 Description

Laid-back Family-run Japanese Onsen Inn

Ebisuso Ryokan is a hot spring Japanese style inn located in Totsukawa Onsen in Nara Prefecture.  It is a family run establishment hosting guests for over 40 years.  The verdant garden and lantern in the entrance is a landmark in the narrow streets of this mountain settlement overlooking a man-made lake.  Totsukawa Onsen is located along the Kumano Kodo Kohechi pilgrimage route between Hatenashi-toge pass and Miura-toge pass.

Totsukawa Onsen is famous for its high-quality non-circulating mineral water baths, and Ebisuso is no exception.  Soaking in the roof-top outdoor bath is a highlight for many guests.

Supper is focused on locally produced vegetables served with many duck and chicken in a “nabe” or hot pot style dish.  Breakfast also highlights locally catch fish and homemade dishes.  Delicious!

Luxurious stay in Totsukawa onsen

Ryokan Ebisuso was our most luxurious stay during our hike. As we arrived in Totsukawa a little bit early, the hosts gave us discounted tickets to a natural hot-spring bathhouse, which was perfect for resting our bones after a long hike. We were somehow the only guests in this ryokan, and we were treated with utmost respect. The room was spacious and very comfortable. We were given very delicate yukata to wear in our room and in the facilities. The food is michelin-star worthy. We were presented with plate after plate of delicately seasoned vegetables and fish of local origin. Everything was delicious, and although the quantities seemed small, we were pleasantly full. They also have a very good sake and wine card, which we tried out - and suggest for everyone else to do as well! Thank you for your hospitality!

Great stay

We had a great stay at Ryokan Ebisuso! Our room was spacious and very clean. Pretty yukatas and tea were waiting for us. The onsen baths were amazing with indoor, outdoor and even a family bath option. The food was delicious, locally sourced and expertly spiced. We had a wonderful stay, thank you! The location is a bit further away from the Kumano Kodo Kohechi trailhead, which was less convenient for us, but for people taking the bus this is not a problem at all!

Ryokan Ebisuso was the absolute highlight of our 2-week trip to Japan. The service was impeccable, the food was incredible (local and flavorful), and the beds were incredibly comfortable. It was well worth the 20-minute walk from Hotel Suburu. The hot springs and private baths were amazing, and we absolutely loved trying the local fruit wines and sakes. We stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The ryokan's location in Totsukawa Onsen was perfect for exploring the surrounding area. We enjoyed hiking in the nearby mountains, visiting the local temples and shrines, and soaking in the natural beauty of the region. The staff at Ebisuso were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the local area, providing us with valuable recommendations for things to see and do. Overall, our stay at Ryokan Ebisuso was an unforgettable experience. We would highly recommend this ryokan to anyone visiting Japan, especially those looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Fantastic stay

Everything was excellent. The food was exceptional. Possibly the best meal we had during our two week stay in Japan. The small clean outdoor onsen was a delight.

Best hotel experience ever

Words fall short to describe how incredibly heartwarming our stay at Ryokan Ebisuso was. We cannot thank our hosts enough for their hospitality. They even dropped us of on the start of the next route of the Kohechi trail the next day. The onsen was just perfect after a day of heavy walking and the meal they prepared was a culinary ecstasy.

Clean, friendly and delicious

We loved the location in the middle of a small town. Has multiple onsens including outdoor ones. The owners were very friendly and one of them is a great cook--- one of the best meals we had. The entire place felt very clean.

This ryokan was a special treat!

Dinner was scrumptious with all the fresh vegetables and meats. Breakfast was just as good. There are three private onsen to choose from, and the one on the roof is perfect for watching the stars at night! Pleasant, sizable room with air conditioning. The soft futon on the beautiful tatami mat floor coaxes any insomniac like me to blissful sleep. I discovered hot matcha milk downstairs. They had a jar of mix to add to hot water. It was with the tea and coffee. I spent some time looking through the books, especially the Kumano Kodo ones. I must return here. I highly recommend this ryokan to anyone staying in town, not just hikers. The couple were sweet and the husband an amazing chef!

The evening meal was one of the best I have ever eaten, and the service was amazingly friendly - courteous and professional, and very very helpful. Location - hard to review fairly as it was pouring with rain the whole time we were there - we arrived late afternoon and left early the next day. Baths - I was hoping to make use of the river onsen which Totsukawa is famous for, but the rain was torrential and we just didn't have time. The ryokan onsen was fine - very very hot on the day we arrived (to the point where a foot placed in the water came out bright red, seconds later) - much better the next day.

Gourmet food and a great bath

The ryokan has been renovated and the building looks brand new and sparkling clean. Add the gourmet food and great rotenburo (outdoor) bath and it's a wonderful place to stay after a hard hike.
