Where the Pilgrimage Begins

We established SEN.RETREAT as a safe and reliable accommodation network for pilgrims walking the sacred Kumano Kodo trails. Currently, we operate three strategically located guesthouses in Takijiri, Takahara, and Chikatsuyu, welcoming travelers from around the world.

SEN.RETREAT addresses critical regional challenges including population decline and the shortage of accommodation providers and successors in local communities. Our mission is to ensure that the environment for walking the Kumano Kodo trails is preserved for future generations.

To achieve sustainable operations, we operate as unmanned accommodations without on-site reception desks or permanent caretakers. This innovative approach allows us to maintain consistent service while adapting to the unique needs of rural communities.

Together with our dedicated staff from various regions, we are committed to providing comfortable and memorable experiences for our guests while preserving and passing down the legacy of the Kumano Kodo to future generations.

Vegetarianism and gluten free foods are not common in the Japanese countryside. Please double-check the meal options that are possible with each service provider to make sure that it meets your needs.

FISH STOCK: Often being able to eat trace amounts of the ubiquitous Katsuo Dashi (fish stock) makes it easier to find vegetarian options.

GLUTEN: For those who are not intorelant to gluten or Celiac then choosing Gluten Free "With Miso and Soy Sauce" will increase your options.
