Overall it's a nice place to stay a night
This house is indeed very close to tanabe Station, and there are also quite a few restaurants and other facilities around. However, the location is a bit hard to find. It's hidden in an alley and you need to check in elsewhere (very close). The room is very Japanese-style. It's a bit inconvenient to enter and exit, but it's quite large with ample space. It also has air conditioning and other basic facilities. The bathroom is very clean. Although the shower room is relatively compact, it is very convenient to use. Overall, it's a nice place to stay. The host is very friendly.

Basic, but good location
Location was excellent, but check in a little awkward and an unnecessary back and forwards after finding a note at the location to go to the cafe to get the key, which then turned out to be in the room door anyway. Earth floor could do with a little maintenance. I understand the basic aesthetic, but with 'potholes' in both the bathroom and kitchen area it is only a matter of time until someone twists an ankle or does other damage to themselves. Bathroom could have been just a little bit cleaner.

Depends...
That was a friday night. There was Karaok singing out loud until around midnight and people walked on by talking. If you are going Kumano Kodo, the location of this site may not be ideal. But if you are looking for night life and fun, this is a great place to stay.

Impossible to sleep
Guestroom is a nice traditional house, clean and conveniently located. We were in the second floor room N.5. Room was OK but we could barely sleep due to an extremely noisy air conditioning unit in the front building, just a few meters away from our window. Terrible night, not even using earplugs were we able to sleep, it was like having a helicopter inside our room. Very disappointing.

Disappointing introduction to the Kumano Kodo
It was our first exposure to a smaller traditional guesthouse.
Reception - no one at the desk till 3pm, so can't even drop your heavy bags off if you arrive early
Bathroom - it was small and dark, with some rotten wood
Room - very spacious, but needs screens on the windows as we were bitten by mosquitoes all night. And having to climb the steep staircase to use the bathroom downstairs in the middle of the night was just annoying and dangerous.
In summary, the owner needs to invest more money in improving this place

quiet place to relax before the start
I was assigned this place because of an overbooking at the ICHIE cafe, where I had also reserved breakfast. The morning after, I found a packet with a piece of cake left for me from the owner of ICHIE!
The owner was extremely kind and took some time to explain to me the region and the trekking, and gave me a very useful map of the path.

Very convenient location, close to kii Tanabe. Basic clean rooms. Walking distance from beach , Tokei jinja shrine , restaurants and stores. No luggage storage or transfer service but because we were so close to Tanabe tourist office and station, it wasn't a problem to coordinate.

A confortable guesthouse
There was everything we needed in the guesthouse for a night before starting our walk. Our host spoke English very well and was helpful. She gave us advices to find a place to have supper. The Japanese style room was comfortable. We heard some noise from the street but it didn't trouble us to sleep. There is free coffee and tea for the morning in the house.

Interesting Old House
We enjoyed this authentic old guesthouse. It felt like it had a lot of history in the walls and it was nicely tucked away down an alley. We could walk to some interesting parts of kii-Tanabe, and enjoyed a great meal on the good recommendation of our host. The kitchen is well supplied and the room, comfortable, with nice thick futons :)

Great Spot in Tanabe
We stopped here for the night right before departing for the Kumano Kodo. It was a wonderful traditional Japanese room, with shared common spaces. Everything was very clean and orderly. It's easy walking distance from the train station. We got some delicious ramen just down the street. Relatively easy to find, as long as you keep an eye out for the little sign pointing you down the alleyway.

An old house in Tanabe city
1. Location
The homestay is located near the train and bus station, but was a little bit tricky to find since it located in an alley.
2. Room
The homestay is renovated from an old Japanese house with a traditional outlook. Yet, the facilities inside the homestay were completed, even include oven, fridge, huge amounts of plates/bowls/cups/wine glasses and washing machines. Although the rooms are all built high from the ground (I think this is the signature of old Japanese house, ?to prevent flooding), and sometimes would increase the difficulty for me to transfer from one room to another (since I'm a clumsy person), the stay was very cozy here.
3. Staff
Staff is nice, and have provided a lot of information to us about Tanabe city. She even recommended restaurants for us to eat, and gave us map to guide us to the supermarket for food. She would leave the homestay to the bar next door from 18:00 and no one would be around when you check out in the next morning, a little bit insured for us.
Overall, a very special experience to the start of our kumano kodo trip.
