大雲取越、小雲取越ウォークの拠点や田舎暮らしを味わえる1組限定のお宿です。
熊野古道、大雲取越と小雲取越の中間にある小口地区。その小口集落より、さらに上流約２kmにある農家民宿ゲストハウスクマァノです。
インドに何度か旅行したことがあるオーナーが、インドの言葉で母という意味のマァと「母なる大地熊野」をかけてお宿の名前をつけたそうです。
周りは川と山、棚田に囲まれており、清流に癒され、田舎でのんびりと過ごすのに最適です。
客室の川側に面したテラスがあり、夏は特に涼しさを体感できます。
お食事は自家農園で採れた無農薬野菜を中心とした家庭的な内容です。
熊野古道ウォークの拠点として、また田舎暮らしを満喫したい方に是非おすすめです。

Our Favorite Stay Along Kumano Kodo
We loved our one night stay at Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse. The reception after a long day of hiking was incredible. The hosts were so kind and lovely and the setting is spectacular along the river with the sound of the waterfall. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent. It was a little slice of heaven!!

Organic heaven!!
For those that like it rustic, this place in heaven on earth. Home grown organic rice, organic veggies, mountain water, outdoor hot bath overlooking the river. Cosy and comfortable beds. The location is stunning. The home-cooked food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was absolutely delicious and a twist on traditional Japanese (the Japanese/Indian curry was amazing). You could easily stay here for more than 1 night to relax in this organic heaven and explore the nearby area. The hosts were warm, welcoming and interesting people leading an off the grid life in the mountains. We wished we had stayed longer and consumed more of the home-made ume brandy

Beautiful hosts and setting
The most welcoming and warm hosts. This was a serene and magical setting nestled between a river and the mountains. The food grown on the farm was fresh and tasty. Dietary accommodations were honored. I can't say enough good about these hosts and the setting. A member in the group said it was the best bath experience of his life. We were sent off with a wonderful blessing on our last day of the Kumano Kodo. We would stay here again with no hesitation.

Rustic stay

A magical farmhouse stay by the river
Staying at the Kumaano farmhouse was one of the highlights of our three weeks in Japan. We arrived tired after a long day, crossed the bridge and were kindly picked up by the owner and driven to the farmhouse — a gesture that immediately made us feel cared for and welcome. The setting is truly magical, right by the river, with a beautiful outdoor bathhouse tucked under a small awning. Sitting in the piping-hot bath while listening to the babbling brook was deeply relaxing and unforgettable. The food was exceptional — clearly prepared with love and attention — and made even more special knowing that much of it was grown in their own organic garden. Every detail reflected generosity and pride in what they do. When we left the next day, they played a conch shell toward the mountains to wish us good luck on our journey — a moment of sincerity and kindness we will never forget. These are truly wonderful hosts, and if you are travelling through this area, staying here is a very special experience. We feel grateful to have shared even a short time in this beautiful place.

Incredible Experience
We had such a wonderful time at the Kumaano Farm and Guesthouse. Nirev and his wife were lovely hosts and made us incredible food, much of which came from their own farm. The variety of dishes and large amount of food was just what we needed amid long days of strenuous hiking. The farmhouse itself is quirky and fun. The riverside wood-fire bath was a particular highlight. We visited during a very cold December night and the log cabin was quite drafty, but we stayed cozy with the room's kotatsu and heating pads under our futon. The provided blankets were also thick and warm! With limited daylight, we unfortunately didn't have enough time to explore the beautiful and quiet valley that the farmhouse is located in. We would not hesitate to return and spend more time exploring the region.

Our most meaningful stay in Japan
Nirav and his wife were gracious, generous, and accommodating hosts. The room itself was a chilly as we visited in December, but a hot bath overlooking the river and some time spent under heated blankets sorted us right out. Listening to the river and the rain felt like a cozy bit of heaven. Our vegetarian meals were the best we had in Japan, including an absolutely wonderful curry dish inspired by our host's travels in India. Nirav also sent us off in the morning in a very special way. I don't want to post about it as it's best experienced as a wonderful surprise, but it was one of the most meaningful moments of our trip in Japan.

One of a kind stay
This was definitely an adventurous and fun stay. After getting picked up from a bus stop next to the trailhead, we were taken to a farmhouse that was quite different from any other I've experienced. The house itself has a traditional tatami floor, with outdoor bath and toilets. This may not be for those who prefer more comfortable travel, but was quite a fun experience. The bath has 2 walls, and faces the river. While the shower is freezing cold in the winter, as soon as you hop in the tub its an amazing and serene experience. The food was really wonderfully cooked by the hosting couple. Another thing to note is the outdoor bathrooms, where guests have to put on 3 pairs of slippers to use, which can be a hassle. Overall I loved it, and think its quite a unique experience for those who are more adventurous.

A truly wonderful experience
From the moment Asa picked us up from Koguchi we felt so welcomed by her and Nirav, they are amazing hosts who show warmth and kindness to their guests. The cottage is rustic and cosy which very much adds to its charm, we loved the location right next to the river. The outdoor onsen was a unique experience overlooking the river and the weir and was lovely and hot for our arrival. The food was absolutely incredible, it's hard to describe. Not only just the best we had on the trek but some of the best we had in Japan. The preparation of the lunch box was thoughtfully completed with salt and sauces. Would recommend the homemade plum wine also! We also had access to a washing machine which we were very grateful for. We felt very lucky to have the opportunity to stay here whilst hiking the Kumano Kodo.

A very warm and special place to stay
My husband and I agree that this was our favorite guest home during our Kumano Kodo trek It is very rustic—bathing in an outdoor tub or with buckets, outdoor access to the bathroom— and that is very much a part of its unique charm. The setting is absolutely beautiful—right next to the river, surrounded by green hills and the hosts’ farm, much of which ends out in the delicious fresh meals they serve. The hosts were so genuinely kind and gracious. The hostess (a nurse) even gave tender care to an injury I’d sustained. Their warmth and care were much of what made this stay exceptional and we’re grateful to them for the experience.

This place is a must!
Wow! We wish we had of stayed two nights here. Positioned right next to the river where you can have a dip and just relax and listen to the water. The owners are the friendliest couple and great cooks. They made sure we did not go hungry and served up some of the best food that we have had. The bath is also located so you can look out the river. Do yourself a favour and stay here!!

A picturesque majestic Farmhouse in wonderland, I felt like I stepped into a fairytale, the place is surrounded by mountains, a river flowing in front of the porch. The shower has a waterfall view. The river flowing lullaby me to a peaceful sleep. we called the host from the store Asa came and picked us up, Asa hospitality was so out of this world exquisite food with home grown vegetables and rice. And Nirav homemade Umeshu worth a try. in the morning Nirav played us the shell instrument asking the mountains to protect us. lunch box was the best. Nirav drop us off in the morning to the trailhead the host are passionate about hosting this is the most best place I had stayed in at Japan for all my 2 weeks in the country. highly recommended

Fantastic experience
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse. Our hosts were absolutely lovely and did everything they could to make us feel welcome. Their attention to details was particularly noticeable and they truly want their guests to be well. The food was exceptional and the whole experience was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. They gave us lots of tips regarding our trip the next day as well. Something people need to be aware of: you are staying in the countryside and some of the amenities may be seen as basic (the bath for instance) and there are some insects around (for the record, no-one got bitten). This did not bother us at all and on the contrary it was part of the charm of the place. Highly recommend it!

Amazing stay!

great farmhouse experience
The owner and his wife provided a warm welcome. The food was exceptional, featuring a farm-to-table experience, and the takeaway bento was also high quality and generously portioned. Glorious nature and incredible hospitality
Nirav and Asa are the sweetest hosts! They are both kind and down to earth. We knew that the accommodations would be rustic and natural, and that is why we wanted to stay at Kumaano Farmhouse. I must say that everything was incredibly clean, even though there were a lot of outdoor elements to the home. So, that was amazing. We arrived to Koguchi early, decided to call Nirav to see if he could pick us up and to arrive early to the accommodation, and he kindly obliged. He was there in 10 minutes and drove us back to the guest house. Nirav also has his own homemade plum wine (delicious), beer, wine and spirits available for purchase at the house. The home is located right on the river, and the sound of the water was soothing and peaceful. Accommodations were one large room for 4 of us, with large individual futons. There was a private modern (and very clean) toilet located on the opposite deck, with a separate hand basin. The outdoor bath area looked onto the river and the furnace water was hot (no need to worry about a cold bath outdoors). Dinner, breakfast, and our lunch box was some of the best food! The meals were not all Japanese, but incorporated some Indian spices, French techniques, and just delicious flavor! They use vegetables and rice that they grew across the street, home made miso and cheese. Unbelievable. This natural and fun experience will never be forgotten. Thank you, Nirav and Asa. P.S. This is just me, but I brought insect repellent, so we could enjoy relaxing drinks outdoors.

Magical
This was by far the best accomodation we stayed in on our hike. The rustic homemade log cabin set next to a stream with a waterfall in beautiful mountainous countryside was just magical. Everything about it was perfect. The pickup was easily arranged by phone from the village and the owner arrived promptly to drive us the short distance to the farmhouse. There was even a welcome sign with my name on. The owner brought us green tea and then showed us around. The outside bath with a view of the stream and waterfall was the icing on the cake. The cabin was spacious but very cosy and oozed rustic charm. The beds comfortable with heated futons if required in the cooler weather. There was an outside kitchen if needed, but we opted for the three meals which were absolutely amazing and not to be missed. The organic rice was grown by the owners and so were some of the vegetables. We could not have felt more welcome and looked after by the owner and his lovely wife. Would highly recommend Kumaano Farm and Guesthouse. Thank you.

The most amazing place to stay with the best hosts

Unforgettable stay
Our stay at Kumaano Farm and Guesthouse was our favourite night of our entire trip to Japan. The host was so hospitable and generous, cooking us the most delicious homemade meals that surpassed any of our dining experiences in Japan (don't forget to try the homemade plum wine). I have never been so full and satisfied! The cottage is comfortable and homely, and the outdoor bath by the river was magical. It is clear the host really cares about his guests, and all of his efforts are noticeable. Do not miss out on staying at Kumaano farm! It is truly spectacular and an experience we will never forget.

Finding spiritual homeland on the Kumano Kodo
While this accommodation is not located very near the trail, it is situated in the most beautiful valley with a mountain stream and waterfall cascading nearby. The owner will come pick you up or drop you off at the trail if you like. I think it is ABSOLUTELY worth it to stay here. The accommodation itself is a hand-built cabin that the owner is renovating himself. It is a wonder and delight - thoughtfully set up to keep us cozy even in the chilly winter time. The outdoor bath with a view of the waterfall is a triumph of ingenuity. The meals we were served were imaginative and delicious, including produce from this very farm! I will never think of boiled peanuts the same and hope you get to try them. Above and beyond all the cozy creature comforts (like a variety of yukata to wear around the home), this space is extremely special in a deeply spiritual way. Just listen to how the mountains sing back to you here, and you'll understand what I mean.

trip highlight
This farmhouse is set in secluded Japanese countryside beside a rushing creek. The rooms are large and comfortable. The traditional Japanese futon and bedding was incredibly warm and luxurious. The host is delightful and speaks English quite well. The bath house is amazing with a bath full of piping hot water set beside a rushing weir open to nature. The host serves delicious meals in the kitchen house adjacent and he lives in another farmhouse a short distance away. Much of the food including the rice is grown on the farm. The only downside is that its another 1.8km from koguchi trailhead and the farm is not on goolgle/ apple maps so findng it relies on the Kumano map and there is no signage along the way. That was annoying but overall this place was absolutely outstanding and the best night of our Kumano trip.

Farm to Table Amazing Meals
The food is amazing and the fact it was home grown and locally sourced made them even more enjoyable. We hiked in winter so the guesthouse was a little cold however it provided beautiful views. Especially the hot bath even in the winter is worth getting undressed outdoors! Location is far, but host was welcoming, driving us to the trailhead after a little blessing ceremony! Amazing time!

Beautiful setting and delicious food
We arrived during a torrential downpour so we didn't see how beautiful the setting is until the next morning. It's a really gorgeous farm next to a waterfall and nestled in the mountains and rice paddies. Our host is a great cook and helped us as best he could with our soaked clothes. Pick up time after calling him was about 10 minutes. He also dropped us off at the Koguchi trailhead in the morning after playing a conch shell to ward off the spirits from the trail we were walking the next day.

Very rustic but hugely enjoyable
We loved our one-night stay in this unique guesthouse. Almost a whole farmhouse to ourselves (the owner lives in a house up the road) right by a beautiful small river roaring next to us. The outdoor hot bath (pre-pared by our host--thank you!) with a view of a waterfall was both special and very welcome after the day's walk. Our dinner, breakfast and lunchbox were the best of our trip. Our host (I'm sorry I can't remember your name) could easily have a career as a chef. And the farewell salute to the mountain gods in the morning will stick in our memories for a long time. Something to be aware of... this really is a rustic farmhouse. It's very comfortable inside but there are gaps between some wall planks and the doors don't seal well, so in winter this would be a problem (although the doonas are very warm). You have to go outside for the toilet, basin and kitchen which are along the verandah and the bath is in an open-sided, separate building. Despite this, it wouldn't stop us visiting again for a very special experience! Loved it.

Homely guesthouse and wonderful host!
Situated right along a calming river, the guest house was homely and had the comfiest futons of all the accomadations we stayed while in the area. The host was attentive and friendly and we had some lovely conversations about our holiday, his cats, and his home and life. The meals were delicious and we appreciate the care taken ensuding our stay was delightful. He also picked us up and dropped us off which was a great service.

Our best stay during Kumano Kodo
A fast pick-up, a warm welcome, everything prepared, incl. the hot outdoor bath, which we very enjoyed afer the hike on a rainy day. The room is very large incl. a nice terrace and the possibility to order drinks. One of the highlights of our pilgrimage on Kumano Kodo
This particular guesthouse was absolutely fantastic. Our hosts took really good care of us and made us gourmet meals for dinner, breakfast and bento box. I'm still salivating thinking about it. The guesthouse is right next to a waterfall. We slept on futon beds laid out on tatami mats. We were surrounded with beautiful nature, and we had intimacy with our own Onsen overlooking the waterfall. It was magical, and our hosts were absolutely charming. I feel they bent over backwards to take good care of us. Totally unique and memorable. Don't miss out!!!

Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse is amazing
Our stay at Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The collection from the local store was easy. The location by a mountain stream was fantastic. Great for swimming and general stream sitting in summer. The accommodation opens out onto a patio with seating to enjoy nature. The hosts and their food were awesome. Only two of us there. The send off the next day was special.

Easily the best stay of our hike
Staying at Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse is truly a memorable experience. The hosts were extremely kind and welcoming. The place was super cozy and the bath, oh my goodness! We requested vegetarian meals and the meals were spectacular! It was special knowing the produce and rice were grown on their farm. The lunch box was packed with more delicious food and was perfect for the difficult day of hiking. The host played a traditional horn song for us that was very moving. Overall, we will never forget the experience.

Family travel with kids- Lovely farm with gushing river in the background, excellent home cooked vegetarian food, super hospitable hosts
Our stay at Kumaano farms and guest house was lovely! It's a place to destress and unplug. No internet as the pocket WIFI don't have coverage here. There is no AC but we didn't really feel the heat ( we were there in the heart of summer in July). Our hosts went out of the way to cook multi course vegetarian meals and even pizza for the kids. Dinner and breakfast were sumptuous, and the packed lunch was the best we had in all of Kumano kodo. The guest house is surrounded by owner's farm and our meals were farm fresh sourced from the farm.

Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse made us exceptionally comfortable in their unique, charming, cozy home. It was a truly special experience. Wow--this was a memorable stay!
The setting of this guesthouse is remarkable, by a cold stream that you can wade in to soothe aching feet after another day of hiking. I was initially nervous about the fact that there was no air conditioning, expeically given that we were hiking during a heat advisory, but open windows, the stream, and fans made the beautiful guest house very comfortable. The hosts were so lovely, and the food--much of which is grown on the farm--was just incredible. Laundry on site as well. I can't recommend this more highly.

Off the path - but so worth it
This farmstay was spectacular. It is about 1.5km off the Kumano Kodo but the next morning the host drove us back to the trailhead. You have an entire living room, bedroom and bathroom to yourself. The bath/shower area is outdoors and looks over a river (There are curtains if you are uncomfortable). The host had a hot bath ready for us when we arrived. Bonus - there is a washing machine. They also provide Yukata. Dinner was amazing and plentiful, a mix of japanese, indian and western foods.

One of the coolest places I've ever stayed in the world
This was one of the absolute coolest places I've ever stayed in my 32 years of traveling. The guesthouse was comfortable and cozy, the location with the river on one side and a farm on the other was absolutely perfect (sleeping to the soothing sound of the river was fantastic), and the hosts were extremely sweet and so generous. They cooked us a delicious dinner with ingredients from their own farm across the street! Truly a gift.

Outstanding
This ended up being one of the highlights of our trip in Japan. Nirav was so nice and welcoming, the food was just delicious (and coming directly from Nirav’s farm), the location a picture-perfect piece of paradise… not to mention the most beautiful onsen by the waterfall. We thought we were going to stay there to hike the Kumano Kodo, but I’d say that we actually walked the kumano Kodo to discover places like this. 100% recommend

Amazing Guesthouse in Koguchi!
We had an amazing time at Kumaano Farm and Guesthouse during the Kumano Kodo - our host picked us up from the meeting point in Koguchi and dropped us off the next morning at the trailhead to Nachi, and cooked us a spectacular multi-course dinner, breakfast and packed bento lunch for the next day, with organic vegetables from his own farm! I think the dinner was genuinely the best meal I have had in Japan, I also tried his homemade umeshu which was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend staying here!

A very memorable stay
One of our favorite stays in our entire trip to Japan! The couple running this guesthouse is so so nice, and the meals were amazing home cooked food, lots straight from their farm! We were soaked from our hike that day, and it was so surreal getting picked up at the pay phone, whisked away to a beautiful cabin and outdoor bath, and they even had boot dryers and a clothes washer/drying station. The next day, we had an amazing send off and were dropped off at the trailhead. We felt so taken care of and welcome here, we would love to come back one day! Thank you!!

A very memorable stay!
We arrived on a rainy afternoon and were greeted by the loveliest hosts. Their traditional Japanese house is absolutely charming. It's spacious and the view from the open air bathroom (a running river and cherry blossoms!!) is unforgettable! The meals were all prepared with fresh ingredients and were so delicious (including a big lunch bento box filled with a huge variety of tasty goodies!). The hosts are super friendly and generous. Perfect experience
We had been travelling Asia for 2 months and this Guesthouse was easily one of the best stays/ experiences we had. The hosts were so lovely that we didn't want to leave. The food was incredible, made with vegetables grown on their farm. In particular the curry at dinner, which was so good i wish i had room to eat more, the 'western' breakfast with home made marmalade was a really nice change of pace and the bento lunch was amazing. The room is huge with plenty of space to relax and sleep, we finished the trek quite early and really enjoyed sitting by the river with a beer. Whilst the view from the outdoor bath, with waterfall, cherry blossoms and mountains was idyllic. Finally, before we set off the hosts performed a traditional protection ritual for our trek which was very moving, we will be coming back for sure

Wow!
That was the nicest accommodation we had on our whole Japan trip. The owners are lovely and the place is stunning. It seems a bit remote when I planned it, but its super easy to reach from Koguchi. Unforgettable
We'll never forget our stay here. The house is incredibly unique, warm, welcoming, and special in so many ways. Sleeping next the the rushing river. Cleaning up in the outdoor bath. Hanging out on the porch as the rain rolls by. Warm beds, and the best sleep of the hike. It's all amazing. From the very start you'll feel at home here, and the hosts go above and beyond in every way to make you feel that way. The hosts are deeply generous, kind, and friendly people who will share so much with you if you're open to it. Meals, especially. Bring your appetite to dinner and breakfast because they prepared the largest and most diverse meals we had on the hike. Do not skip the plum brandy and eat all the rice you can!! There's so much value here for your stay, and we can't recommend this place enough. It's a short walk from Koguchi, and worth 10 times the extra few steps it takes to get here, and the hosts are happy to drive you to the trailhead. If you've got a long hike the next day, this place will set you up for the best home stretch possible. Again, we can't overstate the kindness and warmth of this place and the people who manage it. It's special. Thank you!!

Rustic charm with great hosts
Koguchi is one of the more beautiful areas on this hike and this farmhouse is by a river. The bathing area is al fresco and taking a hot tub dip with a stunning river view is not to be missed. Be ready for a bracing shower as there’s no warm water, but you can always mix some of the tub water with it. Futons are super cozy and we slept really well. Free laundry is a plus. The place is rustic and charming and the toilet entails a short walk semi-outdoors crossing on large stones, which we didn’t mind, but might be an issue for some. Food was excellent and a welcome change-different from previous stays as we had curry and other Indian-spiced Japanese dishes. Because food and farming are close to my heart, I love that Nirav grows the rice and half of the vegetables we eat. Nirav and Asa are gentle hosts (with good music taste) and we were touched by the Buddhist ritual sendoff we got for safe travels. We loved our stay here.

I can’t recommend this accommodation enough. It is a private log cabin high up in the mountains run by a lovely couple who will feed you way too much delicious food. The bathtub doesn’t get better. Outside, covered, heated by a wood stove, ready to go when you arrive and beside a creek that is raging with sound. The beds were big and fluffy with heated pads for extra warmth. This place is magical.

Wonderful stay
We absolutely loved Kumaano Farm., The sweet couple who own and run this guesthouse are each gems in their own way- farming organic rice and veggies, and preparing them for us for our delicious and big meals! Dinner was fabulous- tasty Japanese chicken curry with Indian touches - and all sorts of other yummy delights like homemade pizza and their farm grown peanuts as an app - thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated after a big day on the Kumano Kodo! We were picked up and dropped off at the trail and sent off with a purification and blessing from the conch horn - in order to placate the spirits in the mountains and prepare our way- highly appreciated! The outdoor hot bath facing the river was sublime and the digs comfortable in a rustic way - one must navigate outdoors to the bathroom for example but that's the charm of the place. We cannot more highly recommend Kumaano and say THANK YOU to its proprietors for such a lovely stay and great night's sleep as the river roars by below - very peaceful! Btw breakfast AND the packed lunch were also delicious - we stopped at the viewpoint near Nachi Taisha with others and could not help but feel a tad smug about the superb quality of our bento!

A hidden Gem
Kumaano Guesthouse & Farm was the highlight of our entire 2 weeks stay in Japan. The online photographs certainly don't do it the justice it deserves. Although about 20min off the main trailhead, the owners are more than happy to provide transport to and from the trailhead, although the walk through the town of Koguchi along the river is beautiful and recommended. The accommodation is located right on the river, next to a waterfall, overlooking forested slopes of towering mountains all around. A separate bath house with hot tub, provides for a surreal end of day relaxing experience with views over the river and colourful trees. The accommodation is for exclusive use and the owners stay a few minutes away, making the accommodation private and providing a homely feeling. The highlight was the food, loving prepared and sourced directly from the garden and from the region. The owners run a working farm and put some of their produce directly into the meals. One look at the guestbook, shows a common theme (the excellent food) and indeed it was. Although the owners have limited English, they are incredibly helpful and fantastic hosts, providing a highly recommended experience. In our opinion, this should be your first choice for accommodation in Koguchi.

Cutest rustic stay
This isn't the closest place to Koguchi village but the location is still fantastic in a nice spot close by. We were picked up from Koguchi and it was just a short drive. We loved the outdoor bath next to the river (this was quite loud but made a great white noise background at night), and the overall rustic charm of the guesthouse. We felt so welcome and ate so well it was almost too much food for us, though it was all delicious!

Best experience ever, loved every moment
Honestly, our stay at Nirav-san and Asa-san's farmhouse was the highlight of our Kumano Kodo journey and also our whole trip in Japan. The farmhouse is right next to a waterfall, you will fall asleep surrounded by nature. It is incredibly beautiful and such an amazing experience - not in a western luxury way, but in a homely, authentic Japanese way. Asa-san and Nirav-san were so welcoming, friendly and kind. Very beautiful place, probably the best out of every guesthouse ive ever been too, super exclusive, the food was homegrown, home cooked and home served. The bathroom is something else. Getting to enjoy a warm bath next to a lemon tree and open view of the river flowing was something out of this world. The cherry on the cake was that very cute cat called mikella who was staying at the owners house. If its available, RESERVE IT FAST. :)

A hidden gem, a small paradise

What a beautiful gem is this guesthouse. Nirav and his wife were really kind and welcoming. They gave the stay the perfect personal touch. The place it self is extra ordinary, the nature blew us away as well as their guesthouse. The bath was warm and with beautiful views. Also the clean kimonos were such a treat. Last but not least the food was really tasty and welcoming after a hard day of “work”. When we were there it was raining all night, but it made our stay magical, one to remember! Arigato.

Loved this place! Located in a beautiful rural area right on a river, very rustic and peaceful. We loved the outdoor shower/bath and sitting out on the porch watching the rain. Go to this farm! It's a bit off the trail. But the owner will pick you up at the end of the walk. The surroundings of the farm are beautiful, the owner and his wife are so sweet and helpful. Don't expect western luxury. It's basic. But totally Japanese. At the end of the day walking use the bath and then enjoy a fantastic meal in your Kimono. most memorable place we stayed on the Kumano Kodo trail
Nirav-san and Asa-san were amazing hosts. Guests get an entire little farmhouse to themselves - it was by far the largest accommodations we had, and had a little kitchenette to use, clothes drier, double futon mattress (so comfortable!), and the most amazing private bathing area that looks out onto a beautiful river. Just wow. Food was excellent, and the rice and many of the veggies came from Nirav-san's own farm/garden. He sent us off with a blessing on the conch. Pick up from the Kowaze bus stop (just over the river) was very easy calling them using skype. Just look up the calling code for Japan and save their number in advance, although they had a convenient sign at the bus stop with the number as well.

Amazing place + food!
Our hosts were so kind and welcoming, and the location is simply gorgeous on the river. We had no problems walking there, but our hosts offered to pick us up and did drive us to the trailhead the next morning. The food was fantastic. The hosts helped us to plan our hike and made sure everything was taken care of and comfortable for us.

Special gem of a place
This is definitely one of the most unique place we've stayed! It's literally a house in the middle of nowhere! But it's so special, quiet and beautiful! Call the owner and he will be able to pick you up from a nearby convenience store. Once we got to the property, we were blown away by the location; imagine taking a hot bath in a bathtub NEXT to a river! Or watching the cranes flyby and hearing the sounds of the forest as you wash away the tiredness lazing in the bath. The owner only takes in 1 group of guests per day, so you are guaranteed to have the whole guesthouse to yourselves and it's a large place! Come dinner, the owner and his wife will prepare a feast for your tummies and made with ingredients grown mostly from his farm! We really enjoyed the dinner and the time spent talking with him and him sharing with us his journeys, his religion, his farm and so much more! Although it's a little out of the way if not doing the Kumano Kodo, we are looking forward to travel back there specifically to stay in this beautiful little guesthouse!

Best placate stay on walk
I can not comment highly enough about our experience at this guesthouse. The owners are super hospitable , kind and helpful . We arrived wet and cold. They did everything to make us warm , comfortable and helped dry alll our belongings. Meals were super delicious . A very special experience , one I would love to repeat .

Brilliant hospitality, wonderful hosts
We had a great time at Kumaano, the warmest welcome and best meal of my 16 day trip to Japan. The room is charming and very comfortable after a long day hiking. Right alongside a gushing river. The unit is very warm too, thanks to heaters and electric blankets. The outside bath is not a natural spring but is awesome all the same - super hot and lovely views. The hosts are the kindest, warmest people I've met From pickup in town to the Shigendo horn blessing when we departed, we felt like honoured and beloved guests. The meal was truly delicious, with far more than we could get through. Same with the lunch bento box prepared for us the next day (highly recommended). The only caution I would make is that for guests looking for something upmarket, new, clean and minimalistic, the homely feel might not be what you are looking for.

Memorable
This place was so unique and charming. It is pretty funky. But probably this is the place we will remember most fondly due to the wonderful hosts The hosts were incredible loving and helpful. The only thing I would suggest is that the path to the bathrooms be a little more secure. They were a bit wobbly. The food was delicious. And the travelers blessing we were given made the trip.

Restful Retreat
This is a wonderful opportunity to take some further respite while on the Kumano Kodo. The cabin was cozy, outdoor wood-fired onsen allowed us to further immerse ourselves into the nature. The mostly local grown food was plentiful and just amazing. Best rice I have every tasted. Thank you for this experience!

We had an amazing stay at Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse. It is a little bit out of town but the journey was certainly worth it. We had our own space and private bath looking over the stream and waterfall. The meals were fantastic. It was a really lovely stay, which I would definitely recommend.

A Dream Stay!
My friend and I loved staying at KUMAANO guesthouse! The perfect rustic stay on a beautiful organic farm with a flowing river while you hike the Kumano Kodo. When we arrived, there was a hot bath ready for us overlooking the river and cherry blossom trees. It was perfect for our sore muscles! Our hosts were beyond kind and helpful, picking us up at the Koguchi bus stop, offering us homemade sake, umeshu, ume juice, making the most delicious dinner, breakfast, and lunch bento box with all homegrown and locally sourced ingredients - including home grown rice!! I cannot express enough how kind our hosts were, giving us a tour of the farm after learning I was interested in agriculture. They also set up heated futons for us and had many warm heaters and kotatsu in the guest cabin. I will dream about that bed for the rest of my life! Truly the best night’s stay after a long day on the trail. As two young female hikers, we felt incredibly safe during this stay and at home! I cannot wait to return in the future. I highly recommend, we love KUMAANO and hope to be back soon, thank you for such a great stay!

Unique. Charming. Different in the best way.
This was a very private place, very rustic, very unique. Hand made onsen, private, for 1 couple sans clothing. Right on a raging stream and waterfall. Fabulous. Host is a transplant from Tokyo, now is a farmer/Shugendo priest. Great experience.

What can I say? This was an amazing place to stay. The bath was hot and ready for us, the food was tasty and plentiful, host had homemade umeshu. The room was a bit cold but the heated blankets made it very cozy. Best place we stayed, absolutely brilliant.

Dream lodge by the river
The hosts literally saved us from drowning in the rain, coming to fetch us with a car as we wandered lost on the road. The guestroom or rather guesthouse is right on a river bank and fully equipped with anything you need after a long day in the rain: dryers for shoes and clothes, as well as a heated carpet. The view from the room and the bathtub is indescribable. The hosts are very friendly and kind, with lots of stories about their trips to India and their love for the Kumano region. We have learned much about the ancient Shugendo religious tradition and were blessed with a morning send-off asking local deities to protect us on the last and the hardest day of the hike. We couldn't stop eating the hosts' home-grown food, so much so that we could barely make it back to our room :)

Beautiful and Serene Natural Guesthouse with Delicious Food
Our stay here was a huge highlight of our whole trip! They use many homegrown organic ingredients and the food they prepared for us was unbelievably delicious. The proprietors were incredibly kind and accommodating and the guesthouse is so charming. It is located in a beautiful spot by the river a fair distance from the bus stop so you might consider arranging a pickup with them. We felt really comfortable, relaxed, and at home. It's winter so of course its chilly but we took an amazing hot bath overlooking the river and the bedding was super warm and cozy and there is a kotatsu (heated blanket table) and heater to warm up. The whole experience was very special. We will never forget it!!

Beautiful rustic stay with lovely hosts
We very much enjoyed our stay here. The hosts were lovely and we learned about Shugendo from the host. A highlight was the traditional farewell in the morning with protection from the Kumano spirits. The meal was very traditional and delicious. We had the whole house to ourselves and it is beautifully located right beside a small rover. I would however warn other travellers that the house is not insulated and it was very cold inside as we were there in December - however we still had a great sleep as the bedding was warm. I think this would only be an issue in the absolutely coldest months.

Great dinner and breakfast - huge and delicious! Best rice we had in a month in Japan. It was cold in December, but the great soak in the outdoor bath was warming, and there were plenty of covers for a very comfortable night's sleep. The owners are very kind! Wish we had time to talk more with them about farming.

A fantastic stay at Kumaano farm
This is such a fantastic stay if you want to experience traditional Japan. The farm house is rustic, bathing is almost right on a flowing river just like what you see in old Japanese movies, and the food is plentiful and prepared from the organic vegetables and rice grown on the farm. The hosts are practitioners of Shugendo ascetism, and explained some of the principles to us. When he dropped us off at the bus station, he blowed a little song thru an enormous shell to wish us safety in our travels. Absolutely amazing. We got there when it was cold and the guestroom can use a little more heat but other than that, it's more than a perfect stay. A must if you are walking the kumano and want to get back to the old traditional way. Totally recommended.

Throughout our trip, this was the best overall homestay experience. The home itself was comfortable, beautiful, and located right next to the river. The open-air bath had a gorgeous scenery of the river. We were incredibly grateful for the abundant and delicious food that was prepared for us. Although homemade, it felt like a michelin star dinner - fresh veggies (and peanuts!) from their farm, soup, tempura, fish, chicken … and we had really interesting chats with the hosts during our meals :)

Rice Paddies and Bathing In Front of Waterfalls
Our stay was incredible and unforgettable. The building faces a river and private forested land on one side, and rice paddies and mountains in the other side. The river has several weirs with waterfalls. It's a beautiful scene. The wash area and tub is outdoor but is only visible to private empty land. There are blinds if you don't want the trees and the birds to see you bathe. The sinks face the river. The room had sliding glass doors that enclose the room at night. The photo of the host on the website is not a good photo. In real life he looks like a poetry professor. He and his wife are both charming. They cooked us delicious food and gave us a ride to and from the village of Koguchi.

Fantastic stay at KUMAANO Farm
Without the slightest concerns we can highly recommend this guesthouse for everybody - shorter stays while walking the kumano kodo but also longer stays to explore the area around koguchi with locals off the beaten track. The place is clean and spacious, beautifully located next to the river and rice/vegetable fields,English communication is no problem for the hosts who both have traveled before and especially the homemade, organic food is absolutely fantastic! Not only the pilgrimage itself but this excellent farmstay will be in best memories!

Happy day!!!
Kumaano Farm & Guesthouse is a lovely place to be after a full day walking in the mountain. It is located in a quiet area right next to a river. The bathroom is outside the cottage and it has an open view to the river. Althought it was freezing as we stayed there during winter, the water was very warm and it was so incredibly fun to bathe outside! We truly enjoyed it! The hostess is a very kind person and makes THE BEST umeshu (plum wine) we ever tried. Also he serve meals with vegetables and rice cultivated by himself. It was really nice talking to him and we have no words to thank him enough to receive us on New Year’s Eve. For last I need to mention Michitarou San, the Farm’s new staff, as he likes to introduce himself. Michitarou is one of the happiest person we ever met. Wow! He has a great vibe, he is funny and kind and just the thought of him still makes us smile. I will never forget Michitarou singing his “mantra” (in English!) at 7am, while he was driving to the trailhead to kindly drop us off: “let’s make a happy day, happy day, happy day!”

Kumaano Farm & Guest House
So it is really interesting that throughout the day we had read about Shugendo at the Hongu information center and in the Kumano Travel Guide Book and then we were able to stay in a guest house ran by a practitioner of the religion. This was an experience that wrapped you up in the culture of the region. This had to be my favorite place to stay. Bathing by the river was enjoyable as you relaxed in the hot tub and heard the loud noise from the river. Also, for the first time in over 15 years I was able to see the Milky Way again. When dinner was done and lights were out my wife and I went out to the road and I laid down and just looked up at the stars. I have not seen that many stars since I was a kid. I went BACK out to the road again at 0230 in the morning and it was even BETTER! My wife and I were done and did not want to continue from Koguchi to Nachi. After such a great sleep and wonderful food, we felt great and actually finished the trail an hour and a half faster than the recommended time! Also, thank you to the hosts for finding my wifes walking sticks! We left them at a cafe before walking to the house and they went and picked them up for us. So nice!

The best 14 hours we've spent in all of our time in Japan!
We could not be more satisfied with our time at KUMAANO Farm and Guesthouse. We were late out the trail and our hosts called to see if we were OK. Once we got off the trail, our hosts picked us up without our even asking them to do so. At the guesthouse, they were so welcoming and gracious, we felt right at home. The dinner they made us was the best meal we've been served in Japan, hands down, no questions asked. It was remarkable. Our hosts never stopped being kind and welcoming. Our accommodations were excellent. The shower outside with the river rushing past was awesome, and we got to hear the river while we slept as well. Breakfast the next morning was perfect, and our hosts wished us well on our last day of hiking. Could not recommend this place and these hosts any more. They were great!

Getting ready/ Cargando pilas
Como unas 6 horas después de haber salido del alojamiento anterior, llegamos al lugar donde habíamos acordado encontrarnos con el dueño. Se trataba de una carretera a las afueras de un pueblo donde, después de llamar al hombre, vino a recogernos en coche y nos llevó hasta la cabaña. El lugar, una cabañita muy cuca en medio del campo y al lado de un río. Una vez allí, por fin pudimos asearnos, hacer la colada y descansar un poco. Hicimos el camino en junio, por lo que sudamos muchísimo (de hecho el sueño, en previsión a eso, puso toallas en los asientos del coche). Una vez descansados, los dueños nos preguntaron sobre qué hora teníamos pensado cenar, para poder empezar a prepararla. En general para hacer este viaje es recomendable empezar la jornada pronto, sobre las 6:00 y, teniendo en cuenta los horarios japoneses, cenamos al rededor de las 20:00. Fue entonces cuando nos encontramos con el mayor festín del que hemos podido disfrutar jamás. Era un no parar de platos y comidas diferentes, a cada cual más y más rico. Éramos 3 personas muertas de hambre después de días de caminar mucho y comer rápido y mal, y aun así fuimos incapaces de terminarnos toda la comida que nos sirvieron, por mucho que lo intentásemos. Y Dios sabe que lo intentamos. Después de cenar, y estar charlando con ellos nos preguntaron sobre qué hora teníamos pensado salir, ya que también nos acercan al punto de comiendo de la ruta del día siguiente. A la mañana siguiente, nos prepararon el desayuno y una fiambrera con comida, ya que esta ruta es de las más aisladas del camino y no hay ninguna tienda. La ruta comienza en un pueblo donde hay algún ultramarinos y varias paradas de autobús en caso de que sean necesarias. Nosotros, en general, no tuvimos problema para comunicarnos ya que algunos hablamos japonés, pero quizás sea un problema para aquellos que no hablen nada.
