Description
Traditional Ryokan
Ryokan Adumaya is one of the main traditional inns in Yunomine Onsen, a hot spring village with over 1800 years of history. It was founded by a shrine priest in the 18th century. All of the rooms are classic Japanese style with names such as “sakura” (cherry), “take” (bamboo) and “sugi” (cedar).
The atmospheric inside baths are made of wood with lofty ceilings. The outdoor baths are made of rock, and situated in an elegant Japanese garden setting.
Ryokan Adumaya prides itself on using 100% hot spring water in all of their meals.

Old charm place
This is supposed to be the oldest place in the area and although tired it does have an old time charm. The staff are very welcoming and attentive. The food is excellent and served in the room in a most traditional manner. Only a toilet in the room so you need to go to the onsen to shower which is a good experience in itself

Beautiful Old Ryokan
Adumaya was the perfect place to stay in Yunomine. The location was great, the bath facilities were beautiful, and the meals were spectacular. The room had a beautiful view of the hot springs. It was the perfect place to stay after 3 hard days hiking.

Our stay at the ryokan was truly magical. Although it is a larger property with many rooms, it felt peaceful and intimate during our visit, and the service we received was exceptional from start to finish. The staff were gracious, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome throughout our stay. Having access to a private onsen was an unforgettable experience — with both indoor and outdoor baths, nothing compared to sitting in the warm water under the night sky, watching the snow fall. It was serene and deeply memorable. The meals, beautifully prepared and served in our room, were absolutely wonderful. Every detail of the experience made us feel cared for — even a little like royalty. The hotel itself is elegant and calming, and everything runs with quiet precision and warmth. This was easily a six-star experience for us. We will remember our stay here for a very long time.

Superb
What a beautiful way to begin our trek. The room was stunningly gorgeous overlooking the town of Yunomine. I could have stayed in the baths for hours. The meals were traditional, delicious, and very special. I was also gratefully surprised that tattoos were permitted in the hotel's public bath, but was glad we booked a room with a private onsen (more of a small wooden bathtub fed by hot water from the onsen) just in case. My vegetarian husband's diet was respected and accommodated here.

In-hotel onsen in Yunomine Onsen
The kaiseki meals provided in-room were very satisfying. There was no in-room bath, however there was a good-sized bath with natural hot spring water in the hotel. The futons provided were comfortable. The location was perfect, in the middle of Yunomine Onsen. Staff were gracious and very accomodating.

Lovely traditional ryokan experience!
We had a lovely one night stay here at this traditional ryokan with an unbeatable location, right by the Yunomine bus stop and across from the famous Tsuboyu. Our specific room was clean, spacious and had an attached outdoor onsen bath and garden. The shared facility outdoor onsen was also quite nice. It was rejuvenating to soak in the onsen after a 9-hour hike from Chikatsuyu to Kumano Hongu Taisha! The food was delicious with generous portions and served right in the room.

The best of Japanese Style
Had the most amazing stay here during our Kumano Kodo walk. All of the staff were lovely. We had a Japanese room with living and bedroom area. We were welcomed with tea and the dinner, which was served in our room, was an absolute banquet. Every element was explained by the young man who served us and we felt thoroughly spoilt. Breakfast was also like a fine dining experience. If we had this type of personal dining experience in the UK it would cost us a fortune! From beginning to end, our stay was an absolute treat. Thank you for a memorable stay.

Very nice ryokan at Yunomine onsen area
This ryokan costed more than other places in the area but we found the stay justified the higher price. The location was at the center of the small onsen town and the bus stop was right in front of the ryokan. We had the second floor room where we could see the town from our window and the view was beautiful. The dinner was amazing. It was the multi-course traditional kaiseki dinner. The ryokan had its own onsen, both indoor and outdoor, which was very convenient and super nice after a long day hiking.

An experience unlike anything else.
Ryokan Adumaya was an unforgettable accommodation that isn't one to miss. It's easy to see how it has been in business for decades if not a few centuries. Upon arriving, we were given a brief tour of the facilities and shown to our room. We took advantage of the provided Yukata and made our way to the Private Onsens, which were heavenly after a rainy day of hiking. After spending time in the refreshing waters we made our way back to the room where we were served an incredibly impressive multiple course meal consisting several local delicacies. After dinner, the beds were made for us, and we finished our night. The breakfast was no different, delicious and elaborate. We chose a traditional room, I believe it was the Shitan room (not sure the spelling), the room was quiet and comfortable. Check in and check out was easy. The location is right in the middle of town, across the street from the public bath and cash only restaurant, and almost next door to the bar. Highly recommend making the Ryokan Adumaya a part of your Kumano Kodo hike, perfect location for your first rest day.

Stayed in the Maki room. Fabulous. Well worth the cost - it was a deliberate decision to treat ourselves. Using the cedar wood onsen tub in the room was a life changing moment. I enjoyed it more than I ever thought possible and made me keen to try other onsens that we came across later in our vacation in Japan. We are vegetarians but had agreed for this hike we would eat fish if offered and we found the in-room serving of the meal to be extraordinary. I've never experienced such before and what a place and context to experience a multi-course meal for the first time.

Excellent food and relaxing stay
The food and the onsen are the real highlights here. Food was very beautiful and served in your room. The waiter was an absolute gem and so kind. Also appreciated them providing me with a bento box instead of breakfast on the second morning due to my early departure to start the Kohechi. Only wish they had shown me the newspapers to stuff in my shoes on arrival, not a day later, and that there was a little sitting area with a view of the street when they brought me to my room, instead of leaving that up to me to discover later.

Best place we stayed in Japan
Best place we stayed during our trip to Japan! The staff were very friendly, the food was incredible and copious and the onsens were amazing, especially after (and before) a big day of walking! The Ryokan feels very traditional and old fashioned (in a good way). The rooms were beautiful and we felt very lucky overlooking the main street in Yunomine Onsen. Thank you for having us!

Beautiful room and bath
Our room with private bath was one of the most beautiful we had in Japan. It was spacious with a lovely deck, bathroom, and bath. The location is right in town, which is welcome after the hike into Yunomine Onsen from the Kumano Hongo Taisha Grand Shrine. The staff was very attentive and helpful. A beautiful and delicious dinner and breakfast were served in the room. A great way to relax after a long day of hiking!

Paradise at Ryokan Adumaya
I wanted to experience one traditional Ryokan in my trip to Japan and Ryokan Aduymaya did not disappoint. I had a lovely time at this beautiful hotel. The staff went above and beyond. The dinner was delivered to my room, so much food, it was so delicious and I loved how accommodating they were with being a vegetarian. My view of the town from my room was gorgeous. The onsen at the hotel was perfect and relaxing. I would definitely stay at this Ryokan if I were coming back through Yunomine Onsen.

Amazing Stay with very friendly service
We had a room with it’s own private onsen bath so we did not visit the public baths. The room is fabulous with lots of room - probably a little too big for just myself and my son. The hotel is on the Kumano Kodo trail which is a challenging trail either to or from the Hongu Taisha shrine. Whilst there is a path and clearly signposted - there are parts which are quite steep. The Yunomine Onsen area is a quiet and enchanting town and we would highly recommend this onsen for your overnight visit. The food was varied and kept on coming!! It was so delicious. It was definitely a highlight of our Japan trip.

Beautiful place in a beautiful setting
The hotel is old and full of charm. The staff were super helpful, and the food, incredible! It just kept coming, with three courses meal where the lovely young staff explained about each dish with passion and kindness. The onset on site is beautiful and includes both indoor and outdoor areas with access all night until 9 am. Across the road is the oldest Olsen in the area. The hotel is located in a tinny picturesque town, and along with the smoke from the hot spring, the stay felt like a dream. I had a strong but lovely massage in my room which I pre booked, and the coffee was excellent (though somewhat pricy). A little anecdote I discovered was that my fav author Hanukkah Murakami stayed at the hotel which made my stay that little bit more special. Thank you for having me.

A unique experience
I enjoyed the experience of staying in a ryokan. The service is lovely and you feel very pampered having a multi-course meal served in your room. The room itself was large with a nice sitting area, private toilet and sink. Showers are in the onsen. There is an indoor and outdoor onsen, and individual onsen. It is located in town, opposite the bus stop, which is very convenient. I found the futon and pillow to be the least comfortable of all the places I stayed. Other than that, it was a nice experience, if a little expensive.

Quintessential Onsen village
Reserve early and stay here. We spoke with many other hikers who stated that they tried to stay here but was not available. The tradition speaks for itself. We wanted to experience a high end Ryokan and it did not disappoint. The facility is a bit dated but that added to the charm. The service was top notch and the food was amazing, Kaiseki at it's best. Highly recommend staying here.

Third day on Kumano Kodo
Ryokan Adumaya located right at exit from Kumano Kodo as you arrive. Reception excellent with a tour of the facilities so you know where everything is. Luggage was in our room waiting for our arrival. Really liked the onsen as it was more genuine than the tiled onsens previously. Dinner in our room served by our lovely server with everything explained was great though way too much food but i guess that's the ryokan experience . Same with breakfast. Loved having ou futons laid out for us in the evening after dinner and gathered up in the morning before breakfast. if I had one negative it's the fact that the ryokan experience isolates you from other guests

Lovely stay in historic onsen town
We loved our stay at Ryokan Adumaya. The onsen was very traditional and had both and indoor and outdoor section. It was not busy at all and I had the female section to myself twice. The rooms were traditional tatami style with a internal balcony overlooking the town which was lovely. We were served dinner and breakfast in the room which was delicious. The location was great and right in the centre of Yunomine Onsen and the bus stop is right out the front of the hotel. One local told us that the Emperor's son stayed at the hotel previously!

This ryokan was perfect. Large room, with private onsen. Delicious dinner and breakfast were served in our room. It was a great place to unwind after a long day on the trek.

It would have been appreciated for us and for the ryokan to adapt the morning meal a little for Western travelers who regret wasting food. It is difficult to have large meals of fish, rice and pickled vegetables for breakfast.

Fantastic baths!
Second time staying here, and might stay again. It's a little on the expensive side compared to other options, but the experience is worth it if you can pay for it. The baths are simply beautiful and have a nice smell from the wood used in the building. Meals were served in the room, and were very filling. All staff were nice and friendly.

Amazing place to stay -- Room rate reflects its location
The location can't be beat -- right at the bus stop in the heart of Yunomine Onsen. And the food ... the food was incredible. Three huge courses served in your room. The guestroom was spacious but right near the service kitchen and thus very noisy in the morning.

A wonderful experience
Staying in this ryokan for 2 nights was a huge treat, everything about it was excellent. Dinner and breakfast were like Michelin star food. The onsen bath in our room was fun, the public onsen baths were beautiful, especially the outdoor ones. Service was amazing, staff really took great care of us from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. I didn't want to leave.

We stayed in the Maki room which was huge and we had our own private onsen bath. There were 5 of us in 2 rooms so they even had a private dining area for us. They served a very elaborate, delicious dinner. Great location across from the bus stop and nice sitting area to look out the window from your room.

Amazing food and service, perfect location
I wanted to give my 16 year old son an experience at a traditional Japanese inn, and Ryokan Adumaya did not disappoint. The service was impeccable, and the Japanese kaiseki dinner and traditional breakfast served in our room was one of the best meals of our trip. The location is excellent, right in front of the bus stop. However, the guest room, public bath, and rest of the hotel are showing signs of age and could use a refresh. But this would not prevent me from staying again.

Wonderful onsen experience
We enjoyed the comfortable and lovely ryokan Adumaya. The people were lovely and the lodge itself endearing. The private in-room onsen was disappointingly cramped but the downstairs (public) onsen in the hotel was wonderful and nearly empty. The meal was impressive and served to us in our room by a charming and professional hospitality intern from Indonesia (Chintami) who made our evening complete. Wonderful!

Authentic Luxury at Ryokan Adumaya
Our stay at Ryokan Adumaya was an absolute highlight of the journey—an authentic Japanese experience from start to finish. We stayed in the Maki Deluxe Room, which felt more like a beautiful apartment, complete with its own private onsen and lovely enclosed balcony. Relaxing in the onsen after a day of walking was pure bliss. Sleeping on traditional futons on the tatami mats added to the cultural immersion, and the in-room dining was beyond generous—the courses just kept coming, each one as delicious and artfully presented as the last. It was an experience we’ll never forget!

If our experiences at other places on the trail was an example of “regular” Japanese meals and living, this place was what I imagine nobles on the trail were used to. Fully traditional Japanese rooms, baths and meals allowed us to imagine ourselves as Japanese nobility.

A true window into Japanese culture and the art of relaxation
The rooftops of this Ryokan are the first thing you can see as you approach Yunomine Onsen from the trail from Hongu. You can't have a more convenient location. We especially enjoyed the Ryokan's outdoor baths, which were beautifully situated among peaceful plantings. The Ryokan experience itself (with a room attendant, meals in the room, futons and traditional barley pillows!!!, and access to baths) is unique and precious. I'm not sure I have ever felt more relaxed than at the end of our stay here.

It feels like a taylor made service
It is not common to feel any place as part of you as you guys made it. We experienced some issues while walking because the dual certification takes a little more time, so we lost the last bus to the Ryokan. The night was over us, so walking was not the best decision. You helped us get into the Ryokan, and we were received by a great team, especially Miwa, who was patient and acted like an old friend. That night felt like we had arrived at a best friend's house.

Stay here - you won't regret it
Truly special. Stayed in the Ichii Deluxe Room. Cannot recommend enough. Look for your booking name on the outside of the hotel and you will know you are in the right place. Welcomed after a hot and humid day with a in room Onsen. Our room host, Nozomi was wonderful and is an asset to the Ryokan. She had an awesome sense of humour and was so efficient in looking after us. The food was nothing short of spectacular and there was so much food we couldn't always eat it all. Very accommodating of dietry requirements and a great drinks menu which we made use of! The motel Onsen was great - use the outdoor one as well as they are so relaxing. We stayed 2 nights and were so pleased we had chosen our rest day in Yunomine Onsen.

Wonderful traditional ryokan experience. The staff was so gracious and welcoming. The location in the center of the village was incredibly convenient, giving us easy access to the Tsubo-yu bath and the bus stop. The property was charming. Our room was very large, well-furnished and comfortable, and had a wonderful view over the village center. The food was excellent - prepared and delivered with very great care. The onsite onsen facilities were fantastic. I wish we could have stayed here one extra night to enjoy the baths again!

The place is located at the centre of Yunomine Onsen, right in front of the bus stop. The room was cozy and clean, and we had a delicious dinner and breakfast served in our room. I would pay the same price even if it was just for the meal
At first I thought this was an expensive place, and yes, it kinda is. However, considering not only the beautiful baths (inside, outside, steam bath) but also the exceptional service and the 14 (!) dishes for dinner and the 9 dishes for breakfast, it's worth it five times over. You get to eat dinner and breakfast in your own wonderful tatami room that has a nice view over the yunomine village and lots of green. The dinner is extensive and amazing and even inclused a small glass of the Ryokans own Umeshu. If I could, I'd give 10 starts to the meals and service.

Authentic stay in a great location, with some unfortunate issues
A traditional ryokan with an A+ location and dated interiors. This was the largest hotel we stayed in on the Nakahechi, and we felt it with the lower quality of service. The shared onsen was clean and comfortable; the private onsen left something to be desired compared to Tsubo-yu across the street. Our room was spacious and looked right over Yunomine Onsen, but had dated furniture and the sink was covered with dead bugs. The dinner (served in our room) was an elaborate kaiseki and was lower quality than others on our trek. Breakfast is also traditional kaiseki - we recommend those desiring a western-style breakfast to make other arrangements (for example - there was no coffee served). We got a terrible night’s sleep here, primarily due to the pillows, which were very small and filled with large, hard rice kernels. We’re open minded, but they were truly awful. Our biggest issue was with the gentleman who served us our meals (both dinner and breakfast). He was obviously very sick and was having a hard time hiding it. The poor guy could barely breathe, sneezing and coughing beneath his mask. He should not have been working, let alone serving guests food. Management should not have allowed such a sick employee to interface with guests in that capacity. We left feeling very anxious about getting sick as we set off for the two hardest days of our trek.

A luxurious and restful end to my trek
Ryokan Adumaya is directly across from the bus stop. When I arrived I saw they had a welcome sign out front for me with my name on it. Reception was kind and gracious. I enjoyed walking around Yunomine before settling in for an amazing kaiseki dinner while my futon was laid out for me. I took advantage of the onsen--there is both an indoor and outdoor onsen. They also were understanding of my tattoos so I didn't need to hide them. Also, the onsen are open all night so you can enjoy a star filled soak in the outside bath. It's so quiet here.

A Great Place to Rest after a Rainy Hike
This Ryokan is situated so conveniently in the centre of Yunomine Onsen and at the bus stop. The food for lunch and breakfast was delicious and the service attentive. The onsen at the hotel made it so easy to have this experience. The water was hotter than expected, so that is just something to pay attention to. The room did not have a bathroom and so you are expected to shower at the onsen which is part of the whole experience. They give us nice yukatas to go from room to onsen and back. A special shout out to the individual who dried and cleaned our hiking shoes. We arrived on a rainy day and it was so appreciated that the next day we had shoes that were ready to go. A great place to stay after a rainy hike!

Very relaxing private room in a beautiful location
Being right on the main area of Younomine onsen was so special. The private bath was worth the extra cost, it was nice to have a private space after many days of traveling. The dinner and breakfast were both very good. Service was very good, the server in our room was incredibly nice.

Our room Ichii was super spacious and had nice design and a private onsen bath. The service was excellent. We expected the food to be slightly better as this is supposed to be the highlight of staying here. But overall would recommend to stay here for a true ryokan experience.

Great Place, Just Not for Us
This one is conflicting for us. If you're a person seeking a luxury experience with in-room meal service and that gives feelings of being a cut-above the rest, then this is the place for you. But in our case, that isn't what we enjoy when traveling and seeking new experiences. The public baths are incredible. Don't be deterred by some of the comments here; the baths are old, but the water is quality, the outdoor bath is next-level, and everything about the best of the onsen experience is captured here. Our room was extravagant, and the in-room bath was something we'll never forget. But we would have preferred not to take our meals in our room and make real connections with guests and staff alike. We also found a lack of freshness in some of the vegetables, and I must say the "onsen congee" at breakfast is truly unenjoyable.

We had a very nice stay in the Ryokan. Everybody was very kind and supportive. The dinner and breakfast were great. During our stay we could stay in our room, because the room has its own Onsen. This was very relaxing, after we figured out how to get the hot Onsen water into the tub. :-)

An authentic ryokan for the authentic soul
We blew past our fellow Westerners regretably discussing politics and completely immersed ourselves in the culture and history of the establishment. The aged wood and paper walls have such a striking ambiance. It is an impressive structure that offers a truly unique experience if you are brave enough to embrace it. Stay in the traditional shitan room, wear the yukata and sandals, and bathe and eat like the Japanese. You will not be disappointed.

This was the perfect place to end our Kumano Kodo hike in. The onsen baths are wonderful, especially the outdoors ones. The meals were incredible too, even the vegans in our party got a wonderful meal with many small and delicious dishes. We arrived after a long day to a bus stop 2 miles away from Ryokan Adumaya, only to find out that we have just missed the bus, and the next one is scheduled in 2 hours. We called the ryokan and they were able to arrange one of their staff members to come and pick us up from the station, which we were very appreciative of.

The traditional onsen was an incredible experience. Checking in was seamless. It was very private during our stay and only saw a few other guests. The room was very huge and clean, with a toilet and sink to use. Private despite being a short distance from the main road in Yunomine. We had the kaiseki experience for dinner. Everything was tasty and there was a huge variety of foods to choose from. Our host spoke English and was incredible at describing everything to us.

Really comfortable and relaxing stay after a hard day's hike
One of my favourite Ryokans in my trip so far. Everyone was so friendly and helpful even though I arrived sodden and wet after a 10km hike! The room was very comfortable and spacious. I used the inside onsen which was just heavenly, although it was too cold and pouring with rain to use the outside onsen. The food is served in your room, and was just so wonderful. It featured a number of dishes cooked in onsen water which were really interesting to try, and you could taste the difference. They really look after their guests well, and I highly recommend staying here!

Traditional Ryokan with Onsen and Amazing Food
Ryokan Adumaya is centrally located in the village of Yunomine Onsen and provides beautiful traditional Japanese accommodation and meals. While some parts of the Ryokan look as if they need some paint or repair, it is wonderful to have the onsen facilities with their beautiful outdoor pools easily accessible onsite. The provided robes, coats and futon bedding were all clean and comfortable. We were a group of five and were served our meals in a private dining room. Over the two dinners and two breakfasts we received a wondrous array of small and medium dishes including seafood, meat, vegetables, pickles, rice, eggs and fruit. It was more than we could eat, but it was all delicious and so beautifully presented. A memorable stay.

Very traditional, a unique experience
A very old-school style ryokan, definitely worth an experience, although you have to adjust your expectations a little. The rotenburo is excellent, but all in all the house is quite old. I think there is great worth to being able to spend time in such a truly traditional guesthouse, however at times the "charm of the old" did turn to "this feels a little run-down".

The indoor onsen and the private onsen both have a very old wooden tub, which looks and feels very dirty and should probably be cleaned/replaced. The outdoor onsen for male visitors on the day of our arrival (they switch daily) looked great though and had a stone tub. It is, however, separated from the indoor onsen (no way to walk from indoor to outdoor without going throught the hotel itself) and does not have a place to wash yourself, so it is very impractical to use. The private onsen doesn't have warm water to clean yourself as well. You don't have a shower or bathtub in your room either, so the washing situation overall is not very good. The food was okay, but compared to the other places we stayed during our whole trip to Japan (not only in the Kumano region) below average.

Lovely Ryokan in Yunomine
The historic and spiritual village and hot springs at Yunomine was a highlight for us and Ryokan Adumaya was an exceptional spot to literally bath in the waters. Their private onsen was sublime with both indoor and outdoor options. It is located directly across from the public baths where you can soak in a stone tub in use for 400 years. We were greeted warmly and directed to a lovely and large room that included an en suite toilet. Our Kaiseki meal that night was delicious as was the traditional breakfast the next day. We were served by Nozomi, who was simply wonderful. Ryokan Adumaya is recommended for anyone staying in Yunomine who wants a traditional Ryokan experience.

a very nice japanese inn
Some bits were a bit old around the edges, but for someone new to japan the Adumaya ryokan provides a great japanese ryokan experience. The bath is super after a long hike and the outdoor bath(rotenburo) was great. the food was typical ryokan fare with lots of small and tasty dishes. it was raining pretty hard when we arrived and they had some shoe drying machine to get us ready for the next day. the ryokan sits just off the trail and for us it was easy access to the trail to the shrine for day three. for those less inclined a bus leaves just outside the ryokan to uegawa trailhead at 830 in the morning

I wouldn't recommend the Shitan room, but the ryokan is nice overall
MEALS : The meals were really good and really generous, especially in the morning. Lots of different textures and tastes, we had the vegetarian option and still felt like we were eating very traditional Japanese food, which was great. It was really nice to have the meals served in our room, felt like a really authentic experience. Some dishes were really mysterious to us, but that is part of the fun! ONSENS : It wasn't clear if we could use the onsens with tattoos or not, but since a lot of Japanese people go there we didn't want to risk it. We didn't have any private onsen in our room so we went into the private bath available for guests (you can go in without reservation). It was...not great. Very very old wood, no shower, you wash yourself with a bucket in a very cramped setting. There were mosquitoes. There was a semi-open window where you could see a broom and what seemed to be a staff area, so we felt very vulnerable being naked in there. We ended up not going into the bath and just getting out after washing ourselves. ROOM : The room itself is great. It looks amazing, it's super nice to have a sink with a mirror + a toilet in the room. It's spacious. The futons are comfortable. But...we were in the shitan room, and the futons are put in the first part of the room (the one that is near the door). It was unfortunately impossible to sleep well. There are some paper ''windows'' (shoji) separating the room from a staff area, and we could hear staff and see light from the staff room until past 11pm, and then back at 5am. After 3 days of walking, we were exhausted and it wasn't nice to not be able to sleep well. If you are staying in the Shitan room, I highly recommend you bring a sleep mask and earplugs if you want to have a good night of sleep. SERVICE : Service was great, our hostess didn't speak any English at all but we didn't expect her to, English is not common in rural areas in Japan. She was really nice and we loved her :). Important : Please note that they will be 5-10 min early on everything, at least in our experience. If you said you wanted to eat dinner at 6:30, they will knock on your door at 6:20 with the meal. If you schedule breakfast at 7:30, they will bring it at 7:20, but they have to remove the futons before they can bring the meal, so they will knock on your door (and enter) at 7:10. Just be aware of it so they don't catch you still in bed like they did for us ^^; OVERALL : Overall great experience, felt very traditional and we will keep great memories of it. But if I had to stay there again, I would definitely splurge more to be on the second floor and have a private onsen in the room (especially since we have tattoos). I wouldn't recommend the Shitan room to anyone except sleepers that are not bothered at all by noise and light. I am also not a fan of staff being able to enter your room at any given time with only a brief warning, but I think that's part of the ryokan experience and we just weren't aware of it.

Nice room, but the common areas need work
While I enjoyed my stay here, as the room was clean and nice, the interior of the main building is really run down and in need of some paint and new carpet. The shower and interior baths were also a bit dingy feeling. The outdoor onsen was pretty, but WAY too hot to be able to use, even after running cold water in it. The interior one was usable, but could use some improvements. Meals however were amazing! Lots of dishes and delicious. I'd stayed one night here and one at Fujiya Ryokan in Kawayu Onsen, and much preferred it to this place.

A wonderful experience
The staff was very friendly and accommodating and spoke fairly good English. We really enjoyed our private onsen. The general onsen area was also well equipped, with 2 indoor pools and an outdoor pool. The food was excellent. One of the best meals of our entire trip. An absolutely relaxed afternoon after a nice hike.

A little dated…
We had a very authentic experience here but the place itself was disappointing for the cost - quite antiquated. Food in our room and yakatori robes were great. We opted to go to the women’s public baths in town which were fabulous.

April 2023 Visit
This was my first time to Japan and Ryokan Adumaya & the Yunomine onsen area set the bar for the rest of our trip. Honestly, I loved everything about staying there. I thought the ryokan itself was beautiful and rich in its history. The rooms were very comfortable, and I loved being able to sit on the balcony with tea and just enjoy the view. The food was honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. So much so when we returned to Tokyo to head home, we were actually disappointed we couldn’t find anything nearly as good as what we had at Adumaya. It was the perfect location to relax after our hike on the kumano kodo & I’m eagerly planning our next trip.

The real deal
Adumaya was the most authentic, atmospheric ryokan experience we had on our trip to Kumano Kodo. This was the real deal. The baths were great and our room had a small private hot bath which was fun. The food was extra-ordinary, service was great. Some softer pillows would have been a plus.

Really impressive dinner and breakfast
I always try to pamper myself in every trip with a nice dinner BUT this dinner blew my mind. I really appreciated and enjoyed the attention that they put to the details and the variety of foods for dinner and breakfast. I considered my time there one of the highlights of my walk. That experience gave me a real taste of the japanese culture and its hospitality. I was more than overjoyed and glad that I experienced that.

Traditional Ryokan with Amazing Outdoor Onsen
Although the old concrete building is looking a bit tired in places, this ryokan is right in the centre of the tiny hot-springs village and has it's own onsens (both indoor and outdoor). The outdoor onsen is especially beautiful in the garden setting. The Japanese full-course meal was incredible and there was so much food that we couldn't get through it all. We had an upstairs room with an internal balcony over the street with views up and down the river. The room & ensuite were not huge (but was big enough for two) and the traditional pillow did feel like a large bag of rice, but apparently that's the way it's supposed to be! Being a larger place it was also fairly busy. Traditional robes for the onsen and sleeping in were supplied. Staying here was a slight splurge for us, but worth it to see how things are done in a long-established ryokan.

A very nice Ryokan in a great location
This is a very good Ryokan in an amazing location. As such the service is very good and the room we stayed in was spacious and very comfortable. The in-house onsen is nice, but nothing to write home. Luckily the (famous) public ones are very close. The in-room bath is on the traditional side, i.e. small and tall, so don't expect anything fancy. The food was very good.

Excellent location and fantastic vegetarian meals
This ryokan is not very easy for non-Japanese speakers to find because its name is written only in Japanese. I also overlooked my own name, written vertically and listed at the entrance as one of the guests being welcomed for the night! But its location is actually perfect, with the bus stop right outside, just across the street from the Tsuboyu (the World Heritage ancient onsen bath). Staying at this ryokan makes it very convenient to pop over to the Tsuboyu from time to time to check if it is your turn yet. The private onsen bath in the ryokan itself is great for guests who wish to try this quintessentially Japanese experience in full privacy. It is small and by no means glamorous, but the wooden tub is so adorably quaint. It was not too busy on the day I checked in so I did not have to wait to use the private onsen in the ryokan. This was also the only place for me to take a shower as my room did not have any ensuite shower (although it did have an ensuite toilet). The shared outdoor onsen is very enjoyable in a completely different way! It is amazing to be able to enjoy a hot spring bath while the sea is in full view before you. But another major highlight of my stay was the dinner! My vegetarian feast was served – I think in kaiseki style? – by a lovely attendant who spoke enough English. Breakfast the next morning was equally fabulous.

Excellent service, clean room, very comfortable traditional Ryokan experience!
We wanted to splurge a little on the last day of our Kumano Kodo hike and opted to stay at Ryokan Adumaya in Yunomine Onsen. What a treat this Ryokan is! After 15 miles of hiking from Chikatsuyu all the way to Kumano Hongu Taisha, having our own private onsen on the balcony to wash up and soak away the aches was very relaxing. The meal service in our room was exceptional! Great variety of dishes and drink options paired very well with the food. The pillows were a little hard for our liking, but the staff provided us with cushier pillows upon asking. Thank you!

Ryokan Adumaya
Ryokan Adumaya was everything you would hope for in a traditional ryokan experience in Japan. Arrival, issuance of our onsen kimonos, and food was top notch. After such a long hike all the services were gratefully received. The patience of the staff communicating with an English speaker was so convenient as it was my first time in a real onsen and had no idea how the process worked. Being able to walk along the streets at night was a relaxing end to a hard day. Our staff who supported our room and provided the meal was very friendly, courteous, and great at service. This ryokan is as traditional as it gets. The establishment is a living museum, that is ~300 years old. The rooms are spacious, the food is unbelievable and the staff is very friendly. It’s a bit pricey, but a great experience. In a very cool little village, Yunomine Onsen. Not much for eateries, etc, but the quaintness is unbelievable. They also took and stored our luggage from the transport service on our last day even though we weren't staying there.

An old ryokan in Yunomine Onsen
1. Location This Ryokan is located in the center of Yunomine Onsen, and was just in front of the bus stand. Very easy to find. 2. Cleanness This ryokan is rather beaten up. The toilet room in our room was full of the smell of urine when we first got in. I think traditional and historical doesn't mean old and wore out, and a major renovation should be undergo to improve the quality of the ryokan. 3. Food Provide ordinary onsen cuisine in Japan in room. You'd better do some stretching before having your meal. The food is fine and the staff is polite. 4. Room The room is big enough for us and was well equipped. There was a balcony with the view of the onsen river. There was no hot water for washing hand, and it was freezing in the cold weather.

Ryokan Adumaya: A Lovely "Splurge" on the Kumano Kodo
After a challenging walk up and down the stone steps of the Nakahechi trail, there is no better place to rest your legs and indulge yourself than Ryokan Adumaya. The location is perfect: in front of the bus stop from Hosshinmon or Hongu and a few meters from the famous pool to boil your eggs. Our Japanese-style guestroom featured an enclosed, windowed porch and street view, a sink and typical Japanese toilet, and yukatas. But our favorite two features were the fabulous multi-course dinner served in our own dining room (because we'd requested a Western-height table and chairs) and the onsen. Every afternoon I soaked myself in the wood-lined, mineral-spring fed pool, and all the aches and pains of walking simply melted away. Service is excellent, with English-speaking staff.

We stayed 2 nights at Ryokan Adumaya and had a very nice stay. Very special room...beautifully decorated, great amenities, beautiful en-suite onsen. The meals were wonderful as well...there were 4 of us and we had our own special room and server. On our day off a gentleman from the front desk drove us to Hongu since we had missed the bus! So nice! The community onsen was fantastic, one was inside and one outside. My only complaint would be the common areas look a little tired, like they need updating.

The Best Spot in Town
Yunomine Onsen is a special and almost mystical place and Ryokan Adumaya is a traditional Ryokan offering excellent service and a very roomy bedroom (a suite of three rooms) in the centre of town. It overlooks the UNESCO Heritage springs and is opposite the Bust stop for the journey ahead or arrival. Since the pilgrimage from Tsugizakura is 21 km and even the trek from Hosshinmon is 8km plus a steep climb to Yunomine so after any combination of the pilgrimage you are exhausted and ready to be treated with care. The baths are great. We had a room overlooking the spar and it was entertaining to watch the passing parade of pilgrims and guess they origins and nationalities. A wonderful meal was served in our room by a charming lass, which added to the Japanese delights. We really enjoyed this stay and felt the old world charm provided a lasting memory.

Stunning dinner and very natural baths
Dinner and breakfast at this place are not to be missed! The baths are beautiful, natural, big, with lots of options. It's a pricy place, and very private (we didn't talk to any other guests the whole time since our meals were served in room) so if you want to be more social, recommend somewhere else. But if you want a very relaxing hot spring focused experience - this is a great option!

Hot springs with character and soul
After that last 2KM hike from Hongu I was ready for a good soak in the onsen --such a brutal hike-- and Ryokan Adumaya's did not disappoint. They seem like they're a hundred years old and they're hot and it seems like the minerals permeate the walls. The outdoor pool was also lovely, but the character of the indoor onsen was the real attraction. The room they put me in overlooked the town and it was what you imagine when you think of a Japanese inn. The meals were also delicious and the service was very attentive.

The rooms were incredibly spacious and had that perfect sense of Japanese Zen! Beautiful gardens, stunning location on the river, and the food was yet again wonderful! The aircon never blew cold and we couldn't understand the japanese wrirting to change it, so we were a little bit hot during the night, but otherwise it was really really fantastic.

Yunomine Onsen
A very traditional inn which you can either walk to but best to catch a bus from Hongu us station if you are walking the trail. The rooms are spotless, the Onsen is great and very traditional and the village very interesting. We had evening meal and breakfast both of which were pretty hard core traditional Japanese and we struggled a bit both with quantity and the ‘rustic’ nature of the fare. The service was great and I would stay here again.

Amazing.
Ryokan Adumaya is totally worth it. Our room was lovely and looked out onto the tiny town of Yunomine. It was clean and spacious. Our meals were served to us in our room by the friendliest woman with whom we had great interactions. The food was epic. There are multiple onsens on site (I think 6 or 8), two of which are outside. Some of them are private. We took a rest day here and definitely do not regret it!

Very welcoming, beautiful surroundings & exceptional food
My room was was a lovely traditional style room, with a beautiful private balcony looking onto Yunomine Onsen. The meals were extremely generous and exquisitely delicious - local food prepared to perfection. The outdoor bath was lovely though no shower and separate to the indoor bath, so a bit inconvenient if you want to shower; while the indoor bath was undergoing some maintenance (the sauna in particular).

Great meal and great service but very old and worn down accomodation
Unfortunately we did not like this accommodation at all. The people were friendly and the meals were great. However, the room and the baths were really dirty and old, sauna not working. The room needs renovation, dirty carpet in the hallway, dirty walls, dusty. It needs, good cleaning, painting and new carpet in the hallway (tatami was still good). This stay was the most expensive night but for my wife and I really not worth the money.

The room was brilliant, lots of space. The service great - dinner and breakfast was served in our room, and out futons were made for us. Out host made me a flag for breakfast, because it was my birthday - so sweet! The shared onsen bath was very relaxing, while the one in the room was quite small. Reception was helpful and the meals good - but a lot of food - half of it would have done the trick. Location is just were you come down from the route.

Great service, but outdated hotel
The food, location and meals were great. We had so much food and it was just what we needed after the hike (I would even say that we had too much). My biggest complaint about this hotel was that it was very outdated and there was lots of mold and mildew. Our room worked fine for what we needed, but there were strange stains on the walls, and did not feel clean. In the bathhouse, the shower handles had mold and the sinks and walls did as well. Great service, but the cleanliness of the hotel outshadowed the good at this location.

Ryokan Adumaya was a feast for the senses: the baths were great, and the kaiseki meals were the best on the trip. We were disappointed with this lodging from two perspectives: it is rather shabby and run-down, and the onsens are either too cold, or not well-maintained. Adumaya feels like a traditional guesthouse with age and stories. We ate in a private dinning room and were served by a lovely lady who brought multiple courses. The food was a very high standard and beautifully presented. We loved the shabu-shabu. We didn't quite manage the simmered red snapper head but it was a great photo memory. The real highlight was the incredible baths - stunning. Large dressing rooms and huge bath house and steam room. The setting was unforgettable - I was the only guest in the women's bathhouse and I practiced yoga on the side of the bath and in it! It was almost a spiritual experience.

Words cannot possibly describe how much I enjoyed my stay at Ryokan Adumaya. It was very easy to find (right across the bus stop in Yunomine Onsen) and the staff knew who I was the moment I walked into the Ryokan. My room was lovely - Japanese style and overlooked the main street of Yunomine. My favorite part of the stay, however, was the meals. I had traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast served in my bedroom. The server explained all of the food to me as well as how to eat it, and what a delight! If you enjoy trying new things and and are not afraid to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to cuisine, this is an experience you do not want to miss. Highly recommended!

Lovely ryokan, great location
Adumaya was perfectly located right in the centre of yunomine onsen. No one there spoke much english, but we were able to communicate reasonably well with the staff. We were extremely tired when we got there so the baths were an excellent idea. We then rested for a while before our amazing dinner arrived. I cannot recall how many tastes we had. Perhaps 25. Too much for us to eat, but beautiful. We had a good sleep on slightly bigger mattress and a very tasty breakfast and delicious coffee. While we loved the experience, this was the most expensive accommodation in Japan, possibly because of the perfect location

Old ryokan
We enjoyed staying here and the meal was good. One of us has some food allergies and the meals were presented with this in mind, which was much appreciated. However we felt that the ryokan had seen better days and could do with some maintenance especially in the public bathing areas. Also quite expensive we felt. There might be better accommodation at Yunomine Onsen when considering the price and what you got for it. We have stayed in many ryokan all over Japan and we know what to expect. Not highly recommended.

Gourmet feast
This old, traditional ryokan has atmospheric baths and fantastic gourmet meals, served in your room. For dinner we had 3 courses, each with 3-5 separate dishes. Vegetarians/vegans will not go away hungry, but will not be specifically catered for; fish is part of all meals. Some might think the inn to be past its sell by date, but if you like the charming patina of, say, scruffy Italy, you’ll be at home here.

The rooms are dated and somewhat worn, he food was the best (14 course) informal kaiseki on my Hongu and Nachi Taisha walks. Had a good breakfast including delicious Okayu. The onsen was beautiful - I can only imagine the outdoor one would be even better in the snow. The water is so close to the source that the entire town smells sulfurous and white precipitants show up in the baths.

Nice place to stay
This ryokan is very centrally located with friendly staff. However, it is in serious need of a renovation - everything is old and tired, including the baths. Food was pretty ok, very abundant. The fish was very tasty.

Family of four 2 night stay
Wonderful experience. The baths are amazing, the service and food excellent. The Kumano area was a bit hard to get too, but well worth the detour between Kyoto and Tokyo to see another part of the country. Our North American kids were not too happy with the traditional breakfast and we should have ordered the western breakfast for their second morning, but adults loved it. Very special meals. Highly recommend! Thank you.

Just perfect
Where to start? Incredible food (dinner, breakfast, and the bento lunch box). Great service. Extremely atmospheric and comfortable. The ryokan is quite old, and in places this shows (one cannot say it has recently been renovated) - but we felt this just contributed to the atmosphere. Great location in a very pretty town.

Wonderful meal and real ryokan experience
It was a real authentic ryokan experience. The staff was extremely friendly. The onsen are wonderful (multiple indoor baths and beautiful rotenburo (outdoor bath). In relationship with the expensive price I found the room could really need an update, for example old heating system, wall could use repainting, old furniture,... First disappointment of the room quality was covered with the great level of the meal (13 courses) and the onsen.

Welcoming and comfortable
We were very happy with our stay here, it was a nice treat in the local area. The room was spacious and comfortable, and had its own toilet. The separate seating area was great and we had a lovely view of the main area of the little town, and the amazing wind and rain from the typhoon we sat through. The arrangements for the onsen were good and great to have an outdoor bath. The food was really excellent and all the staff friendly, helpful and welcoming. The location was right by the bus stop so fantastic, and we enjoyed seeing Yunomine Onsen.

Nice, but not worth the money
The onsen were nice and the room was clean and spacious, but despite being the most expensive place we stayed, Ryokan Adumaya was our least favorite. The meals were elaborate but not as tasty as those we had elsewhere. The decor felt outdated and worn. We preferred the communal dining and camaraderie at the minshukus we stayed to the isolated experience of dining privately in our room. Overall, not worth the hefty price tag.

Amazing experience at Ryokan Adumaya
Our experience at Ryokan Adumaya was amazing from beginning to end. Every person who helped us was incredibly kind and helpful. The room was lovely and comfortable. The meals were delicious and presented as edible pieces of art. The onsen was delightful and the waters were warm and healing. Traditional Experience
Whilst showing its age when compared to other ryokans I stayed at in Japan, Ryokan Adumaya is authentic and charming. A highlight for me was the balcony seating area in my room which provided a nice view of the town and a great spot to listen to the sound of the hot springs trickling down through the centre of the village. The dinner and breakfast provided were feasts featuring local produce and unique hot spring water cooking. Service was terrific too. The only faults was the lack of WIFI in rooms (though gave me an opportunity to read and enjoy the peace) and the outside onsen was way too hot for me so I had to resort to using the private baths instead. Otherwise a great stay.

Wonderful ryokan!!
Our family of three stayed here after a 3 day hike on the Kumano Kodo. It offered the perfect luxury accommodation after our hike. The location is terrific once you get to Yunomine Onsen. The reception was very welcoming. We speak some Japanese, but I think it would have been understandable and welcoming for a non-Japanese speaker as well. The food was outstanding! Typical of dinner at a ryokan, the course menu was varied and everything was delicious. The ryokan has small private baths, and indoor and outdoor gendered baths. We loved the onsen at the ryokan, but if you stay here, you should also check out the small onsen across the street that is apparently 1,800 years old. You get a ticket at the kiosk (first come, first served) and then wait for your 30 minute slot. We got a ticket at 6:30 in the morning, and were able to visit the onsen at 11:00 (but we visited during Golden Week, so it was probably busier than normal). We would highly recommend Ryokan Adumaya - it was amazing!!

Yunomine was such a special place
Walking into Yunomine at the end of our second day on the Kumano Kodo was such a lovely experience. Our accommodation was great. The meals were quite varietal, and very picturesque. It did seem a bit expensive in comparison to the others in town, but we were happy with it. We tried out our bath then rented a private one in town for a bit and relaxed our muscles (we hiked 15+ miles that day). Yunomine is a truly charming village. We put out robes on and walked around at night while waiting for our bath, and there were locals cooking in the sulfurous Onsen water, which was pretty unique.

If you want the Japanese experience - This place is totally worth it
The village, the hotel, the people. To me, this is Japan as pure as it gets. That one night in this ryokan is the best souvenir I will keep of my two-week trip to Japan. I must admit that when I walked in I was put off by the fact that the place does look a bit faded, lackluster. But then I settled in and realized that I was in a different setting. I was not in a contemporary international place. I was in a typical, historical ryokan. The onsen was as pure as it gets. Steaming hot water that comes out of the ground vaguely smelling of sulfur. The service was so Japanese. AND THE MEALS! The dinner they serve in your room is Japanese gastronomy at its best. You would have to pay more for a single meal like that in a Tokyo restaurant than you pay here for the room, the dinner and the breakfast, which is also amazing. We laughed and had a great time with the young woman who came into the room to serve the meals and prepare the room for the night. She was precious.

Location was excellent. The hotel is somewhat shabby and tired. It could use a renovation. It is nice when some things are old, but we found everything old and shabby for the price that we paid. The in room dinner was very nice, especially the service. Very elegant and polite. All of the cold dishes were delicious, the hot dishes were overcooked and not as enjoyable. The bedding was comfortable, we slept on tatami. The onsen baths are wooden and nice, I do wish women had an outdoor bath in the evening instead of only in the morning.

Nice place, I recommend use this Ryokan like a relaxing stop between two soft walk days. Arrived around 13h and enjoy of different baths all the time that you want. It is the most expensive place that I have paid in my live but my body gave me thanks for this relaxing time after kumano kodo. The supper was a real banquet, is necesary being hungry to eat it. Is good to think in a traditional japanese luxury to enjoy this.

I spent one night at Iseya and one night at Adumaya Ryokan. Both were great. I felt that the Iseya room was slightly nicer while the Adumaya meals, staff and baths were slightly better; however, Adumaya's price was nearly double that of Iseya. I would highly recommend both of these places, you're just getting a larger more professionally run place with Adumaya.

Not value for money!
We were incredibly disappointed by this expensive ryokan. It had a run down feel about it; walls with paint peeling, dimly lit, our fly screen was ripped in x2 places and our host was not very welcoming. Once we pointed out all the mosquitos in our room, we were given a better room but the host did not come and apologise to us. The staff were generally attentive and the evening meal was excellent and beautifully presented. The fact that we paid twice the price for this place compared to any other place on the Kumona Koda, it definitely was NOT value for money....

Ryokan Adumaya was a wonderful place to stay after two hard days on the Nakahechi route. Yunomine was a beautiful little town--quiet and relaxing. It is located right in the middle, right next to the bus stops. The onsen and facilities at the guesthouse were incredible--particularly the outside onsen! Our room was clean and comfortable, and our host took incredible care and was very punctual in changing over our room for sleep and meals. The meals themselves were beyond amazing--very traditional food and lots of it. I would definitely stay here again.

Mixed experience at Ryokan Adumaya
It's a nice Ryokan just next to the bus stop so it's very convenient. The hotel, the rooms, and the onsen were fine though it's looking old. The supper and breakfast were wonderful, delicious and beautifully presented. The meal service was excellent too. Where Ryokan Adumaya can improve: - there were mosquitoes disturbing us at night and a few of us (in different rooms) were bitten by mosquitoes! - wifi did not work at the lobby and the front desk was not willing to help fix the issue - the ryokan feels old and dusty, with unused stuff stacked around here and there

Trip of a lifetime.
I wanted to escape the stress and noise of NYC. I watched a program on Kumano Kodo on NHK. I found a few sites and was starting to look for ryokans, buses and trains. It was difficult to say the least. My friend who lives in Yokohama sent me the kumano-travel.com site. I was well on my way to plan my trip. Hiroko was especially helpful as she helped me customize my itinerary. I can speak very little Japanese but my itinerary solved most of those problems. I just had to be at train stations and bus stops on time. Japanese are very punctual. Once I arrived at Kii Tanabe Station, my quest began. My first night at the Ryokan Adumaya in Yunomine was a treat. The staff was kind, the water was warm and the Onsen Eggs were unforgettable. My second day began on the Kumano Kodo. My arranged bento box was packed. The first (and only) trail was not hard, just long. I was too exhausted for another long day. I arrived at Momofuko Minshuku - totally wiped out! The owners treated me like family and fed me like a hungry college student. I opted out of trekking and took the bus to Nachi Temple. Incredible site. Again, I had another delicious bento box. Oishii. I arrived at the Katsuura Gyoen that night. I'll admit it was a bit dated but a very relaxing onsen by the ocean was all I needed. The room was very comfortable. I needed to cancel my last day in order to meet friends in Osaka. Kumano Travel contacted me at the hotel before checking out and explained the billing. That was a special moment. I would recommend this trip to a close friend. Thank you, Jimmychan

Great historic pplace
Very good service. Loved the old style and historic nature of this Ryokan. They are good at showing you where things are but noone explained the location of the outside bath. So we thought the brochure was wrong until I asked and it was like the brochure. The water was too hot for even the locals to stay in too long.

Traditional onsen ryokan
We felt as though we had stepped back in time when we arrived in Yunomine. Ryokan Adumaya maintains its historical architecture and nostalgic atmosphere. English ability among the staff is limited. The food is plentiful and reflects the forest/ mountain setting. One dish was deer sashimi which we did not care for. Loved the common bathing area--very old world. We had to book the largest room as the one we wanted was unavailable. At 70,000 yen it was expensive, but we had a memorable experience.

Information in English.
We thought it could have been more information on the tradition and food in English. That would have made us feel more comfortable. It would also be nice to have more in depth information on the pilgrimage routes. We made a lovely 6 hours trip and that was the best part of the whole stay!

Stay for the outside bath
We has a rest day here so stayed 2 nights. The ryokan is getting a little bit old and worn but still a great experience. You get tea and meals served in your room (which was enormous, actually 3 rooms). They have an outside bath in a small courtyard (also inside baths), and I soaked in the warm water after a long days walk and it was heaven. We had a room at the front so we could watch everyone promenading along the main street.

Wonderful Stay at Ryokan Adumaya
Ryokan Adumaya delivered on all fronts--service, food, and setting. The staff was warm and helpful--they quickly handled a last minute luggage shipment to one of our future lodgings. The food delighted us. And, the setting--room, inn, baths, and town--restored our energy after some hot urban travel. We really enjoyed our experience in Yunomine Onsen before setting off on the trail.

Great stay, great food, great onsen
This ryokan is the most expensive place in Yunomine, located in its very center. While far from a luxury standard, it is a great where the onsen (old wooden style) and the food (the two main reasons while we were here) were fabulous. The place itself is very beautiful, confortable, clean ; rooms are spacious, and sleeping is futon ; maybe it will be considered a little old to some people, but we were really happy with the Japanese traditional style and the perfect welcome brought out by our hosts.

All good but some improvements would be nice
This Ryokan was very nice and we got a nice room overlooking the valley. I would however suggest a higher fence around the outside baths (we could see people and they could have seen us when we were bathing naked). The receptionist also ( a young gentlemen in his 20's) wasn't very helpful when we have asked for taxis and transport to Watayama Onsen. Maybe it was a language barrier, however we also had a Japanese person with us and she said he didn't want to help her much. Overall however it was a nice place.

Traditional Ryokan
Food - no complain, that is really great, 1st time I tried that many items in Kiseki meal. Stay - the ryokan looks old but comfort, the only comment I have is the room is a bit small, may be because the 1st 2 days I had such a big space. Onsen is great too, I particulary like the outdoor although I can't stay too long due to the temerature of the onsen.

Excellent ryokan centrally located in charming onsen town.
The friendly and warm hospitality made this ryokan experience stand out. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome, fetching us from the bus stop in Hongu, having the owner stop by to welcome us and Megumi's patient explanations about the food. The food was plentiful and excellent. The baths were sublime and switching male/female every 24 hours gave everyone in our party a full experience. The location is directly across from the public & national heritage baths as well as opposite the bus stop so couldn't have been more convenient. Highly recommend staying in this comfortable ryokan and charming town for total relaxation.

Pricey but worth it
I deliberately paid the cost of this traditional ryokan because I wanted my son to be able to experience a high quality, traditional ryokan in this famous onsen town of Yunomine. Our room was wonderful - clean, beautiful mats. Wonderful service. Our meals were huge and multi-course and were served to us in our room The owner actually came by to say hello and welcome us and invite us to bathe often in the healing waters of the onsen. Our waiter was amazing - he must have made 10 or more trips to our room for each meal. And the onsen - the baths - were just amazing. Very warm mineral waters - there was both an indoor and outdoor onsen available right at the hotel and we were generally the only ones there using it. Beautiful wood and decor. This is a very special experience and well worth the high cost, in my opinion. I would return if I ever have the chance.

Old style glamour
The meals (specially the multi course dinner)and the baths were magnificent. The room was a bit old, but it matched the style of the place. We had a bit of trouble understanding we were supposed to choose between bread and rice at breakfast. If you can deal with Japanese breakfast at all, do choose rice, the meal is much better.

The best place to stay in Yunomine
We really enjoyed the outdoor baths in Adumaya, but the hotel itself is a bit run down now, though historic and beautiful. For some reason, our non-smoking room and the hallway were filled with cigarette smoke. The room was on the small side, and needed some repair and painting. The service was wonderful and personable, and the food was good. However, I chipped a tooth on a stone that was inside a whole river fish that was served. It might help to advise patrons that this can happen, and to eat cautiously.

Lovely Ryokan Nice Ambiance & Comfortable Osen
It is a lovely historical ryokan with rich oriental cultural atmosphere espeicially familar to Chinese. Master Yamamoto Gempo interests me a lot. Calligraphies and paintings there are touching with this hundred-year-old house. We will especially thank the Kumano Tourist Association Honggu Office and Adumaya staff. They help our family out of the stuck on Kumano Kodo. Their hospitality and honesty impressed and moved me. It is these virtues and beautiful hot springs that makes the winter warm.

The best ryokan in Yunomine probably
This is a famous ryokan in Yunomine and I was glad that I had chosen to stay there. The onsen bath in the ryokan was tastefully built in traditional wood and stone and it was wonderful soaking in the nostalgic atmosphere and ambiance of the old building. Service was top notch and despite being fully booked that day. Another plus point was that the ryokan was right in front of a bus stop and very near the entrance/exit of the Dainichigoe trail from Honguro to Yunomine. You can buy eggs or sweet potatoes to cook in the onsen water from the shops right in front of the hotel.

Extremely Disappointing
This accommodation was extremely disappointing. I asked to change rooms as the first room was not clean. The second room was slightly better but still not at the standard of the sample room depicted on the photos on the website or that should be expected of an establishment at this cost. This was the worst accommodation we have stayed in during our visit to the region. It was also the most expensive (almost double the cost of the other accommodation options). If my Japanese was better or the hotel staff's English was better I would have requested a full refund and sought out alternate accommodation for the night. I took some photographs of the room as words can not fdescribe the neglected maintenance issues and less than clean state of the rooms we saw. I love Japanese food. But could not eat the food at this ryokan as it was terrible (inedible, less than fresh). I had to go to the food store to get something to eat. The breakfast was obviously prepared the previous day/night and was the most unappetising plate of food I have ever seen. It should be impossible to mess up eggs and toasted bread? The outdoor onsen was lovely but the bathrooms were dated and not very clean. The onsen tax ought to have been absorbed by the hotel into the room cost. this historic ryokan is long overdue some essential maintenance and a thorough cleaning.

Beautiful lodging with historic atmosphere
The Ryokan Adumaya was a fun place to stay for all of the historical ambiance of Yunomine Onsen, which is much prettier than Hongu but easily reached from there by hiking or bus. I loved sitting and reading in the glass covered extension to my room and it was a pleasure to talk to the staff who were helpful and friendly. Though this was the most expensive lodging of my trip I was disappointed to find that the food was not as good at Ryokan Adumaya as it was at all of the other lodgings of my trip. The beef hot pot was relatively flavourless and many of the small dishes lacked flare. The fish was exceptionally dry. Breakfasts were quite good however, especially the tofu and onsen egg/rice porridge.

Stay here.
We stayed here on our first night while hiking the Kumano Kodo. It was a great place to stay. The owners were so gracious and sweet and made sure we were comfortable. Our only, very tiny, complaint would be that the windows rattled in the night as the wind and rain caused them to move. The room was spotless and well decorated and charming. the wc and shower (no common soaking bath)were very clean. The meals were fantastic. The owners made sure we had everything we needed for the trail and even made a special effort to bring hot coffee to us on the trail. So incredibly kind. We really enjoyed staying here.

A wonderful atmosphere, a feeling of genuine Japan, of onsen, food, forest-paths and village.
The trip to Yunomine Onsen and Ryokan Adumaya was the highlight of our trip to Japan. The hotel was very special- There was a wonderful atmosphere of genuine Japan, of onsen and food. And the surrounding forest and village gave the hotel a very deeply felt charm. In all respects it was wonderful and happy days in this peaceful environment. We climbed the steep hillsides, wandered the forests, walked the mountainridges, listeded to the birds and frogs singing and afterwards we enjoyed a hot bath in the onsen of the hotel. And the food was overwhelming, so much, so many dishes, so beautifully arranged. We are very thankful for the care we received, the friendliness of the staff, the atmosphere and feeling of it all. I will recommend this place to everyone! Thank you so much!

When they say ""oldest hot spring . . ."", we say: Shabby!
And thats not ""shabby chic"". Lets see, Service was great (but if you run the most expensive place in town, why not learn a little bit more English? The food I think we ""lost in translation"" (we are just to unexperienced for that level of japanese food). BUT, the rooms, common areas and baths were TOO run down, and when we notice in details that things are not cleaned proper we got very suprised (or where we lucking at all other places?) All in all, this was our most expensive stay during our 2 week holiday in Japan and our most disappointing, sad in a way.

I loved the village of Yunomine and I am sure it would be fun in better times and with company.
Next time I would elect to stay at a Minshuku or other property. Guestroom: I guess I had the pick of the house as I was likely the only guest, although I spotted one gent in the bath as I checked in on arrival. The room was ordinary in old traditional Japanese style. Baths: Nothing special compared to past experience. Meals: Dinner looked OK but again, considering the price, was pretty ordinary. Breakfast appeared on the table whilst I was at bath. A cold omelette, tomato sauce and a bit of salad. Uninspiring. I had a very bad stomach for a few days likely from the food as it was probably not that fresh due to lack of turnover Location: Loved the little valley village but it was so deserted and sad. Reception & Service: Bit of a non event. The most action was that I was chased out at the bus stop to pay the Y150 Onsen fee! I mentioned before that as a fairly frequent visitor to Japan, I was sad to witness that, like many places, the economy is suffering with lots of closed places of business. However it is still a very special country to visit and will improve as will most I hope. I would certainly revisit the region again.

Beautiful ryokan on mountain
The ryokan is very easy to find, but there is no many buses to go there. And the last bus is at 04:00 pm so be careful when tourists want to reach the ryokan. We have a japanese style room, with a nice view. The staff is very helpful and kind. We advise people who book at this ryokan to order the supper, because there is no restaurant around, or if there are, we didn't find them. The supper is great, it is very copious, a mix of japanese cooking. We love it! The onsen is lovely after a long trip by bus.

Kumano Kodo
the BEST onsen on my trip superlative in every possible way two baths with the slightly rotten egg smell that indicates high sulfur mineral content a marvelous steam room absolutely one of the finest experiences of my travels around the planet prefer to take my meals with other people but the service girls were very funny laughing the whole time as my Japanese non existent and there English just a step above but when you are dealing with people from the heart language is always secondary they made me feel right at home better to get a room on second floor as the ceilings are thin the hike from Yunomine to Hongu well worth the climb the shrine in Hongu will bring out the best of your emotions towards Japanese culture and the perfection behind everything that is beautiful in it

I was dispointed. The first room has had a dirty and bad smelling toilet and I got very loud neighbors and asked for a new room. I got it (""Hi no ki"" was the name of the new room)but also there: dirty and old bath/toilet with brown water from the washplace, dirty cupbord in the toilet. I will send some pictures in a separat mail. No heater, I needed to ask for a hairdryer. also the hold hotel very old and dirty carpets, All bath and toilet-instalations in the ofuro-area dirty and rusty. I am not very spoiled, but it was for THIS EXPENSIVE ( 41 000 yen for 2 nights) absolutly not worthy. I allready payed, but in an other situation I would not stay there for 2 nigths. I can absolutely not recommending. I know it is 300 years old, but a good standart of toiletequipment and bathhygiene, clean carpets on the floor and a lower price is needed. The staff was nice, especially the woman who bring me the meals. Only one thing: first I thougt, I am on a wrong place. because in Hiragans is it ""Adsumaya"", but written in all english booklets is it always Adumaya. It was a bit confusing. I asked the driver for Adumaya Ryokan and he said, no, it is for Adsumaya Ryokan. Then I said my name and he said, yes, he is waiting for me to pick me up. Sorry for this bad feedback but for this top end priced Ryokan is it important for You to know. A very nice place was the Rotemburo.

Everything about this ryokan was disapointing except for the meals, which were quite good. Considering the high price charged we had expected much higher quality accommodation and service. The lack of any non-smoking rooms was also disappointing.

We had to check out at 7 am which was the time when breakfast would normally be served. We were told that breakfast could not be served any earlier. We would have appreciated a snack to bring with us or a partial refund for the missed breakfast but we were told this was not possible.

The food was delicious, refined and quite copious!
Not only were we greeted by the owner, but he offered his phone number in case we needed help or missed the bus from Hongu, as we were walking the longer route. Our server for meals and preparing the bed was EXTRAORDINARY! Delightful, charming and highly efficient and discreet. The Onsen was perfect, and we appreciated that it was open for use 24 hours a day. The food was delicious, refined and quite copious!
