Description
Mountain-side Cool Homestay
Sansaro Cafe & Guesthouse is a "mountain-side cool" home stay in Kumano-gawa village (15 minute bus ride from Koguchi). It was opened in 2014 by Ms. Uzawa, who fell in love with the location in the natural surroundings. She is a dynamic soul with strong interest in yoga, music, food, healing, and the vitality of the Kumano region. Sansaro is a cafe with a house next door. There is one guestroom in the cafe itself, the others are in the house. It overlooks the Akagi-gawa river and rice fields with mountains framing the horizon on all sides. The Kanmaru bus stop is nearby. Music is a mainstay with a DJ stand, piano, and other instruments. An onsen ticket is given to guests on check-in to use the nearby Satsuki hot spring bath for free (as there is no bath or shower onsite).
※NOTE: Free pass to Satsuki Onsen is not included with No Meal Plan.

Sweet Accomodation
I loved the accomodation. The owner is so sweet and helpful. She prepared delicious food for us. The rooms were cozy. The only issue is the location a little bit off the normal Nakahechi Route. But against my worries everything worked out great with the busses. The Cafe does not have a shower but provides Coupons to the onsen in town. It was a great experience there and i had the best time.

Location was about a 1.5 hour deviation from the main trail. Guestroom is located within cafe, no bath but has pass to onsen about 10 minute walk which was nice. Host was polite.

Not the best
The Guesthouse is a little out of the way - but we were able to catch a local bus to it. The reception was okay but not as friendly as elsewhere. The host cooked a curry for dinner which was nice but one small chicken thigh fillet between four of us was not enough. The limited access to hot water and a comfy area to lounge made the stay uncomfortable. I don't think the host's heart is in the business. The Satsuki Onsen was the highlight of the stay - and we wish we could have stayed there!

Mixed Feelings
The stay was alright, but the room wasn't totally clean and fresh. To shower you have to go to the public onsen, which wasn't so bad at all. The toilet is the public toilet of the cafe. No pick up and drop off. The buses drive twice a day, but are directly connected to the trail. It is manageable but you have to consider it. We are vegetarians and she only had chicken curry. With any other accommodation that wasn a problem at all.

The location of the Sansaro Cafe & Guesthouse was near the bus stop and convenient to transport to Hongu and Koguchi. The local onsen near Sansaro was ideal for the tired trekking legs after the hike! The dinner, curry chicken and rice, prepared by the host was yummy.

The guest room - (this is disgusting) on the bed there was no separate clean sheet (meaning we were sleeping in the previous nights blanket), there was no lock on the door. Bath - no bath/shower on the premises (very strange). We walked 10 minutes to a public Onsen (which was very good). Meals - the worst we had, a small curry offered. The meals were offered in a very shabby dining area. Breakfast was better. Location - a long way from the trail, as you know a bus trip is required. Reception- a lovely person, but nowhere near the warmth that we received at our other stays. The price we payed was ridiculously overpriced - the most we payed for the worst place. If I was running Kumano Travel, I would take this one off the list. It was extremely disappointing

The acccommodation is fine, but has some inconveniences. The host is kind and the meals are also fine. However, the accommodation is quite far from the trail start. You also have to use a public bath (not available in the morning). No lunch is provided an alternative lunch service in the area is limited.

A delightful place to stop. Was a little off the track so had to catch a local bus, but no biggie. We used the local onsen which was only a few minutes walk away and was fantastic. The rooms were basic but we slept really well and the meal was home cooked and delicious. Lunchbox was the best we had!! The owner was incredibly lovely and helpful.

A bit of a disappointment
Everything was as advertised - meal was supplied, room was clean, bath at public onsen etc. My low rating was more about the quality for the price (which was the most expensive place I stayed at, yet the lowest quality). Evening meal was very basic: curry and rice. No bath in-house, onsen was a relatively long walk (but very good). Host seemed fairly uninterested in guests.

Cute family run guesthouse in a town near Koguchi, awesome dog
I enjoyed my stay in Sansaro Cafe/Guesthouse! The family who runs it are all very friendly and kind, and the bed was the most comfortable bed I slept in on the entire Kumano Kudo, definitely a 10/5. They do not have baths for guests at the house, but give you a ticket to the nearby public bathhouse just down the road, and that was way better! It was fun to experience a non-touristy bathhouse and the open outdoor bath was so gorgous - I sat in it and watch the sun set and the fog roll over the mountains. Meals were simple but delicious and felt more like home cooking than any restaurant. And of course, Haru the dog was the best of company. The location is stunning - the town is so small and you are right out there in the fields, nestled in the mountains. Logistically, it's slightly less convenient than staying in Koguchi as the bus you need is infrequent and you can't start the next day's trek as early as you may want if you're worried about the climb (7:40ish would be the earliest). However it is still much better than having to go back to Hongu for the night as doing that requires taking the same bus, plus another after. I would absolutely stay here again!

Host with the most
We got to Koguchi long before the bus was due. There’s not much there and it was raining, so we had coffee and cheese toast at the friendly cafe, then decided to share a taxi with two fellow guests. It was about Y3-4,000 total I think. The room was good. No shower (which we knew), but my husband enjoyed the onsen. The food was really good. We had so much fun staying at this place. We had dinner and a few drinks with our fellow hikers and there were seemingly endless cyclists that kept turning up from their race. Our host fed them all and found beds, including the floor and at her friends house. They provided good entertainment for us, and I was impressed how well she managed us all.

Delightful
We immediately felt welcomed. The bath ticket for the local sento more than made up for the lack of showers at the guesthouse. It was lovely to soak in the outdoor bath and watch the stars come out. Dinner was curry, which was wholesome and filling. The lunch box we purchased was delicious. We stayed in the guestroom attached to the cafe, which had comfortable beds and felt private. We highly recommend this stay!

The accommodation is far from the kumano trail and requires buses. It was the most expensive accommodation of the trip by far. The bed sheets and towels smelled like humidity. There was one smelly shared toilet at the guesthouse. The basin was also shared and didnt have soap. There is no shower in the Cafe. Shower is at the Onsen, 5 min by foot. Meals were very scarce and simple. Time for dinner and breakfast was fixed and the owner didnt offer any flexibility. I wouldn't recommend this place for a stay.

Good but......
It's a good place, but don't have bathroom and that, for me it's very important. They give us a pass to the Onsen, the public Japanese bathroom of the town. The meals and the attention really good. It's important, there is a bus to Samsaro from Koguchi.

Friendly and helpful owner who runs this ex-cafe as a guesthouse. We stayed here the day we hiked to Koguchi. It takes a bus ride to get there from Koguchi, which makes it less convenient than staying at Koguchi itself. However, it's located within a quick walk from the Kanmaru bus stop. The bus stop has buses serving Koguchi, Hongu and Shingu, making the guesthouse a good option for people continuing on to other places. The guesthouse has no showers and they give you free tickets to a nearby onsen. That's a good enough alternative. The onsen has clean, modern facilities and has friendly staff. It's a 5-10 min walk, but you can still work out a sweat if walking in the hot sun. Go there towards the end of the day so you can enjoy a cooler walk back to the guesthouse.

The homestay location requires a car ride, but it's easy to find! The boss is very enthusiastic, and her dog seems to be called 'Spring', very obedient! We will give away hot spring tickets for the small town! Walking on the hot spring road with friends at night, there are stars, fields, and frogs chirping, it feels great!

Felt at Home with a Friendly Host & Dog
This stay truly felt like home. The host was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and their dog added a lovely touch of joy. It was also my first time experiencing an onsen — initially awkward, but I soon appreciated its relaxing comfort.

Peaceful and inviting places to stay
I love the laid-back vibe of Sansaro it has a gorgeous view over rice fields which stretch to the mountains. It’s a great place to enjoy the public baths, which are super clean, organized and relaxing. There are a couple of pools outdoors and some indoors. Look out to the mountains and recover from your hike!

Never mention no bathroom. Far from everywhere. Food really Sade (japonaise food is so wonderfull) 12000 is really too expensive compare even to Tokyo!! For you Kumano Travel = your price are really too expensive more than is Tokyo for a quality really low compare to japan standing. Moreover we all wat for week and months to get confirmation of our booking. With hours restriction... That is not possible. Our host was really welcoming and helpful. She presented a nourishing western-style meal for dinner and breakfast. The room was small but sufficient for a 1-night stay. Wonderful onsen & lovely stay
Needed to take a bus from Koguchi (unfortunately there were few bus timings so it was quite a long wait). Although we had to shower at the nearby Satsuki onsen, it was a wonderful onsen. Dinner was delicious though would have preferred a more local Japanese cuisine. It was also nice to meet Haru chan, Satoko's pet dog.

We arrived at Hoguchi Village at 2pm and kept calling the host. Nobody answered the call until 330pm. We had made arrangement for host’s son to pick us up the day before. However, when we were there, the host wanted us to take the bus as her car is too small for 4. This is a miscommunication on the pickup arrangement. Things need to improve on: - the toilet bowl is not clean n smells - Although the bedding is comfortable, it has musky smell. - overall cleanliness of the house can be better. Food: - dinner was substantial and generally good. We were served green curry. The gravy is fragrant but on the sweet side. - breakfast was toast with egg n salad. There is a friendly dog which everyone loves. Host was friendly.

Small house by side of busy road with modern community onsen 3 minutes away
Location is good in the sense that the home is 250 feet from the bus stop, but it is in the middle of nowhere by the side of two busy roads. No lovely village to explore. The host is warm and welcoming, she had put a note on the door welcoming us, with instructions on how to get to the community center where the onsen was. Room had western style bed with the most delicious duvet. Dinner was a generous Japanese curry, perfect after a long day. Breakfast was generous. The home very warm and comfortable, and the family dog was great company. Community center onsen very modern, with spa like facilties. In door chlorinated spa and outdoor non coordinated onsen.

Title: "Decent Stay with Basic Amenities, but Some Drawbacks
This accommodation is located slightly off the Kumano Kodo route and requires a bus ride to reach. Be aware that buses in this direction do not run every hour, which can sometimes be inconvenient. The room I stayed in had all the necessary basics—nothing luxurious, but functional. There is no shower in the building, but guests have free access to the local onsen, just a five-minute walk away. For me, this was a great opportunity to experience this local tradition, so I didn’t mind at all. The meals were quite standard compared to other places I stayed along the Kumano Kodo. The breakfast, in particular, felt insufficient, especially considering the demanding hike we had ahead that day. One downside was the room temperature at night. Without the air conditioning, it got very cold, but turning it on made the room warm quickly at the cost of the noisy hum of the unit. Neither option was ideal. Overall, it’s a decent place to stay if you manage your expectations, but there are some aspects that could be improved.

Good
It was a very different and neat experience compared to other guesthouses. The cafe was nice and warm and the host was kind and accommodating. She even offered to make us a bento box for lunch the next day at a very reasonable cost. We knew the space did not have a shower and the nearby onsen was wonderful. The bathroom in the guesthouse does not have a bidet. One recommendation we have for the host is to offer a larger portion for meals as the journey to Nachi from there is very difficult.

not the best option we can get around the area
This is the worst of all the accommodation that I stayed along the walks. There is only 2 buses that we can take from Koguchi to Kanmaru in the afternoon, similarly for the morning. No shuttle service if missed the bus or arrive too early. Meals were very simple (curry rice for dinner, 1 piece of bread and 1 egg for breakfast) not like others minshuku, where we get to have japanese set meals. The public bath is somewhat a good experience. However, after a long day, the need to walk in cold weather for another few hundred meters to have a good wash was not so encouraging. This will be the last option if want to stay close to Koguchi.

OK, not on par with other places available
Sansaro is a convenient location, off the bus route. We had to share a bathroom with another couple which wasn't bad, but just a bit awkward, as everyone wanted to brush teeth at the same time. There are no showers available, however, they do provide free entry to the local onsen, which was a 10 minute walk. The onsen is very nice, and was terrific, and anyone experiencing Kumano Kodo should go to all the onsen's available anyway, so no shower is not a big deal, but I feel they should be more open about that fact. The host is very sweet, and she even drove us to the Kumano Boat tour, which she did not have to do, we were planning on either walking or taking the bus, but she drove us with her very sweet dog. Sansaro was not as nice as the first two places we stayed (Aiwaso and Minshuku 3rd Place) so the level definitely dropped off,, and maybe we got spoiled. relatively though Sansaro was not a nice as some of the other places we stayed on our Kumano Kodo hike. We did have a terrific conversations with the other guests that we staying there, so overall the experience was still bery pleasant,.

Good for one night stop
We slept in the room inside the cafe, it was a bit tiny but overall ok. It rained a lot during the day and we were completely wet, and the host offered us a shoe dryer which was very appreciated! The food is ok, and we enjoyed the company of other guests and of the owner's dog! There are no showers and we got the tickets for the local onsen (we knew it), we initially thought that it was going to be annoying but in the end it was the best onsen experience of the entire trip, after such a rainy day! The place was clean and calm, with an outdoor small onsen.

Sansaro Café was not realy a cafe. Nobody goes there to drink coffee. It was a musician's living room. There was no shower in the house. We had to go 10 minutes to the public bath. Our bedroom was an adjoining room to the living room and not in the guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner were very simple. Overall we were disappointed with the accomodation. Disappointed
While our host was very nice, the accommodation was substandard for the price we paid. No shower is available at the property, but this is not mentioned on the website and we were only told this on arrival. Now I understand the inclusion of a ticket to the local public Onsen. The meals were enough, but average. The beds were uncomfortable with one appearing to be a mass of cushions put together, that kept drifting apart. The whole place was very cluttered and there were cockroaches in the toilet. Sorry to be so brutally honest, but I think it is important that you know.

7 km away from Koguchi trailhead, along an untrafficked walkable road. Perfectly fine option as little available in village. Accommodation adequate, though seems an add-on to the cafe that's open some days. Dinner and breakfast both on the light side; curry tasty, but the 'Western' breakfast not really enough for the upcoming day. The proprietor only just as available as she needs to be; serving food or answering questions, then quickly totally disappearing. No bath onsite, but free entry ticket to onsen a 10 minute walk away which is nice. Small market very nearby for lunch supplies. Wifi password is incorrect and needs to be sorted out. AM bus to Koguchi for day's walk to Nachi well-timed.

Nice place but far from the hiking route
As the title, the guest room is good for rest for hiking. The onsen is quite good. But the problem is far from the route. You should walk for more than an hour to be there or take bus , whereas there are not many bus choices.

Very Nice
Very nice owners. I would only comment on the having to walk to the baths. It was a bit much after a long day to walk to the baths. Also, bento is good, but a hot meal would be better after such long days.

We were bitten by insects overnight but we are unsure if they were bedbugs or just insects coming in from the open window that we opened for a little while. The curry was excellent. The onsen was incredible.

Sansaro
Room was okay for one night, very basic. Location was absolutely gorgeous apart from placement along the busier intersection in town. No bathing facilities available to us on the premises. Tickets to local onsen were included, five minutes walk. Host did her absolute best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Haru!! (dog)

Pleasant Stay in Beautiful Community
We enjoyed our stay at Sansaro Cafe and Guesthouse. We were greeted with kindness by the host and her family, and we were happy to be able to interact with the resident dog Hara. The accommodation is basic but met our needs just fine. The booking included a voucher for the neighborhood, public onsen which was lovely. The area is beautiful with gorgeous mountains surrounding the valley. The host accommodated my husband’s vegan diet without any problem. Thank you.

Not too good accommodation
Dinner and breakfast was too simple with respect to local standard. Not allowed to use bath and not allowed to enter kitchen. The location is at Kanmaru, along the Hongu - Shingu main road. It would be better to stay at Koguchi area if hiking the Ukegawa - Koguchi - Nachisan trail, so as not to be restricted by the bus timings betw Koguchi and Kanmaru.

A stop without more on the Kumano Kodo
Easy to access by bus. The quality-price ratio is not at its best. Due to lack of choice in the region, may be suitable for an overnight stop. Free access to the onsen may compensate for the lack of on-site showers. The house dog may be charming, but knowing that he sleeps on the chairs we would like to use before going to our futons is less attractive. Warm and available owner

Terrible option
The bad: the food, the location which was too far from Koguchi The worse: no bathroom in house (which is not handy after a full day walk along Kumano Kodo) even though there is access provided to the local onsen which is still a long walk from the house The worst: dirty, the bedsheets and pillows were absolutely unclean. Worse (and only bad) experience of the journey

Love the vibe of this guesthouse
Satoko-San brings a calming energy to her guesthouse and the vibe was just right to relax. We stayed in the guest room located in the cafe. It was large and the beds were very comfy (actual beds, not futons). Satoko-San made an amazing curry for dinner. We used the local onsen to bathe, which was a close walk and very nice. It wasn't much of a problem, but there were no on-site showers and the local store was closed by 5:30pm when we arrived, so I'd plan for snacks/beverages in Koguchi before arriving. We did a reiki healing session with Satoko-San and it was so lovely. Her dog Haru is also a lovely addition to the guesthouse.

A very nice stay
We were a little concerned at first because it is some distance of the trail and we arrived 3 hours before the bus. In the end we had a beautiful walk along the river and it only took 90 minutes. The host is very nice, the food is great and the Onsen is only a 5 minute walk. You can easily get an early morning bus back to the trail so highly recommended.

Something a little different!
Sansaro is a quirky place, full of interesting bits and pieces. Our host was generous and kind, and we felt very welcome. We slept really well in the comfortable beds and enjoyed the food, which was leaning more towards the western style. The bento box provided for lunch on the rugged Ogumotori-goe section was really good! (You book the bento the night before.) The host provided free passes to the local onsen, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We lolled in the outdoors part of the onsen area (women's side) and took in the view of sakura and mountains. It was stunning.

We were 3 adults in a very small room though we did know and agree to that in advance. There are no showers but you are a short walk to the onsen which is good. Lovely room to relax in and lovely food. We did a restorative yoga session in the evening before bed which was a great way to end the day. The bus is fine but limited times.

Stayed in the cafe guesthouse. It's in an area that's more secluded but I liked that. Given a pass to go to the onsen for a bath which I appreciated after days of hiking, and was able to catch some lovely scenery while soaking myself in the onsen. Bus stop is near by the buses aren't very frequent so you may time your hike!

Such a cute and quirky little family-run guesthouse with such a warm and welcoming host. The delicious vegetarian food and spectacular public onsen on the backdrop of the mountains were highlights. Sansaro was great. We stayed for two days and enjoyed it very much. Our host was extremely helpful and friendly. We had no difficult using the Onsen instead of a bath. It's an enjoyable, short walk to it, and one of the nicest Onsen's I've been in. The bedroom is simple, but clean and had everything we needed. The meals were carefully prepared and tasty. If you're happy with simple but good, Sansaro is perfect.

Adequate
This place is a bit off course, and it was a decent wait for a bus at the end of our day’s walk. Given the accommodation shortage at this part of the nakahechi route it’s an ok option, but it isn’t as good as the other places we stayed in terms of food and reception. You have to bath at a nearby public Onsen, which was actually very nice, but a bit weird not to be able to shower at the guesthouse.

Cute place
The room is quite basic but comfortable enough. It is a bummer that there is no showers in the café and you have to use either the public onsen or the owners bathroom, which is a bit awkward... The onsen was closed the day of our stay so we had to use the bath at the owners house, which is clearly not prepared for guests. Anyway, the owner Ms Uzawa was very nice, same as her family! The food she prepared for us was tasty and we were satisfied with it. The location of the café is really pretty too, at the entrance of the valley.

Chill-vibe place
We stayed in the cafe room, which is basically a room right next to the main hall of the cafe. Luckily we were the only one the night so the place was very relaxing and chill. The food was simple but good, both for dinner and breakfast. The only negative part is that there is no "real" bathroom for the shower. If the onsen nearby is closed, you have to use the shower of the host. The place in general is very close to the bus stop to go back to the Kumano trail or the city, in the night is very relaxing with the noises of nature surrounding you.

Sansaro Cafe was a bit further away from where I wanted to be staying as I was walking the Kumano Kodo, and there were a very limited number of buses running there. At first, we were a bit worried how to reach Sansaro Cafe from the Kumano Kodo trail, but the trip by bus went smoothly (despite the reduced frequency). This eclectic place was an ok stop on the hike but it’s 7.5 km from the Kumano trail. Only two buses at the end of the day so if you finish early you’re either adding the distance to you day or waiting at the covered stop. There was a note for arranging an early pick up but all our communications went unanswered. ( email and FB). The public onsen that you get to use free was beautiful.

We were soggy and tired when we arrived at Sansaro, after hiking for 5-6 hours in the rain. Great experience
The guesthouse is located in a remote village. You'll need to take a bus to arrive there. Once you arrive, you would find you are in a place you never expect. It's so beautiful. The valley, the river, the forest up in the mountain, the big sky, the quiet. It gave us a sense of wholeness. No wonder the owner, a yoga teacher, would have chosen to relocate there. She was so kind and so helpful. We couldn't believe the trip would took us there. We enjoyed it so much.

We had a great stay here thanks to Satoko and her family’s warm reception! Our room was very welcoming with great bedding. There’s a hallway sink to use for cleaning your face though there’s not a shower for guests at the location. The wonderful work-around though is that Satoko gives a ticket to the nearby onsen where you can shower and get a nice soak after being on the trail. There were lots of snacks and drinks available in the cafe. We were lucky to experience a live music performance in the cafe the night we were there that was a highlight of the trip! She also packed a lunch for us for our continued journey on the trail.

Incredible meals in a beautiful backdrop
Beautiful little spot that is a short bus ride away from Koguchi. The dinner bento that Satoko-san provided for us were absolutely delicious and she also gave us the option of paying a bit extra for bento boxes the next day for lunch as well, which was quite convenient as lunch on this section of the trail can be a bit difficult to find. She also has a very cute dog Haru-chan. Four stars for the location and bath situation only because it technically is not in Koguchi, it is the neighboring town Kanmaru, so it does require taking a bus and there are only two buses per day (but the hike from Ukegawa to Koguchi is the shortest leg so making it to the bus on time is probably not an issue for most people). And because in order to shower you have to walk to the onsen in town which also is close (5 min walk), there is no shower in the building. Overall would not hesitate to stay here again.

Enjoy my last day of the walk
Unfortunately the onsen was closed on Monday and I couldn´t enjoy it. However I really appreciate the welcome, the food and truly enjoyed sleeping with the sound of frogs. Thanks for opening your house and your cafe. That night made my walking experience finishing it with a quiet and relax atmosfere. I had to confess I was a bit nervous with this reservation because it is located a bit off from Koguchi. However, since I made some changes to my plan, the cafe turned out to be in the right place and made my 5th day of the walk a lot more relax.

Friendly host
After hiking all day we had a nice stay at Sansaro Guesthouse. The owner was very friendly and made us tasty dinner und breakfast. The guestroom had only two beds and nothing more in it but that was okay for us. Wouldn't recommend to people with a dog allergie because the owner owns a dog that also got into our room. We already knew that we couldn't use a shower in the accomondation so we had to go to the local onsen. We got a voucher for that. The onsen was great and we would highly recommend going there. We had to use the "public" toilet at the Cafe. For that we always had to go through the cafe. So there wasn't a lot of privacy. Still a nice stay.

We hiked from Ukegawa to Koguchi and upon arrival in Koguchi we were uncertain which busstop we should get off at to get to Sansaro. We noticed the detail later at the busstop n Koguchi. It would help if it were indicated on the voucher which bus stop visitors should get off at (from Koguchi). The guesthouse is close to the bus stop. The guesthouse is next to a public road that was quite the night we stayed over. The Onsen is about 10 minutes walk from Sansaro. The staff was friendly and dinner and breakfast was good.

It appeared the lady owner (who was away) left all the work for her young son (who, I might add, did a great job under trying circumstances). He was kind enough to pick us up at the end of our daily walk, and also take us to a nearby Onsen for some R&R. The cafe accommodation room was very basic, but had the necessities of lighting and air conditioning. Even though we had our own tap basin and toilet, there was no shower. Breakfast was a sandwich, nice coffee, and he prepared for us a lunchbox. Overall, we feel that he did the best job possible under the circumstances, having to look after 5 pilgrims on his own.

The house has no baths but you re provided with a voucher to a close by Onsen- which is just perfect after a full day of hiking. As there was no accommodation available in Koguchi, I luckily found this nice option in nearby Kanmaru. Not ideal setup
This was a bit unusual in the setup, though we appreciated the access to the onsen and being driven there after a very long/cold day spent hiking in the rain. We tried to call/email to get collected from the end point that day, but didn't manage to get through so had to wait some time for a bus. The room is in the cafe, is very small, least favourite place during the trek. Toilet is the cafe toilet, no facilities on site for having a wash, other than the cafe toilet washbasin for rinsing your face. Food was good.

A nice house with a big clean room in Japanese style
A nice house with a big clean room in Japanese style, the bath is a public bath located a few 100 meters away with both an indoor and outdoor bath with a beautiful mountain view. The hostess was very helpful and very good at English. The food was ordinary but in large quantities.

We enjoyed our accomodation at Sansaro cafe and the food was spectacular. We also loved the comfy feel of the place and the puppy Haru was beautiful. Thank you for having us and for your hospitality. It was a little further out from the walk and the bus is quite infrequent. The bath was a small walk but very nice.

Great spot and wonderful host
Fukami is a lovely and welcoming host and a great cook! Her home style cooking was a real treat. You eat dnner in the cafe with the other guests and it is a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. We chose this spot as we couldn't get accommodation in Koguchi, it is a 10 minute drive away. Fukami will come and pick you up if needed and then it was an easy bus trip back to Koguchi for us to resume our walk the next day. You could also use this spot as a base to get a bus to Shingu or the river boats. We stayed in a bedroom within the cafe which was great, or you can stay in a room in the adjacent house which might be a better option if you were staying a few nights so you arent disturbed by the lunch time cafe business.

Wasnt aware that the location was so far out. Arrived on a weekend where buses are infrequent. Luckily had a stranger stopped by and helped called owner as i have no roaming line. Also, i feel it is overpriced for the room. Should readjust the price, please have a look at takahara kiri no sato rooms.

This is not a great place to stay and is not in line with the standards and atmosphere of the other accommodation and experiences we had on the Kumano Kodo. The room is dusty and a bit musty. It is also a bit crowded and feels as if it could use a good clean. The meals here were also not very good - and no where near the style or standard of our other places. We were also a bit put off by the hosts barking dog which was a bit off putting when we arrived. What was great was the nearby Onsen which we loved. A note though - this host does not provide lunch and we were told to get lunch things at a nearby small shop but there really wasn't any suitable lunch things available there. As a consequence we did the last, very long and hard day with not a proper lunch. I wouldn't advice people stay here as it's not so nice and it's not ideal not to have lunch.

This minshuku is a bit off the way for the Kumano Kodo hiker's (one needs to take a bus from the end of the trail near Koguchi all the way to the Kanmura bus loop) but totally worth the detour. We had some of the best experiences for service, relaxation, onsen, and overall contact with the host here. The food at the cafe was very good, with a more occidental breakfast and a more traditional japanese dinner. The guestroom was large, clean, well-equipped with AC and a little couch, and free coffee and tea were provided.

We enjoyed our stay in the funky cafe room. There’s an artsy, laid back, spiritual atmosphere and the family here is very accommodating. We had delicious meals! Get the bento box. Was the best we had. The beds were cozy and the sleep was good and quiet. The Onsen included in our stay was beautiful. The host picked us up at the bus stop as the bus schedule was slim.

The owner was friendly and she directly invited us to an event she organized. However we felt she was more occupied by the said event rather than taking enough time for our check-in. We were quite disappointed with the dinner, which was a standard vegetarian bento box (compared to other minshukus on the trail which provided delicious home cooked Japanese food). However the breakfast was good! The public onsen is really great (5min walking distance). Be aware that the guesthouse is far away from Koguchi (15-20min by bus).

Good alternative to staying in Koguchi
Small but serviceable room. A delight to go to the onsen, just a short walk away. Dinner and breakfast simple but delicious. We had planned to stay in Koguchi but there was no space in those accommodations - this provided a good alternative, and the bus system was quite easy to master to get to Kanmaru. This was an excellent place to stay where the host introduced us to the delights of okonomiyaki for our evening meal. We had a lovely reviving and long soak in the municipal hot tubs before a peaceful night and a solid breakfast before the morning's steep walk up the mountain. Although the host's cuisine is not vegetarian she put together an excellent vegetarian lunchbox for us at short notice when the village shop had already shut. Thank you.

Unusual place
If you have to stay here you will survive but if you have any way to stay elsewhere do that. The location was inconvenient requiring a 20 minute bus from Koguchi. No bathroom so had a 10 minute walk to the local public onsen, which was fabulous. Toilet is shared with some guests staying in the annexe. The meal was tasty and freshly prepared. Our room had two beds which i had no difficulty sleeping in as I was completely exhausted from the walk. It all had an air of backpacker hostel about it - completely serviceable but the price was daylight robbery.

This is the only place we think it should not be recommended by you. Owner is nice and the onsen close by is fantastic. However the house and restaurant area is not very clean, no good toilet (place to wash hands or brush teeth). The room was not very clean and the bed had no sheets. Also not the best location as there is only 2 buses to Koguchi in the morning and we would have liked to start trek earlier.

Sansaro Cafe review
This house is placed in the same building of Sansaro Cafe, my room in particular was attached to the main hall. In the house are present only toilets so if you need to take a shower you can go at the near Onsen (5 minutes from the cafe) that was a really good experience. The meal served was ordered from the outside but really really good, probably one of the best that I eat during Kumano. The only problem that I found was that my room was a little bit noise with the main hall near.

1 night at Sansaro
The host was very friendly and helpful. The nearby Satsuki Onsen was a real treat, although it's a bit inconvenient not being able to shower or bathe onsite. The room was comfortable. It was a bit awkward having meals as a solo traveler there?I felt very much like I was in the family's space when I had dinner at a table behind theirs while they had their dinner. I'm not sure how that could be remedied. Maybe better for couples or groups. Also, the host advertised paid rides in her car to nearby sites but was not available to give them during my stay.

Adorable cafe under a rainbow in the valley
Everything we needed. A delicious, hearty, family meal was a welcome change to what we had been served up to this point in the hike. The owner was memorably friendly with an unwavering eagerness to help. While the onsen was not on-site, it was just a short walk away and included with the stay; we highly recommend it, it was one of the best we experienced in Japan. Stunning views of the surrounding mountains whilst in the outdoor onsen during an afternoon drizzle was spectacular. Thank you very much for sharing your home with us! Can be hard to get to, but well worth the bus ride
The owners are a young couple that are very nice. I interacted the most with the lady who ran the guest room. She speaks good English as well. Dinner was good, and was delivered from another place. Breakfast was made in house and was delicious. It can be hard to get there, since you have to take a bus, but the owner is willing to pick you up if she isn’t busy working there. The location is beautiful and quiet. There isn’t a bath at the guesthose/cafe, but you receive a free ticket for the nearby onsen, which is excellent. Overall I really enjoyed my time there, and it was nice chatting to the owners.

Quirky Guesthouse and Cafe
Sansaro comprises a modest guesthouse and cafe a short bus ride from Koguchi. If you plan to stay overnight in this area Sansaro is a viable option as accommodation in Koguchi is very limited. The accommodation consists of a couple of rooms in their house adjoining the small cafe and one room in the cafe itself. The nearby public onsen was a highlight. The guesthouse lady kindly dropped us off there and we walked back. The meals are adequate. One downside is that they do not offer a bento lunch to have on the trail the next day. Luckily we were able to scratch together enough provisions from the only nearby shop. Overall Sansaro was OK. We were back in Koguchi by bus and on our way on the trail in good time.

The reception at this location is horrible, she is stand-offish, unhelpful, and rude. Its my opinion that she lucky that her location is the only one available around. The room had ants in it, She doesn't show any hospitality towards helping her guests with directions or check in. The food and space is far below the standard for the rate. In my opinion, this place should be removed from being available to Kumano travel.

Lovely friendly host with a fantastic onsen nearby
Fukami was a lovely host, she speaks very good English and spoke with us whilst we had breakfast before we set off on the toughest day of our hike. She very kindly gave us her business card and told us to just call her if we wanted her to pick us up halfway through if it was too tough/we ran into trouble! She is very welcoming and her dog, Haru, is so cute. Fukami was out during the evening we were staying so we didn't get to try her cooking for dinner, instead she arranged a cold bento box. As part of the stay we were given tickets to the nearby local onsen. They were the best baths we went to during our time in Japan and we really enjoyed being able to experience somewhere locals frequent. If you stay here, don't miss out on the onsen!

Despite other places we visited in Kumano Kodo, we were very dissapointed with this one. First, Cafe Sansaro offers a free ticket to an Onsen because they do not have bathroom for guests. The dinner was prepared 2h before the eating time because the owner had to go shopping and when we ate it it was completely cold. The breakfast was also quite poor. The room size is ok in futton bed but the closets are full of stuff from the owner. It is located 8km from Koguchi, you can either take a bus (470Y) or walk about 2h (however, on car road). This was by far our worst stay in Kumano Kodo. I do not recommend this place if you can get something else!

Sansaro Guesthouse was great - very friendly owner (who spoke English), a small but comfortable room, delicious dinner and breakfast in the cafe next to the guesthouse and a free ticket to the village onsen which was excellent. Beautiful countryside location & Wonderful people
Sansaro Cafe & Guesthouse was our accommodation after we completed the Kogumotori-goe portion of the Kumano Kodo trail. When we got off the bus at Kammaru we were blown away by how beautiful this valley was in the setting sun. The rooms are Japanese style with cozy futtons and tatami mats. It is exactly as pictured on the Kumano Travel website. The food was fantastic! Home-cooked, vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Ms. Uzawa and her family were very kind. We ate dinner together and we took turns playing music together in the cafe while drinking tea in the evening. Our host drove us to one of her favourite spots along the river and our host's friends drove us to Shingu city when the trail was washed out after the typhoon. It was so nice to visit a spot that had an enchanting atmosphere and really spend time with the people that lived there. How to get there: After you finish the Kogumotori-goe, make your way to Kowase Kumano Kodo (Co-ordinates: 33°45'51.794399""N 135°50'45.488""E). There should be a little waiting area and a bus stop. Take the bus to Kanmaru. It'll be a 10-15 minute ride. When you get off at the bus stop the Cafe should be across the street on your right. Make sure you check the bus schedule to know when the last bus is. Go to the Kumano Kodo travel website, go to the bus timetables and select the one that mentions Koguchi. Look at the times between Kowase and Kanmaru. Best to check with the Kumano Kodo travel staff when you first arrive in the Kumano Kodo area.

Thank you for your kindness
When we arrived at Sansaro cafe, we were much later than our indicated check in time which was concerning for the host. Pro tip, this accommodation is actually 6.7 km from Koguchi, where you will likely be finishing from the Kumano Kodo trail for that day. The last bus from Koguchi tokanmaru, the stop where the accommodation is, is at about 18:05. We missed it by 30 minutes, so my advice is unless you are okay with walking another 6+ km after hiking all day, try to make it for the last bus. We were lucky, and were able to hitch a ride from a kind local truck driver. Once we arrived, the host was a lovely friendly lady, who despite our late arrival, made us a nice warm ramen dinner. She also has a very very cute dog, Haru!!! My only advice for this website, is to include her phone number online or in email. When we missed the last bus, we wanted to call her to notify of our late arrival. We could not find any phone number online for Sansaro cafe. Thank you for everything, we appreciate your kindness and hospitality.

Great staff and experience - could use a shower on-site
This little guesthouse may have been my favourite stay along this route, though that may be odd since there are a few things that count against it. While it is not centrally located on the Kumano Kodo trailhead and requires a bus to get there, I really liked the little town that it was situated in. It was really quiet, relaxing and had beautiful views of the mountains and the rice fields. I also really liked the building itself. The cafe side was really cute and cozy and the house was lovely and the bed was probably the most comfortable Japanese futon I slept on during my trek. The non-buckwheat pillows were a godsend after a few of other traditional guesthouses. I'm conflicted when it comes to the baths and the meals. Though I do think there should be a shower or bath on-site so you can bath in the evening or in the morning, I really enjoyed the onsen nearby. It was beautiful with nice views of the mountains and very relaxing. I think only two other people were there while I was there, so it was nice to bath solo. I also appreciated that the guesthouse provided a free ticket. The meals were probably middle of the pack as far as the places I've stayed, but the staff and her family were all very pleasant. I did sort of feel like the guests were a bit of an afterthought, but I won't hold that against them as it could have been for any number of reasons on this particular night. Overall, I would recommend this spot and would gladly stay here again.

The meals were very tasty and we were happy to accept the offer for second helpings. Our host even gave us a ride in the morning. Many thanks for such a great experience!

A Bridge Too Far
We arrived at the end of the walk and were advised to walk another few km in the wrong direction to our guesthouse. No one's fault but our own. We were advised the wrong time for a bus so had a long wait. We arrived at the Guesthouse cafe which was setting up for a musical performance. Our room was clearly used for householders at other times. This was the only place where we had insects and walls/windows needed cleaning. Because of the music in the cafe, we had dinner in our room. The private club onsen was impeccably clean and in an idyllic indoor/outdoor design. Only problem is that it was a 10 minute walk from the guesthouse. While we had a pleasant stay, we would not have chosen this place in hindsight based on its remoteness from the Kumano Kodo route. We had to ride another bus for 15 minutes plus to get back on track.

Super guesthouse at an amazing spot!
Very serene environment in the middle between some great mountains and next to a very nice river. Spotted some stone hawks when setting on the river side. Great to see the fisherman doing there thing up there. Awesome from this guesthouse is that the host speaks very well english and cooks you a great meal.
