New Tour Alert: KUMANO KODO Self-Guided Pilgrimage & Zen Retreat | 8 Days | Spring 2027
We're excited to introduce our newest exclusive local package: an 8-day, 7-night advanced self-guided pilgrimage that pairs the meditative rhythm of walking the ancient Kumano Kodo with the stillness of Zen practice.
Trek through remote villages and forested mountain trails from Takijiri-oji to Nachi Taisha, staying in a hand-picked mix of traditional guesthouses, minshuku, and onsen ryokan along the way. The journey's highlight comes in Koguchi, where guests take part in a chair-based Zazen meditation session and tea ceremony at a local temple, followed by a shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian) dinner prepared under the temple's supervision — a rare pairing of movement and stillness found nowhere else on the trail.
Along the route, visit two of the three Kumano Grand Shrines and Japan's tallest waterfall, soak in onsen hot springs on two nights, and finish your pilgrimage in the seaside hot spring town of Katsuura, famous for its fresh maguro tuna.
