 Description

Rental House by the "RIVER"

NULLM KAWA Rental House is a renovated Japanese-style rental house in Nakahechi about a 15-minute drive of the Takahara settlement. KAWA means "River" and it is the sister lodging to the nearby NULLM KAZE or "Wind" and NULLM SORA or "Sky." It is a well-furnished one-story house in the Kii mountains with two bedrooms fitted with sleeping futons. The owners would like guests, whether family or Kumano Kodo hikers, to relax and enjoy the setting.

This is a private house rental for only one group per night.

Perfect self contained house

We loved staying at this rental house. The service and pick up from Takahara was perfect, driver arrived 15 minutes after we called. We then stopped at a supermarket and picked up dinner. The house had everything we needed- a great kitchen with oils, seasonings, coffee etc and some toiletries in the bathroom. The house was comfortable and clean and we had a great time there It’s a great stop off after first day of the Kumano. Even though first day of walking is only 2 hours or so from Takijiri you will be thankful of an easier first day on the Kumano!

Amazing Hospitality

My host waited patiently for my late arrival around 6:30 PM after I had started hiking at 4 PM. He even drove me to the supermarket so I could get dinner and dropped me off at the trailhead the next morning. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. Truly appreciated the kindness and thoughtful gestures — it made all the difference.

Great guest house

Stayed our first night at the guest house - was super clean and comfortable. Owner collected us at the viewpoint (and dropped us off in the morning). And stopped at a super market on the way - super helpful. highly recommend a great start to our trek

decent guest house

Solo female traveller, stayed in mid-May 2025. This is not the typical Kumano homestay experience but I still had a comfortable stay. NULLM owns several guesthouses in the area and this is one of their newer ones. Owner/driver does not communicate via whatsapp, rather Kumano travel provides you with telephone number and you call the driver using payphone in Takahara rest area (10 yen/minute, be sure to bring some change) - he will pick up within a few rings. Driver will take you to grocery store (that is pretty well-equipped) to buy dinner and breakfast, before dropping you off at guesthouse. Guesthouse itself was clean and comfortable, large shower. Kitchen was fully equipped with cutlery/dishes /microwave/even rice cooker. It is located right at a road intersection which was somewhat of a downside however I didn't find there were too many cars in the evening. I didn't end up buying lunch as I ate lunch at Michi-no-Eki rest stop (about 3h hike from Takahara) the next day. Mattress pad was thin but I doubled up on mattress pads and had a comfortable sleep. Driver will drop you off at Takahara next day to continue hike. Overall clean and comfortable stay and would have been fun/better priced if staying with a group of people, as long as you are okay with this not being typical homestay experience.

Had a good stay here!

This place is literally a house about a 15 minute drive from the Takahara view point. The house is newer, and everything is nice. There is a deep tub there for a bath after your hike, though it's no "bathhouse" or "onsen". It's right on a road (not particularly busy), but it backs onto a river and the sounds and views from the kitchen are stunning. We slept on futons on the floor...pretty standard in most of these places. We got a ride to the supermarket; the driver offered to take us to his cafe but it was 330 pm and we needed to get stuff for dinner, lunch, breakfast. The kitchen has most of what it needs but it's definitely a little bare. No TV or anything like that...once you're here, you're probably just sitting in the house and reading a book, looking at your phone etc...overall though, it was a nice stay and would recommend if there aren't closer accoms.
