Magical water
We loved staying in this Ryokan after a long day walking. Our name was posted in front of the ryokan so we knew we were at the right place!
The food was fabulous, with freshly caught fish from the river.
The water here is very special and completely cured the articulation problems I was having.
I hope to come back!

Superb meals and accommodation especially after a long hike over the mountains. The onsen helped soothe my aches and pains from such a grueling hike. The staff were warm and welcoming, the meals were superb and delicious. I had a good night's rest to start Day 4 of the Kohechi Route!

What a privilege to stay in the oldest onsen, and one with four generations of history, in Totsukawa village. I only wish I had more time to explore in the village. The owner took time to talk and explain the history of her family, her husband, and the wonderful work they do as hosts. Thank you!

Great location, clean room and delicious meals
The location is a little distance (~2km) from the Kumano Kodo trailhead (which is situated near to Hotel Subaru).
The room is clean and comfortable. Very thankful to the staff who helped to lay out the futons!
Meals are superb and delicious, best for refueling after a day of hiking.
The public bath/onsen is a little small, accomodates about 4 pax at a time. There is a small outdoor onsen for private use, very nice.

二津野ダムを見渡せる角部屋で、清潔感もあり良かったです。部屋の扉に錠が付いていて内側から閉めることはできますが、外側から閉めるための鍵がなかったので（鍵穴はある）、外出時には開けっ放しになってしまうのが残念で不思議でした。ここもぼたん鍋でしたが、上手く冷凍・解凍されているのか、冷凍臭はありませんでした。その他の料理も満足できる内容ですが、宿泊費を考えると妥当か、もっと良くても・・・と思います。

Quiet Place, with amazing Onsen
We loved this place for the private onsen (Water from Totsukawa Onsen)- my partner and I were able to use it, which was a great way to end the day after a lot of walking. The Ryokan was a little quiet, with not many customers. The rooms were generously large.

A very welcoming place after getting thoroughly soaked on the 1st day of my Kohechi walk. The staff had set aside a room for me to hang up my wet clothes and boots. They out newspapers inside my boots and turned on drying equipment to ensure my gear was dry for the next day. Despite language barrier (Google translate helped with that a lot!) they helped me with weather forecasts, as a typhoon was causing some strong weather and I was unsure about walking the next day. The room, hot spring bath and meals were excellent. Great place to stay.

Very comfortable ryokan
The best ryokan we stayed in on our 3 week trip to Japan- a really good balance between attention and privacy, and between size and comfort. Would thoroughly recommend. The only drawback is that (if walking the Kumano Kodo) it is a km or two from the route; but the host very kindly dropped us off at the trailhead in the morning so we only had to walk it once!

Small. friendly hotel with great views.
Located in the heart of this small onsen town, this hotel is close to all of the town's shops and services. Warm welcome at reception and I was offered a choice of bedrooms for the night. I picked the smallest room with the best views. The hotel has its own natural onsen with both public and private baths.

Beautiful ryokan with male/female and private onsens. Our room looked over the lake with beautiful views and the food was amazing. Location was good and easy to find and staff helpful. A little bit on the expensive side but worth the splurge. Would recommend!

This was a superb stay. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both excellent and both were served in a private room separate from our bedroom. Actually, this was both good and bad. Good from a privacy point of view, but we wouldn't have minded chatting to the other guests, some of whom were also walking the Kohechi route in the opposite direction.

Relaxing atmosphere
Although located 30 minutes away from the kumano kodō, it was very easy to find. They had prepared a beautiful yukata for me and the onsen was very relaxing. On the next day, the owner even offered to drive me to the trailhead of kumano kodō!

We enjoyed staying at Ryokan Tabanakan! Our guest room had a beautiful view of the Kumano River and was spacious and comfortable. We appreciated the Japanese tea upon arrival and the long soak in the Onsen. The food was delicious and nourishing. It was a convenient location for hiking the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route.

Loved the place but the food...
Great view, onsen was pretty nice, loved the staff/owner. The only real complaint is regarding the quality of food- this mirrors other comments I have read online about this ryokan- insufficient portions and just not that well prepared food for any of the meals we had over two nights here.

温泉が最高でした

Nice place but be prepared to walk extra
This place is very comfortable with great rooms and good food - perhaps not quite reflective in the price though. As with most places in this area accommodation is 2km off the trail so be prepared for the additional walk at the end of the day and then again the next morning. Service was pleasant but not necessarily overly friendly.

We stayed at Ryokan Tabanakan on the first day of our Kohechi hike mid September. Overall we were very happy with our stay: The room was great: It was very clean, and had a little sitting area overlooking the river in front of the window. Great for relaxing after the exhausting first day of the hike. Also, it seemed to have fairly new tatami. The private outdoor onsen was great as well. Recommended!

100%源泉かけ流しの湯
「加水しない本当の100%の源泉かけ流しは、ウチだけ」が自慢のお湯です。60度の源泉を水を加えずに42度前後に管理するノウハウを知りました。草津温泉あたりには、「湯守」というプロの職人がいるようですが、ここではどうなのでしょう。西中バス停から十津川温泉までの約9Kmの道路歩きは、いささかくたびれましたが、おかげさまで精気が蘇りました。翌日は、昨日通った昴の郷の旧トンネル口まで送っていただきました。

The location and view from the Ryokan were absolutely beautiful, the food was delicious and the owners were very welcoming and helpful- they even drove us to the beginning of the trail the following morning. お食事は別のお部屋を用意されて居てゆっくり食べれました。お食事内容も全ての食材調理法にこだわりがありとても美味しかったです！お友達に是非食べに行ってみてと薦めたくなる内容です。温泉はかけ流しで最高です。朝5時から入れるんで出発前にも入りました。すぐ近くに無料の足湯もありました。朝の出発を早くしたかった希望をこころよく了承して貰え、朝ご飯を30分早めて下さいました、小辺路コース、当日のスタート地点迄車で送って貰えたのも有り難かったかったです！険しい小辺路コースの最終日を 無事歩く為にも十津川温泉での宿泊には是非お勧めのお宿です！

The ryokan is easy to find, very close to Totsukawa Onsen bus station. There is an excellent onsen inside, available in the evening and in the morning. The food is served in the room, dinner and breakfast were excellent and voluminous. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I give ryokan Tabanakan a 10 out of 10!

Tanabakan - charming, helpful, wonderful
We arrived at Tanabakan soaking wet and exhausted after a rainy day of hiking. Our hosts were kind, thoughtful and helpful in every way, helping us (through the language barrier) to contact Kumano Travel and to reassure the next day's accomodation of our arrival, and even showed us to the bus stop the next morning. The hotel is charming and well-kept, and the bath is excellent.

Tabanakan was probably our most luxurious stop on our trip. The food was incredible! Dinner was a multi-course meal with fresh local products and exquisitely presented. Breakfast was likewise beautiful, delicate but filling. The host was wonderful and very welcoming- I wish I had brought omiyage to give her from home! The only downside is that it is a bit far from the trailhead and buses from the area to the trailhead don't leave until 9:30am. We opted to take a taxi (rather than walk 2 hours on asphalt) which ended up costing around 3000Y.

My husband and I had a very pleasant stay at Ryokan Tabanakan. The hotel is in the middle of the Totsukawa Onsen village and easy to find, we recommend taking a bus from the trail head in Nishinaka, that saves you two hours walking on a road. In the morning we planned to take a bus back to the trail head on the southern side of Totsukawa Onsen, but were offered a shuttle by the hotel owners instead, which was a very nice service. Food was delicious with local specialties. And bathing in the Onsen of the hotel was very relaxing after a long day of hiking.

Do not miss this place!
Perhaps our favorite accommodation during our three week trip across Japan. The food is amazing, as are the baths. It was also nice to stay a short way off the main Kohetchi route -- far enough to be off the beaten path, but still only a short way from the trail. Highly recommended!

Excellent on all accounts, but expensive
Excellent for everything. But it is not cheap, and there is no cheap alternative for the 3rd night of the Kohechi trail. It is a 20 minutes detour and the village is not very beautiful, but there are shops.

Friendly Host, Delicious Food
This was a lovely ryokan. The host was very friendly and stayed with me for a few minutes in my room while I was drinking tea to make conversation and to make sure I was settled. The room was spacious and clean. The view was nice. And the food was delicious. I appreciated that the room has it's own sink and vanity so you don't have to walk back to the bathroom. The only drawback is that it was a bit far from the Kohechi trailhead.

The nicest accommodation I had on my walk
This lovely quiet ryokan was the best accommodation I had on my walk. The owner met me with a friendly smile, and the room was lovely. It was also really nice to have a rotenburo and to be served dinner and breakfast in the room. The area was peaceful and quiet, but it is about a 15 minute walk from the Kohechi trailhead. Having said that, it was nice to explore the little town and admire the views of the emerald green river. Food was excellent as well!

+The room was clean and spacious and the staff made your bed for you.
+The meals were almost too much. Served in your bedroom. Really copious with different kind of dishes. And quite good.
+A supermarket was not too far from the ryokan.
-The baths and toilets were not in the room and it was cold outside.
-It's really far from the main Kumano trail. I thought I got lost and someone was nice enough to take me there by car.
Hint : take off your jewelry when you go the onsen. Or beware of the oxidation.

Vey nice located at the edge of a river with a nice view. But unfortunately next to a long road, not so pleasant to walk on right next to the traffic. The bath was really nice and the food was good.

This Ryokan has an excellent onsen which is exactly what you need after a long days walk. The staff was very friendly and helped me dry my clothes which had become wet during a days walk through heavy rain. The dinner was spectacular.

A Really Nice Small Hotel
This hotel was a nice surprise because our rooms had lovely views of the river which we had not expected. It was quiet and very clean. The onsen was good, particularly the private, outdoor one. The food was excellent and abundant at meal times. Well worth the money.

One of the most enjoyable stays during my trip
I loved Ryokan Tabanakan. The ryokan is owned by a couple. I spoke and interacted only with the wife. She was a most gracious and friendly host. She didn't speak a lot of english, but I didn't speak any japanese. So we played quite a bit of charades in order to communicate. I also met her daughter and son in law who were visiting for her son's wedding. When you are travelling alone, it is always nice when someone is willing to tell you a bit about their life. That warmth and openness meant a lot to me after a long day of hiking by myself. Aside from her wonderful hospitality, the food was absolutely delicious. I had a boar hot pot, deer, grilled and fried fish all in one dinner. That was in addition to other smaller and tasty dishes. I was absolutely stuffed. In terms of baths the ryokan has both a private outdoor and separate indoor baths. I tried both and they were wonderful. They were stone, as opposed to cedar, and were very beautiful! I would highly recommend this ryokan and if I return to Totsukawa Onsen I would not hesitate to stay with them again.

食事はご主人が釣った鮎やら、猪やら、此地の魅力溢れる食材に満ちていました。特筆すべきはお風呂です。源泉掛け流しで、24時間素晴らしい湯を味わえます。山中で負傷したのですが、治りが早くてビックリしました。疲れも取れます。本当に良い湯でした。
