Cozy Cottage with Super View
Suzushiro is a cozy cottage in Takahara owned by the young Kashiwagi family. The views from the facility and expansive deck are fantastic. There is a bedroom, sitting room, loft, mini-kitchen, toilet, and bath.
For the meals plan, supper is a Japanese style bento delivered to the accommodation (18:30~19:00), breakfast is western style also delivered (8:00~8:30), and the lunch box is supplied by a local shop (needed to be picked up).

Great Guesthouse in Takahara!
The views from the guesthouse are beautiful and the meals were delicious. Our host was friendly and helpful. One of our favorite stays in the Kumano Kodo.

Perfect location just down the hill from a rest stop. Best hot chocolate in all of Japan. The meals were 5 star hotel quality. There is a patio. Deck with a table and chairs to relax outdoors. The outdoor slippers are very tiny. The clothes washer was a life saver and I just hung my clothes to dry upstairs were the ceiling fan is. The host stocks the fridge with beer and other beverages. His English language skills are beyond just perfect. One word of advice. When he says check out is a ten minute walk uphill....this guy is in Olympia fitness condition so triple the time. You will have to walk up the hill no matter what as it's part of the Kumano Kodo trail...but for me it was 30 minutes. 😂. The bath tub is very deep and the water a perfect temperature. Full kitchen available but honestly the host meals are much better than most people can cook themselves. Amazing sky full of bright stars. Be ready for an adventure of your life. The hike is peaceful and I think religious by nature.

Fantastic stay

Wonderful private house
This was a highlight. It was lovely to have the privacy of an entire house to ourselves. Our host was very welcoming and cooked delicious food. The house was clean and very comfortable. The view is magnificent. We wanted to stay longer! I highly recommend Suzushiro.

Outstanding stay

So relaxing
After the steep uphill climb, it was so nice to arrive at the cabin with all amenities you could want. We were greeted by the owner who showed us around. The bath is modern and amazing (and I do not take baths). It has a washing machine, too. He brought us a multi-course dinner that was delicious and one best our entire trip. The futons had extra padding and were more comfortable than a western bed. Would love to stay again.

Small and cozy
The cottage was like a tiny home that comes with a kitchen. At night we saw starry night from the patio. The owner was dedicated serving lunch and breakfast. Not only were the food delicious but the presentations were nicely done.

Our favorite stay on the Kumano Kodo
A wonderful stay that was our favorite on the Nakahechi. The soft-spoken host, Mahito, has hit on a perfect balancing act with this house, which acted for us as an introduction to Japanese-style accommodation while still having a western feel with familiar creature comforts. The house is all yours, and is set back from the village, with a stunning view of the mountains from the front deck. Dinner was delicious, kaiseki style with familiar favorites (soba, tempura, etc.) and boar hot pot. A great night’s sleep on comfortable futons left us feeling motivated for four more days of hiking.

Lovely cottage, great for vegans
We absolutely loved our stay here and will treasure the memory forever. It's a private cottage. Communication with the host for check in/out and meal delivery was very easy. The space was well equipped with everything we needed for the night, including a helpful guidebook for the area which helped us identify some of the flora and fauna we'd seen. The WiFi was good. The deck offered such a spectacular view, it was really incredible and I've never stayed anywhere like it. We ordered vegan (vegetarian type E) meals, and they were fantastic, really exceeded our expectations. I would definitely recommend it to other vegans on the trails. Our evening meal was a bento box including tempura and delicious vegetables, plus rice and a kind of mushroom hotpot. It was great. Breakfast was salad sandwiches. The bread was tasty, but I would have enjoyed something with tofu or more protein for the day ahead. Our packed lunch contained rice, mock meat, potatoes, and more. Everything was so well seasoned, nothing bland at all. I'll happily stay here again if I return to the Kumano Kodo.

What a gem!!
Honestly, I can't give Suzushiro a higher recommendation. The location is excellent (just off the trail), the cottage has everything you need (including a self-filling, self-heating soaking tub), and the views are INCREDIBLE. The host is fantastic, the food was amazing - this was seriously the best place I stayed on the entire Kumano Kodo.

Truly a magical place
Our night at Suzushiro was, hands down, the most magical and pleasant along the Kumano Kodo. There is nothing like having your own cottage in an idyllic place for a night, enjoying dinner as you play some jazz, and outside, the rain moistens the mountains and the bamboo grooves. Everything about this place was perfect: from the reception process to the view, from the dinner to all the house amenities (which included a well-tuned guitar); no detail was missing, and everything was meticulously thought of. Even the fridge had a smart assortment of drinks ready for us. If you are considering a place to stay during your Kumano Kodo hike (or otherwise), do yourself a favour and stay here.

A wonderful stay
This may possibly have been the best accommodation we stayed at during our trip to Japan. Check-in was easy and clear. The guesthouse is spacious, with a wonderful view both in the evening when we arrived and during the morning mists. The food was absolutely delicious, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our host was gracious and welcoming. We were able to use the washing machine, which was welcome after a steep hike. We whole-heartedly recommend guesthouse Suzushiro to any travelers!

If I Could Give 6 Stars, I Would!!
We absolutely loved Suzushiro! We felt so welcomed from the moment we walked in the door and called our host to check in. The host has really made this cabin so welcoming, from the leg massager to the beer & wine available for purchase in the refrigerator. We arrived on a hot summer day and loved relaxing in the hammock, and enjoying a cold beer on the deck. The dinner, breakfast, and lunch box were absolutely delicious, and our host was so kind. His father even brought us fresh picked blueberries in the morning. What a treat! I would hike the Kumano Kodo again just to stay here. I wish I remembered our host's name, but I would just like to say THANK YOU!! :)

Absolute gem
The cottage is exceptional, after our walk we arrived at this beautiful little cottage. Very easy to check in and greeted by our host who later bought an amazing dinner, there are tea and organic coffee and also a fridge to buy beer, wine or sake. Possibly the best place I've ever stayed
As the title says. This was a really lovely rental house. The location was incredibly convenient for the Kumano Kodo hike, and the views were absolutely stunning. The bed was a traditional Japanese futon and very comfortable. The host was very kind and cheerful and dinner, breakfast and the lunch bento box were all delicious!

Fabulous place to stay.
I tell everyone to stay at Susushiro for TWO nights to recover their energy and visit the village. It was very beautiful, the scenery and the accommodation. We were so comfortable and were able to wash and dry our clothes and shoes because we got caught in a heavy one-hour-long rain storm. We slept with no ac on and listened to the sounds of cicadas during the night. It was heaven.

This is a lovely cabin type accommodation with fantastic views and good, modern facilities. Ideal for a solo traveller or couple. The friendly service and great food was appreciated. Only minor issue was that having specified vegetarian food the bento lunch box contained meat.

Stayed one night in november after the first day of small hike on Kumano Kodo ( Takijirii to Takahara). Great place, the best accommodation we had in 3 weeks in Japan. It is really close to the main road so no need to worry about that at all. less than 5 min walk. The owner and chef is so friendly and talented. He cooked WONDERFUL FOOD. Really worth going there just for the food and views even if you dont do the kumano kodo walk! Appreciated the easy use of bath. Everything top quality, the cabin feels comfy and nice, with great views on the valley, birds, and sunset. Nice terrasse as well. Good futons bed. Good coffee and tea. Bonus : Can listen to music using Bluetooth speaker.

Beautiful experience
We very much enjoyed the stay at Suzushiro rental house. A warm and personal reception was followed by one of our best meals during our pilgrimage, served by our host in the cottage. The cottage is large enough and very cosy. The misty morning was wonderful. The lunch box, which was delivered by another supplier, could be improved a lot.

We loved our stay here. The cottage was modern and comfortable, with a wonderful view down into the valley. Dinner and breakfast, delivered to our cottage, was delicious. Our host was outstandingly friendly and welcoming. He even gave us a lift to Chikatsuyu in his own car (a one-hour round trip) and arranged an early check-in there when I was unwell and unable to walk that day.

Highly recommended on all accounts. All comforts had been thought of and made available. We arrived an hour before check in and walked up the road to a great cafe called Meguru that made wonderful home made cakes. Our best stay during our visit to Kumano Kodo. Mahito-san and Sakura-san were very friendly - they explained the facilities in the home, cooked amazing dinner and breakfast meals, and introduced the town to us (do stop by at Meguru for some cake!). The cottage is wonderful - modern and homey. Amazing views, well-equipped, we felt right at home! Highly recommended to anyone!

Relaxing stay!!

Our stay was wonderful. The house is so stylish, hip but traditional Japanese. A real dream home on a mini scale. Our son loved the loft. Fantastic House on the Mountain
The stay at Suzushiro was one of the best experiences in our 10 days in Japan. Food was amazing. The house has everything you would need. The do it yourself coffee in the morning was great. Our favorite stay in Japan!
This place was incredible. Everything from the bedroom to the bathroom to the hammock was excellent. The host was fantastic, too, and made an excellent dinner for us in the cabin. My only regret is that we did not spend more nights here. It was easily our favorite accommodation of our two weeks in Japan.

We only spent one night here but this little house is something special. It is in an amazing location on the side of the mountain and the view over the valley is awesome. The service is second to none and the home cooked meals we had for dinner and breakfast were amazing. Even the bento they gave us was just as good. If you are going through this little village you have to stay the night at Suzushiro rental house.

The best place ever during our 1 month trip in Japan. The place is amazing, the view is amazing, the Kashiwagi family is amazing and the food is incredible. Very important: do not have a snack before the dinner if you want to taste everything from the multi-crazy bento boxes. Have a beer only for aperitif !

The Best Accommodation on Our Trip
My husband and I agree completely: Suzushiro was hands down our favorite accommodation in Japan. Sakura and her whole family are so warm and welcoming. The village of Takahara is tiny and the views are breathtaking, especially when a little bit of fog rolls in. The cottage is perfectly sized for two people, extremely comfortable and very well appointed. I had the best night of sleep during our whole trip here. And the food! Our dinner was a feast, presented beautifully and one of our favorite meals while in Japan. But really, the best part was meeting Sakura, her husband, and their adorable children. We truly enjoyed our conversations with them and felt completely taken care of. We continued on the Kumano Kodo the next morning and were so sad to leave our little bit of heaven. I highly recommend booking Suzushiro for a couple days if you have the time.

Breathtaking Panorama View
The location of the guesthouse has a breathtaking panorama view on the mountains. Sunrise in the morning really looked like from fairytales. Perfect! From the facilities which are new and convenient to the amazing view you get, everything was just spot on! It was great to have a nice patio where to have a drink and lay on the hammock. Service was also perfect with nice attentions such as tea upon arrival and being very considerate when bringing breakfast and setting up for dinner. The only negative incould think of is that even though everything was perfect and we were fully satisfied it's a case - as for all accommodation on the kumano kodo trail - of an accommodation being grossly overpriced.

A lovely place to stay and a warm welcome.
We really enjoyed staying here. It's a lovely, comfortable house ideal for two. Our host Mahito was very welcoming and supplied us with a wonderful dinner and then breakfast. One of us has some food allergies and the meals were presented with this in mind, which was much appreciated. We met Sakura the next day and the whole family were great hosts. Highly recommended.

Wonderful stay at Suzushiro
We had a wonderful stay at Suzushiro after a hard three hours of walking. The host was very helpful accompanied us to the house to explain everything. The house is beautifully arranged with lots of attention to detail - for example I really appreciated the environmentally friendly and un-perfumed bathing products, and the cotton bedcovers. The house has a beautiful view and we kept the windows open to enjoy the mountain air. The big surprise was how great the food was. I thought a lunch-box dinner might not be substantial enough, but there was not only more than enough food, but the host was a fantastic cook and we enjoyed every bite. The coffee provided for breakfast was also excellent and the lunch box we picked up on the way was perfect for our walk.

An unbelievable place
Suzushiro is just so perfect - we had a rough and wet hike from Takijiri-Oji so it was just great that we had a beautiful house to come to. The hosts are friendly and hospitable. We love to wake up in the morning to clean air and quietness the place offers. Both meals are great too!

One of the best places to stay along Kumano Kodo
We absolutely enjoyed our stay in the cozy rental house. The house has everything we needed and more. We enjoyed spending time on the deck watching the wonderful sunset and superb bento dinner that the owner had prepared. Sweet memory which is the highlight of our journey through Kumano Kodo. I long to return for a longer retreat.

Suzushiro was absolutely perfect
We arrived and were greeted with a warm welcome and a cup of tea, then after we checked in and spent a little time chatting to our lovely hosts they showed us to the guest house. It was beautiful, comfortable and very well equipped. And then the food - it was wonderful too. I'll definitely be recommending it to family and friends - I just wish we could have stayed longer.

Excellent Stay with Everything Beyond Our Expectation
We spent ""two years"" here :) - The last day of 2017 and the first day of 2018. It was a wonderful experience for us to live in this cozy cottage. We could not image a better one. Everything inside and outside is so peaceful and fantastic. Before coming to Kumano Kodo, we thought that we may be hungry because Japanese food is very delicious but little. However, we enjoyed such a unbelievable dinner as well as the breakfast. And don't forget to explore the Jazz collections that they prepared and just enjoy the living here. It was a pitty that we missed the New Year Celebration because we slept too early as it is too comfortable to stay here. Thanks for leaving us this incredible memory.

Real hospitality
We were greeted at the hosts house with warm tea and a chat about the day’s walk. Our hosts gave us good advice about the route before showing us to the house, which was cosy, clean and well furnished. The view was amazing, the beds were comfortable and the meals were all tasty, local, fresh and satisfying. We loved our stay here and will definitely come back if we get the opportunity.

Best place we stayed
Suzushiro is easily the best place we stayed in the Tanabe region. The accommodation was charming and had a very nice bathing area, the host was exceptionally kind and well mannered, and the food was absolutely amazing. The coffee that was available in the guest house was the best coffee I had while staying in Japan. I highly recommend staying here!

Superb first night to start the hike!
Mahito-san was a very good host and an excellent chef as well. Loved everything about the stay. Food was amazing. The view from the cottage was stunning as well. All in all will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a stay in Takahara. Don't forget to check out the jazz music collection as well!

The best Guesthouse in Japan!
As the title indicates this is the best guesthouse we have stayed in for the last two weeks. The owners were the friendliest people we met and spoke very good English. The guesthouse itself is a self contained, private, romantic cottage with modern fixtures. The guesthouse is immaculately clean and has the most amazing view over the valley. The food served served was the best we had in Japan (the beef hot dish was to die for and my wife wants to thank you wholeheartedly for the amazing ham sandwich for breakfast!). We wished we could have taken this guesthouse and the owners with us everywhere! A must stay! We would return in a heartbeat!

Great cottage on the mountain
The cottage is great and the homemade food is amazing. The location is also very good with clear views across the valley, though unofrtunately when I was there it rained quite a lot, but even then the misty sky is quite something anyway. Very nice family as well.

The perfect vacation house
Beautiful location. Very pleasant & cozy vacation home with a beatiful view of the surrounding country. And very friendly hosts. Both speak English very well. The meal looked great and was very tasty. The bento lunch box deserves a special mention: tasty food and lovingly packaged.

Stunning views, beautiful house, incredible food

Wonderful cabin in the mountains
This rental cottage was our first night's accommodation as we started the Kumano Kodo and was perfect in every way. Peaceful and comfortable, with only birds and frogs to keep us company. Across the board excellent!
This was the best accommodations I had over the course of my 5 day hike on the Kumano Kodo. Sakura and Mahito, the couple who run this cottage, were incredibly friendly and hospitable. They clearly put a great deal of thought into providing for their guests in every way possible. The cottage is perfect - beautiful cedar wood throughout, all natural and organic products (shampoos and soaps to organic coffee from a local farm), a speaker system with bluetooth compatibility and CDs, and things for guests to entertain themselves like a guitar, yoga mat, and hammock for the porch. The view is fantastic out over the mountains and next to a tea farm. Mahito is the chef and the meals were wonderful - beautifully presented and delicious. I wish I'd finished my hike here and could have spent a few days relaxing and enjoying the whole environment. Sakura and Mahito also followed up with me very quickly via email when I asked about ordering some coffee from their friend's farm. (The map makes this cottage look like it is far from the path but it really, really isn't. It's only about a 5 minute walk, if that far. And the cottage is definitely worth it!)

One of the best places I have ever stayed at
I would give this place 6 stars if I could. Its run by a lovely young couple. The cabin is idyllic - fantastic views, its newly built, its very comfortable, its very cute, everything is designed perfectly. The food was some of the most delicious I have had in Japan, and it was prepared with real care. Everything about this place is lovely, and what makes a difference is the genuine care of the hosts.
