The guestroom was spacious and comfortable. The onsen was so relaxing after a long days walk. The meals were beautifully prepared and enormous. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The Ryokan was a little hard to find - but a local bus got us there.

Great hospitality, delicious meals and beautiful onsen
We were very warmly welcomed by the guest house staff after a gruelling 8 hour hike from Chikatsuyu. We arrived earlier than most and were able to enjoy the private onsen which was an absolute treat that instantly eased our super sore muscles. The public onsen has gorgeous views and they swap the male and female onsens after a certain time so that you get to experience a different scenery. The only minor downsides are that the room had a bit of a smoky smell that non-smokers might not like, and it is quite a far walk from the main area. But I will still stay here again for the amazing hospitality and beautiful secluded location.

Beautiful setting and indoor and outdoor onsens. It was a longer walk to the hotel from the kumano kodo than we expected (about 15 mins) but the next day they drove us back to the trail. They served a huge 12 course dinner in our room.

A Special Treat for the Body and Soul
By the time we finished our walk, attended the Dual Pilgrimage ceremony, walked to the Otorii at Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine and sacred Oyunohara sandbank, we missed the last bus leaving from Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine to our hotel. Fortunately, the hotel sent a shuttle bus to pick us up at the bus station and for this we are grateful. The special treat for our bodies was the most delectable shabu shabu set meal course for dinner and breakfast because it was different from the other meals we've had. The onsen bath was a treat for our weary muscles and soul restoring us back to good health and a restful sleep. Our rooms were spacious, and all the staff were friendly and accommodating. We highly recommend this hotel when visiting Hongu.

Wonderful ryokan in a rustic village
First off, the 12 course Kaiseki dinner was superlative. And a wonderful surprise. The onsens were great. I used both the private and public baths. The outdoor bath area of the public onsen is so serene and beautiful. They are a little outside Yunomine Onsen so remember to get off one bus stop before you get to Yunomine Onsen. They do provide drop off to the village and bus stop the next day.

Epitome of Relaxation in Yunomine
The hospitality found here approaches that of a five-star hotel. If you're a newcomer to either ryokans or onsen, this is the place to go. At check-in, they offer a deep explanation of everything from how to wear a yukata to onsen etiquette, with written explanations included. They are flexible with both dinner and breakfast time to accommodate differently paced hikers. Hopefully you're hungry, because you are in for an absolute grand prix of a meal with multiple courses and excellently trained wait staff that will suggest order and what food is paired with that. The amenities here are amazing too, with a great game room that has karaoke and table games. The onsen here is exactly what the doctor ordered for relaxing in the middle of a multi-day hike, and if you have lucky timing you'll even be able to spend some time on one of the two private onsen baths. Staff will tactfully lay out your bedding while you are at dinner, so you don't need to worry about reorganizing the room. The ryokan staff also even dropped us off at the bus stop in the morning, and planned our drop-off time so as to not miss an early bus back to Hongu. Thank you! - Bryan and Adel P.S. keep your eyes peeled to the forest when you are walking the road to the ryokan - you may be able to catch sight of some Japanese macaques!

Great stay with onsen
Room was nice with great views. Keep in mind that there is no bath in room, only toilet and a sink. This is not an issue as you can shower at the onsen, also other onsen hotels had same arrangment. Dinner was wonderful traditional Japanese type, location is a bit out of the village, 500m. Overall great stay

Very wonderful inn with lots of bath options
It was a traditional onsen inn. It was full on New Years Eve with families. The food was great and they had an English menu as well as English-speaking staff at reception and at the restaurant. They switch the men/women baths midway in the night, so if you want to try all of the baths, you could. They dropped us off at the bus station in the morning. Great stay!

Great Ryokan and excellent service
This Ryokan is 10min away walking from Yonumine Onsen town, but the staff compensates for it and will drive you from the Ryokan to town the next morning. Room was spacious and comfortable, and the meals were also good. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Also, the baths were very good. The only suggestion I would make is to provide an alternative to the traditional Japanese breakfast, which for us at least was a little bit stronger than what we are used to having early in the morning. Aside from that, I would recommend staying here.

Good welcome, excellent front , nice bath, but problems at dinner
We were quite impressed with the organization of the front desk, making sure everything was clear, helping with luggage transport and making sure we had a chance to see Yunemine Onsen proper. The bath was nice too. The ingredients of the dinner appeared promising too, but the entire meal was spoiled by the air conditioning. Some idiot had set it so high that draft blew the flames of the burner to the side so the water for the shabu-shabu never boiled. While this was happening…or better said NOT happening…the personnel disappeared for a long time. What a shame!

Family travel with kids-Exceptional service, vegetarian food, onsen
One of the best places we stayed at. We stayed here for 2 nights. Service was top notch. We had asked for vegetarian meals and were amazed at the variety and the taste in the dishes. It was our first experience with traditional Japanese Kaiseki meals and we were blown away by the aesthetics and the artful presentation of the dishes and the effort the chefs put in to make the meal completely vegetarian. It was one of the most memorable experiences for us. The onsite public and private baths were really nice, the use of yukatas was fun for the kids. The entire experience was Japanese hospitality at it's best!

Unfortunately there was no luggage shuttle organized!!!! Kumano Travel just told us to take the luggage with uns. (That would have been a big problem, because the local bus was overcrowded and it would have been impossible to take our luggage with us.) I hoped that Kumano Travel would find a new solution, but they weren't helpful at all. We were very lucky that tie Ryokan was very very kind and organized another company (same price) and that worked fine.

Best onsen soak and staff is exemplary
We missed most of the buses after arriving at Hongu Taisha at sunset, and the ryokan picked us up. We were very appreciative of this as the hike took us longer than anticipated (11 hrs). And bone-tired, this onsen had a ton of minerals (strong sulfur smell) that leeched away our fatigue and soreness. This was the best onsen soak we had. The food was also phenomenal. We had to cancel the hike the next day due to rain and the staff was quite helpful with alternatives and even took us to the bus stop by car, which we waited in until the bus arrived. Staff went over and beyond!!

Amazing hospitality
We arrived earlier than expected since we took a bus from Chikatsuyu to Yunomine Onsen instead of hiking, but the staff was super friendly and let us drop off our luggage (and brought it to our rooms when they were ready), while we explored the area, the hot springs, and ate some lunch. We checked in around 2pm - the room was lovely and had a beautiful view of the mountains. We got to use the private onsen and a 12 course dinner was served to us in our room, it was the best food of our entire trip to Japan. There's a great gift shop and they have 2 dogs Kuma and Mago!

Ryokan Yunomineso
This was a different experience than our other accommodations because it is a much larger hotel. We happened to share it with 35 members of a French tour group, among other people. Despite its size, we found our hosts to be friendly and most of our interactions were with the same man, who appeared to be doing every job in the hotel -- front-desk check-in, running the souvenir shop, welcoming us at dinner, etc. etc. The baths were wonderful, the food was top-notch, and our hosts were very kind in giving us a shuttle ride to the bus stop we needed to get back to the Kii-Tanabe station.

Clean very Japanese style
Reception staff and all staff were great, I arrived three hours early and they had my room be cleaned in a hurry and let me check in. The place is a bit out of town, but still walkable. The onsen is great, loved the outdoors onsen. The meals are Japanese style, very Japanese, country side Japanese rather than urban Japanese. Dinner included multiple small dishes, soups and some upscale local delicacies that are wasted on many westerns (including me), but I still mostly liked it. Dinner is served in your room, and breakfast has assigned seating with food served at your table. I generally love Japanese food, and loved the vast majority of the meals I had during my Japan trip, but couldn’t get much that is edible for me for breakfast. I wish they would offer a buffet style meal, and a less formal structure of the meals. I have to say that the least thing I appreciated about my whole stay was the dinner server bowing and walking backwards as she exited the room. Please understand that while this can be appreciated as a sign of respect in some cultures, it’s unnerving for westerners.

Despite Yunomineso being a larger accommodation facility, the staff made every effort to let guests experience authenticity of Japanese ryokan, food and baths, as well as they are willing to help with travel plans.

Great way to end the trip
Although a slight distance from Hongu it is easily accessible by bus, and is only 3 minute walk from the bus stop. Lovely room, shabu shabu set dinner was amazing as was breakfast. It was nice to have a long soak in the onsen, and you quickly get used the o the smell of the hot mineral spring water.

Nice quiet location and elaborate dinner
Located about 10 mins walk from town, and in a nice quiet location. Rooms are big but quite basic. They prepare a elaborate pre-booked dinner of 10 courses, which is very decent. My only complaint about the dinner is that they should check guest's dietary preferences, as my wife was served beef and horse meat to which she doesn't eat. Service is very decent, and they offer a shuttle van service to the bus stop on your check-out.

Ryokan yunomineso stay
We stayed at ryokan Yunomineso on our first night of our hike. This accomodation was fantastic. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They made us feel very welcome. Their onsens were perfect, had both indoor and outdoor as well as private ones. The food and room was amazing. Was a short walk from the town area and in the morning they dropped us off to the bus stop. Was a perfect way to start our hike. Would definitely return and would recommend to anyone travelling to this area.

Great stay
Our stay at Ryokan Yunomineso was a great experience! All the reception and meal staff were attentive, kind, and quick to answer questions with patience. The staff drove us to Yunomine Onsen for the Akagi-goe trailhead and to catch the bus back to Kii-Tanabe. The room was clean and bed was comfortable. We really enjoyed the breakfast and dinner kaiseki, where each meal element was served with care and professionally presented. The outdoor onsen was beautiful and relaxing!

Its a very nice hotel with a great staff
Super helpful staff. Took care of us in many ways as soon as we walked in. They explained everything carefully. Checked on our travel plans and provided maps and timetables for the next portion of our trip even though we weren't staying there. The room was very nice and had a nice view and sitting area. Bed was good. The food was good. My wife and I went into the private bath and it was smaller and private but had no windows or view. The main baths are nice and larger and with a view. They even drove us into town so that we got a better seat on the bus than if we took the bus in front of the Ryokan. It was a nice change from the smaller places we stayed on the trail

Amazing ryokan
I love everything about this place... other than it's a bit of a walk from the town center (10-15 mins). Then again, you can just stay in this ryokan and enjoy the amenities! Food's great, too! I liked the eating guide where it gives recommendations on how to eat the dishes in a certain sequence. The service was great, too, the staff was very nice. I had my luggage delivered directly there and it was already waiting in my room. And my room has a great view!

We are warmly welcomed by the staff at Ryokan Yunomineso. They have given us really valuable advice around the hiking route and transportation. They even offered to pick us up from Hongu Taisha. Ryokan Yunomineso
On the map, I was worried it was far out of town. However, it was the perfect location with a window view of the mountains on the 2nd floor and a quick 5 minute walk into the village of Yunomine Onsen. Our room had everything we needed to be comfortable. The front desk staff were excellent in helping with any travel information and timing of travel. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed the private onsen as well as community bath house. Both were excellent. The cooking breakfast fish smell came into our room because we were upstairs from the kitchen but other than that, everything was great with the food and young trainee hotel staff who were very very nice and helpful.

Awesome Staff, Private Baths Available
The ryokan is a short walk from the center of Yunomine, so it's not as busy or as full as the other ryokans. It has two large group baths and also two small private baths that are first-come-first-served. Both private baths were available when we used one at 5pm. The large baths have indoor and outdoor pools. All the water is very hot. It helps to stir the cool water on the bottom so it comes to the top. The building is a little older but most other buildings in Yunomine appeared to be a similar age. The staff were much younger and they were extremely nice, very positive and helpful, and several of them spoke good English.

We chose this high-end place for a change of pace and we were bowled over by what we got. We were served a special dinner of various meats, fish, soups, sauces, salads , etc. that seemed to go on and on. After dinner we enjoyed the large and lovely onsen while staff cleared the table and laid out our futons.

Ryoken/ hotel
This was a slightly larder Ryoken so not as intimate, still amazing food including forest snails! The outdoor onsen was great although with a bit of a sulphur smell (somewhat unavoidable). Welcome was great, rooms were spotless. It isn’t the most beautiful hotel from the outside but once you get past the exterior the experience is very good. Great stay after a long hike!
This hotel is slightly outdated, however we had a lovely room with a beautiful view. Dinner served in our room was traditional Japanese multi-course, which was also great. Service was exceptional. Breakfast was too much fish for my taste, and no coffee included which was a con. You do have to walk up a hill to arrive, but not too bad of a walk. We were hiking for 5 days and this was our "splurge day" in the middle, an opportunity to enjoy an onsen experience and work out some of our aches. It was definitely worth the extra price. The meals, in particular, were superb. The baths were excellent, with different pools with different temperatures. This may not be the highest luxury accommodation (the common areas seemed a little neglected and ready for refurbishment) but the meals, bathing pools, and helpful service staff really made our stay there worth the splurge. NOTE: the location is about a 5 minute walk from the center of Yunomineso. There is a bus stop at the foot of the ryokan's driveway, just one stop before (or after) the stop in the center of Yunomineso.

Dirtiest Hotel I have Been to in Japan
Having spent over a month total traveling Japan, this place was a shock-- I have not seen a more disgustingly dirty hotel in the country. A Lovely Ryokan Experience
This was our one true ryokan experience while traveling in Japan and I'm very glad we picked Ryokan Yunomineso. Our dinner was not just delicious but an experience within itself. Breakfast was also elaborate and very tasty. The baths were fantastic and definitely the highlight of staying here; I tried every single one! Hands down the outdoor bath is the best. The hotel is rather old but charmingly so. Our room was large, and I appreciated having a washing machine and dryer on site, so helpful! The staff were very kind and welcoming. Delightful getaway with exceptional service
A lovely experience, perfectly situated for hiking the Kumano Kodo. Extraordinary multi course meals and friendly caring staff who go out of their way to answer questions about bus schedules, hikes, etc...The onsen were a delight - spacious clean with all the toiletries one might need. Plus they switch sides for men and women each night so you get to experience both. A big lobby for drinks before or after dinner, ping pong and karaoke in the lounge and the rooftop deck with mountain views. A ten minute walk to the charming village of Yunomine. Yunominesou onsen - incredible find!
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Yunominesou guesthouse in our trip to the Kumano area. We were completely satisfied with it. The service was top notch, and the staff really helped us with all of our needs, such as knowing how to get around and moving our luggage to another place. The room was really comfortable, and the baths are fantastic. The great highlight was the meals, which met all of our requirements and provided us with the best of the fresh and local ingredients. I would recommend this place to everyone looking for a relaxing time in a beautiful place.

Overpriced
For the price, I was disappointed in the quality of this ryokan. The onsen was very pleasant however it looked a little dirty with disgusting white flakes. Maybe this is from the minerals however I have never seen this in any of the many other onsens I have visited. The rooms were clean however they looked a little old and past their prime. The food was just okay. Overall I found this property to be overrated.

Absolutely wonderful
I had a wonderful stay as a solo traveler at Yunomineso. The staff provided extraordinary service, the meals were diverse and absolutely delicious, and the rooms were comfortable. The onsen wasn't super clean, but I'm not sure how to avoid that with westerns who don't necessarily know how to use them properly.

Five star luxury
Our stay at Ryokan Yunomineso was definitely a highlight in our Kumano Kodo experience. Everything was of a very high standard from the attentive service and outstanding food, to the elegant rooms and exquisite baths. We enjoyed the private family Onsen with stone baths and shutters to the garden. A very luxurious and relaxing stay.

Ryokan Yunomineso -- Fantastic Experience!
After a long 2 days of hiking, it was so nice to relax and unwind here. The staff made sure that we were taken care of from the moment we arrived to the time that we left. The food was excellent and they were able to cater to my fish allergy. For me, the most memorable part was sitting in the open air bath at night with a gentle rain falling. It was awesome! I look forward to coming here again.

Large ryokan with excellent onsen
This ryokan is a 15 min walk from the trail, but they have a van and shuttled us the following morning. I imagine they would have picked us up too had we called. There are ping pong tables and other games. The service was great, with English spoken well by more than one staff member. The food was good, but clearly produced for a large ryokan.

Ryokan Yunomineso
A great way to end our walk. Accommodations were great, and meals, while not inexpensive, were the best we had while in Japan. Note: we didn't know ahead of time, but Ryokan Yunomineso staff picked up some of our group from Hongu, which avoided rushing to catch the last bus. They also delivered us to the bus stop the next morning.

We arrived after dark, and had some difficulty finding the ryokan from the yunomine onsen bus station. However, the reception was warm and fuss free. The onsen baths were easy to find and very comfortable and clean, and the water quality was excellent. Dinner was exceptional with the Ayu fish dish. I had valuable travel advice from the concierge on the next day's journey. To top it of, the shuttle service brought us to the bus stop with our luggage. All in all a pleasant experience.

Lovely!
This place is located a bit up the mountains, 5 min away from Yunomine town. We had trouble finding it initially, but we found it fairly easily after asking a bus driver. Everyone there speaks English if you do not speak Japanese. They were very helpful and accommodating here. Food, lodging and onsens were very nice, and the staff was available 24/7. Onsens are wonderful here, I especially enjoyed the outside ones at night and in the early morning. The private onsen was also a plus for my husband and I. They schedule your dinner, breakfast and bus trip for the following day once you check in. After a long couple of days all of their help was much appreciated. We had to leave early the following morning and they had their kitchen make us breakfast to go. Very sweet and friendly people here.

Everything here was great, and it was possible the best meal we had at any of the ryokans we stayed at. The one critique I could give is there is no shampoo/soap in the bathrooms in the hotel room. This was unusual for japan in our experience.

Had a lovely time at this onsen. The staff were all very nice and had no trouble speaking English. The dinner was amazing, so many dishes and all very fresh. Breakfast was equally as appetising. We only used the private group onsen instead of the general one at the ryokan. Room was very spacious and clean. Great view! Great supper and baths
The Ryokan is located a little outside the village, so maybe other hotels are a little more convinient after a long day of walking, that's why I didn't give it 5 stars: but it's not that far and there is a bus stop in front of it. The baths were the best we had during our stay, beautiful with indoor and outdoor baths: and it was great to be able to try both baths, thanks to the change at 10pm (men's bath -> women's bath). The food was excellent, we had 2 different meals and 2 breakfasts and loved everything!

Private Onsen & Private dining!
We were able to enjoy a private onsen, which was great, and also were very pleasantly surprised to find out we were to have our own attendant for our private dining experience. She was very gracious & friendly. The room was also lovely; it felt more Japanese than some of the other places. We were also driven up to the main bus stop in Yunomine Onsen the next morning, which was very helpful as it was extremely busy and we were able to get seats on the bus that may not have been available if we had boarded at the next stop (i.e. outside the hotel)

Outstanding ryokan in a paradise
We selected Yunomine for our stay because we did not want to hike the entire 5 day pilgrimage. Yunomine is an ideal location since it allows one to access two different trails, one of which leads to the main shrine. Yunomine-so must be one of the best ryokan in Japan. It is easily accessible by bus from the Tanabe train station. The hosts are most friendly and accomodating. They speak good English. The rooms are spacious and open to a panorama of green mountains. The dinner and breakfast are feasts with countless varieties, patiently explained by the hosts. There are private hotspring bath for familes and public for guests of the ryokans. Our room is also attached to a western style toilet and shower. Wifi at the lobby is powerful. To ensure a safe departure, the host used his car to take us to the nearby bus station and talked with the bus driver about where we should get off. I hope I can return to Yunomine-so and Kumano Kodo next year for a more extensive hiking experience.

What a location, and what a ryokan! This place had it all. It was expensive, but totally worth it. The place has several onsens. They had onsens for males, females, families and private ones as well. Very relaxing and very warm. I can imagine how it must be like it winter to soak in one of those! The meal was excellent as well. Again, there was a lot of food served. Wild boar tasted good, and well, everything else tasted amazing as well. As for the location, it is about 500 meters away from the nearby town, but the views are better in my opinion. Not as I hoped it would be.
I don't have anything bad to say about Yunomine-so except that there were no directions as to where it was located. It ended up being quite a ways down the road and up a hill from the closest bus stop. For 15,000 a person it could have been better. That being said I have no complaints.

Impeccable service, room and food
This was very different than we expected. It is quite a large hotel on the outskirts of town. However our experience here was brilliant. The manager of the hotel took amazing care of us. In particular, he had taken note of my vegetarianism and provided me with one of the best meals I have ever had. he had thought about every part, including all of the sauces etc. to ensure they were suitable. OUr room was huge and included a lovely balcony overlooking the river. This was kept for sleeping, while we were served our dinner in another hotel room, just down the hall. A great thing about the onsen here is that they have mens, womens and also private onsen rooms. This meant that my husband and I could share the experience together. We felt incredibly rested, clean and well fed after finishing our hike here. Wish we had time to stay a second night.
