief itinerary.

A very disappointing experience. Our host was not at all welcoming. We felt like we were an inconvenience. The property is in very poor condition. The bathrooms were awful. The meal was nice however there was no explanation of the food. The meal presentation was nice. There was no packed lunch for the next day - which we knew about - but it would have been helpful for the host to explain where we could get supplies for the day. We would not recommend this property, or this village.

Best value
Out of all the places I stayed at along the Kumano, this guesthouse gave me the best bang for my buck. The room is spacious and clean and the facilities are more than enough for all the guests, with multiple toilets and sinks scattered around the sleeping quarters. It has its own nice little private onsen (indoor and outdoor), which is kept clean; however, it is already showing signs of age. The food is the best I had along the route with a lot of variety, and the lady taking care of us is very nice and accommodating (she gladly refilled my water bottle). A yukata is also provided. Would recommend.

The room was large and spacious. We had shared toilet, sinks and showers. The onsen is quite antiquated, but has both indoor and outdoor options (split by gender). The food was delicious!

Great Experience!
I likes staying there. I would just recommend a little more protein in the morning meal. They days are long, it would be helpful to have more energy food. The food was good though, and lots of variety.

A quiet inn for relaxing in the onsen bath and lovely meals
We stayed at the Yunotaniso at the end of may 2024. We've been welcomed with warmth and true kindness. The inn is well-kept and clean, rooms are spacious and confortable. The meals are well cooked, well presented and tasty. It was a very lovely stay.

Perfect traditional guest house and wonderful meals
The Yunotaniso is a traditoonal guesthouse with a onsen bath at your disposal. The land lady prepares great meals (dinner and breakfast in our case) that you can eat in the dining room. The building is not new, but is clean and it's the most authentic place we stayed in our Japan trip

The house is close to town and has very nice big rooms. The food was delicious, and the friendly woman running the accommodation told us she cooked some things in the public onsen cooking spot down the road which was cool. The onsen was a little small and the outdoor one wasn't very hot, though this didn't matter too much with Tsuboyu onsen close by.

A welcome break from the rain and snow!
We were very happy to get into our room after a long day of walking in the snow and hail. This accommodation was fairly basic, but clean, cosy and absolutely fine for an evening mid-walk. Limited interaction with host given our language barriers. Would probably push on and stay in the Hongu township if I did this walk again.

Wonderful Yunotaniso
This minshuku was very conveninent to the bus stop and the shops. Everything was perfect. The on-site onsen was refreshing. The food, both dinner and breakfast were Japanese style and delicious. There was plenty of food for one person.

Great food and loved the onsen!
My first onsen during the hike and by that time, I needed it. Also great full meals and met some other guests who were very kind. Make sure you get a non-smoking room though, if you are sensitive. I had a smoking room and the sulphuric smell was apparent. It didn't really bother me, but it might others. Otherwise, lovely place. Wish I had stayed an extra night to recover lol.

Great onsen experience
After pushing the length of my walk this day it was a fantastic location to relax and recover. Yunomine Onsen is a very nice town to stay in and I highly recommend. Food here felt more traditional and makes you feel like you are one of the nobles taking the pilgrimage 1000 years ago. Unfortunately in winter the outside bath was a bit cold so wasn't able to compete with Tsuboyu for comfort.

Difficult at first but it was a lovely surprise. I would like to write a little more about this place. First you can see that some years have passed by this place. It’s a very traditional Japanese inn. So you won’t get your toilet in the room. Not even the lavatory. But refrain from that and it was the most comfortable tatami bed I ever slept. The supper and breakfast were traditional Japanese and delicious. I would very much recommend this place. The Onsen was of high quality water but it was difficult to understand that you could simple add cold water in the tub to make it more comfortable. In the end we were able to communicate with the owner to arranje a luggage shuttle for us last minute and it was 5 stars. Only downside for me is the smell of cigarettes, I am a non smoker and the slightest hint of smoke I can tell. Otherwise , 5 starts.

what a beautiful place to stay
we loved the friendly host who really took care of us. We love both the dinner and the breakfast. The indoor onsen was truly amazing. I had a swollen ankle caused by heavy hiking for days. It wasn't able to heal for the whole week until I soaked in that onsen. it healed me!!! only thing was that the outdoor onsen was pretty cold. But I guess because it was winter. I really wished I could have stayed one more day. I will come back next time with my partner and my young child.

Good Old Days
I recently stayed at Minshuku Yunotaniso and felt like I had stepped back in time. The dinner served was superb and the semi-outdoor onsen was a pleasant experience. I was impressed with the thermal flask provided as it kept water hot from check-in until check-out. However, there was one issue with loud noise occurring late at night which seemed to come from outside the guest rooms.

Host was very kind to let me in even though I arrived much earlier than scheduled. Again, the baths were a lifesaver after a day of walking, although the outdoor bath was slightly slippery.

faded glory.
The friendly elderly lady who received us and served us at the meals seemed to run the whole place by herself. Some ricepaper-shades were torn and the whole place looked as if it has had some better days. Also there were cockroaches in our bedroom; I suppose that's hard to avoid in such a warm and humid place. The wifi did not work and there did not appear to be anyone around who could fix this. The food was beautiful and the outside bath quite nice.

Great place to tay in Yunomine Onsen!
Glad we chose this accomodation in Yunomine Onsen as it is a traditional japanese accomodation yet has all the comfort: no noise in the room, no need to use additional heating even in november (maybe due to ho spring downstairs?), good futons, good bathroom (public japanese style with onsen), super friendly owner who made sure we would catch the right bus for our itinerary (not fluent in english but everyone can communicate with basic words and smiles right?). The food was excellent (dinner and breakfast). At breakfast you can bring your own coffee or buy hot coffee at the vending machine in the lobby. The onsen bath is outdoor and indoor , it is VERY HOT, you have to add cold water before going in. It is very close to everything (boiling egg spot, bus stop, and hiking trail to Hongu, on which you can spot monkeys if you are lucky and quiet).

Great location in the atmospheric onsen village of Yunomine and a fantastic traditional Minshuku stay for my son and me while on the Kumano Kodo. Our host was very welcoming and helpful and the accommodation was all that we needed and The food - dinner, breakfast and oniguri lunch - was amazing. The only minor problem was that the Onsen water was too hot!! But that is not something the host could do anything about.

A big disappointment! Poor place that does not meet expectations.
The lady of the house is not friendly and welcoming: on arrival she didn't even ask for the documents and at check out, after breakfast, she didn't come to say hello, even though she was present at home: we called several times but she didn't come out. The house is very old, shabby and dirty, especially in the common areas. The toilets and sinks are not cleaned daily. We didn't like breakfast and dinner. The only really negative experience in two trips to Japan a month each time! We tried to contact Kumano Travel, but we would have lost 50% to cancel the second day of stay to change location, and it wouldn't have been cheap at all! Bad value for money. Not recommended.

A well deserved bath!
Starting off an a trek is always an interesting experience. You never know how challenging the trail will be. Starting from Takijiri-Oji, I trekked to Chikatsyu-Oji (about 18km) and then bused to Yunomine Onsen. That first day was tough! But arriving in Yunomine Onsen, I immediately began to relax because I knew I had my own bath waiting for me. When I checked into the Minshuku, I was surprised to learn I was the only guest, which meant I had both the indoor and outdoor baths all to myself! As the ultimate reward, the dinner was amazing!!

This is the right place to experience the incredible atmosphere of Yunomine and enjoy a Japanese traditional life style, amazing supper and breakfast included. :) If you come during the winter months, the open-air onsen Sennin-buro might be closed, so I recommend you to inform yourself about other onsen options and how to get there before choosing your accommodation for the night. :)

Points to improve : wifi (not efficient when we came so we had to go to a neighbourg guesthouse) and English communication with the lady in charge (who nevertheless tried her best to understand our needs). A place to recommend.

Great place to stay!
The owner greeted us very warmly. The food was delicious, it was a real plus for my daughter who is not big on fish to be able to eat some beef which was part of the meal. The sashimi was outstanding some of the best I have eaten. The outside onsen was very beautiful. There was no conditioner in the bath which would have been a plus. The futon were very comfortable. Everything was very clean. The air conditioner worked very well until the unit in our room broke. We were promptly transferred into another room and our host was very apologetic. It really was not an issue as there was another open room for us to use. The Air conditioner unit was not old, I just think we had the bad luck of being there on a day it decided to quit. (it was during the big heat wave) Breakfast was very good as well and we would stay there again if we were back in the area.

An excellent choice in Yunamine Onsen
We had no trouble finding our accommodation, and loved the piping hot 'hot spring' bath. The meal was absolutely wonderful. We spent a very very pleasant evening here and then continued on by first taking the bus to begin the next day of our walk.

Yunotaniso was very clean and comfortable and, with a small number of guest at the time of my visit, the onsen was essentially private. The onsen had one indoor and one outdoor bath, both of which were very enjoyable. The proprietor very graciously cleaned and dried a small load of laundry for me while I was out on a hike one day.

Excellent Onsen
I loved staying at the Mishuku Yunotaniso. We arrived very late and even though we did not book a food service, the staff gave us some of their food from their fridge. We should have starved without them, everything was closed! We really enjoyed soaking in the onsen after a long day. My only suggestion would be for the reception desk to open their blinds during the day. We always had to knock and felt like we were disrupting them to ask them questions.

Sulphur City
While we were unlucky to walk through light rain/drizzle for the whole day, we were happy to arrive and catch the bus to Yuminome. The initially powerful smell of sulphur was quickly adjusted to. The outside onsen was delightful and less asphyxiating than the inside bath. Most relaxing. Time for a stroll about town and to recognise the natural aquafers. Another delicious and well presented dinner. We were lucky enough to take some mandarines for the continuation of our walk, Day 4.

We arrived early and I wasn't feeling very well, the owner extremely kindly let us check in early cleaning our room first, so that we could check in at 11am. I forgot some things hanging up to dry and the following night at our next accommodation I found that they had kindly dropped them off. I didn't have a shower so I can't comment and likewise with meals but the room was beautiful Japanese style.

I arrived exhausted having just completed the Kumano Kodo - I was overcome with disappointment to discover that the onsen was not working and requested that I move to alternative accomodation, which was organised by Kumano travel for the following day. Traditional minshuku
House is beautiful, traditional minshuku. We had spacious room, and slept very well listening running water. The indoor bath was very good. There is also rotemburo, which looked so good but I was not able to go there because it was so hot water, unfortunately. Food was also excellent, we had breakfast and dinner. There was a bit lack of information, as we wondered dinner times (with other guests), and my spouse was unable to find his way to rotemburo, as door to there was locked. And the door was locked (curfew) quite early, we tried to go out at 20.30 to have some some evening walk, but door was already closed. At reservation pages curfew is marked to be at 22.00, but it cake much earlier, and there was no information about it. Even some small information on the wall or at the desk would help. Location is nice, with a group of other accommodations and baths in Yunomine.

Loved the outdoor bath!
The outdoor women's bath was absolutely lovely and the food was excellent. The building is a bit old and shabby with peeling wallpaper and a very cramped common area. The guest rooms and dining room are fine - Japanese style with futons and floor cushions. We had a very enjoyable visit since our priority was the baths, the hiking in the area and the food, not the building decor.

As the title says, the traditional food was really good and there was plenty of it. An inn In an onsen town
A bit old fashioned and very traditional minshuku. Stairs are narrow and there is no elevator, so large luggages have to stay downstairs. The lady owner worked very hard to serve us well. The town is very historical and has religious significance, as well, to the Buddhists. I took a bath in Tsuboyu under the bridge. The waters were really first class and pure, both in Tsuboyu and in Minshuku Yunotaniso. No packed lunch, so buy your food before starting the next day's hike.

Very attentive service and good food
When we arrived by bus the owner lady was at the bus stop (we do not know if by chance or on purpose, as she did not know the exact time we would arrive) and lead us to her guest house nearby, where she lives together with her husband. She was very helpful when we needed assistance because of the language barrier in the local shop to send some luggage. The rooms were clean, relatively spacious and had air conditioning. The dinner was delicious, plentiful and freshly prepared and so was breakfast. Toilets are on the same floor as the rooms, while the bath is downstairs. Showers and indoor baths are separated for men and women, while the outdoor bath is shared. But as we were the only family there at the moment we had all to ourselves. The water of the onsen was very hot, so we had to mix it with cold water to be able to have a bath, but that was the case with all onsens in that area in which we stayed (three in total). We have no complaint whatsoever and can only recommend this guest house.

The Kumano Travel website said that vegetarian meals were not available here, but once we had explained to the obliging hostess that we would happily eat everything except meat, she provided a really delicious breakfast that was as much a feast for the eye as the hungry inner man. This was a excellent minshuku. Very well placed for walking, with an inside and small courtyard onsen. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The room larger than expected with good natural light. Unfortunately my partner became seriously ill and it was recommended by her UK GP that she seek urgent medical treatment, so we had to curtail our visit and return to Tokyo. Neither of us have any Japanese and our host had no English. Despite this we communicated and she went out of her way to help us in all ways possible. We hope to return soon, complete the walk and enjoy this beautiful part of Japan.

Let down
I was a little let down to stay here after other charming guesthouses along the Kumano Kodo. The woman running the place was not entirely welcoming or kind and did not seem interested in helping her guests. The room was okay, a bit run down. Enjoyed my stay
Meals were great, and location convenient. The two baths are really nice, but they are extremely hot - I tried mixing in cold water as the sign instructs, but it was still pretty hot for me. Others have noted somewhat abrupt service. I think the owner is actually pretty nice when it comes down to it, she is just busy running the guesthouse while also preparing meals, and isn't meeting people who don't speak your language part of the experience?

Great spot in the heart of yunomine
This minshuku was in a great location, however I didn't order any meals due to dietary needs and when I arrived I was unable to request anything for dinner or breakfast, I was really just hoping I could pay for a bowl of rice or something simple as there are no shops nearby for food but unfortunately I couldn't get anything without booking in advance. The indoor and outdoor bath is great, be sure to use the cold hose to get the water to a manageable temperature. Food was great, beef and vegetables cooked on your own private stove, and side dishes. I loved my stay at Yunotaniso. Its a simple but very clean and traditional Minshuku. Just a few meters away from the trailheads and the public Onsen, the location is ideal. the owners were very friendly and warm. They went out of their way to ensure I had a pleasant stay. As I had to begin my walk very early the next morning, they organized everything to ensure that I could get my lunch box for the trail. One of the owners (the lady) waited for me at the bus stop with my lunch box. The dinner was the nicest I had during my walk through the Kumano Kodo. Staying there gave me a real sense of Japanese Hospitality, tradition and a glimpse of life in a small and remote village.

Cute local minshuku
I had my own room which was really nice. It smelled like leftover cigarette smoke which was not pleasent at all. You have to pay for TV and a/c usage, whuch wasn't great. It was warm enough without it and I wasn't interested in the TV. The host was so kind and the food set up was beautiful and delicious!

Nothing like an onsen bath and a good meal after a hike!
This minshuku was very comfortable and conveniently located in Yunomine Onsen area. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious and nutritious. The most outstanding part of my stay at this Minshuku was the incredible in-hostel onsen bath, which is fed from the natural hot spring that Yunomine Onsen town is built around. This Minshuku may be difficult to stay in for English-speakers who don't speak much Japanese. My host, Mrs Kikuchi-san, was very friendly and understanding of my very poor Japanese (with terrible accent).

great minshuku but on the larger side. Our room was fantastic (we had the room with the ensuite toilet). Hospitality was lacking. We only interacted with one person who was not particularly welcoming or helpful. If the place more energetic and enthusiastic staff and served food that was better than mediocre we would have loved it.

Delicious food and proximity to the Tsuboyu Onsen
The meals served in this minshuku was the best in our 5-day hiking trip. There were 2 areas which may need some attention. First, the shower area next to the outdoor onsen was a bit simplistic and some dust was found at the sliding door guiding rail. Second, the wall paper should better be replaced or refurbished to make the guesthouse look newer.

While the other minshuku feels like a warm bath, this is a place where you can feel it is just for the money. beds are not made up. nothing is explaned, just find out yourself. Heating is on a pay basis,if you ask for something they will help you, but on just a business relation.

Good food at comfortable onset
This place had great food, prepared on time. Rooms were comfortable and clean but general decor could do with an update - there were some stains on walls. The baths were so scalding hot we had to spend quite a lot of time adding cold water before we got in, which was a bit of a nuisance. Although the host was always available, we had to knock on the door to find her which was a little unwelcoming.

Service could have been better
We walked along the Kumanokodo to the hotel in heavy rain. When we arrived we couldn't wash or dry our clothes. But the owner was ver y helpful with any questions we had and even sent our language to Kyoto. It is a pity that we haven't had more time in this town and that it was raining so badly.

Disapointment and sadness
the overall feeling regarding this minshuku has been disapointing. The rooms are sad, very small, ugly, and you hear every thing from the neighbouring rooms. You have only one shower for the entire building. The manager is polite but not friendly at all. There is no flexibility on meals timings: 6.30 p.m for dinner is compulsory. Only the meals are good, but without coffee for breakfast. The futons and pillows are horrible (compared to other japanese bedding in other hotels). No towels are provided. This minshuku is expensive, considering the poor service.

A great onset
Unomine is one of the three renowned hot springs on the area, and the Minshuku offers two onsens to its guests, one indoor and one outdoor (for seasoned practitioners only!). But the rooms are without charm and the place itself is not specially interesting and pales in comparison to the other Kumano Kodo stages.

Appreciated delicious dinner, but small room and bath too hot to use
We were disappointed by our curt welcome when we arrived, though we did arrive on the earlier side, by mid-afternoon. The room was comfortable, but small, and unfortunately the onsen water was too hot, even after several minutes of running cold water into it. We ended us using the World Heritage Site onsen in town. Dinner was great, and the location was remote, but easy to walk to from town.

Scalding hot onsen, but the outdoor onsen was charming. Decent meals, but when I arrived, the owner was not there, and me and other guests were not sure what to do/how to get to rooms and waited awhile till she returned. Am very surprised the TV was coin operated!!! I assumed this is a normal convenience in a room, included in the price.

Miserly, smoky, but the baths make up for it
Minshuku Yunotaniso smelt of stale smoke, like it had robbed the mountains of all their fresh air. While dinner was tasty, the breakfast was just only average. It seems that everything is being rationed here - the coin-operated air conditioning, coin-operated television, and there was only one shower in the mens' bath despite there being space for at least two showerheads. Service was inattentive and one has to ask for things. The natural onsen bath makes up for quite a lot of this though. Minshuku Yunotaniso is also just 1-2 minutes away from the Yunomine Onsen bus stop.

This is the least enjoyable "stay". The room is old and smelly (smoke smell), located on the 2nd floor so I have to carry the heavy luggage on my own to the 2nd floor. The owners are more interested to catch up with their nap rather than welcoming guests. No wi fi facilities. Did not even bother to stay, I just repacked my luggage and continue on to catch the next train to Kyoto.

But soon we found out Yunomine Onsen is not that far away and would be a great opportunity to try a hot spring bath and the Onsen boyled eggs. The booking process via kumano travel worked well. We loved this Minshuku
We stayed in Minshuku Yunotaniso for two nights in May 2013. The location suited well our taste: small and quiet village, the only few visitors we met are all Japanese hiking pilgrims, staying one night on their way on the Kumano Kodo trail. The Minshuku was spotless. Home-made meals were excellent and abundant. Rooms were simple but comfortable. Baths were lovely and soothing, especially after a day of hiking. The owners are very friendly and helpful: when we learned that there would be no food shops on the trail of our day-hike, she immediately made some rice balls for us. We wished we could stay there for a few more days!

Friendly guesthouse
My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Minshuku Yunotaniso. The room was simple but comfortable. While there was no toilet in the room, there was one across the hall and another a couple of metres down the hall. The entire guesthouse was spotlessly clean. The food was traditional Japanese, very fresh and plentiful! We really enjoyed the baths - one indoor and one outdoor for each gender. They were very very hot and we had to add some cold water (from the provided hose); they were perfect after a day of walking the Kumano Kodo. Even though we don't speak any Japanese and the owner spoke very little English, she was very friendly and very helpful. She thought that we didn't know about a bus going to another town (that we were walking to), and even rang the local tourism agency so that they could inform us (in English) about the bus. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and I would definitely recommend Minshuku Yunotaniso to other travellers.

Minshuku Yunotaniso
We would like to thank the owners of Minshuku Yunotaniso for their hospitality. The room and bath are homely, clean and comfortable. The meals were scrumptious and prepared with great effort. We had a very relaxing time at Yunomine Onsen and Minshuku Yunotaniso. The people we met are friendly, helpful and polite. We also like to thank the bus drivers for their helpfulness. We certainly wish to come again! Arigato-gozaimez! (^v^)

Onsen village, flash flood passing through. Warm and safe inside.
Bad weather and wildly swollen muddy streams through the day of visit, so I couldn't take advantage of rotemburo, so my onsen experience was thwarted, but that's life. Went to nearby Wataze for great public onsen. Pleasant place to stay, enjoyed meals and quiet time.

About as expected
The owners were nice enough to pick me up and drop me off at the bus stop. The food was good, but not spectacular. The spa was very nice, but a bit too hot for me. I was a little disappointed I would have to pay extra to use the TV and heater in my room.

Yunotaniso
Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Minshuku Yunotaniso. We thought that the quality of accommodations were very good and comfortable. Having to put yen into the TV box and heating system was a bit of a challenge, but we were able to work it out. In the end, we didn't have to pay for the heating, as the manager of the place took care of it for us. Although the food was probably very good from a Japanese person's POV, we found it to be a little strong tasting for us. We wished that we would have communicated to the manager that we didn't desire all of the fish. We learned something here. As I mentioned, I think that the food would be great if you are into a heavy fish diet.
