Unfortunately we didn’t really get the same feeling as we did at other ryokan accommodations. The food boxes we received for dinner and breakfast were of very poor value.

Very comfortable Scandi guest room
We stayed at Kumano Gallery guest house which is a modern Scandi self contained addition to the accommodation and my brother and his wife stayed at Kominka guest house which is the original house on the same property. It is a fifteen minute drive from the Takahara rest stop where it seems everybody gets picked up from. We thought this might be a problem but the drive through the mountain road was beautiful. The accommodation is on a quiet road opposite a river. Very beautiful. Both were very comfortable rooms. Meals were excellent as was the bento box to take on our hike the next day. There was a modern dining room where we could have our meals together. Our hostess spoke a good amount of English and was very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Simple stay, great food
Food: this was the first and best dinner and packed lunch on the Kumano Kodo for me (besides ryokans, which are in a category of their own). I spoke to a few travelers the next day about their packed lunches from a different stays, and they seemed less impressed. I loved my meals! Location: the stay is a little outside of town. The host kindly picked me up and drove me (which was explained in the itinerary Kumano Travel sent me). You are less likely to run into travelers, and you're well outside of Takahara, which is a tiny village. This is even more remote. One thing I did not expect: I dined alone in my room! This is perfectly fine, and I have no complaints. This is information I did not have and did not know what to expect. For other accommodations, there are more like cafeterias or common dining areas. I recommend this to a solo traveler or couple looking for a quiet first night.

Lovely and cosy stay
What a lovely stay ! The accommodation is well designed and stocked with everything you might need. It really feels like an art gallery ! The pick-up from the Takahara rest area was quick and smooth. The host Aki is very kind and the food was delicious.

Perfect
The room was extremely comfortable and the food… the food was amazing! Our host was also extremely kind and even came to check on us after the earthquake. Probably one of the best stays of the trip.

Stay here!
I thought a bento dinner might be less than desirable after a day on the trail and I was very wrong! Absolutely beautiful and delicious. Aki took great care of us and the place is so thoughtfully put together!
