The location of this hotel was sublime. We appreciated that Fujiya had free rental sandals to easily enjoy the river onsen. The staff were welcoming and supportive. May have been our favorite accommodations of the trip.

A little slice of heaven
When I opened the door to my room I thought there must have been a mistake. It was so large and beautiful with a view out to the river and a wall of green trees. You could hear families having a wonderful afternoon wading in the river. The meals were plentiful and delicious. Although they only offer coffee on the second morning of your stay I was able to get a very good hot coffee out of the vending machine.

Great Views, Excellent Food, Good Rooms
I was concerned that there might be issues with this hotel after reading some negative reviews but it seems like they've addressed them mostly. Rooms: I found the room very clean, large and well kept (no signs of mold etc) barring some age-related wear and light water staining on one of the paper shutters. I was in a traditional Japanese style room though, the messiness might be limited to Western style rooms? Ballast in the florescent lighting was on the way out and took a couple seconds to start, so perhaps that could be improved with newer lights. Baths: Facilities were also very clean, one of the best onsen I went to on the trail, mostly just for the ambience and design. It's an outdoor bath with a natural rock pastiche, so you can enjoy the sound of the river outside while you're relaxing. Dinner/Breakfast: Dinner and breakfast were both excellent, they were served in the main dining hall and traditional multi-course Japanese meals which were delicious and beautiful to look at. Service by the staff was also very attentive Staff: Very polite and helpful, they were almost a bit too much in terms of politeness. I think some of the reviews about rude staff may have been taken into consideration. Location: The hotspring river right outside the hotel was very picturesque and if you were so incline you could dig out a small divot and bath in the river itself (there are hotspots along the riverbed but the water itself is cooler everywhere else) Gift shop was quite cute as well Some minor things to note, the entire hotel was obviously an older one, so there were signs of aging like wear in the carpet and some fixtures in general. Some of the lights needed dusting as they had collected quite a large number of bugs (although, this is a rural area so huge numbers of bugs were everywhere outside). Also, the hotel was a bit empty, I believe I saw 4 other guests, and non-used wings had their lights turned off so the ambience was kind of creepy at night? And I think cost was higher than what would be ideal for what was provided (also drinks in the machine were like 200 yen, compared to normal 120-140)

Hotel infrastructure is traditional and clean but outdated, altough this has its charm. Good meals and friendly staff.

Lovely accommodation
Fujiya Ryokan was a great place to stay. We particularly enjoyed having the river just in front. The meals were generous and very good. It was also nice to be able to experience the 3 different Onsen.
