Cozy Coastal Iseji Inn

This cozy guest house is a renovated 150-year-old former kimono store in rural Owase not far from the Kumano Kodo Iseji route. Guests can enjoy the mix of old and new wooded scents and, not far away, hear the waves of the Pacific Ocean lapping on the shore. Ms. Hirayama, one of the owners, has studied abroad in the United States, speaks English well, and is a marine sports instructor. The house has a comfortable, relaxing, community atmosphere and is a great place to refresh. Only one group is booked to stay a day.
Meals are bento boxes delivered from "Bento no Mise Shiohama" operated by her husband’s family.

For more information about marine sports activities with the owners:
■ Notes ■
Even if only one group is booked to stay per day, please note that the outdoor shower and common space are shared with marine sports participants.

This inn is an "agriculture, forestry and fishery experience guest house," so all plans come with a story about the Kumano Kodo from the owner at check-in.

Nagara Guest House

Izumi and Hiro made our stay at Niagara Guest House memorable! Izumi went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and able to use public transportation easily. Her breakfast of homemade bread, fruit, yogurt, homegrown tea and honey was fantastic. Her sister in law prepared amazing bento boxes for dinner. Izumi took us kayaking around the Mikisato cove. Hiro treated us to a taiko drum practice with his taiko group. Nagara Guest House was a highlight of our Kumano Kodo Iseji trip. Thank you so much!!!

Highly recommended stop on the Iseji

Staying at Nagara Guest House was amazing, and we can highly recommend it to anyone walking the Iseji Path. Our host, Izumi, was incredibly accommodating and friendly, and the vegetarian dinner was exactly what we needed after a long hike.

Lovely stay

We were very happy with our time here. The three of us had the house to ourselves, it was beautiful. We arrived before check in but a neighbor saw us outside and called the host who arrived right away to help us. Be aware that the village is very small and may not have any options for food during lunch, we were able to get a bento box at a small store just before they closed for the afternoon.

My favorite place to stay in Iseji on the Kumano Kodo.

Today marks the 6th day of my 170-kilometer journey along the Iseji route from Taiwan. I made a reservation for accommodation through Kumano's official website. This was an incredibly comfortable vacation villa. The kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, as well as the facilities for doing laundry and drying clothes, were all very convenient. The living room offered a variety of tea combinations to try, among which the Kumano sweet tea, which is not available in Taiwan, was so delicious that I couldn’t stop drinking it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to buy some Kumano sweet tea in Japan to bring back to Taiwan. Thank you, Ms. Izumi, for specially checking on us that evening. We had such a great time chatting with you in a mix of English and Japanese. I also deeply appreciate the breakfast you prepared for us the next morning and seeing us off as we departed. I hope everything is going well for you. We successfully completed our journey and returned to Taiwan safely. I hope to improve my Japanese after coming back, so the next time I visit, I can have even better conversations with you.

Fabulous accomodation in old restored Ryokan

Nagana is one of our favourite places out of all our Japan accommodation. Quiet, comfortable, everything you need. Close to beach and public transport. Ezumi was just like family. Ensuring we were well fed and had everything we needed (so much good food!). We booked her kayaking day tour and the Gods ensured that the weather was perfect, a gentle kayak around the bays where we had lunch at a beach shack. Make sure you use the "Ocean view" bathroom. Do not miss this place!

Wonderful stay at Nagara guesthouse

Our stay at Nagara guesthouse was wonderful! The host was very welcoming and helpful regarding meals and activities! Thank you very much! We had the whole guesthouse to ourselves. The guesthouse is very close to the beach and the Iseshi route passes right by the guesthouse. The wooden traditional interior was very comfortable and created a nice atmosphere! The bathroom and shower are very modern and the kitchen is well equipped.

Such a wonderful place!

This place was wonderful. If I'm honest we weren't the best guests (our plans changed and we got in much later than expected, and then left very early in the morning). Izumi was so incredibly kind and understanding, she made sure we got in safe and sound, ensured we had a wonderful dinner and that we had something to eat before our crazy early departure. I wish we had spent more time with her, if we are able to get back I'd love to go sea kayaking with her. Do check out her outfitting company E-gummi!!

Izumiさん was so amazing and courteous, I wish we had stayed longer!!! The guesthouse is INSANELY comfortable, super cute, and right by the beach! We were super tired after hiking into Mikisato over Mt. Yakiyama but she and her guesthouse were warm, welcoming, and JUST what we needed after a long lonely day of hiking :) I hope to go back and stay there again someday!
