The guesthouse is perfectly placed along the road. It's run by a sweet couple that were very friendly and accommodating, providing both good food and good conversation. You share the house with them but we felt we were able to retreat to our room for privacy and go out and have a nice chat as we wanted. The accommodation itself was very clean and tidy.

A very unforgettable night

The host was super kind and warm. All the facilities in the house were done by themselves so please be patient and respectful when using them. We shared the guest room with the host though the privacy is a bit concern. Really like the seasonal dinner menu especially the soup and desert. The time we spent with the host was really nice and unforgettable.

Please don’t book here

My friend and I arrived after walking 17km to the hosts fighting between themselves. We were greeted by the male host as though our very presence was an offence. Once we were eventually let inside we were berated by the male host on our incorrect shoe etiquette, this set the tone for the stay. The hosts slept in the adjoining room with a flimsy door to separate us and them, very little privacy. We were advised there is a house cat who was calling out and scratching on the dividing door and directed to not open the door under any circumstances. My friend accidentally opened this door and the male host flew into a rage. We are two female hikers and we felt intimidated. Our stay resembled a survive or die strategy, we were completely at the mercy of these hosts for shelter and food. I am still traumatised by this experience. There were some odd behaviours like turning the heating on full blast while the doors and windows were open. I was also personally pressured to hand over my personal contact details, along with details of my profession. This stay has marked our trip to Japan in a devastating way. Lastly the male host charged us exorbitant tax on our drinks which we purchased the night before and washing was offered but with a charge. Be warned.

Old Trail Guest House is the perfect place for those wanting to go a little past Chikatsuya.

We arrived a little early at the Old Trail Guest House after a decently long second day, the Guest House is literally right on the trail which is nice when you want to get right back to it the following morning. Since we were early, the room was still being prepared, so we hung out in the front area which had chairs and umbrellas for relaxing in. I decided to stay in Tsugizakura because I wanted to shave a few kms off of my third day by adding them to the second. Denis and Miyumi were delightful hosts and we had a great dinner, great conversation, and some home made jam. Dinner was seasoned with herbs from the garden, everything was fresh and delicious. The Guest House is traditional - boots left at the front, slippers (provided) in the house, beds on the floor. The stay was quiet, the beds were comfortable, and the morning's coffee was helpful to get the motor running. And when we were off, the first Oji and stamp of the day is just up the street.

After thoughts

We loved the fact that you could just walk from the trail right to this little guest house. There was three of us and it was a very tight squeeze into the room which probably should have only slept 2. The owners were very friendly and the home was spotlessly clean with a small shower room. The meals were European, and although extremely delicious were a little small for our hungry appetite's after walking all day.

Tense, Controlling Atmosphere - Not Recommended

Our stay at The Old Trail Guesthouse was distressing from the outset. After a long day of walking, we were met with an indifferent reception, immediate tension and the feeling that we had somehow done something wrong. We were then subjected to an extended, minutely detailed talk on how things were to be done in the house. Soon after the house introduction, our host enquired about our beverage preference for breakfast. A simple request for milk with our Americano coffee turned into a confrontation. The host reacted aggressively, accused us of not listening, and berated us over “protocol.” When we reminded him we were paying guests, he escalated further, made personal remarks to my partner, and threatened to evict us. To avoid further conflict, we kept to our room and minimized interaction. While the house was clean and meals well-prepared, the shared facilities and proximity to the hosts felt stifling under such tension. The male host’s domineering behavior left us feeling psychologically unsafe. We were relieved to leave and shaken by the experience. Another reviewer on June 2025 seems to have had a similar experience. This is the worst experience we have had at a guesthouse in our years of travelling and it was the real low-point of our month-long stay in Japan.

Lovely couple and wonderful meals!

You can't imagine the feeling when we got a hot cafe after a 17km hiking in the rain!!! Yes, it is a very warm place and easy to be found! The owner, a very lovely French & Japanese couple, gave us a detailed introduction for how to use everything in the house. And I have to say, the meal was extremely tasty, especially pumpkin dish (sorry I don't know the name ) ^_^. See you next time when we go back to Kumanokodo!

The place is nice and rather elegant, but also a little intimate. It has just one guest room, which shares a wall with the owners’s bedroom. The guest room has no furniture except the sleeping mats, and there is no place to lounge except the bedroom, and as it’s on the trail there is no place to go in the evening. Bathroom facilities are good, but get to them you have to wear three different shoes/slippers, One in the bedroom, one in the dining area, one in the bath area. The owners are friendly but very strict about their rules. Breakfast was excellent, dinner pretty good, lunch fine.

Disappointing stay

We found this guesthouse to be a really negative experience - the only positive is the very wonderful Japanese lady who is half of the hosting pair, who was really welcoming and accommodating, and went out of her way to make sure we were looked after (especially following our interactions with her partner). We found the other half of the hosting pair to be exceptionally rude and abrasive, to the extent that one of us ended up in tears. While he is a fantastic chef, there was so much distress caused around meals (we had differing dietary requirements, and initially he only wanted to cater to one of those which was really upsetting - though had this been communicated in advance we could have planned ahead and been sure to have bought enough food in an earlier town) that we struggled to enjoy the food. The guesthouse itself is very small, and you share the bathroom with the hosts, which again would have been fine had we not been accosted every time we left our room with more rudeness and so we ended up just hiding in our room for the duration of our stay, which given the gorgeous location was a real shame. I think had we not had any dietary requirements it probably would have been a more positive experience, so I would recommend that you choose this guesthouse only if you do not need any alterations made to your meals, though still the way he spoke to his partner in general was pretty unpleasant. We felt like we were being blamed for all manner of things, including the cost of ingredients, the communication between the guesthouse and Kumano Travel, the host's busy day, etc - at the end of a big day of walking and before another big day this was just not the way we wanted to end it, and in good conscience I cannot recommend staying here.

Staying with Dennis and Myuri

Super awesome location right on the trail, was great to wake up and start hiking right away. Food was good, western offerings were a nice break on the trail. Dennis’ wife Myuri is an absolute joy! Tatami bedroom was comfortable.

The cottage is right along the hiking route making it really convenient. No need for pickup and drop off. Rooms and toilet were very clean and tidy. Meals were good western style cuisine. This place is run by a retired couple (french husband and Japanese wife) with great personality and sense of humour.

A warm atmosphere and friendly service.

This guesthouse hosted only one group of guests at a time, so we were treated with exceptional hospitality — more like honored guests than customers. The owner prepared the meals while his wife took care of the reception, making us feel right at home. It was truly a wonderful experience. As for the food, the owner is French, so all the meals were Western-style. Everything was delicious, and his cooking skills were impressive. The standout dish for us was the mussels served at dinner — absolutely unforgettable! We highly recommend this guesthouse as a perfect place to rest during the tiring but rewarding Kumano Kodo pilgrimage.
