Clean hostel located right across from the train station
We got the private room with bathroom located on the second floor. It was clean and the beds were comfortable. There is a coffee/beer bar and sitting area right outside this room but noise wasn't an issue. It was nice to sit in this common area and chat with some of the other travellers. Get up early and go check out the fish market if you get the chance. Great location, close to restaurants and shops.

The location was great because it's seconds away from Kii Katsura station.

Very clean, organised, safe and comfortable.
We booked the private room which felt like a huge studio apartment just for us! It’s directly across from the JR rail to catch in the morning if you need. Book it, it’s great.

It's alright for a hostel
I am not a big fan of hostels that feel cramped, and this one is a little bit on the tight side. The dorm is quite narrow and there is only one shower for everyone. I received this one because my first choice was fully booked. The staff is very nice and friendly though.

Small & Tight, but great service!
The bunk beds are very small cut out cubbies in the wall, its beautiful and clean, but I personally needed for space after 3 days of hiking and switched to a hotel. Having only one shower and toilet made the bathroom situation tight during peak season! The women at the desk here were so helpful with finding restaurants and calling on my behalf to make reservations to bridge the language barrier. The location could not be better from the train station and tuna market.

A well maintained hostel with friendly staff. An excellent choice for a stop over. Be mentally prepared for minimal privacy as expected of a hostel. Otherwise still a good place that is located right in front of the station.

Second stay at Why Kumano and it was wonderful. The only piece I think that needs updating is that check-in is from 4pm but this wasn't an issue as there are some great cafes nearby for coffee and cake! It was easy to check-in and check-out. They have great facilities and we were able to wash and dry our hiking clothes which was luxury! For departing, the train station is across the street so it's super easy!

Great stay in a lovely port town
Location of the hostel is excellent, just in front of Kii-Katsura station. You can walk to the port and find many restaurants that serves great sushi. Hostel staff is kind and offers you recommendation about places to eat and visit. A lot of tourist who you can interact with. Facilities are clean and convenient.

Great location opposite train station, but most unfriendly staff at check-in
This is literally 2 mins walk from train station. And a nice cafe is conveniently located downstairs for meals. We stayed in the private room, which was decent and clean. However, they had a most unfriendly staff at check-in when we arrived about 3+ pm. Firstly told us brusquely that check-in was at 4.00pm, then realised we had the private room and grudgingly pointed to the room. Similarly manner was rude in responding to some questions we had with regards to meals and luggage storage. We had experienced warm hospitality from locals throughout our trip, and this male reception staff is a disgrace to the reputation of Japanese hospitality, kindness and warmth.

Convenient and cool place to stay.
Right across the street from the station, a perfect place for a stopover. I had a private room, which was spacious and clean. The hostel offers all kinds of recommendations for food and drink in town. The café/communal space is quite small, but has a good vibe. In the morning I enjoyed the delicious complimentary coffee.

Well-Located but…
The hostel seems great for a younger crowd, however I wouldn’t recommend paying the price for the ensuite room. The door is thin, and the room (while convenient) is located on the same level as the shared kitchen/laundry/reception/bar so it was noisy until quite late.
Though you are required to take your shoes off for the room, the entryway is awkwardly small and difficult to put on hiking shoes (you are also in the way of the kitchen/laundry).
There was a low table provided in the room but no seats (the carpet didn’t seem clean to sit on) so you are pretty much just on your bed only. I think the room may have seen better days. The bathroom was pretty decent though.

There’s room for improvement
The hotel is perfectly located, right in front of the train station and bus station. However it is very basic. There’s only one bathroom for the entire hostel, the common space is not very welcoming and the bedroom has poor ventilation. It smelled pretty bad in the bedroom so airconditioning couldn’t keep up with the amount of people in there. I opened the window to ventilate but it was very loud outside

Perfect location!
It is right next to Kii-Katsuura train station and to the bus stops for Kumano Naichi Taisha! More convenient thant that would be impossible. The dormitory was nice, I loved the dispostion of the beds, you can easily find a nice quiet corner, felt so private and comfortable!

Good value and location
Location is across the roundabout from the train station, very easy to walk to anywhere in the town. We stayed in the private guestroom on the 2nd floor. Room was nice, beds were comfortable, was nice having the shower and toilet in our own room. Only downside was that when we woke up, we discovered there were 5-6 mosquitos in the room with us and we had bites all over our arms, faces and necks that itched for days afterwards.

バーコーナーから那智勝浦駅もよく見え、旅先での雰囲気も抜群です。
また周辺の飲食店情報も細かく、宿泊者目線で読み物としても面白かった。
飲食はアルコールのみのため★4、風呂は使用しなかったので評価なしとしました。
ワイクマノさんに限らず、ベッドの奥ではなく入り口に近いところに電気のスイッチがあればといつも思います。。

Why Kumano
This is a new and friendly hostel located right across the street from the train station. The owner was very nice, and the pod-style beds were very comfortable. It is an inexpensive option for the end of your Kumano hike.

Modern and clean hostel in the heart of Katsuura
Had a wonderful rest day after completing the Kumano Kodo. The owners are young and have a hip ascetic to the accommodation. At night the communal area is also used as a bar and it is a great place to have a drink and chat with some locals. Only warning is that there is a single shower shared amongst the dorm room so you may have to wait for your turn to wash up.

Goro is the best host in Kumano
The Why Kumano Hostel has a great bar and Goro is a fantastic asset. Our luggage was left at our previous accommodation due to an error on behalf of the Kumano Kodo Shuttle service and he chased it up for us and made sure it was delivered that night. Goro also helped us work out our onward journey by calling our next hotel for us.
The hostel bar is frequented by some friendly locals too and we had a great night despite the very late delivery of our luggage.
